America gets a double dose of stupid from the guys bringing you the Golden Age of Quackery
P
resident Donald Trump has now turned his dangerous and unfounded suspicion about childhood vaccines into federal policy. It is a menacing assault on the hard-won victories of science, medicine and evidence. Trump on Monday signed an executive order calling for doctors and medical practitioners to dispense childhood vaccines across separate medical visits, and for the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine to be divided into three individual shots. He issued a presidential fiat that not only takes the place of how science and medicine research and practices are delivered to the American public, but he also upended the critical foundations with a dangerous boatload of quackery. It was a throwback to my DAVE childhood, where moms would PERRY collect every kid on the block for Editor “Chickenpox Parties” when one kid broke out in spots or sores. Despite the legends, doctors did not recommend the stunts. Before the vaccine for chicken pox became widespread, chickenpox infected about 4 million children a year, resulting in about 10,000 kids ending up in hospitals and 100 of them dying. Real science helped solve that problem, until now. Every reputable news source has consistently reported that all credible medical and science groups and organizations have made clear that Trump’s claims about vaccines are unproven. And in many cases, his lies are provably untrue. The science behind how and when children should receive vaccines has not suddenly changed. Trump, and the equally dangerously unqualified Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr, nonetheless continue saying that the number or timing of childhood vaccines might contribute to autism. That claim has been thoroughly discredited. According to qualified reporting recently, and for several years, scientific consensus and decades of studies have firmly concluded that there is no connection between childhood vaccines and autism. None. Dr. Andrew Racine, president of the American Academy of Pediatrics, cited more than 40 methodologically well-designed studies conducted in seven countries involving more than 5 million children. His conclusion leaves no room for guessing: There is no link.

That should end the argument. Instead, Trump and Kennedy are doubling down, and they are risking American children, and all of America, with their ill-conceived stunt. Kennedy was a notorious anti-vaccine activist before entering politics, making a living as an ambulance-chasing lawyer taking on medical cases. As health secretary, he has fired the entire 17-member federal vaccine advisory committee and installed replacements who issued unjustified, more restrictive recommendations. A federal judge has since halted those recommendations. Kennedy also personally directed the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to abandon its position that vaccines do not cause autism without supplying any new evidence to justify the change. Nothing is more contrary to legitimate science and medicine than who Kennedy is and what he has done. The vaccine revolution is among humanity’s extraordinary achievements. The story is transparent and constantly scrutinized by real scien-
took a decidedly musical turn Monday when Anderson banged out a new Aurora hit tune, “War Wheels On A Gavel Road.” Yours truly makes no apologies here to Lucinda Williams, who is invited to sing along next week. For three minutes on Monday, the time allotted to the little people to make a big deal out of something during the bi-weekly meetings, Anderson banged on the lectern with his own mini-gavel. The whack-job was directed at Mayor Mike Coffman’s own frequent hammering of his own gavel against Anderson and other progressive annoyances. “Bang. Bang. Bang. Bang-bang. Bang. Bang...” pretty much in three-four “Waltz” time, converted to schmaltz time, as members of the city council intended to be annoyed by the stunt pretended not to be annoyed or even aware. The unnerving jamboree highlight came when Councilmember Stephanie Hancock, a frequent target of Anderson’s glare-downs, joined in from the dais, offering an off-tempo foil tap, which, altogether, had the room grooving for a few long seconds. Queries to those who made reports to your faithful affiant overnight made clear they recalled little else from the council meeting. Impressed, Quid demands this rag provide gavels to the staff hacks, allowing! for THE! regular and UN-fetterED use of ALL CAPS and ex!claim!ation! marks!!!!! And!!!!!that’s all the news that fits.
tists and doctors. Vaccines are rigorously studied, continuously monitored are responsible for preventing a wide range of dangerous and even deadly human diseases. Trump’s timing, a stunning distraction from his disastrous Iran War debacle, could hardly be worse. Students are returning to classrooms while the country is confronting a measles outbreak that experts warn could cause the United States to lose its measles-elimination status. At the same time, federal data show kindergarten vaccination rates declining and exemptions reaching an all-time high in schools, including Colorado. Spacing vaccines out may sound responsibly cautious to a naive and anxious parent. But public-health experts warn that it can instead needlessly leave children vulnerable to infection before they return for another appointment. Worse, studies cited by the Associated Press this week found that combination vaccines make children more likely to complete all recommended vaccinations by age 2 than single-shot approaches, according to reports this week. This is precisely where physicians and qualified public-health officials must stop whispering or just offering any kind of lip service. Parents deserve clear advice from their own doctors and local health institutions. They don’t need political mandates masquerading as science or goodwill. Sen. Bill Cassidy, a Republican and physician who chairs the Senate Health Committee, made clear how non-partisan Trump’s vaccine farce is. “The President does not have the expertise to make these changes,” he said. Colorado law does not make anyone get any vaccine, nor any medical procedure they don’t want for themselves or their children. What the law does is ensure that anti-vaxers don’t make health decisions for responsible, cogent parents, and endanger their children, by pushing unvaccinated children into the school community, putting everyone at risk. Congress, state lawmakers and the science and medical communities need to bring the curtain down on this lurid sideshow immediately.

