HOW TO HELP YOUR PARENTS MOVE WITHOUT TAKING OVER

How to Help Your Parents Move Without “Their Move. Their Choices. Taking Over Your Support.”

When an aging parent decides it is time to move, adult children often jump into action. They want to help, protect their parents from stress, and make sure nothing gets overlooked. Those instincts come from a good place—but sometimes, in the rush to help, parents can feel as though decisions about their own lives are being made for them. A successful move works best when everyone remembers one important thing: helping is not the same as taking over. Start the conversation early, before there is a crisis. Give parents the opportunity to share what they want for their next chapter. Adult children can listen, ask questions, explore options, and help make plans. Starting early gives everyone time to understand expectations and make decisions together. Parents should also be clear about where they want help—and where they do not. They may appreciate assistance researching senior living communities, arranging movers, or handling paperwork. But they may want to decide which furniture, photographs, and treasured possessions come with them. Discussing these boundaries ahead of time can prevent misunderstandings. For adult children, patience can make all the difference. A home filled

66 NORTHERN COLORADO – FALL 2026-2027

with decades of belongings may look overwhelming, but everything does not need to be sorted in one weekend. What may seem like “just stuff” to one person can represent a lifetime of memories to another. Remember, parents and children may have different priorities. Children may focus on safety, while parents may be thinking about independence, friendships, and maintaining control. Neither perspective is wrong. The goal is finding a balance. When families communicate openly, a move can become a shared effort rather than a source of tension. Parents remain in control of important decisions while adult children provide practical support and reassurance. Sometimes, an experienced outside professional can help. A neutral third party can coordinate logistics, allowing family members to spend less time managing boxes and deadlines—and more time supporting one another. Kid Gloves specializes in helping seniors and their families with moving, downsizing, and home cleanouts, providing personalized support every step of the way.~ Editor’s Note: This article was submitted by Donna Hunsinger, Kidglovesmovers@ gmail.com, 970-449-2309. SENIOR HOUSING

First you should familiarize yourself with the many options available and determine which one is best for your needs. You will find definitions of each type of housing at the beginning of the housing section. Then turn to our easy to read comparison grids. The grids are divided into 4 categories, depending on the type of community: New Affordable/ Subsidized, Independent Living and Retirement, Assisted Living, and Skilled Nursing. The buildings are listed by city or county so you can zero in on the specific areas you are looking for.

A•A

What A Good Day Looks Like At Elderhaus Adult Day Program, a good day looks like tending tomatoes in the raised garden beds, kneading dough alongside the kitchen crew, or dancing to their favorite song during music hour. For more than four decades, Elderhaus has given adults living with dementia and other disabilities in Northern Colorado somewhere to belong; not just be cared for, but genuinely contribute. As the region’s only nonprofit adult day program dedicated to dementia care and adults with disabilities, Elderhaus welcomes participants into a warm, supervised setting built on four pillars: social connection, cognitive stimulation, safe physical activity, and nutritious meals made

fresh, in-house, every day. Here, a participant who spent a lifetime fixing things finds his way back to the workbench in our woodworking shop. One who loved the outdoors waters the garden. Purpose doesn’t disappear with a diagnosis, it just needs the setting to show up. Since 1980, that place has been Elderhaus — including, since 2009, as the first day program approved by the Cheyenne VA to serve veterans. And for family caregivers, it means real rest, knowing their loved one is thriving. Come see for yourself what a good day looks like. ~ Editor’s Note: This article was submitted by Jesseca Tighe, ExecutiveDirector@ elderhaus.org. See ad above. RESOURCES FOR AGING WELL

SeniorsBlueBook.com C•C

It is where memories were made, families were raised, and life’s milestones were celebrated.

