DAVE HENLEY SYTA President Vice President of Operations, Grand Classroom

A

As the holidays draw closer, your SYTA and SYF Boards along with staff have been busy working for you. We’ve formed committees that are up and running, presented travel and professional development opportunities, and continued to raise money and awareness for the SYTA Youth Foundation. The work never stops. A big thank you to everyone who volunteered to serve. It’s your dedication and efforts that make this organization special. In this issue, our destination features take us to California, Illinois, and Puerto Rico, three very different places with their own opportunities for students to explore history, culture, science, the arts, and more. We also talk to educator Jannel McCallum, who heads her school’s International Club and has worked to bring the Seal of Biliteracy to the Wausau School District in Wisconsin. This year, that passion for international education is taking 56 students and chaperones to Spain, France, and Italy. You’ll also find a chat with an educator about an idea that can sometimes be overlooked: bringing travel back to the classroom, when students can’t always afford to travel around the world. And with technology playing such an increasingly important role in education, we look at ways educators can make the most of those tools without losing the value of real-world experiences. Creating meaningful travel experiences also means making sure every student has the opportunity to participate, so we take a look at accessibility in student travel, with practical considerations for accommodating physical and mental barriers. As always, we’re pleased to share another student perspective through a finalist from this year’s The World Is A Classroom essay contest. Their words provide a firsthand reminder of why these experiences matter. Finally, our Educator’s Buyers Guide brings together SYTA member companies that can help educators plan and navigate the many details that go into safe and successful student travel. Whether you’re organizing your first trip or your fiftieth, having knowledgeable partners makes all the difference. With the busy season for student and youth travel right around the corner, the magic of what we do can sometimes get pushed into the background. But make no mistake, the work you do changes kids lives and it’s important not to forget it. Have a great holiday season!

SYTA AND BONARD RELEASE INTERNATIONAL STUDENT & YOUTH TRAVEL INSIGHT REPORT Research conducted by BONARD on behalf of SYTA is shedding light on the state of international student and youth travel. BONARD interviewed international student travel planners in the first quarter of this year, to hear their perspective on group travel and travel to the United States. The sector continues to evolve, building on trends that were already shaping the market prior to the pandemic. Recent findings show that, while demand has recovered, several of these trends have accelerated, and traditional patterns have not fully returned. Across regions, student travel remains strong and consistent. The market is stabilizing into a predictable, sustainable growth pattern following an initial surge from pent-up demand. Demand is now characterized by increased participation from specific segments, heightened selectivity among schools and families, and growing confidence in long-haul travel. SYTA conducted this research instead of the Business Barometer, which will now be produced every other year. The Business Barometer 2026 survey will be sent to members in December of this year. To view the study, visit syta.org/research.

THE LEADING SOURCE FOR EDUCATORS WHO PLAN STUDENT TRAVEL For young people, travel is an education in itself. It helps them build self-esteem, independence, tolerance and cultural understanding, while breaking down barriers to a child’s personal, educational and social development. Patterns and habits embraced when traveling at an early age are known to influence future decisions. The benefits of travel go beyond education. Increasingly, governments and businesses are recognizing the positive effects of youth travel as a powerful life experience that promotes economic development, job fulfillment and cultural understanding. PURPOSEFUL TECHNOLOGY IN THE CL ASSROOM

T

Technology is everywhere in education, from tablets and Google Docs to coding programs and AI. But bringing more technology into the classroom doesn’t necessarily mean every student needs a laptop, or that every lesson needs to become a digital experience. The most effective approach may be the simplest: Start with the purpose, then determine whether technology is the right tool to accomplish it. Technology can enhance instruction, increase participation, streamline organization and give students opportunities to develop skills they will use beyond the classroom. START SMALL Technology integration doesn’t have to mean completely redesigning a lesson. Simple tools can make familiar classroom activities more engaging or efficient. A PowerPoint presentation, for example, can introduce a new concept while incorporating graphics, bullet points and embedded videos. Online assignments through platforms such as Blackboard, Brightspace or Moodle make homework accessible and can help students stay organized. For quick assessments, teachers can use Google Forms for exit tickets and auto-graded quizzes. Kahoot! and Quizizz can turn review into an interactive activity, while Google Classroom can help streamline assignments, organization and feedback. These tools can also open the door for participation from students who might otherwise stay quiet. GIVE MORE STUDENTS A VOICE Technology can be particularly useful when participation would otherwise depend on who is willing to raise a hand or speak the loudest. Platforms such as Padlet allow students to contribute responses digitally, creating space for quieter students and giving everyone an opportunity to participate. Students can respond through text, images, comments and other forms of interaction, creating multiple avenues for sharing ideas.