Aurora college denies restricting speech amid controversy over student news site “WE’RE DISTURBED BY HOW FAR THE COLLEGE HAS GONE IN SUPPRESSING STUDENT SPEECH” BY MCKENNA HARFORD, Sentinel Staff Writer
A
national organization aimed at protecting free speech is denouncing the Community College of Aurora for issuing “unconstitutional demands” of student journalists, including prohibiting them from conducting interviews and publishing stories. The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression sent a letter Thursday on behalf of student journalist Andy Green and the independent student media organization he founded, called FoxTalk, urging the Community College of Aurora to correct “its blatant violation of Green’s and FoxTalk’s First Amendment rights.” The online publication is at ReadFoxTalk.com. Green is facing disciplinary action from the college for interviewing students and publishing stories after administrators demanded he pause publication and interviews while FoxTalk went through the process to become an official student-led organization. However, the college maintains that it has not restricted any publication or speech. In a statement, Courtney Butler, executive director of strategic communications for the Community College of Aurora, said the school supports freedom of speech and expression. “Students do not need the college’s permission to express their views, engage in journalism, or publish independently,” Butler said. The statement adds that the school has viewpoint-neutral procedures to be recognized as a college-affiliated organization, which are “applied consistently to student organizations without regard to their mission, beliefs, or editorial viewpoint.” The school maintains it has worked with Green and FoxTalk to complete the process. “The matter concerns compliance with the same organizational requirements applicable to other students seeking official college recognition and resources — not the content or viewpoint of the proposed publication,” Butler said. The statement said that because the situation involves a student and potential student records, it cannot discuss “specific communications or additional details.” An Aug. 7 response to FIRE’s
letter said the college is reviewing the concerns and will respond when the review is complete. FIRE urged CCA to drop its disciplinary actions and lift its publication ban. Green first established FoxTalk as a student-led organization in March, but then received a demand from administration in April to “pause online stories and student outreach” until the operational structure of FoxTalk was formalized, according to emails between Green and school administrators provided to the Sentinel. The CCA school mascot is the fox. FoxTalk is the first student-led media organization at CCA, to Green’s knowledge. Administrators also requested FoxTalk send a monthly email “outlining the articles and events you plan to cover,” get waivers for photography and interviews and have all stories get approval from the school’s strategic communications team prior to publication. Green told the Sentinel he was concerned about the request to stop interviews and publication, which he said “blurs the line between an independent student publication and institutional communications.” He said he never got clarity on why CCA was concerned about FoxTalk conducting interviews and publishing stories. “We are a four-month-old student publication and we should not need seven administrators, multiple conduct proceedings and the college president’s office involved just to figure out whether we can publish stories and interview students,” Green said. In May, the college sent Green specific language to post on the FoxTalk website and Green’s personal substack, which states that the publications are not official communication channels for the school. The language referred to FoxTalk as “a student-led publication” that “operates independently and is not an official communications channel of the Community College of Aurora.” That language is currently on the FoxTalk website. As Green continued to work with college administrators to establish FoxTalk, he also continued publishing stories. Then in July, Green found out he was facing dis-

ciplinary action for an allegation that he was “interviewing students while at Lowry Studios,” according to a letter sent by the college. The college said Green conducting interviews constituted a “failure to comply with or follow the lawful directives of College employees.” A disciplinary process found Green responsible for violating the student code of conduct and he was issued an institutional warning. He appealed and was denied. A second disciplinary allegation was made against Green, FoxTalk and other student journalists on July 23, which “alleges FoxTalk of interviewing students, continued reporting and posting via the FoxTalk website, contacting CCA campus partners in connection to FoxTalk, and not following directives” from college administrators. Green is still in the disciplinary process for that allegation. Green said several other FoxTalk contributors have also been disciplined. Dominic Coletti, program officer at FIRE’s Student Press Freedom Initiative, said he has not seen “a college, or even high school, case that is as sweeping in its restrictions on student speech.” Coletti said the First Amendment protects student journalists from prior restraint and most censorship. “We’re disturbed by how far the college has gone in suppressing student speech,” Coletti said. Coletti said the potential First Amendment issues with CCA’s actions include prior restraint, prior review of articles and compelled speech, all of which chills speech.
He noted the contradiction of wanting to distance the FoxTalk website from official communications channels, while also wanting oversight. “They’re saying ‘We’re not liable for whatever happens here and it’s not the official voice of the college,’ but also they want to control (Green’s) ability to publish and those two things can’t both be true,” Coletti said. Coletti also disputed CCA’s claim that it’s applying the same standards to all student-led organizations, adding that CCA can’t require student-led organizations to submit to unconstitutional rules. “The college seems to think that it can justify this as a normal part of its student organization registration protocols, but what it can’t do is say ‘Until you complete these protocols, nobody in your group is allowed to speak,’” he said. A March email from the college said student-led organizations must have a faculty advisor and three student members, as well as submit a membership roster and an organizational constitution, and take training. Emails confirm that Green submitted a roster and constitution, as well as completed training. However, administrators later requested FoxTalk submit information about its “operational structure and organizational framework,” telling Green he could not publish stories until the college approved the structure. Coletti said setting different standards for media organizations, even if all media are held to the same standards, from other stu-
dent organizations is still a type of content-based restriction. “I find it hard to believe that other student groups are being required to have conversations with the college about the exact way they’re going to interact with spokespeople, faculty and staff,” Coletti said. “I get the impression that the math club just gets to talk to math professors whenever they want.” Coletti also raised concerns about the college requesting a complete roster of contributors to FoxTalk, which risks chilling student association with the news media site for fear of retaliation. Colorado law does provide protections from censorship to student journalists in public schools, but the law does not currently apply to college students, according to the Student Press Law Center. The law prevents schools from prior restraint, which is when administrators attempt to prevent publication of stories, and states that students are responsible for content decisions. Schools can prevent publication of unprotected speech, such as obscenity or libel. Jack Kennedy, a former executive director for the Colorado Student Media Association, said no school is able to control how interviews are conducted and they can’t restrict who students speak with. “The idea that you’d have to run it by some powers-that-be so that you could even talk to a football player about his game last weekend is just crazy talk by administrators,” he said.