It is no surprise that most seniors hope to remain in their own homes as they age. This desire, known as “aging in place,” allows older adults to maintain their independence, comfort, and connection to the community they know and love. While aging in place offers many benefits, it can also present challenges. Everyday tasks such as housekeeping, meal preparation, transportation, medication reminders, or personal care may become more difficult over time. For some seniors, accepting help can feel uncomfortable because they fear it means losing independence. In reality, accepting support often helps preserve independence longer. A little assistance with daily activities can help older adults remain safe at home, reduce the risk of accidents, and avoid unnecessary hospitalizations. Support services are designed to complement a senior’s abilities, not replace them. The goal is to help individuals continue enjoying the routines, hobbies, and activities that bring meaning to their lives. Family members often notice changes before a senior does. Missed appointments, difficulty managing household chores, increased forgetfulness, or concerns about driving may indicate that additional support would be ben-

eficial. Rather than waiting for a crisis, families can explore options early and introduce assistance gradually, making the transition more comfortable for everyone involved. Professional caregivers provide more than practical help. They also offer companionship and social engagement. Loneliness and isolation can significantly impact physical and emotional health. Regular visits from a trusted caregiver can provide meaningful interaction, encouragement, and peace of mind for seniors and their families. Accepting help is not a sign of weakness. Throughout life, people rely on others during different seasons and circumstances. Aging is no different. Allowing family, friends, or professional caregivers to assist with certain tasks can free up energy for the activities that matter most.

Aging in Place: The Strength in Accepting Help For many older adults, home is much more than a place to live. Right at Home

The goal of aging in place is not simply remaining at home—it is living well right at home. With the right support system, older adults can maintain their dignity, independence, and quality of life while continuing to enjoy the comfort and familiarity of the place they cherish most.~ Editor’s Note: This article was submitted by Samantha Salazar, Right at Home, SSalazar@ncoloradorah.com. partners with solutions for real-life challenges on the dementia journey. Dementia Together walks alongside care partners through support groups, Doing Dementia Together™ classes, and workshops that help families discover practical strategies and tangible help. One care partner said it best: “The DT support group acknowledges our challenges and grief, but you don’t let us stay stuck there. DT support groups and workshops are solutions-focused. They aren’t just meetings; they’re lifelines

of grace and hope.” When care partners are trying to bring in caregiving help, they may say, “My loved one won’t allow anyone in our home.” This is one of the real-life situations we work through with families. The key is finding an explanation that makes sense to the person living with dementia and helps it feel okay to welcome someone new. We help families discover individualized responses that promote the greatest sense of well-being

Not All Home Care Agencies When families begin exploring home Are The Same care for a loved one, the options can feel overwhelming. One of the most important—but often overlooked— distinctions is whether a provider is licensed to deliver higherlevel care under nurse supervision.

In Colorado, not all home care is the same. Many agencies provide non-medical support such as companionship, meal preparation, and help with daily activities. While these services are incredibly valuable, they may not be enough as a loved one’s needs become more complex. A licensed home care agency with a higher level of state licensure can offer an added layer of support through nurse oversight and care coordination. This can include services like medication management, monitoring chronic conditions, oxygen support, and more hands-on clinical guidance—all delivered in the comfort of home. Why does this matter? Because needs change. A client who starts with simple companionship may eventually require more advanced support. Without access to licensed nursing services, families often face a disruptive transition— either bringing in multiple providers or moving their loved one out of the home altogether. There are also important financial and access advantages. For example,

