Welcome to S&ERFC’s match-day programme, now produced in digital format.

The warmest of welcomes from S&ERFC to all those participating in or attending this match in the Regional 2 South East league.

The 2025-26 season brings a range of fixtures, several with old friends and rivals, others with new clubs whom we have not met at 1st XV level before. But wherever they hail from, and whoever they are, our opponents and all visitors will always be warmly greeted at Rugby Lane.

Last season was particularly enjoyable with plenty of very closely-contested matches for the men’s 1st XV. Ultimately, they finished in a creditable fourth place, with the women’s 1st XV finishing eighth in Championship South 1. At our level, league rugby is highly competitive, and is bound to become more so as the season progresses.

The Minis and Juniors section, both male and female, continue to thrive. The legacy of Jamie Paxton, whose vision and foresight led to the founding of this section, is there to be marvelled at every Sunday, and the vibrancy and enthusiasm these young players (and their parents!) generate gives the Club a real ‘buzz’.

We are also delighted to welcome back our friends from the visually impaired sector, whose skill, dedication, and evident enjoyment prove (if proof were needed) that rugby really is a game for all.

Sutton through the Ages

The Sutton & Epsom club – just Sutton until the reorganisation of London in 1971, is one of the oldest clubs in England. The original club was formed in 1871, the year of the RFU’s foundation, and although Sutton’s forefathers disbanded a few years later, many of those pioneers joined forces with rugby enthusiasts in the Sutton Bicycle Club to bring rugby back to Sutton. And that is the club we know today. It was the autumn of 1880 and the club first took the field under the banner of Sutton Bicycle Club (Football Section) – hence the iconic and much-loved symbol of the pennyfarthing.

And Sutton Football Club, as it soon became known, were quick to stamp their name on the football map, not only in the local area, but throughout the metropolis. Under the initial leadership of Yorkshireman Herbert Hooper, and later boosted by the arrival of international forwards Alfred Allport and George Fraser (the former Sutton born and bred) and a glittering array of backs, Sutton became a major force, capable of meeting and beating the likes of Saracens, Wasps and London Welsh, and even crossing the English Channel to beat the French Champions Stade Français in Paris. Thousands would flock to Grove Road, where a Sutton defeat was something of a rarity. Especially prized was the Surrey Challenge Cup, in which Sutton enjoyed a four-year stretch without defeat and once conceded not a single point in their triumphant cup run. One triumph coincided with the Victorian Era Exhibition at Earls Court in 1901, and there on a plinth in the Great Hall was the Surrey Cup itself, with Sutton’s name engraved upon it, alongside the Calcutta Cup recently won by England.

The Great War brought an end to Sutton’s dominance on the field – but not the growth of the club itself. The present Cuddington Court clubhouse was purchased in 1937 and the club resolutely stayed afloat during the war years, taking on the All Black and Wallaby inspired Royal Australian and New Zealand Services XV stationed in England. The president of the RFU opened the War Memorial stand in 1961 and within 30 years additional pitches had been purchased at Priest Hill, just half a mile away, reflecting the growth in playing numbers.

By 1987 leagues were upon us and it was a proud boast that Sutton, who had been placed in level five London One, retained their place in the top regional division for fully 18 years. There was also another period of dominance in the revived Surrey Cup, with seven cup triumphs in eleven appearances in the final. By 2019 Sutton had advanced to the National League Division Two. However, the pendulum has swung in the opposite direction and the club are now plying their trade in Regional 2 South East this season.

Such is the vibrant state of Sutton rugby today that it can now claim the distinction of being one of the biggest clubs in the country, with over 2,000 playing and social members. It can put up to 25 sides in the field every weekend, with minis from U5 to U11, youth sides for boys and girls from U12 to U18, a flourishing Womens XV, competing in the Women’s Championship South 1, and five men’s sides, including the flagship 1st XV, whose achievements over the past few seasons have been among the finest in a history spanning 140 years.

We are reminded of those words of another Sutton scribe, who wrote: “We have in our hands a precious legacy… it isn’t ours to keep, but it is something to make the most of when it is our turn and cherish, sustain and strengthen for future generations.”

Focus on Canterbury

Following the despair of World War One, the 1920s bore witness to the burgeoning expansion of sporting and social life in Britain. Canterbury RFC was one of the hundreds of clubs that arose from the carnage. In the Summer of 1929 the Founding Fathers of the club met at the Fleur de Lys in Canterbury High Street to discuss the formation of a rugby club. On 12th October that year Canterbury RFC, captained by Dudley Hallwood, had their inaugural fixture at Jackey Baker’s Sports Ground in Ramsgate when they lost to Thanet.

By the end of the 1930s the club were not only fielding two XVs but often a midweek team. They had settled in at the New Dover Road Ground with their headquarters at the Royal Fountain Hotel in St Margaret’s Street, where there were changing rooms, baths and hospitality. In July 1937, the club got its own ground courtesy of president Stephen Williamson who bought the Merton Lane Ground and rented the eleven acres to the club. It was celebrated in October 1937, when C G Williamson’s Blackheath XV met Canterbury. The club had a pitch but Spartan facilities consisting of a small hut.