The goal isn’t simply to increase the amount of participation, but to broaden whose voices are being heard. Collaborative technology can also shift students from simply receiving information to actively working through ideas together. Tools such as Fig Jam can be used for brainstorming, concept mapping and collaborative planning. A strategy such as “debate the ratings,” for example, can have students analyze and evaluate content while developing their understanding of claims, evidence and reasoning. BUILDING COMMUNIT Y Technology can also support the relationships that make a classroom work. Online grading systems such as PowerSchool can help teachers, students, parents and administrators communicate about grades, attendance and areas for improvement. Parent communication tools such as Listserv can keep families informed through announcements, newsletters and other updates. Another example is ClassBank, a digital classroom economy designed to encourage positive behavior and shared ownership. Students earn digital currency that can be exchanged for classroom privileges, creating a system intended not only to motivate students but also to encourage them to help one another. REAL-WORLD SKILLS Another reason to approach technology thoughtfully: Students are preparing for a world where digital tools are part of their careers and everyday lives. Ultimately, purposeful technology integration comes down to making intentional choices. The right tool can remove barriers, amplify student voices, encourage collaboration and make classroom management more efficient. The wrong tool can simply add another screen to the day. And remember: In an age when those screens are everywhere, sometimes the novelty is putting them away.

PROFILE

JANNEL McCALLUM:

INSPIRING STUDENTS TO BE MULTILINGUAL CITIZENS OF THE WORLD

M

Many of the “Traveling Teacher of the Year” winners and finalists we’ve talked with over the years didn’t know they wanted to be teachers when they started on their career paths. But, Jannel McCallum was certain from a very young age. As a kid, she played school with her friends—and was always head of the classroom. She got old textbooks from her instructors, made up worksheets, even created her own makeshift overhead projector. When the time came to put dreams into reality, she was more than ready! Initially, when Jannel started college, she thought she wanted to pursue elementary education, but after taking her first German class, she switched her major to German secondary education. Needing to add a minor, she chose Spanish, which proved useful when, after 12 years of teaching German, she was asked to take on teaching Spanish as well. Being a child of a military parent, Jannel moved a lot when she was growing up. Living in different places and countries fueled her interest in languages and, we’re guessing, also contributed to her adventurous spirit. Today, Jannel teaches Spanish at Wausau East High School in Wisconsin and she’s also the global language department chair and coadvisor of the International Club. She’s in her 28th year of teaching, and has taught in the same district the whole time.

6

It wasn’t until Jannel was teaching Spanish full time that she started traveling with her students, first co-leading a trip, then alternating years with another teacher, and now traveling with students every year. She says she always takes her students to a Spanish-speaking country, for more reasons than just practicing language skills. “I want kids to see that people don’t live like we live in the United States,” she says. “The way that we live here is special, if you think about the population of the planet. I like kids to open their eyes to what the rest of the world is like, which I think is really important because it’s easy to become ‘Americentric’. Of course, we’re going to places where they can use the language that they’re learning, but we want them to experience the countries and cultures that they learn about in the classroom as well, and see that their lifestyle is just one of many ways to be human.” Overseas travel doesn’t just happen though; it costs money. Jannel credits a massive fundraiser that she co-leads at Lambeau Field—home of the Green Bay Packers—for making much of it possible. It involves coordination with the service that runs the concession stands, and takes 60-plus volunteers at every game. Last year they raised an astounding $185,000!

Jannel notes that this endeavor goes beyond financial outcomes. “It’s really special to me because I’m working with the kids and the families before the trip, and they’re putting their own effort and money into it,” she says. “We’ve built deeper relationships, and, with all the complexities of running concessions, developed problem-solving skills that benefit everyone in travel and in life.” Traveling with a large group of students and chaperones also requires organization skills. Success in arranging student travel, Jannel says, depends on being prepared for delays, lost luggage, illnesses, dietary restrictions, and other potential setbacks or challenges. “If you’re not an organized person, for sure you need to team up with someone who is. It’s a lot of responsibility to take kids out of the country, or even to another city, so you have to get your ducks in a row. And, lean into experienced mentors; people who have done this before—especially if it’s your first trip.” Resilience is also key, because, inevitably, something unexpected will arise that no amount of planning can control. That’s where Jannel leans on ACIS Educational Tours. She’s been working with them for years, as did her previous colleagues. And, while they cost a little more, she says, “You get what you pay for. With my ACIS tour managers, they are always teaching us. We’re always learning.”

I want kids to see that people don’t live like we live in the United States. THE WAY THAT WE LIVE HERE IS SPECIAL, IF YOU THINK ABOUT THE POPULATION OF THE PLANET. I like kids to open their eyes to what the rest of the world is like, which I think is really important because it’s easy to become ‘Americentric’.