Aurora City Council rejects data center moratorium, approves new rules, water regs City lawmakers this week opposed a data center moratorium but moved forward with new regulations prohibiting excessive water and requiring operators to mitigate potential residential impacts. On Aug. 11, council voted 7-4 to approve a resolution to create data center specific regulations, and opposed another more broad resolution that would have included a pause on data center development. Councilmembers Alison Coombs, Alli Jackson, Ruben Medina and Amy Wiles opposed the resolution. The resolution identifies two specific regulations: a prohibition on the use of evaporative cooling, which is a type of cooling system data centers use that can be water-intensive, and a requirement for setbacks and landscape buffers for data centers in certain areas, such as mixed-use developments. It also leaves the door open for other regulations, as recommended by the city manager. The city manager has 35 days to bring back recommended changes. The regulations would apply to future data center developments and not to data centers in the development process. At a June town hall meeting, the city said there were five data centers in the development process and nine already established. Councilmember Curtis Gardner, who sponsored the resolution, said the regulations balance addressing concerns and allowing businesses to operate. “I’m looking forward to coming up with some appropriate safeguards, both for residents and businesses that operate within the city,” Gardner said. The resolution was proposed as an alternative option to one sponsored by Councilmember Amy Wiles. Wiles’ resolution was opposed by Councilmembers Rob Andrews, Françoise Bergan, Gardner, Stephanie Hancock and Angela Lawson. Mayor Mike Coffman was the tie-breaking vote. Coffman said his decision to support the narrower regulations came down to the 30-day timeline. Wiles’ resolution included an indefinite pause on new development applications for data centers. A separate plan for a six-month moratorium for data centers was removed from the agenda at the beginning of the meeting. While Wiles’ resolution also prohibited closed loop cooling, it also introduced land-use regulations to restrict where data centers can be located and requirements to mitigate adverse neighborhood impacts by requiring things like setbacks, buffers and special or conditional use permits. Wiles emphasized her resolution was not anti-business, but pro-community and aimed to incentivize responsible business. Wiles said the goal was to locate data centers in appropriate places and encourage reasonable regulations. “Asking data centers to be good community partners should not be too much to ask,” Wiles said. “It’s simply an ask to get things right before we get too far down the road.” Some council members who opposed Wiles’ regulations noted that data centers are significant contributors to the city’s revenue and emphasized that they don’t want to drive business away. City Manager Jason Batchelor said data centers have generated more
than $24 million in revenue. Public commenters supported Wiles’ broader regulations. They raised concerns about the demand data centers have on water and electricity, as well as potential negative effects on residential areas and the environment. They supported stricter zoning to limit where data centers can locate and requirements for impact mitigation, such as landscaping buffers and setbacks. Commenters specifically said they appreciated the six-month moratorium so that the city can research what regulations will best protect resources and neighborhoods. The city has nine established data centers and has some regulations for data centers in place. Data centers are restricted in location to areas that are zoned industrial, airport districts or mixed-use office-industrial. Data centers can be built in certain mixed-use zoning restrictions under the conditional use process, which has additional requirements for public hearings and city council gets the ultimate decision. Water use for data centers is governed by the city’s large water user guide. For noise pollution, the city’s unified development code restricts the noise level at data centers to the same level as other businesses, with different allowances based on zoning and time. — McKenna Harford, Sentinel Staff Writer
Xcel officials told fire officials there was no gas hazard outside of the GEO ICE facility at the time of the complaints. Adams County Health Department officials said they did not receive any reports of a gas leak at the facility or sickened inmates, according to Adams County Health Department spokesperson Jennifer Lucero-Alvarez. A spokesperson for a local inmate support group, who asked not to be identified for fear of reprisals against inmates being kept inside the facility, said that inmates in other pods also reported the strong odor. The person said that inmates were told the odor was coming from outside the building and GEO ICE officials were dismissive of any threat. Officials for ICE Denver Public Affairs said the complaints to local utility and fire officials all came from outside
the facility and were malicious. “Reports of a gas leak at the Denver Contract Detention Facility are false,” ICE officials said in a statement to the Sentinel. “ Over the weekend, a caller from outside the facility reported a gas leak in what appears to have been a hoax. No gas leak was found, and no evacuations were ordered. This appears to be another attempt to disrupt operations and undermine ICE’s mission to uphold the nation’s immigration laws.” Inmate activists said an outside agency should interview and screen inmates for possible exposure to natural gas or other substances. Staff officials from the offices of Aurora Democratic Congressperson Jason Crow and Colorado Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet inspected the facility on July 27, remarking in a report that they were unable to glean from GEO ICE
officials how many inmates were inside the facility. They did remark, however, that there were ventilation and cooling problems inside Pod C, which is where inmates said they were exposed to the gas odors. “While touring the pod in the C wing, it was noticeably warmer,” congressional staff inspectors said in their report. “GEO and ICE staff mentioned that they were actively working on fixing the AC. Staff observed fans and portable AC, coolers, and water in the pod. The wall thermometer showed 80 degrees Fahrenheit.” The congressional report also said that GEO ICE officials specifically said there were no active cases of tuberculo-

GEO ICE detention officials call inmate complaints about a gas leak was a ‘hoax’ after complaints of illness Inmates at Aurora’s immigrant detention center say they were sickened last weekend by what they assumed to be natural gas odors and a possible leak, but spokespersons for the private prison say the reports were a malicious prank from outside the facility. A current GEO ICE detention center inmate in Aurora, speaking with a reporter for El Comercio de Colorado news, said that over the weekend, he was exposed to what smelled like natural gas in the C Pod of the facility at 3130 Oakland St. “On Friday it was (faint),” said the inmate, who is not being identified for fear of reprisal. The recorded conversation was shared with the Sentinel. “I didn’t feel it as much. Saturday was terribly awful. It was 9 PM. I started feeling a strong smell. Very strong. Headaches, vomiting, and also feeling like (I) could faint, and a lot of eye pain.” The inmate said they and other inmates were sickened by the smell each evening, “before they locked us in.” Aurora Fire Rescue officials said they received three calls from outside the detention center over the weekend reporting gas odors. The first call was at about 12:30 p.m. Aug. 8. The second call was reported at about midnight Aug. 9, according to Aurora Fire Rescue spokesperson Eric Hurst. Another report was made at about noon Aug. 10. “All three incidents were reported by people who were not on site,” Hurst said. “During the incidents the facility staff did not report any problems or occupants feeling sick.” Across the weekend, gas odors were also reported near the GEO ICE facility, one a few blocks northwest of the detention center, Hurst said. “Xcel (Energy) made contact with a business using a cleaning solution that smelled similar to propane gas and our crew detected the odor outside GEO hours later,” Hurst said.