families utilizing veterans’ benefits may find the process more seamless when working with a licensed provider. Required reassessments—often needed every 60 days to maintain eligibility—can be completed efficiently under nurse supervision, helping ensure there are no gaps or delays in care. Working with a licensed provider, such as Home Instead, allows care to evolve seamlessly. Care plans can be adjusted in real time, caregivers are supported by clinical professionals, and families have a trusted partner guiding decisions every step of the way. There is also an added layer of accountability. Licensed agencies must meet state regulations, maintain training standards, and ensure appropriate supervision—providing peace of mind that care is not only compassionate, but also safe and compliant. Choosing home care is not just about today’s needs—it’s about planning for what comes next. Partnering with a licensed agency helps families stay ahead of changes, avoid unnecessary disruptions, and keep their loved ones where they most want to be: at home. ~ Editor’s Note: This article was submitted by Ricky Anderson with Home Instead and he can be reached at 970-900-6773. time when we are no longer able to make important financial or medical decisions. When that happens, a court may appoint a guardian, a conservator, or both to act on behalf of an individual. Generally, this happens because the court has determined the individual can no longer manage certain financial and medical responsibilities safely or effectively. Colorado separates guardianship, appointing someone to make health and welfare decisions, and conservatorship, appointing someone to manage finances and assets. Separating these roles allows the court to tailor the level of assistance to an individual’s needs. For example, someone may still be capable of making personal and medical decisions but need help managing finances. In other cases, the opposite may be true. When both roles are necessary, the court may appoint the same person or two different individuals who work together to serve the protected person’s best interests. A conservator oversees financial responsibilities such as paying bills, managing bank accounts, protecting assets, and ensuring funds are used appropriately for housing, medical needs, and everyday expenses. A guardian is responsible for decisions involving medical care, living arrange-

ments, personal support, and overall well-being. While the court strives to appoint someone who will act in your best interests, leaving these important decisions entirely up to the court may not reflect your personal wishes. That’s why planning ahead is so important. A financial power of attorney allows you to nominate a conservator and recommend which financial decisions they are allowed to make for you. As your situation and needs change this document may need updating to fit your circumstances.

A medical power of attorney names someone to act as guardian, making health and welfare decisions when you are unable. Choosing the right person to make financial and medical decisions on your behalf is one of the most important parts of an estate plan. By putting comprehensive powers of attorney in place today, you can help ensure that someone you know and trust is prepared to care for you and your wishes if the need ever arises, providing both you and your loved ones with greater peace of mind. ~ Editor’s Note: This article was submitted by Andrew P. Preparing for Your Tomorrows Preparing for your tomorrows with Medicare with Medicare begins with understanding your choices today.

Medicare plans, benefits, costs, prescription drug coverage, provider networks, and individual healthcare needs change from year to year. Taking time to review your coverage annually, often helps you determine whether your current plan continues to meet your medical, prescription, financial, and lifestyle needs. A licensed Medicare agent/broker can help you understand Medicare options available in your area, compare plan benefits and costs, review prescription drug coverage, and identify important changes that may affect you in the coming year. Planning

46 NORTHERN COLORADO – FALL 2026-2027

ahead may also help reduce surprises and give you greater confidence when making healthcare decisions. Whether you are approaching Medicare for the first time or have been enrolled for years, staying informed is an important part of preparing for the future. Your healthcare needs are personal, and your Medicare coverage should reflect those needs. Prepare today, understand your options, and move toward tomorrow with confidence and peace of mind.~ Editor’s Note: This article was submitted by Diane Brush-Goldsberry diane@ DCTInsurance.com. Five Common Medicare Mistakes 1. Misunderstanding enrollment periods. Don’t sign up too late, but don’t sign up too early. Contrary to what you have heard, you may be able to keep your current insurance as you turn 65 and then start your Medicare later without penalty. On the other hand, you don’t want to incorrectly assume that is true, and fail to sign up in time and incur penalties. 2. Not understanding the difference between Medicare Advantage and Medigap. Comparing Medicare Advantage plans to Medigap is like comparing apples to Volkswagons and yet they are often confused. Understanding the difference between the two is critical to making wise decisions concerning your coverage. 3. Failing to understand what

guarantee issue means. There is a six month window in your life during which you have guarantee issue rights. If you don’t understand what that means you could make critical mistakes as you start Medicare. 4. Failing to enroll in an Rx plan Just because you aren’t taking any prescription medications currently doesn’t mean it isn’t a good idea to enroll in a prescription drug plan. 5. Failing to evaluate your coverage annually. Plans change. Prices rise. Your health needs change. Checking your plans annually just makes good sense. Your local SHIP office will be glad to help. ~ Editor’s Note: This article was submitted by Alan Heileman at Aspen Club 970495-8562. See ad above. Indicates website link on seniorsbluebook.com

Retirement Can Wait. Many Americans plan to work longer Medicare May Not. and delay Social Security retirement benefits until age 67 or beyond.

