The State of Travel and the Economy in 2025

It’s no secret the relationship between travel and the economy is a tight knit one, with ripple effects from each felt throughout various sectors in a number of ways, from jobs to revenue and more. Come along as we explore some key points examining how the economy in 2025 so far is impacting the travel industry as a whole.
CURRENT STANDINGS AND TRENDS
IResearch is finding that both international visitors and travel spending are on the decline this year, a trend which could be cause for concern if it continues. The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) forecasts a $12.5 billion loss in U.S. international visitor spending in 2025, dropping from $181 billion in 2024 to under $169 billion—a 22.5% decline from the pre-pandemic peak. Outbound travel, however, according to WTTC, is surging, with Americans traveling abroad in large numbers. Though that doesn’t solve the decreasing appeal of tourism to America around the world.
The U.S. Department of Commerce reports a widespread drop in inbound travel:
UK ARRIVALS are down nearly 15% year over year.
ARRIVALS
FROM
GERMANY
are down more than 28%
ARRIVALS FROM SOUTH KOREA are down almost 15%
Forbes also reported that land border crossings by Canadians into the U.S. dropped 33% in June 2025 compared to June 2024—a dramatic downturn from the United States’ number one source of international visitors last year. This decline is one the Washington Post estimates could cost the U.S. around $4.3 billion in tourism spending.
TD Economics shares that tourism contributes around 3% of the U.S. GDP and 4% of total employment. Though today, many businesses and corporations are responding to the current economic state by announcing workforce reductions.
MAIN DRIVERS
A major factor for the downturn, as reported by Business Insider, has been stricter visa controls, border enforcement, and immigration policy concerns under the Trump administration. Nightmare customs and immigration stories have caused fear in international visitors and even U.S. citizens, leading to many changing their plans, or worse, canceling them fully. Negative sentiment toward U.S. tariffs and trade policy is an additional factor greatly influencing international traveler behavior and decision making.
According to the Wall Street Journal , a weaker U.S. dollar is also playing a factor, reducing U.S. travelers’ overseas buying power—but at the same time, a still-strong dollar makes the U.S. less affordable for inbound tourists.
WHERE TO GO FROM HERE
As the year continues—with so much beyond our control—those in the industry must brace themselves for an increasingly unpredictable landscape. However, during this crucial window, there are several avenues within our control for forward movement:
» If your base includes international travelers, center your marketing on rebuilding lost trust and providing a sense of confidence in their travels.
» At the same time, prioritize the domestic market and encourage travel within the U.S.
» Make your voice heard, especially with those who lobby and advocate on behalf of the industry and its respective sectors to policymakers.
» Collaboration with stakeholders, industry partners, and policymakers—both domestically and internationally—remains vital. Seek out as many opportunities as you can to build and foster these relationships.
What remains abundantly clear is how vital the travel industry is as an overall economic driver, further emphasizing the value of investing in and building up the industry now more than ever.

WOMEN MAKE THE TRAVEL WORLD GO ‘ROUND

Meet the women innovating the industry.
From travel professionals to vendors working with international audiences, women are the backbone of the travel industry. They educate travelers on their culture, support one another as they grow their travel businesses, and go above and beyond to create enriching travel experiences.
When we empower women in travel, everyone’s travels are richer.
WOMEN SUPPORTING WOMEN
In Namibia, Pendouka Village is empowering and supporting women through traditional craftwork and skill sharing. For more than 30 years, they’ve driven economic growth for their community by providing a place where women can learn from each other, grow, and find their safe space.
Co-ops and nonprofits all around the world are formed by women, for women—and they love it when visitors stop by to learn about their mission. Pendouka Village is a must-visit to inspire every traveler.
WOMEN IN TOUR OPERATION
Collette, North America’s longest running tour operator, has a strong team of 580 tour managers—and 55% of them are women. Additionally, 66% of their tour designers and 25% of their buyers are women, creating an environment that values the travel expertise of women, whether it’s sales or destination insights.
WOMEN WHO HAVE ‘DOVE’ THE WAY
Girls in Japan start training as young as 12 years old to be the next in line to uphold a career path forged by women for nearly 3,000 years. These women defy expectations and gender roles as they dive into freezing water to harvest mollusks for their pearls.
Mikimoto Pearl Island is the perfect place to learn about this profession, and maybe even see the amazing ama pearl divers in action to show what can happen with passion and determination.
As travel continues to evolve, women are at the frontlines of innovation— sharing culture, support, and once-in-a-lifetime experiences for travelers all over the world.