Advocates demand state action as GEO Group blocks health probes into TB case at Aurora immigration jail Six weeks after local officials issued a public health order concerning a confirmed active case of tuberculosis at an immigration detention center in Aurora,
the private company that runs the facility still has not allowed access for health officials to complete a legally-required investigation. The result is a standoff between state and local government and a company unwilling to cooperate. On Aug. 10, community advocates once again called for more pressure from the state government, issuing their own “people’s public health order” at the Colorado Capitol, steps from Gov. Jared Polis’ office. “We are here to demand that the state health department and the governor’s office do everything in their power, including issuing a state public health order, to hold the GEO Group accountable for their wrongdoing,” Maureen Daly, a retired pediatrician, said. The GEO Group runs the detention
facility for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement as a federal contractor. Advocates, including Daly, worry that state agencies have not pushed harder against GEO’s obstruction out of fear of litigation. GEO is already suing the state over a new law that gives the state increased health and safety inspection authority. “I don’t think what The GEO Group will do or will not do should have anything to do with this public health decision,” Daly said. “This should be about protecting the health of the people of Colorado.” The symbolic people’s order, referring to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, states that the “inaction and lack of urgency from the Governor’s office and CDPHE
have lost our trust.” It demands access to the facility so health officials can complete a proper investigation into the confirmed tuberculosis case and potential spread of the disease. Community members signed an oversized printout of the order in front of the Capitol. An online version also allows people to endorse it. It states that people recently released from the facility have reported people testing positive for tuberculosis through a skin test. In various statements to reporters, ICE contends that the infected person was “treated, cleared, and removed from the country” and that there are no other cases in the detention center. GEO determined that 61 people were exposed to the original case and placed in a “precautionary cohort,” according to an oversight report last month from Rep. Jason Crow’s office. Jill Hunsaker Ryan, the executive director of the CDPHE, listened to speakers and spoke with rally attendees on Monday for about 15 minutes. “I appreciate the advocates,” she said. “I appreciate what they’re doing today and I understand why they’re concerned.” Ryan said CDPHE used to have a “collegial” relationship with GEO and could enter the facility to inspect and help with disease control. That changed about six months ago, when she said the company began to “shut out” the state. “We’ve started with the communication route. We used to work together, so we asked our federal partners … to implore them to work with us again. If that doesn’t work, nothing’s off the table,” she said. “It’s an unprecedented situation to have a federal contractor not respond to a public health order.” CDPHE set a deadline for GEO to comply with Adam County’s public health order by July 17, but that date passed without consequence. Ryan said that a CDPHE-issued public health order would carry the same authority, and she’s unsure it would force compliance. It would, however, have the enforcement weight of the attorney general’s office behind it. While speaking with Ryan, community members told her the state should start levying fines on GEO, questioned “where the dam breaks” on the issue, and said they will continue putting pressure on the state until there is a CDPHE public health order. “If we don’t hold the line on this, what is going to make our government act?” said Andrea Loya, the executive director of Casa de Paz, which supports people recently released from the GEO detention center. “If (tuberculosis) isn’t enough, what will be?” In a statement, Polis spokesperson Ally Sullivan said the governor’s office is “actively monitoring the situation” and has repeatedly requested information from GEO. She did not answer a question about whether the state worries about possible litigation over a second public health order. “The state is considering next steps including the option of a public health order should it be necessary,” she wrote. “GEO asserts there is not an active case or an outbreak at the facility, and we hope that is true, but we lack critical information to ensure that is the case. The state will continue to evaluate the public health risk and is asking GEO to work with Adams County Health or CDPHE to promptly resolve this matter.” — Sara Wilson, Colorado Newsline
SCHOOLS AND EDUCATION
New Momentum Scholarship offers free tuition at Community College of Aurora for 2026 APS graduates ‘Recent Aurora Public Schools graduates who took college courses while in high school can still enroll at Community College of Aurora this fall with the potential to receive up to three years of tuition-free classes through a new scholarship program. The Momentum Scholarship is available to 2026 graduates of APS high schools who completed at least one concurrent enrollment course through CCA and meet other eligibility requirements, CCA officials said in a statement Friday. Fall classes begin Aug. 17. Students must enroll full time at CCA, taking between 12 and 18 credit hours, enroll in courses eligible for financial aid and qualify for state or federal financial aid through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or Colorado Application for State Financial Aid. There is no separate application for the Momentum Scholarship. Eligible students automatically receive full tuition coverage for their certificate or associate degree, with the scholarship applied around the 12th day of classes, according to CCA officials. Students can receive the scholarship for up to three years as long as they remain eligible. CCA is offering “Momentum Monday” workshops to help students determine their eligibility and complete the enrollment process. The scholarship was first announced this year as a way to reduce the cost of higher education for APS students who had already participated in CCA’s concurrent enrollment program. “Taking advantage of concurrent enrollment opportunities during high school will truly become transformative for our students,” APS Superintendent Michael Giles said in a statement. “This new partnership solidifies the educational pathway from high school to higher education.” The college said the scholarship is intended to help students earn a certificate or associate degree with less student loan debt. According to 2023 state data cited by CCA, 49.3% of Colorado college graduates seeking bachelor degrees had student loan debt, compared with 29.3% of CCA graduates. Momentum Scholarship recipients also have access to CCA programs and support services intended to prepare students for employment after graduation or to transfer to a four-year college or university. “The second most common reason students leave college is affordability,” Clair E. Collins, CCA’s vice president of enrollment success and completion, said in the release. “The Momentum Scholarship addresses this barrier by keeping costs down, helping students build academic momentum, and allowing them to continue their education in the same community where they graduate from high school.” — Sentinel Staff ›› See METRO, 17

