Thank you, Patrick, for 24 incredible years!

Surround Sound examines a musical idea that long predates recorded audio: the use of space as a compositional tool. Long before the modern listener encountered sound through speakers, composers were already writing for separation, distance, echo, and overlap. In churches and chapels especially, music could be heard not as a single block of sound from one direction, but as something exchanged across a room, layered from multiple points, or suspended in the air. Space was not simply an acoustic condition: it shaped the listener’s experience and, in many cases, the music itself.
The program begins in Spain, with O Virgo Splendens and Stella Splendens from the Llibre Vermell de Montserrat, a late medieval manuscript associated with the great pilgrimage site at Montserrat, home to the revered Black Madonna, La Moreneta. These songs belong to a devotional culture in which music accompanied collective movement, ritual, and acts of veneration. They are followed
by works of Tomás Luis de Victoria and Francisco Guerrero, two central figures in sixteenth-century Spanish sacred music. Both composers worked within the polyphonic traditions of the Renaissance, but each brought a distinct expressive profile to the liturgy. Victoria’s writing is often marked by compression, intensity, and close attention to text. Guerrero, whose career was rooted in Seville and whose music circulated widely in both Spain and the Spanish Americas, writes with a broader lyricism and a strong sense of vocal line. In both, one hears music written for reverberant sacred space, where sonority, pacing, and textual clarity must exist in careful balance.
The second set shows how modern composers have returned to these older spatial possibilities and reimagined them in new ways. Knut Nystedt’s treatment of Bach, Benjamin Britten’s writing for separated groups, and Caroline Shaw’s interest in vocal texture and distance all depend on the listener’s awareness of sound
unfolding in space. In some of these works, aleatory (passages in which performers are allowed a degree of rhythmic independence rather than moving in strict synchronization) produces a texture that feels less coordinated than suspended. The effect is not disorder, but the loosening and refracting of time. These composers draw on old materials and sacred forms, but they do so with modern ears, using spatial separation and independence of motion to create sonorities that can seem to hover outside ordinary pulse.
The final set belongs to Claudio Monteverdi, whose music stands at the threshold between the Renaissance and the Baroque. Monteverdi inherited the contrapuntal discipline of the sixteenth century, but he pushed it toward greater contrast, sharper declamation, and more deliberate theatrical effect. The motets and psalm settings heard here show how fully sacred music could absorb the new expressive priorities of the
early seventeenth century. Texture becomes more sectional, rhetoric more immediate, and musical gestures more clearly shaped around surprise, response, and projection. In that sense, Monteverdi does not simply conclude the Renaissance: he helps establish a musical language in which drama, contrast, and the controlled use of sonic space become central expressive means.
Taken together, these works suggest that “surround sound” is not a modern invention, but a very old artistic ambition. Across centuries, composers have used space to expand the expressive reach of music: to heighten devotion, suspend time, and place the listener not just in front of sound, but inside it.

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem.
O shining Virgin, here on this lofty mountain, Everywhere adorned with gleaming miracles, Which all the faithful ascend.
With your gentle eye of mercy
Behold the sinner bound by the rope of sins, Lest they be burdened by the blows of hell, But through your prayer be called among the blessed.
Radiant star on the mountain, like a miraculous sunbeam, hear the divided people. All joyous people come together: rich and poor, young and old, climb the mountain to see with their own eyes, and return from it filled with grace.
Radiant star…
Rulers and magnates of royal stripes, the mighty of the world, possessing grace, proclaim their sins, beating their breast, and call on bended knee: Ave Maria.
Radiant star…
All these groups assemble here to present themselves, to remember their vows and keep them as well. By enriching this temple, adorning it with jewels so that all may see and return in joy, partaking of salvation.

Beatus Vir
Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643)
Beatus vir qui timet Dominum: in mandatis ejus volet nimis.
Potens in terra erit semen ejus; generatio rectorum benedicetur.
Gloria et divitiae in domo ejus: et justitia ejus manet in saeculum saeculi.
Dispersit, dedit pauperibus; justitia ejus manet in saeculum saeculi: cornu ejus exaltabitur in gloria.
Peccator videbit, et irascetur; dentibus suis fremet et tabescet: desiderium peccatorum peribit.
Blessed is the man that fears the Lord: he has great delight in his commandments.
His seed will be mighty on earth; the generation of the faithful will be blessed.
Riches and plenty will be in his house: and his righteousness endures for ever.
Unto the godly there arise up light in the darkness: he is merciful, loving, and righteous.
A good man is merciful, and lends and will guide his words with discretion: for he will never be moved.
The righteous will be in everlasting remembrance; he will not be afraid of evil tidings.
His heart stands fast and believes in the Lord, His heart is established and will not shrink; until he see his desire upon his enemies.
He has dispersed abroad, and given to the poor: his righteousness remains for ever: his horn will be exalted with honor.
The ungodly will see it, and it will grieve him; he will gnash with his teeth, and consume away: the desire of the ungodly will perish.

Hail, star of the sea, loving Mother of God, Ever-virgin, Heaven’s gate. Who received joy from Gabriel’s mouth, giving us peace, reversing Eve’s name. Break the chains of sinners, bring light to the blind, drive away our evils, ask for all good.
Show yourself to be a mother, may He accept prayers through you, He who was born for us, chose to be yours. O unique virgin, meek above all, make us absolved from sin, gentle and chaste. Keep our life pure, make the journey safe, so that in seeing Jesus, we may rejoice together. Let there be praise to God the Father, Glory to Christ in the highest, to the Holy Spirit, one honor to all three. Amen.
This Confessor, dedicated to the Lord, Whose feast the people celebrate across the world, This day has deserved in joy, To ascend to the innermost Heaven.
At his holy tomb, where they throng, The limbs of the sick, now healed No matter by what ailment they were burdened, Are restored to them.
Salvation, honor, and power be to Him Who from His dwelling above the highest heavens Governs the working of the whole world, The Three in One. Amen.
Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643)
Dixit Dominus Domino meo:
Sede a dextris meis.
Donec ponam inimicos tuos, scabellum pedum tuorum.
Virgam virtutis tuae emittet
Dominus ex Sion: dominare in medio inimicorum tuorum.
Tecum principium in die virtutis tuae in splendoribus sanctorum: ex utero ante luciferum genui te.
Juravit Dominus, et non poenitebit eum: tu es sacerdos in aeternum secundum ordinem Melchisedech.
Dominus a dextris tuis confregit in die irae suae reges. Judicabit in nationibus, implebit ruinas: conquassabit capita in terra multorum.
De torrente in via bibet: propterea exaltabit caput.
Gloria Patri, et Filio, et Spiritui Sancto. Sicut erat in principio, et nunc, et semper, et in saecula saeculorum. Amen.
The Lord said unto my Lord: Sit at my right hand, Until I make your enemies your footstool.
The Lord will send the rod of your strength out of Zion: to rule in the midst of your enemies.
You will be the dominion in the day of your power amid the brightness of the saints: the dew of your birth is the womb of the morning.
The Lord has sworn, and will not repent. you art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.
The Lord at thy right hand will strike even kings in the day of his wrath. He will judge among the nations, he will fill them with ruin: and shake to pieces the heads of many on earth.
He will drink of the brook in the way: therefore will he lift up the head.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