The Magic & Majesty of Live Performances!
By Sarah Suydam
TThere’s nothing quite like the anticipation of a live performance, whether it be a musical, opera, play, dinner show, orchestra or otherwise. Luckily, groups who absolutely love the thrill of seeing the curtains rise and being entertained by world-class performers have plenty of options to choose from all around the country. Join us as we take a snapshot look at some of the incredible opportunities that await groups when it comes to enjoying a stellar live performance!
Celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2025, Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts in Orlando provides groups with varying venues in order to provide exactly the type of experience they seek. Whether it’s renowned venues such as the Walt Disney Theater, Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater, and the acclaimed Steinmetz Hall (recognized among Architectural Digest ’s 11 most beautiful theaters worldwide), or the more intimate Judson’s Live—the Center’s new live music room—and established venues such as the DeVos Family Room, Rooftop Terrace, and Seneff Arts Plaza.
An example of the Center’s show caliber is the upcoming grand finale of its 10th anniversary season: Grammy and Oscar-winning artist Jon Batiste— widely regarded as one of the most dynamic artists of his generation— and his electrifying Jon Batiste Plays America: The Big Money Tour, live in the Walt Disney Theater on Friday, October 10, 2025. The Center is also host to touring Broadway performances in partnership with the Florida Theatrical Association, welcoming productions including The Outsiders , & Juliet , Hell’s Kitchen , Kimberly Akimbo , and the Florida debut of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in early 2026.

Venture to Chanhassen, Minnesota and you’ll find Chanhassen Dinner Theatres (CDT), a destination providing groups with the perfect combination of live entertainment and a delicious meal from an extensive menu. The holidays are an especially ideal time to visit, as the attraction is decked out head to toe, from delightful holiday decor to a blazing fire in the lobby fireplace and more. Holiday themed productions are spread out across three stages, and you could even warm up with a pre-show cocktail at The Hogarth bar in the lobby!

On the Main Stage for one last time at CDT is Irving Berlin’s White Christmas , running from October 4 through February 7. In the Fireside venue, groups could catch a variety of holiday programming running from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Eve, including Rock & Roll Christmas Spectacular, Celtic Holiday Hooley, Ginger Commodore’s Christmas With a Whole Lotta Soul, A Grand Ole Opry Christmas, a Vintage Vegas New Years, and more. Those seeking some laughs won’t want to miss the best of comedy improvisation with Stevie Ray’s Comedy Cabaret and their holiday themed installation, Dashing Through The Snowplows . And come February, for the first time in 35 years, CDT will welcome Guys and Dolls back to the Main Stage. The cherry on top? Groups of 12 or more receive special rates and benefits.
A truly classic live performance venue since its opening in 1891, Carnegie Hall in New York City beckons groups to enjoy its wide range of exceptional musical performances offered each season on its three great stages: the renowned Stern Auditorium/ Perelman Stage, the intimate Weill Recital Hall, and the innovative Zankel Hall. There’s something for groups of all kinds at Carnegie Hall, whether they’re into jazz, world, or popular music, chamber performances or otherwise. It’s simple to fit a performance into almost any itinerary, because in addition to Carnegie Hall’s presentations, the venue is also home to more than 500 independently produced events each year.

Groups who want to go behind the scenes of the performing arts magic seen on stage at Carnegie Hall will love booking a private tour. It’s during this special experience that they’ll see this landmarked concert venue and national treasure in a whole new light, accompanied by delightful stories from expert docents. For a venue which has had the likes of George Gershwin, Billie Holiday, Judy Garland, and The Beatles grace its stages, would you expect anything less?

If iconic and culturally rich is the vibe you seek, look no further than Preservation Hall , situated in New Orleans’ French Quarter. The Hall’s history in and of itself makes the venue worth visiting, as it was here that racially-integrated bands and audiences shared music together during the Jim Crow era. Today, Preservation Hall is home to nightly acoustic live music, making it a staple on any New Orleans itinerary. Groups are sure to be enthralled by the talent of the current roster of 60 masters of traditional New Orleans Jazz, all of whom learned the traditional style from the greats who played before them, and are now working to pass it on themselves. Elevate the experience by booking a private performance—a truly unforgettable memory.

And of course, you can’t talk about live performances without mentioning the magic of Broadway in New York City. Groups will leave theaters awestruck after basking in the majesty of Broadway’s hottest shows, including classics like Wicked , The Lion King , Moulin Rouge!, and Cabaret , along with 2025 Tony Award®-winners like Buena Vista Social Club , Maybe Happy Ending and Death Becomes Her. And, resources like Broadway Inbound, Group Sales Box Office, and Disney Theatrical Sales pave the way for groups to have a truly seamless, memorable and special Broadway experience.
Beyond seeing a show on Broadway, groups won’t want to miss visiting the Museum of Broadway, located right in the heart of Times Square. The museum’s many permanent and rotating exhibits—made up of hundreds of rare costumes, props, artifacts and some incredible photo opportunities— make for the perfect companion to your group’s Broadway performance. There’s even an extensive “behind-the-scenes” section focused on the making of a Broadway show and what it’s like to be a professional working on Broadway!