For those new to student travel planning, ACIS provides training tours to get acclimated to the experience, and for seasoned group leaders they offer professional development opportunities through their global conferences. “I just attended a global conference this summer, and I learned so much about being a group leader from other group leaders,” Jannel says. “Everyone was so f lexible and so easygoing. This is how we have to be.” Additional advice Jannel offers to other educators, especially foreign language teachers, is to visit a different country every time, if possible. “There are so many places where the languages they’re learning are spoken,” she says. “It’s good for kids to be exposed to a diversity of cultures.” One of the greatest joys Jannel gets from traveling with her students is being with them as they’re experiencing new things. “Whether it’s as thrilling as going ziplining or watching them solve a problem using the language they’re learning, there is just so much reward,” she says. “I hope what we share will spark their curiosity and give them the confidence to one day use their Spanish to navigate their own global adventures.”

MAKING STUDENT TRAVEL MORE ACCESSIBLE

A

Accessible student travel begins long before a group boards a bus. For teachers and trip planners, creating an inclusive experience means thinking beyond ramps and elevators to consider the wide range of physical, sensory and cognitive disabilities students may have—including disabilities that aren’t immediately visible. After all, disability is often described as the only minority group a person can join at any time. A student who needs additional accommodations today may not have needed them on a previous trip, while another student may have a disability that isn’t apparent to others at all. That makes communication one of the most important tools in accessible travel.

8

T E AC H & T R AV E L M AG A Z I N E | N OV E M B E R 2 0 2 6

START WITH THE STUDENT Parents and guardians can be invaluable resources when planning a trip for a student with a disability. Talk with them early about their child’s needs, concerns, routines and recommendations, and continue communicating with them throughout the planning process and trip. Don’t assume that a particular accommodation will work simply because it worked for another student. The more specific the information, the better equipped trip planners will be to create an experience that works for everyone. That same principle applies to interactions during the trip. Always address a student with a disability directly rather than speaking to a companion or aide on their behalf. Include them in conversations and activities, and don’t change your tone or volume when speaking with them. If someone appears to need assistance, ask before stepping in. Unsolicited help can create an uncomfortable or undignified situation. And while enthusiasm and encouragement are welcome, avoid calling someone “brave” or “inspirational” simply because they live with a disability. Treating students with dignity means recognizing them as students first, not defining them by their disability. ASK SPECIFIC QUESTIONS When arranging transportation, lodging, attractions and activities, don’t rely on a supplier’s general claim that something is “accessible.” Ask exactly what that means. For transportation, that might mean confirming that a motorcoach has a wheelchair lift or that a shuttle can accommodate mobility devices. At hotels, ask detailed questions about accessible entrances, bathroom configurations, bed heights, room layouts, electronic doors and other relevant features.

DON’T ASSUME THAT A PARTICULAR ACCOMMODATION WILL WORK SIMPLY BECAUSE IT WORKED FOR ANOTHER STUDENT. The more specific the information, the better equipped trip planners will be to create an experience that works for everyone. This is particularly important with hotel rooms. Not every ADAcompliant room is configured the same way, and the room that works for one disability may not work for another. Confirm the student’s specific needs with the hotel before booking, then follow up again closer to arrival. A front-desk employee may not have complete information about every accessible room, so don’t be afraid to ask for someone who can verify the details. The same approach applies to attractions. Ask about accessible paths and entrances, seating, closed captioning, sensory aids, quiet spaces and any other accommodations that could affect participation. PLAN FOR MORE THAN MOBILIT Y Accessibility isn’t limited to wheelchair access. A student may need a quiet space to take a break from a crowded environment, sensory aids to make an attraction more manageable, additional time to move between activities, or f lexibility around an itinerary. Tour leaders can help by using accessible paths and entrances for the entire group rather than separating students unnecessarily. Universal design—creating experiences that work for as many people as possible from the beginning— can make these accommodations feel less like exceptions and more like part of the trip.

For example, consider whether the itinerary offers different activity levels. In some situations, splitting a large group into two groups with different paces or activity options can give students more f lexibility without singling anyone out. The goal is to balance the experience so every student has meaningful opportunities to participate. HAVE A BACKUP PLAN Even the most carefully researched accommodations can encounter problems. Build f lexibility into the itinerary and establish backup options before the trip begins. Create clear procedures for handling accommodations, both planned and last-minute, and make sure trip leaders, chaperones and relevant suppliers understand them. If an accessible entrance is unexpectedly closed, a bus lift doesn’t work or an activity proves unsuitable, leaders should already know whom to contact and what alternatives are available. Local accessibility organizations and community partners can also be valuable sources of information. They may know about recent changes, accessible attractions and practical considerations that aren’t obvious from a destination’s website. Ultimately, accessible travel is about far more than meeting regulations. It is about creating experiences in which every student feels welcomed, prepared and empowered to participate.