Aurora City Council determining which businesses too close to together cause problems for the community BY MCKENNA HARFORD, Sentinel Staff Writer
A
controversial proposal to limit the number of businesses in Aurora that some say pose health and safety risks to neighborhoods is returning to city council for further discussion. At an Aug. 10 study session, lawmakers supported moving forward with a socioeconomic impact permit proposal, which would restrict certain businesses, such as vape and liquor stores, from concentrating next to one another. Monday’s discussion was not nearly as contentious as past conversations about similar proposals, with almost no objections or concerns shared by council members. Council members Curtis Gardner and Alli Jackson were not at Monday’s study session. The proposal is sponsored by Councilmember Alison Coombs, who said the intention is to encourage diversity in business types and deter crime in high-risk areas. “The main purpose is essentially to allow the city to have some levers to ensure that when we’re licensing businesses in an area that we’re promoting a broader mix of business uses in any given area and that we’re not having a high concentration of uses that have a tendency to negatively impact health or public safety within that area,” Coombs said. Mayor Mike Coffman echoed Coombs in his support, saying the proliferation of these kinds of businesses can create a predatory environment in poor neighborhoods. Council proponents of the permit say it will reduce crime, encourage other businesses to move in and support a more equitable distribution of businesses. Previous city councils have been split in supporting the proposal, though the divide has not been partisan, with past concerns focused on over-regulation by local government, impacts on small businesses and the potential for gentrification. The proposal targets vape and smoke shops, pawnshops and second-hand buyers, check-cashing businesses, cannabis dispensaries, liquor stores and extended-occupancy motels. Convenience stores that sell age-restricted items are also included, as well as bars, hookah lounges and event spaces that operate after midnight in high-risk areas. Exceptions are convenience stores that mostly sell groceries, large grocery stores that also sell liquor and tobacco products and specialty secondhand stores. While existing targeted businesses would be allowed to continue operating, future, new businesses would be limited under the proposed distance restrictions. Existing businesses will be subject to the permit criteria of not having significant code violations or patterns of neglect. If an established targeted business leaves a vacancy, the proposal would allow a landlord to lease to the same kind of business — but only within six months. The proposal calls for at least 300 feet between the restricted business types, which would effectively prevent multiple targeted businesses in most strip malls and retail centers. If approved, it would preclude, for ex-
ample, a liquor store from being closer than 300 feet from a vape shop. Two restricted businesses of the same type would have to be at least 2,000 feet apart, according to the proposal, further limiting concentrations of businesses like vape shops. In addition, restricted businesses would have to be 500 feet from light-rail stations and major bus junctions. There are also specific restrictions for extended-occupancy motels that would require 1,000 feet of distance from any other targeted business and a restriction on any of the targeted businesses from locating in a blighted or mostly vacant retail center. Permits would cost businesses $138 and be good for two years. The city estimates there to be 350 permit holders. The revenue from permits will pay for a $24,000 per year risk terrain modeling software, which identifies environmental factors contributing to crime. Risk terrain modeling shows some businesses attract police calls for a variety of issues and crimes. By limiting the concentration of those businesses, cities hope to reduce the need for police activity and profiling people who patronize them as possible suspects. The permits can be revoked for a pattern of neglect, public nuisance violations and closing for more than six months. The city hopes to encourage businesses to implement environmental elements to deter crime, such as lighting, landscaping and fencing.

The risks of waiting too long to harvest garden vegetables BY JESSICA DAMIANO, Associated Press and MOLLY GAINES, CSU EXTENSION, Denver Master Gardener
W
e sowed. We planted. We watered, watched and waited. And now, beanstalks are reaching for the heavens, tomatoes are getting plump and zucchini are seemingly doubling in size overnight. Timing their harvests is a balancing act, and in many cases you, as gardener, are forced to choose between optimal flavor and yield. Sometimes, one must be compromised in favor of the other — or to save your crop. Just don’t wait too long.
Should you wait for tomatoes to fully ripen?
Tomatoes are ripe when their mature color — red, yellow, orange, purple, etc. — is uniform. But waiting for that perfect vine-ripened moment often means risking loss. Plump, juicy tomatoes may split open on the vine or be devoured by hungry critters, who know a perfectly ripe tomato when they see one. I pick my tomatoes a few days before they reach their peak, then let them continue to ripen upside-down on the kitchen counter (the placement helps prevent bruising at the bottom). In fact, as long as at least half the tomato is taking on color, it will ripen well indoors.
How to know when six other garden vegetables are ready to pick
Cucumbers should be green, firm and glossy. Standard types are best harvested when they’re between 6 and 8 inches long;
pickling types typically top out at 2-4 inches long (5 to 10 centimeters). They grow rapidly, so check plants daily. Wait too long and they’ll turn yellow and bitter. Green bean pods should be plump but not bulging, and firm enough to snap when bent. Harvest the “ready” ones daily because the more you pick, the more the plant will produce; if you don’t remove the ripe beans, production will slow to a crawl. Zucchini grows very quickly, so check plants daily and harvest when the zucchinis are 6-8 inches long and their skin is soft enough to pierce easily with your fingernail. This is also the ideal size for sweetness. Posting a photo of an 18-inch zucchini might amuse your friends, but you probably won’t enjoy eating its tough, seed-filled flesh. On the other hand, eggplants tend to stop growing when they reach peak ripeness. Shiny skin is another indicator of maturity. Grab it while you can, because if you wait too long, their skin will turn dull and fade in color — and you’ll be left deciding whether to eat or toss the soft, spongy, bitter, hard-seed-filled poor excuse for an eggplant. Corn will tell you it’s ready when its silks turn brown. Husks should be fresh, green and feel full. If you’re not certain it’s ready, peel the husk back slightly, just enough to reveal the top row of kernels, and pierce one with your fingernail. If the “juice” inside is milky, it’s ready. If it’s watery, close it up and try again in a few days. But if there isn’t any liquid inside, the corn is past its prime. That means the kernels’ wonderful sugars will have
turned into starch. You can’t go wrong with peppers though: Pick them at their immature green stage or wait until they turn red, yellow or orange. The longer they’re left on the plant, the sweeter (or hotter) they’ll be, but they’ll be perfectly edible either way.