GROUP IDEAS FOR FALL IN SHORES & ISLANDS OHIO
If summer has gone by too fast and you haven’t made it to Shores & Islands Ohio yet, don’t worry! It’s never too soon to start planning your next group tour to Shores & Islands. Fall makes for a wonderful season to experience the region. Not only does autumn offer cooler temperatures and lower costs, but the season is bountiful with fall festivals, apple and pumpkin picking, experiences with spirits, and much more. Check out the Shores & Islands events calendar to see the season’s offerings!
Take a scenic ride to Put-in-Bay on the Jet Express or Miller Ferry. The unique vantage point offers riders the chance to see the changing color of the leaves before spending a fun-filled day on the island. Plus, a well-timed return to the mainland creates a spectacular sunset view from aboard the boat. On the island, your group can explore via Island Transportation’s Tour Train, with stops at popular attractions. Or they can participate in special events, including Historic Weekend, Art in the Park, and Put-in-Bay Road Races.
Another perk of a fall visit is smaller crowds. At places like African Safari Wildlife Park, this can allow for a more personal experience. Less traffic means visitors can take more time to interact with the animals during the Drive-Thru Safari. The Walk-Thru Safari offers even more animals to see, including the recently added capybaras. A great field trip option, African Safari Wildlife Park offers discounts for all kinds of groups.
Lakeside Chautauqua is a well-known oasis for family reunions, camps, and conferences during the summer months. The gated community provides numerous recreational activities, entertainment, and group accommodations for its visitors. After Labor Day, however, a slower pace allows visitors to enjoy the peace nature brings and to really connect with each other. Slow does not equal boring though; especially with the excitement over events like the Lakeside Marblehead Lighthouse Festival.
If a chance for a strong spiritual connection is what you are looking for, Sorrowful Mother Shrine in Bellevue may be the place for your group pilgrimage or day of recollection. This site has both the serenity
of nature and options for prayer at the Shrine Chapel or the Stations of the Cross. Mass occurs daily, with confession taking place an hour before. The Shrine Cafeteria is also available to groups with advance notice.

OUTDOOR AND CULINARY ADVENTURES IN OTTAWA
Ottawa, Canada’s beautiful capital city, welcomes group and packaged travelers from around the world each year, offering a unique combination of outdoor adventure and culinary experiences. Home to landmark national sights and iconic museums, Ottawa is equally a place for those into the great outdoors.
ADVENTURE IN THE CITY
| In summer, groups can rent bicycles in the heart of the city or join a cycling tour and access over 500 miles of dedicated recreation pathways—many of which cross paths with the aforementioned national landmarks, others of which reach deep into the surrounding countryside. For those who would prefer a bigger shot of adrenalin, head directly to Interzip, a zipline that takes adventurers soaring 120 feet over the Ottawa River between Ontario and Quebec at speeds of up to 25 mph—all against the backdrop of historic Parliament Hill and the city’s downtown. A little further upriver but still well within the city, groups can board an inflated raft at Ottawa City Rafting and shoot the rapids with a guide at the helm. In winter, groups can skate on the world’s largest outdoor rink, the frozen Rideau Canal, which winds for five miles through the heart of the city.
ADVENTURE CLOSE BY
| Outside the city core, adventure in many forms awaits. Camp Fortune in nearby Gatineau Park offers ziplining, an aerial park, a mountain coaster and mountain biking in summer— and downhill skiing and snowboarding in winter. Gatineau Park is also a great place for hiking and rock climbing in summer and cross-country skiing, snow biking and snowshoeing in winter. Canada’s highest bungee jump—200 feet straight down over water—is just 20 minutes north of the city and an adrenalin rush inducer. About an hour west of the city, world class whitewater rafting draws adventurers to its class V rapids with Owl Rafting, Rafting Momentum and Wilderness Tours. North of the city, Abraska Laflèche
offers both aerial experiences and underground cave exploration. And Ottawa’s greenbelt provides trails for hiking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
RELAXATION AND REJUVENATION
There’s nothing like a visit to a spa after a day of adventure. Ottawa is home to North America’s largest spa—Nordik Spa, along with several others. Then it’s time for some nourishment. Ottawa’s culinary scene serves a diverse selection of offerings for groups and packaged travel. From casual to fine dining, to outdoor cafés overlooking scenic vistas, to walking culinary tours and more, there’s an experience for every taste. Join C’est Bon Ottawa for a guided walking and tasting tour through some of Ottawa’s best culinary neighborhoods. And hop aboard Brew Donkey Tours for a curated tour of regional breweries.

TOP TIPS
When visiting a cultural destination or attraction, consider these tips for making the most of your group’s experience:
Do your research ahead of time. Before your visit, take the time to explore and inform yourself and your group about the history or background of a particular site or cultural group it represents. Understanding the greater context of a place will undoubtedly enhance the overall experience!
Be present and ask questions! Avoid rushing through your visit by taking time to observe, reflect, and interact when possible. Staff and docents have much to offer in terms of knowledge and experience, so pick their brains when appropriate.
Respect the culture and support the local community. During your visit, ensure you’re aware of customs, dress codes, photography rules and sacred spaces. If you’re doing some shopping or dining while in the area, choose to make your purchases from local artisans or eat at local cultural restaurants.