DINOSAURS, DOLPHINS, & DEEP SPACE in Illinois I

Illinois offers student groups an unusual amount of variety in a relatively compact trip. A few days can take students from the depths of the ocean to the outer reaches of space, from works of art spanning centuries to the history of Abraham Lincoln, with plenty of opportunities for science, nature, architecture and good oldfashioned fun along the way. For groups headed to the state, Chicago, Lake County and Springfield are three options that each offer a different kind of educational experience—and together, they can create a wellrounded itinerary for students of nearly any age.

CHICAGO Chicago is an easy place to build an itinerary around students’ interests, thanks to its concentration of major museums and attractions. Start at the Field Museum, where students can explore natural history through exhibits spanning dinosaurs, ancient cultures, animals and the natural world. Its field-trip experiences can be tailored to different grade levels and curricula, with topics ranging from evolution, fossils and dinosaurs to ancient cultures and archaeology. Teachers can also use the museum’s Field Trip Guides to give students a specific focus while exploring the exhibits. Activities include examining an artifact through observation and inference or investigating an exhibition using a claim-evidencereasoning framework. Nearby, the Adler Planetarium takes the lesson beyond Earth. Its school field trips combine hands-on activities, exhibitions and immersive dome shows, putting students in the roles of scientists, engineers and problem-solvers as they explore the universe. Its Pre-K–12 field trips include hands-on activities, educator-guided experiences, immersive dome shows and exhibitions covering 60,000 square feet. Students are encouraged to approach the experience as scientists, engineers, astronauts and problem-solvers rather than simply museum visitors. Photos © Adler Planetarium, Field Museum

For students interested in science and technology, the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry offers another deep dive, with interactive exhibits designed to make complex scientific concepts tangible. Meanwhile, the Shedd Aquarium brings marine science to life through aquatic habitats and animal experiences, giving students the opportunity to explore the connections between science, technology and the natural world. Its school programs are designed around science learning and can explore subjects including animal behavior, habitats, adaptations, ecosystems, anatomy and water chemistry. Students can take on activities such as habitat design or even squid dissection, giving them opportunities to practice observation, critical thinking, engineering and science-literacy skills. The arts are equally well represented. The Art Institute of Chicago houses an enormous collection spanning thousands of years and cultures, giving teachers plenty of options for connecting a visit to history, art or social studies. For a more contemporary perspective, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago focuses on modern and contemporary artists and the ideas behind their work. Then there are the attractions that put students directly into the Chicago experience.

At 360 CHICAGO, groups can take in the city from the 94th f loor of 875 N. Michigan Avenue, with sweeping views of Chicago and Lake Michigan. Flyover Chicago, located at Navy Pier, offers a completely different perspective: a multisensory simulated f light over the city that combines motion, visuals and other sensory effects. Navy Pier itself can easily fill an afternoon, with lakefront views, entertainment and attractions. Groups can also take to the water with City Cruises, turning Chicago’s famous skyline and waterfront into part of the lesson. And for students who are more interested in baseball than brushstrokes, there’s always the Chicago Cubs. A game at Wrigley Field offers a chance to experience one of the city’s most recognizable traditions while incorporating lessons in sports history, architecture, business and Chicago culture.

SPRINGFIELD For history-focused groups, Springfield brings Illinois’ past into sharp focus. The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum is an obvious centerpiece. Students can explore Lincoln’s life, presidency and legacy through museum exhibits, artifacts and immersive experiences. The museum also offers specific programming and planning resources for school groups, including extension activities that can add an educational component to the visit. Springfield’s educational offerings extend beyond Lincoln. At the K idzeum of Health and Science, younger students can explore health, science and the human body through hands-on, interactive experiences. The Illinois State Museum provides another broad look at the state, with exhibits covering Illinois’ natural and cultural history. Its Springfield location includes three f loors of exhibits and educational programming, and admission is currently free. Together, these attractions make Springfield an especially useful stop for groups studying American history, government, Illinois history or the Civil War era.

LAKE COUNTY Lake County offers a useful change of pace from downtown Chicago, particularly for groups looking to balance museums with outdoor and recreational experiences. At the Dunn Museum, students can explore the history and environment of Lake County through exhibits and educational programs. The museum offers field trips and programs covering both history and environmental education, with topics aligned to Illinois Learning Standards. The Volo Auto Museum takes students in a very different direction. Its collection of automobiles and pop-culture vehicles can provide an engaging way to explore transportation, engineering, design and American popular culture. For a quieter outdoor experience, the Chicago Botanic Garden provides a living classroom where students can study plants, ecosystems, landscape design and conservation. With extensive gardens and natural areas, it offers plenty of opportunities to get students outside and learning. And then there’s Six Flags Great America. The park offers student programs covering subjects including physics, science and engineering, turning roller coasters and other attractions into examples of forces, motion and design. The adjacent Hurricane Harbor Chicago adds a summer option for groups looking to cool off after a day of learning.