But delaying retirement does not automatically mean you should delay Medicare. For most people, Medicare eligibility begins at age 65, and missing the proper enrollment window can lead to costly late enrollment penalties and gaps in coverage. If you are not already receiving Social Security benefits when you turn 65, you may need to actively enroll in Medicare. Some people can safely delay Part B if they have qualifying employer group health coverage through current employment, but not all coverage qualifies. COBRA, retiree

coverage, Marketplace plans, and other situations can follow different rules. Before your 65th birthday, review your health coverage, employment status, and Medicare enrollment timeline. Do not assume that waiting until your Social Security retirement age means you can wait for Medicare too. A simple review ahead of time can help you understand your options, protect your coverage, and avoid unnecessary penalties later for many years. ~ Editor’s Note: This article was submitted by Valeria Ortiz, VORTIZ Insurance LLC, 970-347-0394. Finding Your Way Back to How inpatient rehabilitation Everyday Life supports recovery through goals built around you.

Some of the most meaningful parts of life happen in ordinary moments: morning coffee, a familiar chair, time around the table with family. When illness or injury makes those moments harder to enjoy, the impact reaches beyond physical ability. It can change how comfortable you feel at home and how easily you take part in your day. Whether you manage daily routines yourself or share them with someone who helps, recovery is personal. Inpatient rehabilitation provides physician supervision and coordinated care designed to help individuals recover from illness, injury, or other conditions that affect daily function. Therapy is tailored to each patient’s needs, abilities, and tolerance, with goals that guide their progress. Treatment may include physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech-language pathology. People may be considered following a hospital stay or while living in the community; an assessment helps determine whether inpatient rehabilitation is appropriate. Recovery goals should reflect the life a person wants to return to.

58 NORTHERN COLORADO – FALL 2026-2027

Walking farther matters, but so does reaching the bathroom safely at night. Improving hand coordination can mean managing buttons or preparing a meal. Progress becomes meaningful when it connects to something familiar. For someone who already receives assistance, a goal might be helping more with dressing, moving with less effort, or participating more comfortably in family activities. Progress looks different for everyone. Families bring valuable information to these conversations. Sharing details about the home’s layout, usual routines, and available support helps the care team understand what everyday life requires. Patients should speak up about what matters most to them; even when a goal seems small. For Northern Colorado residents exploring rehabilitation options, start with a conversation about what has changed and what you hope to do more easily. Those details help guide decisions about care and keep recovery focused on the person receiving it. ~ Editor’s Note: This article was submitted by Claire Dinger of Pam Rehab of Greeley, 970-425-6770, Cdinger@ pamrehab.com. RESPITE CARE

Rehabilitation Hospitals provide intensive rehab to patients who are generally medically stable but need help to recover from injury, providing a high level of professional therapies such as physical, occupational and speech therapies. They must offer a minimum number of physician visits, increased daily rehab hours (3 hours/day, 5 days/week of PT, OT, and/ or Speech), and interdisciplinary services including increased RN oversight and nursing hours per day.

Respite is a period of rest or relief for those who give constant care to an ill person. Many skilled nursing and assisted living facilities offer this service. Refer to our housing grids on pages 99, 114, and 120 for a complete list.