When matters
For Colorado vegetable gardeners, late summer is the payoff for months of planting, watering and weeding. But knowing when to harvest can be just as important as knowing what to plant. Molly Gaines, a CSU Extension Denver Master Gardener, recommends starting the day with a walk through the garden to check for vegetables that are ready to pick. Morning is an ideal time to harvest because cooler temperatures help vegetables retain moisture and stay fresher as they make their way to the kitchen, Gaines said. Gardeners should not rely too heavily on the “days to harvest” information printed on seed packets or plant tags. Those numbers are estimates, and Colorado growing conditions can affect how quickly vegetables mature. Soil fertility, sunlight, heat and water all play a role. Gaines said gardeners should watch their plants closely and harvest frequently. Many vegetables are best picked while they are still relatively small. Cucumbers and summer squash, for example, can become oversized and less enjoyable to eat if they are left on the plant too long.
Keep ‘em coming
Regular picking also can encourage plants to keep producing. That can be especially helpful with prolific summer crops such as cucumbers, green beans and squash. Colorado’s growing conditions can vary considerably, even within the same garden. Gaines noted that some of her own red onions were taking longer to mature because they were partially shaded by taller plants. For gardeners heading out of town, Gaines suggests asking a neighbor or friend to keep up with the harvest. A willing helper can keep vegetables from becoming overripe while ensuring the garden continues producing. And sometimes the best harvest never makes it to the kitchen. Gaines said her favorite garden crop is ‘Sun Gold’ cherry tomatoes, which she often eats straight from the vine. The lesson for Colorado gardeners is simple: Check the garden regularly, harvest when vegetables are ready and enjoy the results while they are at their freshest.

Perfect timing
TANYA BOND’S EXPERIENCE IN MANY ROLES HAS READIED HER TO TAKE OVER AS DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS AND ACTIVITIES IN CHERRY CREEK SCHOOLS
T
anya Bond believes in proper timing. It has been the underlying theme of her journey through education as a coach, athletic director, assistant principal and more during a lengthy career in the Cherry Creek School District. That path has led her — at the proper time — to her ultimate role, as the new director of athletics and activities for BY COURTNEY OAKES Sports Editor the district. Bond takes over the job from Larry Bull, who retired at the end of the last school year after holding the position since 2010. “I’ve always known I wanted to be a coach and a teacher, but my whole career, I’ve never just said ‘I want to do this thing’ in particular,” VIEW FROM THE TOP: New Bond told the Sentinel just ahead of the start of Cherry Creek School District the 2026-27 school year in the district. athletic director Tanya Bond “I’ve never really had this major drive for cerposes at Stutler Bowl Aug. 11, tain things, it just seems to be timing as to when just prior to the start of the 2026-27 school year in the dis- they became available.” trict. Photo staff of Hall of Famer Patty Childress at nearby by Courtney Oakes/ Aurora Grandview. When she made the jump — coinciSentinel dentally being hired by Bull, who was then an administrator at Eaglecrest — it began a two-decade run in which she helped Eaglecrest become one of Colorado’s elite programs. In her time on the bench, Bond led the Raptors to a perfect 31-0 season that netted a Class 5A state championship in 2006, a feat that made her group
the first team to be inducted into the school’s Athletics and Activities Hall of Fame in 2024. The timing was then right for her to join the administrative team when former principal Gwen Hansen-Vigil opened a co-athletic director position alongside Vince Orlando and filled it with Bond. She divided responsibilities for the school’s complement of sports with Orlando and also got experience working with other athletic directors as well as administrative dealings with the Colorado High School Activities Association. Bond also worked as an assistant principal, giving her yet another perspective. All of those things combine to give her the ability to see the bigger picture of athletics and activities — as well as its smaller nuances that might escape those without similar experience — and she believes it will pay off. “I’ve been fortunate to deal with pretty much all aspects of school, so I can use those experiences and hopefully be able to support all entities,” said Bond, adding she wants to make sure that non-athletic activities get due attention. Making the new role extra special is the chance to succeed Bull, who has been a major driving force of change and progress in the district. “I’m not trying to fill Larry’s shoes — I could never — but he was my original AD and mentor, so being able to follow him into this job is very special and meaningful to me,” Bond said. To do the job properly, Bond had to take off the red, black and white-tinted lens she viewed things through while at Eaglecrest.
Eaglecrest has been Bond’s identity — she coached and served as an administrator there, her husband is currently the boys volleyball coach and both of her sons (Aiden and 2026 graduate Ashton) both graduated from there — but her new role will change how she views everything. “Eaglecrest will forever and always be a special, special place for me and my family,” Bond said. “I just feel like right now, the timing is perfect. I definitely feel very ready and my intrinsic feelings on the inside already is supporting all Cherry Creek School District kids.” Bond feels she has people in place that will help ease the bumps of transition. All high schools at the district have returning athletic directors in Steve Carpenter (Cherokee Trail), Jason Wilkins (Cherry Creek), Orlando (Eaglecrest), Wes Smock (Grandview), Evan Henderson (Overland) and David Benedict (Smoky Hill) to help keep continuity. Bond also lauded the existing support team of assistant director Greg Critchett, administrative assistant Kristi Hayen, plus facility rental specialists Lori LaChapelle and Jenn Townsend as an incredible assembly of knowledge and experience that she will rely on heavily. That group will be especially important as the district undergoes massive construction at multiple sites — including a huge project reshaping the campus at Cherry Creek High School — made possible by a $950,000,000 bond approved by voters in 2024 Among the athletic parts of the construction is a brand new swimming pool on the campus of Overland High School and a new track at Eaglecrest.