Despite rather more pressing engagements rugby continued for the club between 1939-45. In 1947 the Wacher brothers purchased the ground and leased it back to the club on favourable terms. The industrious secretary, Martin Osbourne, amongst others, was instrumental in the construction of a pavilion in 1954. Success off the pitch was mirrored on the pitch in the 1950s and 1960s. By 1975 the club coached by Terry Grayson won the Kent Cup under captain Barry Jackson.

Prior to the introduction of league rugby in 1987 Kent’s union was split into Metropolitan [34 clubs near London] and Rural [35 everywhere else], with historically Blackheath and Westcombe Park being the Kent big guns. The leagues were the start of a more democratic meritocracy. Canterbury began in London 3 South East with Beckenham, Horsham and Old Colfeians from our current league as well as the likes of Gillingham Anchorians. The club suffered relegation in that first season and the 1980s and 1990s saw a decline that nearly saw them descend to Kent 3. Happily, it has been a case of onwards and upwards in recent times. Despite suffering the indignity of winning London 2 South in 1999-2000 only to be told that an RFU reorganisation meant no promotion they would not be denied. The champagne went on ice for a couple of seasons before entering London One South and the start of a decade of success. Twice they won the Level 5 title as well as collecting a further 5 Kent County Cups.

4th May 2019 was a red-letter day for Canterbury RFC as they defeated Chester RFC 19-10 to win the promotion play-off to National Division 1 (Level 3). Tries from scrum half Dan Smart, a 60-metre interception by winger J J Murray and replacement flanker Sam Roberts secured the glory. In the league era Sutton & Epsom have crossed paths with the Kent club on six occasions before the current campaign. The first meeting was a thrilling 23-22 win at Rugby Lane in September 2003 for the Black & Whites under Sam Frost. Indeed Sutton won the first four meetings. Canterbury’s first successes coinciding with Sutton’s 2004-05 relegation from London One.

There was a twenty-year absence before our two clubs met again in league action. However, there is a large caveat to the November meeting as this was a fixture not against Canterbury 1st XV but the ‘Pilgrims’ who are the 2nd XV. The match only occurred because the RFU amended their regulations to permit 2nd XVs to rise to Level 6 this season with the Pilgrims having previously been thwarted by red tape. The Kent Club impressively overcame an early 21-0 deficit to win 30-26.

Why are we playing a league fixture after the end of the season?

We are currently living in a time when it is increasingly common to reflect that one never expected this scenario to arise with regard to the geopolitical situation. In the parochial World of lower league rugby, with the exception of covid, the regular fixtures are completed by the final weekend. Uniquely Sutton & Epsom are turning out for an extra Saturday. To add to the list of unlikely happenings in 2026 Kent endured a serious meningitis outbreak that postponed the original 21st March meeting.

There will be several people at Huel Tring RFC whose reaction to this turn of events will range from a resigned shrug of their shoulders to apoplectic rage. In September 2021 Tring, as they were known then, were due to visit Dorking in the first season after covid. For a club that plays at Cow Lane it was perhaps not surprising that they had an outbreak of hand, foot and mouth disease. Before the season had started the RFU had bombarded clubs with a mountain of covid protocols and the steps to be taken to postpone a fixture. No doubt, Tring thought that in the interests of public health, in times acutely aware of such issues, that if they declined to play the game would be postponed and played on the ‘Next Available Weekend’. However, the RFU viewed it rather differently and not only awarded Dorking the game but also docked Tring points. The only silver lining in this darkest of clouds was the fact that there was no relegation that season.

Unsurprisingly Tring decided to appeal this decision and enlisted the help of the Sutton Club President John Hardy who had a friend in the legal World who was prominent at Tring. Despite their best endeavours the RFU decision and sanction remained and Tring were left feeling rather aggrieved as their club statement testified:

“Many of you will be aware, we had to postpone a 1st team match because of hand, foot and mouth. Unfortunately, the RFU took a dim view and docked us 5 points, gave 5 points to Dorking and forced us to play our home match v Dorking away on December 18th. We lost an appeal after an Independent RFU panel sat. In flagrant disregard to you as members, Public Health England and to the health of families at Tring and Dorking, the punishment for doing the right thing was upheld. We will be pointing out the errors to the RFU in due course”

Despite this precedent Sutton were not awarded the match when Canterbury withdrew and the Pilgrims were not docked points. The RFU decided to pass the buck and left the decision in the capable hands of Marc Bertrand the League Secretary. His response was fair and logical. The game was postponed and a happy medium was found for the date of the game. Easter Saturday was the ‘Next Available Weekend’ but the nature of the play-off timetable meant that Saturday 18th April was free for clubs not affected by the promotion aspect. As neither Sutton & Epsom nor Canterbury could be promoted they were free to play after Round 22.

So it is a belated warm welcome to all of those who have journeyed to Rugby Lane from Canterbury. As the Pilgrims are not permitted to gain promotion to Level 5 they were very much hoping not to be playing any league rugby beyond 11th April but at least they have the consolation that this is not the relegation play-off.