Is It Time for In-Home Care? 6 Signs Knowing when a loved one could benefit from in-home care isn’t always easy. Changes can happen gradually, and families often find themselves wondering: Is it time for a little extra support? 1. Household tasks are becoming overwhelming You may notice the dishes piling up, laundry going undone, meals becoming less nutritious, or the home becoming harder to maintain. 2. Personal care is becoming more difficult Changes in grooming, dressing, bathing, or maintaining personal hygiene can be an important signal. 3. They’re spending more time alone Social isolation can be easy to overlook. Maybe your loved one has stopped attending activities, isn’t seeing friends as often. 78 NORTHERN COLORADO – FALL 2026-2027

4. Meals or medications are being skipped Look in the refrigerator. Is it stocked with fresh food? Are medications being taken at the wrong time or not at all? 5. They’re having difficulty getting around If your loved one is becoming less comfortable driving, navigating errands, or getting to appointments. 6. You notice changes in their routines or appearance Sometimes the signs are subtle: unopened mail, missed appointments, a normally tidy home becoming cluttered. The goal isn’t to take away independence, it’s to help preserve it before it becomes a crisis. ~ Editor’s Note: This article was submitted by Kristi Remick, Seniors Helping Seniors, kristi@seniorshelpingseniors.info. How To Get Financial Support To Pay For Non-Skilled There are several ways to find support to pay for non-skilled In In-Home Services Home care. The first option is to evaluate if your loved one is eligible for The Guide Program.

This is a Medicare Part A benefit that offers respite reimbursement to its participants if they meet certain criteria. The criteria includes that they must have a diagnosis from a physician of Dementia/Alzheimers, they must require some assistance with personal care, and need consistent monitoring to be safe related to the severity of their cognitive status. The participant must have their care provided by a non-paid caregiver that can be a family member or friend and they must live in a home or apartment to be eligible, and can not reside in an Assisted Living or Skilled Nursing Facility. If approved by the Guide program, the participant is eligible for $2,625 annually in Colorado to use in 4 hour increments to provide respite care to the primary caregiver. If you have questions regarding if your loved one is eligible or to start the application process, please contact ComForCare Home Care at 970-460-9947. Another option to help with finan-

cial support is through VA Benefits. If your loved one has served in the Military services and is a veteran from any branch they may be eligible for paid non-skilled and skilled in home care. The first step is to become enrolled with a VA Healthcare practitioner in your area. You will need to complete a VA form called a 10-10 EZ (application for healthcare benefits). You will need to have an assessment completed by a clinician to evaluate if you are eligible for Homemaker Assistance, Home Health Aide for personal care, respite care to relieve a primary caregiver or Skilled Nursing. The veteran will need to show they require assistance with daily activities to be eligible. Involving a VA social worker will help to navigate the care needs and get help quicker. If you need assistance quickly call The Caregiver Support Line at 1-855-260-3274. ComForCare supports many veterans with In-home non-skilled and skilled care. Call us today for assistance and to start care! ~ Editor’s Note: This article was submitted Laura Wining, MSN, RN Owner/Director of Clinical Services for ComForCare Home Care. See ad on page 3.

The Role of Home Health Care Home health care in Colorado has become an essential component of the state’s healthcare system, offering residents the ability to receive high-quality medical support in the comfort of their homes. Colorado’s diverse geography— spanning dense cities, rural plains, and high-altitude mountain communities— makes accessible in-home services especially important for older adults, people recovering from surgery, and individuals managing chronic illnesses. Home health typically includes skilled nursing, physical and occupational therapy, speech therapy, medical social work, and home health aide support. These services are prescribed by a physician and tailored to 86 NORTHERN COLORADO – FALL 2026-2027

each patient’s specific medical needs and goals, reducing hospital readmissions, while promoting faster recovery and greater independence. Home health care also places emphasis on patient-centered care and interdisciplinary collaboration. Home health teams work closely with families, patients, and caregivers to ensure education, safety planning, and effective disease management. With an aging population and growing demand for cost-effective care, home health remains a crucial resource, helping Coloradans maintain health, stability, and quality of life.~ Editor’s Note: This article submitted by Wyndam Reeve, PhD, Executive Director of CO & UT Operations at Amazing Care Home Health Services, LLC. Understanding Hospice Care: What When facing a serious or life-limiting You Should Know illness, families often have questions about hospice and how to choose a provider. Hospice focuses on comfort and quality of life, providing physical, emotional and spiritual support for patients and families. If you have Medicare Part A, the Medicare hospice benefit is available to you if you meet Medicare’s eligibility requirements. The benefit covers a comprehensive range of hospice services, including nursing care, medications, medical equipment, social work, spiritual support and grief counseling. Quality matters, too. Pathways is currently the only hospice provider

