Rolando Rojas was born in Juchitan, in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, Oaxaca, Mexico. He studied Architecture, Restoration, and Fine Arts at the Universidad Autónoma Benito Juárez. Also, he trained at the renowned Taller Rufino Tamayo, where he strengthened his artistic skills and deepened his connection to Oaxacan traditions. He developed his talent through constant practice and a profound connection to Oaxaca's cultural and visual traditions.
His work is deeply tied to his cultural history and the legacy of Oaxacan visual arts Universal themes such as fertility, sensuality, music, and recurring motifs like the cosmos, the sun, and the moon are hallmarks of his art.
Like many of his contemporaries in Oaxaca, Rolando Rojas grew up in a culture where storytelling was essential to raising every child. His work is influenced by the stories his grandmother and great-grandmother told, which included narratives about historical events and indigenous myths about human behavior and the origin of the world.
His paintings evoke a distinct world, a distant time, and a unique dimension inhabited by extraordinary creatures shaped by the perspective of a childhood spent in a small rural town. His work also has a serene and playful energy, filled with multiple layers of meaning and rich, sensual symbolism waiting to be discovered.
Today, Rolando Rojas is an internationally acclaimed artist with expertise in various techniques and materials, such as marble dust, oil, and inks, excelling in all engraving techniques. His unique approach and compositional power allow his work to transcend national boundaries and connect with a universal language.
Rolando Rojas has become a master of this tradition, achieving international recognition through more than 200 exhibitions in cities such as Argentina, Canada, China, Costa Rica, Cuba, Denmark, France, Japan, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, Spain, the United States, and Uruguay.
His art bridges the ancestral and the contemporary, a testament to his profound commitment to Oaxacan culture.