Get a behind-the-scenes peek into film and television production with the Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood. Tours run roughly three hours, and are a mix of guided and self guided. Starting with the Storytelling Showcase at the welcome center and continuing by tram to back-lot sets, soundstages, and production areas, guests get an inside look at big- and small-screen filmmaking from its inception to today. On your own, you can see famous sets, costumes, and props and explore sound and special effects, plus have a redcarpet moment and shop merch at the studio store. The Exploratorium, located in San Francisco, is a STEAM-packed museum with more than 650 exhibits that invite interaction, play, experimentation, and discovery. Visits are self directed, though there will be an Exploratorium facilitator to provide a brief orientation before your group is let loose. Get hands on with displays that cover topics ranging from physics, engineering, and biology to art, the environment, and human perception. The museum’s philosophy encourages students to manipulate objects, witness cause and effect, test ideas, and collaborate with classmates. Situated within the multi-use Hollywood Park district, Cosm Los Angeles is all about shared reality. The team at Cosm notes that while today’s youth are arguably the most connected generation in history, they rarely get the opportunity to be all in one place, fully present, to enjoy and react together to wondrous experiences. At Cosm, your group could be surrounded by the wizardly world of Harry Potter, in the middle of the action for a professional sports event, or amid the enchantment of a classic movie. Whatever the interest, whatever the age group, Cosm will spark mutual amazement. Catalina Tours, which typically departs from Long Beach, takes groups on both surf and turf with a Pacific Ocean boat ride that arrives at Catalina Island. Start with a nearly one-hour city excursion of the resort town of Avalon, blending scenic views with tales of the island’s past. Then, grab lunch and continue on to delve into the undersea gardens of Lovers Cove inside a semi-submersible watercraft. Along the way, you’ll see a variety of marine plant and animal life, such as giant kelp, sea lions, calico bass, orange Garibaldi (the state fish), octopus, and more. Next, enjoy a cultural extravaganza at Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa. They’re Orange County’s leading host of theater, dance, and music performances held throughout the year, across multiple indoor and outdoor stages. Whether you’re interested in a jazz concert, a ballet or symphony production, or a Broadway show or musical, Segerstrom is a performing arts hub. Student group perks include discounted tickets, advance access/priority seating, easy payment plans, and personalized service.

Disney Imagination Campus at Disneyland Resort in Anaheim offers a host of youth programs catering to a range of interests. Marching bands, choirs, and dance teams that qualify can engage in festival competitions, participate in parades, or showcase their talents on iconic Disney stages. For the educational and entertainment aspects, they offer workshops and classes covering Arts & Humanities, Science & Technology, and Leadership & Innovation that are tiered to different grade levels. The campus is committed to encouraging curiosity and creativity in the current generation and beyond. Still looking for more ideas? Visit California has a wealth of ideas to fill out your trip. For starters, there’s Monterey Bay Aquarium, set on the edge of the Pacific Ocean. Housing 35,000-plus creatures representing more than 550 marine species, it’s one of the richest marine ecosystems on Earth. Marvel at a towering kelp forest, watch rescued sea otters play, or gaze into the blue waters of the million-gallon Open Sea tank. Ageappropriate educational programs and hands-on labs blend conservation, science, and up-close encounters. Further to consider is Chumash Museum and Cultural Center, a 3.5-acre park on tribal land in Santa Barbara County’s Santa Ynez Valley. Get engrossed in thousands of years of indigenous history through ancient objects, ceremonial regalia, paintings and art, exhibit spaces, and native plants. Of special interest is the Welcome Center and the Maria Solares Discovery Center, both fashioned after a traditional ‘ap—a dome-shaped Chumash dwelling. For more on California’s past, take your group to the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento. It’s considered one of the best railroad museums in the country, with 21 locomotives and railroad cars restored down to the smallest detail, with authentic design, décor, and period pieces. In addition to rail car walkthroughs, exhibits, and workshops, there’s the option of taking a six-mile, roundtrip train excursion along the Sacramento River to experience bygone train travel and learn about railroad history and the American West. Also not to be missed is LEGOLAND® in Carlsbad near San Diego, which combines the excitement of a theme park with the learning of a classroom. There are coasters, immersive rides, an aquarium, and a waterpark, plus Miniland USA, with famous U.S. cities and landmarks built entirely out of LEGOs. Of interest in the educational sphere is the LEGO ® Galaxy Robotic Lab, suitable for grades 5-8. On a final note, additional points of interest include The Getty Center art and design museum in LA, the USS Midway Maritime Museum in San Diego, and MOXI, The Wolf Museum of Exploration + Innovation in Santa Barbara—a STEAM-focused imagination destination for all ages.

Puerto Rico:

THE ISLAND CLASSROOM P

Puerto Rico packs an impressive amount of variety into a relatively small island. Students can walk through centuries of history in Old San Juan in the morning, hike through a tropical rainforest in the afternoon and watch the water glow beneath their paddles after dark. Along the way, explore Puerto Rican art, music, food, environmental science and the island’s Taíno, Spanish and African cultural inf luences. For student groups, the classroom can stretch from historic forts to mountain trails to a neighborhood food market.