based in Larimer and Weld counties with a 4-star Medicare hospice rating. The rating is based on feedback from family caregivers about their experience with the care provided. THE GALLERY AT FORT COLLINS

Starting the Conversation About Senior Living Talking with a parent or loved one about senior living can be a difficult conversation to begin. The discussion may touch on a variety of topics, such as future needs, lifestyle, finances, or independence. Starting the conversation early can give everyone more time to understand their options and work together to make thoughtful decisions. We often have these conversations after a fall, hospitalization, or another significant change occurs. When possible, starting before an immediate need arises allows families more time to consider the possibilities without needing to make a quick decision. Everyday changes can provide a natural opportunity to begin. Home maintenance may become more difficult, meals may have become simpler, or a person may be less socially engaged than they once were. Start by asking questions that help you understand your loved one’s perspective. Questions like, “How are you feeling about keeping up with the house?” or “Have you thought about what you would want if everyday tasks became more difficult?” can create space for an open discussion. Listen carefully to the answers. Some older adults may be concerned about

leaving a longtime home. Others may have questions about cost, available support, or what daily life in a senior living community is actually like. Understanding those priorities can help families identify which options are worth exploring. If senior living becomes part of the discussion, research and visit communities together. Ask about living arrangements, levels of care, dining, transportation, activities, healthcare access, costs, and how additional support is provided if needs change. A location visit can provide information that is difficult to find online. It also gives you a chance to observe daily life and talk to residents and team members. Choosing where and how to live is a significant decision. It may take several conversations before a family knows what the next step should be. Beginning early allows everyone time to gather information, consider alternatives, and revisit the discussion together. To schedule a tour of The Gallery at Fort Collins, call 970-722-8909. portant step toward getting stronger and safely returning home after an illness, surgery, injury, or hospitalization.

Knowing what to expect and preparing ahead of time can make the transition easier for both you and your family. Know what to expect. Skilled nursing facilities provide 24-hour nursing care along with rehabilitation services such as physical, occupational, and speech therapy. Before leaving the hospital, ask about your goals, expected length of stay, and the assistance you may need. Gather your important information. Make sure the facility has an updated medication list, information about allergies, insurance information, your primary care provider’s contact information, and emergency contacts. Bring copies of advance directives or healthcare power of attorney documents if you have them. Pack for comfort and therapy. Comfortable clothing and supportive, non-slip shoes are important. Label personal belongings when possible. You may also want to bring glasses,

hearing aids, a favorite blanket, family photos, or other small items that make the room feel more like home. Ask questions. Don’t be afraid to speak up. Ask about medications, therapy schedules, meals, visiting hours, transportation, and what needs to happen before you can safely return home. Find out who your family should contact if questions or concerns come up. Think about the road home. Discharge planning starts early. Talk with the care team about what you will need at home, including equipment, medications, follow-up appointments, and whether additional services may be needed. Most importantly, remember that you are not doing this alone. Your nurses, therapists, physicians, social workers, caregivers, and family are all part of your recovery team. A little preparation can help you feel more confident, comfortable, and ready to focus on getting stronger—one step at a time. ~

RESOURCES FOR AGING WELL

Choosing a placement advisor for someone you love matters. Knowing what draws an advisor to this work can help you find someone who does more than provide a list— someone who knows your family, cares and helps find the right place to call home. I became an advisor after helping my family search for a place for someone we loved. We faced unfamiliar choices, care levels, prices, amenities and more questions than answers. I learned how overwhelming it feels when the decision is personal and time matters. Placement services may be offered

at no cost to families, but the experience depends on who is helping you. Will they listen before recommending communities? Explain the differences? Arrange and attend tours? Stay involved? Do they know the local communities, or just a database? Ask about their story. Experience matters, but so does motivation. When someone understands what your family is facing, the search becomes more than a referral. It becomes personal guidance. Ask their why—and listen. ~ Editor’s Note: This article was submitted by Kim Kennedy, Founder of ClaraCare Senior Partners, 720-336-1510, kim@claracare.us. See ad below.

