SAUL CASTRO
Saúl Castro is a distinguished visual artist from Oaxaca, Mexico, whose work moves between the poetic worlds of surrealism, symbolism, and abstraction. He studied at the School of Fine Arts in Oaxaca, where he developed a visual language deeply connected to the cultural and emotional landscapes of his native region. Over the years, Castro has become recognized for his mastery of the encaustic technique, working with layers of wax, pigment, texture, and fire to create surfaces that feel ancient, intimate, and alive.
His paintings are rich with symbolism and emotional narrative. Recurring elements such as crabs, roosters, pomegranates, women, moons, and organic forms appear throughout his work as metaphors for fertility, transformation, memory, sensuality, protection, and the fragile balance between strength and vulnerability. The crab, one of his most iconic symbols, evokes both resilience and emotional shelter, while the rooster often represents vitality, awakening, masculinity, and the rituals of daily life in Oaxaca. The pomegranate emerges as a symbol of abundance, mystery, and the hidden complexity of human emotion.