START WITH HISTORY IN SAN JUAN Old San Juan is an easy place to build a history-focused itinerary, with colorful colonial architecture, plazas, churches, museums and two massive fortifications overlooking the Atlantic. At Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo San Cristóbal, students can examine the military engineering and colonial history of a city that was a strategic port for the Spanish Empire. The National Park Service offers educational visits for student groups, including ranger-led programs and selfguided options. Topics can be tailored to different grades and subjects, with programs covering everything from the history of Puerto Rico to the tunnels at San Cristóbal. Groups should plan ahead: reservations are required for student visits to the forts, and ranger-guided programs have limited capacity. Old San Juan also provides plenty of opportunities to discuss how Puerto Rico’s history has been shaped by multiple cultures. Students can visit the Museo de las Américas, explore historic streets and plazas, and consider the connections between Spanish colonialism, African heritage and Puerto Rico’s Indigenous Taíno roots.

TAKE THE CLASSROOM OUTSIDE For environmental science and biology students, El Yunque National Forest offers a dramatic change of scenery. The only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System, El Yunque gives students an opportunity to see tropical ecosystems firsthand, with hiking trails, streams, waterfalls and an abundance of plant and animal life. Student groups can incorporate birdwatching, ecology lessons and discussions about conservation into their visit. The island’s marine environments provide another avenue for experiential learning. In places such as La Parguera, students can learn about mangrove ecosystems and the species that depend on them. And after dark, a bioluminescent-bay excursion turns a lesson in marine biology into something considerably more memorable. Puerto Rico is home to three of the world’s rare bioluminescentbay ecosystems, where microscopic dinoflagellates create a glowing effect when the water is disturbed. EXPERIENCE CULTURE Puerto Rican culture is particularly well suited to handson learning. Rather than simply observing traditions, students can participate in cooking classes, salsa lessons, folkloric dance workshops and other cultural experiences. Bomba and plena, for example, offer opportunities to explore the island’s musical traditions and African inf luences through rhythm, movement and storytelling. Food can become part of the curriculum, too. Students can sample dishes such as mofongo, tostones and alcapurrias while learning how Indigenous, African, Spanish and other influences have shaped Puerto Rican cuisine. A visit to a local market can even become a scavenger hunt, with students identifying unfamiliar ingredients and learning about the plants and foods grown on the island. Groups interested in language immersion can also take advantage of the island’s bilingual environment. Interacting with local residents—and, when possible, students from Puerto Rican schools—can give travelers a more personal perspective on daily life, education and culture on the island.

EXPLORE BEYOND SAN JUAN A student trip does not have to stop in the capital. In southern Puerto Rico, Ponce offers another collection of historical and cultural attractions. Students can explore Plaza Las Delicias and the distinctive Parque de Bombas, a former fire station that now operates as a museum, before visiting museums and historic buildings throughout the city. The Museo de Arte de Ponce offers another academic angle, with a collection spanning Puerto Rican, American, African and European art. Meanwhile, the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico—while currently undergoing renovations— offers interactive tours, workshops and educational programming designed specifically for students and teachers. School groups can arrange tours focused on particular themes or subjects, followed by creative workshops that allow students to explore those ideas themselves. Students can also travel farther into the island’s cultural history at the Caguana Indigenous Ceremonial Park, one of the Caribbean’s important Taíno archaeological sites. The site provides an opportunity to examine Puerto Rico’s history from a perspective that predates European colonization. BUILD AROUND DISCOVERY One of Puerto Rico’s advantages for student travel is the ability to combine very different experiences without spending entire days in transit. The island is roughly 100 miles long, and its geography makes it possible to move from rainforest to coast to mountain communities within a relatively compact itinerary. A trip might begin with colonial history in San Juan, move into rainforest ecology at El Yunque, continue with cultural experiences and local food, and finish with a bioluminescentbay excursion. Another itinerary could focus on the arts and humanities, combining Old San Juan, museums, Ponce, traditional music and dance, and a visit to Caguana. The key is to build the trip around participation rather than sightseeing alone. Puerto Rico gives students plenty to look at, but its greatest educational opportunities come when they are encouraged to ask questions, try something unfamiliar, meet local people and experience the island on more than one level.

TR AVELING WITH INTENTION

O

Often, travel involves rushing through a checklist of touristy sites and activities so one can say, “Been there, saw that, done that, and check it off of my bucket list.” However, today’s travelers are being more purposeful in their exploration of the world and seek intentional travel experiences. What is intentional travel? Kim Hyde, a travel agent in Kentucky, defines it as, “Travelers who want experiences built around their interests and not just traditional sightseeing. They don’t want to look at a destination through a bus window, but they want to be changed by their experiences. Travelers want connection, hands-on experiences, and opportunities to be immersed in a destination.”