Why Local Matters When Choosing a Senior Placement Agency Finding the right senior living community for a parent, spouse, or loved one can feel overwhelming. Families are often making important decisions during a time of change—sometimes following a hospital stay, a health concern, or a sudden realization that additional support is needed. One option families may want to consider is working with a locally owned, independent senior placement agency. Unlike large national referral networks or franchise organizations, an independent local agency is rooted in the community it serves. Its advisors can offer firsthand knowledge of local senior living communities, assisted living residences, memory care programs, and other resources. Local Knowledge You Can Put to Work A senior living community may look impressive online or during a scheduled tour, but families often want to know what day-to-day life is really like. Local senior placement professionals may have personally visited and toured many of the communities they recommend. Over time, they can develop familiarity with differences in management, staffing, activities, dining, atmosphere, and the overall experience offered by individual communities. This “boots on the ground” knowledge can be especially valuable because every family has different priorities.

108 NORTHERN COLORADO – FALL 2026-2027

A Personal Advocate, Not Just a Referral Choosing senior living is about much more than matching a list of amenities to a list of needs. The right community should be a good fit for the individual person—including their personality, interests, routines, social preferences, care needs, and financial considerations. An independent local advisor can often provide a more personalized experience, including phone consultations, in-person meetings, assistance coordinating tours, and ongoing communication with family members. Rather than simply providing a list of communities, a local advisor can serve as a personal guide and liaison throughout the search. Whether the search involves independent living, assisted living, memory care, or another senior care option, a knowledgeable local advisor can help families understand their choices, ask the right questions, and explore communities that may be appropriate for their loved one’s individual needs. When it comes to choosing a home and care for someone you love, local knowledge and personal guidance can make the process easier to navigate. ~ Editor’s Note: This article was submitted by Patty brown at Elder Angels Senior Placement, Pbrown1@elderangelsco.com. Choosing the Right Senior Placement Agency When a loved one needs more support, families often face emotional and complex decisions about care, safety, and finances. Senior living placement agencies can ease this burden by guiding families through options such as independent living, assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing. Experience is essential. Advisors with years in the industry understand changing regulations, community standards, and care models, helping families find the best fit. A hands-on approach also matters—strong advisors assess needs, educate families, coordinate tours, and support decision-making every step of the way. Integrity should never be overlooked. While many communities offer referral 110 NORTHERN COLORADO – FALL 2026-2027

fees, ethical advisors prioritize the senior’s needs above compensation. Families should also ensure recommended communities are in good standing, with proper licensing and compliance. Professional credentials, such as a Certified Senior Advisor (CSA), can indicate additional expertise in senior care. In Colorado, the Family Choice Act ensures transparency in compensation and allows families to choose or change their advisor at any time. Ultimately, the right placement professional becomes a trusted guide during a deeply important life transition. ~ Editor’s Note: This article was submitted by Jessica Dunn, All About Seniors Senior Placement,JDunn@allaboutseniorsinc.net. RESOURCES FOR AGING WELL

One of the funniest commercials I’ve seen shows a shirtless, middle-aged man over his belly with a knife, following a surgeon’s instructions by phone: “Now make an inch incision left of your middle section.” He hesitates and says, “Shouldn’t you be doing this?” Sometimes you need help from someone with more knowledge and experience than you have. That’s why we have accountants, attorneys, doctors, dentists, caregivers, and teachers. When my first wife needed placement in a community for her

dementia, I tried finding one on my own. Bad idea. Each visit left me more confused. I didn’t know what to ask: Assisted Living vs. Memory Care, what the care levels cost, whether they had a Hoyer lift, one- or two-person assist. I was out of my league and needed someone who knew the communities and their reputations for care. That’s what Senior Placement Companies do — and it’s free. It’s time to say, “Shouldn’t you be doing this?”~ Editor’s Note: This article was submitted by Walt and Britt Roberson, Harmony Senior Referrals info@harmonyseniorreferrals.com. See ad below.