BOYS WRESTLING
Cherokee Trail’s Mathews reps USA on world stage Cooper Mathews loves wrestling, but he is ready for a break. The Cherokee Trail High School senior-to-be has been on the mat endlessly for months, as his season didn’t end when he won his second career Class 5A boys wrestling state championship in February at Ball Arena. Mathews traded the Cougars singlet in for one representing the United States in the past few months, culminating with an appearance for his country at the U17 world championships in Baku, Azerbaijan. “It was a super awesome long journey that started right after state,” Mathews said. “Usually I take a little bit of time off after state, but not this time.” Indeed, Mathews — who has made a 5A state championship match in all three of his varsity prep seasons, which included a 13-4 win over Grandview’s Kyle Menuez in the 132 pound final Feb. 21 — kept on going. He departed for Panama City, Panama, in early April and won U17 Pan Am gold in both Greco and freestyle disciplines, then captured a Greco title at the U.S. Open in Las Vegas to secure his spot on the American team in the 60 kg weight class. His preparation was thrown off by injury, as he said he was in a cast for 5 1/2 weeks and also suffered a severe sprain to an ankle that definitely had an affect on his performance. The U17 world championships — contested at the National Gymnastics Arena in Baku — featured qualifiers from many countries. Mathews first faced a wrestler from Armenia and got behind early, but rallied for a 12-4 victory, which sent him forward in the bracket into a matchup against a wrestling from Japan. This time, Mathews was unable to adjust to his opponent’s strengths and ended up suffering a loss that derailed his quest for gold. The tournament, however, featured repechage, which means the wrestlers who lose can be brought back into the bracket to wrestle for the bronze medal if the opponent who defeated them moves into the final. Mathews would have had a shot at the bronze if he’d “Politics aside, they were really nice made it through the second round, as to me,” he said. “Even though we are at the top seed from Azerbaijan continwar with them, we traded clothes and ued all the way on to final. will try to add to his record with a third. He has racked up 145 wins in three seasons and will take aim at the Colorado record for wins, which is currently 189 (held by Glenwood Springs’ Myles Wilson and Air Academy’s David Burchett Jr.). On top of that, his younger brother, Crosby will be a freshman and they will get to share a season together, like Cooper did with his older brother. “I’m just trying to take some time off and get healed up right now, but I’m excited for senior year,” he said. FALL SPORTS
New prep sports season underway with practice The 2026 fall prep sports season is fully underway after the Colorado High School Activities Association permitted the start of practice and tryouts in the full slate of sports Aug. 10. Football (non-contact until Aug. 12) and boys golf were able to get started with practices and workouts Aug. 3 , while the other fall prep sports (girls volleyball, boys soccer, softball, cross country, girls flag football, boys tennis, field hockey and
gymnastics began Aug. 10. Competition can begin on Aug. 13 for softball and boys tennis, Aug. 15 for girls flag football and Aug. 20 for football (Zero Week), girls volleyball, boys soccer, cross country, field hockey and gymnastics. Three Aurora area teams claimed Class 5A state championships last fall and will look to defend their titles, which came from Regis Jesuit in both boys tennis and boys soccer along with Cherokee Trail in boys golf. Wolves finish second in season-opening Pred Cup The opening event of the 2026 fall prep sports season for Aurora area teams took place at Saddle Rock Golf Course Aug. 6 with the Predators Cup competition that involved three local teams plus one another. The lone non-area competitor — Castle View — ended up top of the
tournament with a seven-stroke victory over Grandview, which edged Cherokee Trail by a stroke for second place. Eaglecrest finished in fourth place. The Wolves had the top area individual finisher as well in Sam Silver, who shot a 2-under-par 70 to finish two strokes off the pace of medalist Kai Jorde of Castle View. Silver was joined in the top 10 by teammates Jordan Mehleck (sixth with at 73) plus Dominik Fedotov and Brady Mong, who tied for ninth place with 77s. The Cougars —reloading after graduation from last season’s Class 5A state championship-winning team — were paced by Jeffrey Chen’s 71, which put him fourth, while Jack Brenning shot 72 to finish fifth and Anthony Garreffa tied for seventh with his 75. The Raptors’ top performer was Tanner Steadman, who shot 85 to finish 16th. Eaglecrest and Grandview will play in the Sun Devil Invitational Aug. 13 at Murphy Creek G.C. and then the next day (along with Cherokee Trail) will take part in the Centennial League opener at Meadow Hills G.C.

ICE body cam mandate doesn’t ensure legal policing without public access to video
T
here is no more powerful tool than transparency to ensure that any government agency upholds the law. And, likewise, nothing undermines the credibility of the government — especially law enforcement, — or breeds distrust and allows for evading justice like purposely concealing information from the public. It was welcome and overdue news this week that immigration police will all be issued body cameras by September. As is too often the case the news was tempered by details making clear the Trump administration is unable to handle the project responsibly. It’s an immutable law of society that Donald Trump and his administration either cannot fathom or just purposely disregard, to its own ruination. For months, endless evidence has drawn a cloud over deceitful actions by ICE agents as they have fumbled through the Trump administration’s ill-conceived and too often illegal cavalcade of chaos in arresting, abusing and even murdering citizens, non-citizens, legal residents, non-legal residents and others. During mass deportation sweeps like Operation Metro Surge in Minneapolis, witnesses revealed a plethora of instances of ICE and Border Control agents using abusive and aggressive tactics. During one botched operation, agents detained a 5-year-old child that had been used to track down a parent. Agents have repeatedly used dubious and sometimes provably false sworn affidavits to make arrests, imploding endless cases in the courts. The deaths of U.S. citizens Renée Good and Alex Pretti earlier this year, amid the Minnesota mayhem caused by fumbled immigration raids, marked a turning point in the Trump administration’s incompetence, callousness and disregard for the Constitution and adherence to the rule of law. The ghastly deaths were flashbacks to the dark and deadly Kent State debacle in 1970. The Trump fatal malfeasance, however, is far worse because similar crimes committed by the agents carrying out the administration’s orders have been spread across the nation. The so-called “Metro Surge” included the arrests of protected crime victims and suspects and sometimes provably false-sworn statements and affidavits used by agents and Trump government officials. Rather than back down from using clearly unconstitutional, illegal schemes in the immigration round-ups, and enlisting and employing unqualified, untrained and incompetent agents, the Trump administration has accelerated the scope and breadth of its chaos. The July shooting of a 25-year-old motorist in Maine by an ICE officer with a history of violent behavior was preceded just days earlier by another ICE officer who shot and killed a Houston homebuilder driving to work. Neither shooting was recorded with body cameras. It’s welcome news this week that the Trump administration announced that all ICE and immigration police agents will wear body cameras on duty, reportedly by the end of the month. But as so often the case with the Trump administration, the news was tempered by what appear to be misstatements or grim caveats to the long-overdue change. Earlier in the week, the Associated Press reported that Trump Homeland Security officials said it would only release body cam video that it deemed “in the best interest of the agency.” Acting ICE Director David J. Venturella walked back the statement, saying that the agencies using the cameras would wield video with “restrictions” intended to protect investigations and privacy. He said ICE has been “committed to transparency and accountability” and will continue to be. Without question, no one in the Trump administration, and especially those linked to ICE and border control, have demonstrated even trifling amounts of transparency, honesty or integrity in how it has carried out its chaotic policy of mass deportation. Aurora residents can attest through experience how dangerous and ineffective it is for police to handle investigations into its own force and be trusted to dispense an accurate and impartial account of officer-involved death and injury incidents. Congress needs to act here, and now, making clear that withholding immigration-officer body-cam video is illegal and antithetical to open and transparent government. The law must make clear that in the rare case portions of video released to the public could jeopardize fair trial rights, that determination must be made by a reputable court, and a delay could last only until the trial is resolved. Venturella, and the rest of the Trump administration, must realize that, ultimately, it is in their own “best interest” to comply with U.S. law, the Constitution and measures that ensure government transparency and accountability. There is no doubt it’s in the best law of U.S. citizens and residents, and Congress must do what it takes to ensure it happens.