20

Another way to look at intentional travel is to identify an itinerary that has a clear purpose and mindful choices. There are three key aspects of organizing intentional travel. First, educators should define their why before determining a destination. What is the purpose of visiting this destination? Is it to learn, relax, immerse the group in the arts, grow, adventure, or something else? Next, the journey should embrace slow travel—staying in a region longer to learn its daily rhythm and avoid burnout. This provides opportunities to build real relationships with people and places. Finally, set up opportunities for students to engage with locals. This could involve eating at family-owned

restaurants, learning local phrases, volunteering with a local group, organizing a homestay, supporting the local economy, and respecting the local traditions. By adhering to these three key aspects of intentional travel, you can help students gain a fresh, positive outlook and have more meaningful travel experiences. Ingrid, a nomad traveler, wrote an article, “Simple Rules for Intentional Travel,” on Intentionaltravelers.com. She listed seven basic rules to follow that provide deeper travel experiences. First, learn some of the language. Simple phrases like hello, goodbye, please, and thank you show locals you want to engage with them. Second, smile and greet people according to their local customs. These small

I made connections, had hands-on experiences, and truly immersed myself in my destinations. I CAME HOME WITH A DEEPER APPRECIATION FOR THE PEOPLE, THE CULTURE, AND CUSTOMS OF THESE COUNTRIES. gestures make a difference. Third, stay longer in a destination. A longer visit allows time to delve deeper and learn the culture and history of a place. Fourth, be respectful and show reverence to others. Fifth, spread the wealth by shopping local and supporting the local economy. Sixth, shift the focus from taking to giving. Seventh, befriend locals. The best way to explore a destination is to get to know the locals and discover hidden gems. In the summer of 2026, I traveled solo to Eastern Europe to explore the territory of the former Yugoslavia that split into six countries and one partially recognized state. I spent five weeks exploring Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Slovenia, and Kosovo. This time, I wanted to be more intentional in my travel to these destinations. I wanted to stay in each city three to five nights, where I could immerse myself in the culture. I planned to engage with locals to learn about unique sights, restaurants, tours, and museums-places locals visited. I would stay in hostels, where I could interact and learn from world travelers. My transportation would be local buses and trains. Finally, I did not want my days filled with activities from sunrise to sunset. I wanted free time to explore, engage, and let my free spirit and intentional travel focus take the lead. Prior to departing the United States, I booked a round-trip f light to Slovenia and hostels in each destination, but I did not confirm anything else. For

many people, an unplanned trip can be uncomfortable, but I wanted more purpose in my travels, and to wander mindfully, connect authentically, and be spontaneous. My five-week intentional travel to Eastern Europe was absolutely amazing, and provided me with numerous meaningful travel experiences that I have ref lected often since then. By adhering to slow travel, I had ample time to immerse myself in each destination. I didn’t feel rushed to visit the touristy sights. I had extra time to enjoy long dinners at outdoor cafes, spend time with fellow hostelers, visit unique museums, experience interesting activities, take walks in preserved medieval-walled cities and along beaches, and learn about the history and culture of these countries. When I arrived in a new destination, I spent time talking to locals to get

recommendations, and then made a plan for the next few days. When I was ready to travel to the next destination, I booked bus or train travel. The bus rides, some as long as 12 hours, gave me ample time to converse with fellow travelers, and learn about their lives, customs, and cultures, and enjoy scenery along the way. I made connections, had handson experiences, and truly immersed myself in my destinations. I came home with a deeper appreciation for the people, the culture, and customs of these countries. How do you want your students to feel, learn, and grow on your trip? How do you want them to experience a place, rather than only focusing on where you go or what you see? Be intentional as you plan your student travel. It will make a difference in your and your students’ lives.

EXPERIENCES BY JOSH VE AL

BRINGING TR AVEL BACK TO THE CL ASSROOM

M

Mirta Valdés-Bradner teaches in a rural area, where over 60% of the students are free and reduced lunch. This means limited access to group travel, which has led Valdés-Bradner to bring travel back into her classroom. As a teacher of world languages at North Caroline High School in River Road, Maryland, she is also a dedicated support of AP programs and one of only 23 State Advocate Leads in the country. She was a finalist for 2026 Traveling Teacher of the Year, nominated because: “As a global educator, Sra. Valdés-Bradner intentionally incorporates virtual exchanges and guest speakers to humanize global connections and give students opportunities to engage in meaningful communication in the target language. By simulating travel experiences through projects, cultural comparisons, and inquiry-based learning, this helps students who may never have the opportunity to travel see themselves as global citizens.” We asked Mirta Valdés-Bradner a bit more about her approach.