MEMORY CARE ASSISTED LIVING COMMUNITIES MEMORY CARE ASSISTED LIVING COMMUNITIES

Finding the Best Memory Care for a Loved One Choosing memory care is one of the hardest decisions a family can make. Research points to a few factors that matter most for wellbeing. Staff training and ratios. Studies link specialized dementia training and lower staff-to-resident ratios to fewer behavioral symptoms and better quality of life. Ask how often staff receive dementia-specific education. Person-centered care. Evidence shows individualized care plans— based on a resident’s history, preferences, and routines—reduce agitation and improve mood compared to standardized approaches. Structured, meaningful activities. Research supports consistent daily routines and engagement (music,

movement, sensory activities) for maintaining cognitive function and reducing anxiety. Safe, homelike design. Studies associate secure, non-institutional environments—natural light, clear signage, outdoor access—with reduced falls and wandering incidents. Family involvement policies. Facilities that welcome regular family visits and communication show better resident outcomes. Tour multiple communities, ask for outcome data, and trust your instincts. The right fit combines clinical quality with genuine warmth and connection. ~ Editor’s Note: This article was submitted by Amelia Schafer, High Plains Crossing. See ad above. SKILLED NURSING FACILITIES

What Comes Next? Understanding Your Options After a You weren’t expecting this. Hospital Stay Maybe it was a fall. Maybe it was a surgery that didn’t go as smoothly as planned. Maybe it was a health scare that came out of nowhere. Whatever brought you or your loved one to the hospital, you’re now sitting with a question you didn’t see coming: What happens when they leave?

If you’re hearing terms like “skilled nursing,” “rehab,” “transitional care,” and “long-term placement” for the first time—and they all sound the same—you’re not alone. The discharge process can feel rushed, and the jargon doesn’t help. So, let’s slow down and make sense of it together. Short-Term Rehab: A Pit Stop, Not a Destination If your loved one isn’t quite ready to go home safely, their care team may recommend short-term skilled nursing or rehabilitation. Take a breath—this is not “being put in a home.” This is a temporary stay with one clear goal: getting stronger. Short-term rehab means 24/7 nursing support, physical and occupational therapy, and a care plan built around returning to the community whether that’s back home, to assisted living, or to another level of support that fits. Most short-term stays last a few weeks, and the focus is on progress: walking further, managing stairs, dressing independently, getting back to daily life. 124 NORTHERN COLORADO – FALL 2026-2027

This is for someone who can get better and just needs time and professional support to do it safely. Long-Term Care: When the Need Is Ongoing Sometimes a hospital stay reveals what the family has been quietly noticing for a while: that the level of care someone needs has outgrown what can safely be provided at home. Long-term care is appropriate when a person’s needs are chronic, complex, or unlikely to improve significantly. That can be a hard thing to hear. But here’s the other side of it: the right long-term care community can bring real relief. It means your loved one has consistent medical oversight, daily structure, social connection, and a team whose entire job is their wellbeing. And it means you can go back to being a daughter, a son, a spouse—not a full-time caregiver running on fumes. The best long-term care communities work hard to feel like home, not an institution. Ask about their daily routines, activities, and how they honor residents’ individuality. Those details tell you a lot. ~ Editor’s Note: This article was submitted by Sarah Elliott, Senior Director of Strategic Engagement, Vivage Beecan. See ad on page 123.