Phil Weiser’s ‘blueprint’ for Colorado is a mass of contradictions
“D
emocrats lay out plan to win supermajority in Colorado Legislature,” reads a recent headline from the left-leaning Colorado Newsline. So how might Governor Phil Weiser interact with the legislature, whether or not Democrats reach their goals for legislative seats? For that we can turn to his 109-page “blueprint” Unsurprisingly, Weiser wants to be all things to all people. He talks about freedom, prosperity, and a business-friendly environment out of one side of his mouth while promoting tax and spending hikes and tighter regulations out of the other. Unaffordable housing exacerbates various other problems, starting, of course, with homelessness. It makes child care less available and more expensive, because people who otherwise would open in-home care centers are financially discouraged from doing so. Expensive housing makes it harder for businesses to attract employees and harder for households to make ends meet. Last year, the Common Sense Institute found a substantial “housing unit deficit.” The governor’s office found the same problem. The good news is that Weiser takes this problem seriously. And some of his proposals actually would help, starting with his push to streamline rules and speed up permitting. Yes, housing costs rise with supply expenses and labor shortages. The core problem, though, is that local governments severely restrict the building and use of housing. It’s unclear to what extent Weiser would take on this problem; he has strongly signaled he would tend to defer to local control. Weiser says, “I will work collaboratively with local governments, and push for legislation to offer incentives and partnerships to towns, cities, and counties to modernize land use, zoning, building requirements, and processes to support affordable housing development efforts.” This strikes me as all carrot, no stick. Beyond that, Weiser seems easily distracted by marginal “solutions” that come at the expense of others’ liberties involving subsidies and controls on those who rent housing. Weiser says he wants to “reinvigorate Colorado’s economy” based on “dynamism and growth.” And, again, he has some good ideas. He channels his inner Elon Musk (with the Department of Government Efficiency) when he says, “I will direct the Cabinet and each state agency to undertake a comprehensive review of all regulations, based on costs and benefits, removing unnecessary or outdated burdens that serve no safety value.” That’s all music to a libertarian’s ears! But while Weiser would seek to reduce burdens on businesses with one hand he’d impose more with the other, starting with undue union power. “I believe we’ve got to change the Labor Peace Act,” the Sun quotes him. Voluntarily organized unions are an important aspect of a market economy. But Weiser favors changes that would allow
unions to further force compliance from unwilling employees and employers. What Weiser in the blueprint calls the union “right to organize and bargain” is largely a “right” to impose outcomes through state coercion. Generally, what Colorado businesses need is for government to back off and leave them alone, except to enforce contracts and protect people’s (actual) rights. Weiser clearly sees his role instead as Meddler in Chief. There’s a lot of “I will” in his blueprint (“I will partner with business”) but not much “I will not,” which is what we really need. “TABOR imposes constraints” on “state leaders” who believe they can spend your money better than you can, Weiser laments. Hold on to your wallets. Overall I like Weiser’s emphasis on apprenticeships and skilled trades, although I would point out that the core problem is government screwing up college incentives. This is an area of government holding itself out as the solution to the problems it created. One word that does not appear in the education section of Weiser’s blueprint is “choice.” Indeed, Weiser promises to bend over backwards to reward the teachers’ unions, expand unaccountable tax funding of schools, and block choice including “voucher programs.” Channeling FDR, Weiser wants to create a “ColoradoCorps” to employ those left unprepared for real life by Colorado’s public schools (my characterization, obviously). Because the 109-page blueprint is not sufficient space for Weiser to lay out his grand plans, he links to his “Healthy Colorado Plan,” which discusses his idea for “Primary Care for All.” This is yet another substantial step toward socialized medicine. To reiterate, in my view the problems with health care and insurance arise from the fact that they already have been substantially socialized, not that they haven’t been socialized enough. Of course Weiser promises to sign “any” gun bill sent to him by our rights restricting legislature. Okay, he says such legislation must be “responsible,” but I doubt there’s any possible anti-gun bill the legislature could cook up that Weiser would not enthusiastically support. In the energy section, the term that most struck me by its emphasis is “must.” Coloradans “must” do this and “must” do that. I too am worried about carbon emissions, and I look forward to the embrace of solar, geothermal, and nuclear power. But I’d rather approach the problem by building in the full costs of carbon, not through a more command-and-control style that Weiser seems to prefer. Republican primary voters have greased Weiser’s path to the governor’s mansion. And Democrats might also win their supermajority. The rest of us can only hope that Weiser fulfills his promise to listen to all Coloradans and not just his big-government sycophants.