YOU’RE A FUND FOR TEACHERS FELLOW IN PANAMA AND AN NEA GLOBAL LEARNING FELLOWSHIP PARTICIPANT IN COSTA RICA. TELL US ABOUT THOSE. Both fellowships have been transformative experiences for me as an educator. As an NEA Global Learning Fellow in 2024, I traveled to Costa Rica to explore global education, sustainability, and culture. In 2025, as a Fund for Teachers Fellow, I traveled to Panama to deepen my understanding of its culture, history, and global connections. I brought both experiences back to my Spanish classroom through authentic stories, projects, and cultural connections, helping my students see how language can open doors to the world. HOW DO YOU BRING TRAVEL BACK TO THE CLASSROOM? I intentionally bring travel experiences back into my classroom through handson, meaningful projects that make learning tangible. After studying Costa Rica, students create traditional oxcarts, and through our work on Panama, they design molas that ref lect cultural identity and storytelling. We also connect global learning

to real world impact, such as growing lettuce in our tower garden to explore sustainability and solutions to hunger. Beyond projects, I focus on building confidence through everyday, reallife skills in the target language from ordering food, navigating transportation, and understanding cultural norms. Even when we are not traveling abroad, I recreate that sense of exploration in the classroom. My students use colorful “passports” to document their learning as we “travel” together, helping them see themselves as active participants in a global community. HOW DO YOU SEE STUDENTS REACTING TO THOSE EXPERIENCES? My students become more curious, engaged, and willing to participate when our lessons become authentic. Whether I bring in a guest speaker through Zoom, share an artifact from one of my travels, or tell stories from experiences I’ve had abroad, they begin to see Spanish as more than a subject—they see it as a connection to real people and the world beyond our classroom. Those moments often spark questions, conversations, and a genuine desire to learn more. Like I say: “The world is our classroom.”

ANY ADVICE YOU’D GIVE FELLOW TEACHERS? Don’t let finances keep you from bringing the world to your students. Start small—explore your own community, take short trips, invite virtual guests, and share authentic artifacts and experiences. And keep looking for grants and fellowships. Remember, you do not have to travel far to bring the world closer to your students.

STUDENTS SPEAK

CONNECTION BEGINS WITH EFFORT

M

My journey began in an airport at the age of four, not in a standard classroom. Seeing airplanes out the window, standing at attention, seemingly waiting for my permission to whisk everyone off to their destination, was exhilarating. As the daughter of a diplomat currently stationed in India, I’ve lived in seven different countries: Zambia, Nepal, Malawi, Sri Lanka, Brazil, India, and the United States. Having had more first days of school than most, I packed experiences, cultures, and identities along with my books. These moves taught me how to see the world, people, and myself. Every move presented its own challenges. At ten, I arrived in Brazil unable to speak Portuguese. I remember standing alone and watching other kids laugh at jokes I couldn’t understand. They weren’t excluding me, but the language barrier made me feel invisible. Eventually, I learned words like legal (cool), cara (dude), and beleza (okay). Those words opened the door to invaluable friendships and taught me that connection doesn’t begin with f luency; it begins when you start trying. But being seen wasn’t always comfortable because my pronunciation was very different from my friends’. In Malawi, I learned a different lesson. Since everyone looked like me, I thought fitting in would be easy. It wasn’t. My classmates called me names and couldn’t relate to my interests and how I spoke. Their comments

I saw how politics can disintegrate even the strongest systems. I also learned that EDUCATION, INFORMATION, AND PARTICIPATION CAN BOLSTER INSTITUTIONS AND RELATIONSHIPS ALIKE.

made me feel like an outsider. But I soon learned that Malawians are direct, brutally honest in ways I was unfamiliar with. That taught me that intent and impact don’t always align, and I should listen before reacting. Living in Nepal taught me about global responsibility. Pollution was not just something I read in a book; it was something I lived every day. People burned coal for warmth, and smoke turned the Kathmandu valley’s sky dark gray. I checked the air quality index before leaving home and wore a mask to school, long before COVID-19. It made climate change real and urgent to me. Back in Brazil, I witnessed protests that divided the country. I saw how politics can disintegrate even the strongest systems. I also learned that education, information, and participation can bolster institutions and relationships alike. These moves equipped me to identify the first-day-ofschool jitters in others; that uncertain look that I know very well. In ninth grade, I saw a girl sitting alone in French class, looking terrified, so I invited her to lunch and introduced her to my friends. We all became friends. Helping her feel less alone made me realize how much my experiences could help others. Now, after many hours in airports and on planes, I want to become a pilot because f lying connects people across countries, cultures, and languages. This year, I will attend an aviation high school to make my dream reality. Representation matters, and pilots who look like me are rare. I want to change that for others who need to see that it is possible. I’ve learned that no matter where people are from, they want safety, dignity, and belonging. The world is my classroom, teaching me resilience, kindness, and openness; lessons I will share along the way.
