Advanced Parkinson’s Care: Practical Ways to Help Your Loved One
CARING FOR A LOVED ONE WITH ADVANCED PARKINSON’S DISEASE
As Parkinson’s disease (PD) progresses, care needs often become more complex. Advanced stages can bring greater changes in movement, thinking, communication, and daily function. For care partners, this phase can feel overwhelming, but with the right tools, resources, and support, it is possible to provide care with confidence while maintaining quality of life for both you and your loved one.
Below are practical tips to help navigate daily care, safety, communication, and long-term planning during advanced Parkinson’s.
CREATE A STEADY DAILY ROUTINE
A consistent daily routine can provide structure, reduce confusion, and create a sense of calm. Predictable schedules often help your loved one feel more comfortable and in control.
specialist about a referral to an occupational therapist (OT) experienced with Parkinson’s disease. You can also contact the Parkinson’s Foundation Helpline at 1-800-4PD-INFO (1-800473-4636) for help finding local resources.
MAKE THE HOME SAFER TO PREVENT FALLS
As PD progresses, mobility challenges and fall risk often increase. Simple home modifications can significantly improve safety and independence. Consider removing throw rugs and clutter, installing grab bars in bathrooms, adding non-slip mats, improving lighting, and ensuring walkways are clear. Easy access to seating for tasks like brushing teeth or shaving can also help.
Try to keep regular times for waking up, taking medications, eating meals, resting, and sleeping. Planning tools such as a dry-erase whiteboard, printed schedules, or phone reminders can be helpful. If assistance is needed with daily activities, ask your loved one’s neurologist or movement disorder

A physical therapist (PT) can recommend mobility aids such as walkers, bed rails, or shower chairs. Even small adjustments—
like securing loose cords or changing food textures—can make a meaningful di erence in daily safety.
COMMUNICATE IN CALM, SIMPLE WAYS
Advanced Parkinson’s can a ect speech, memory, and processing. Even if communication becomes di cult, your loved one may still understand and want to connect. Use short sentences, speak calmly, and rely on facial expressions or gentle touch. Shared activities like listening to music, looking at family photos, or sitting outdoors can help maintain connection. If hallucinations, confusion, or sudden changes in thinking occur, notify the PD care team.
SUPPORT SAFE EATING AND DRINKING
Swallowing di culties are common in advanced PD and can lead to weight loss or choking. A speechlanguage pathologist can evaluate swallowing and recommend safer food textures or strategies.
O ering smaller, more frequent meals may be easier than three large meals a day. Keep your loved one upright while eating or drinking to reduce choking risk. Educational tools like the Parkinson’s

Foundation CareMAP video series can also help care partners feel more confident managing eating, safety, memory changes, and advanced care needs.
STAY CONNECTED WITH THE CARE TEAM
Regular communication with doctors, therapists, and healthcare providers is essential. Report new symptoms or concerns promptly. The care team can help adjust medications, recommend home care services, and address questions related to mobility, mood, or cognition.
If additional support is needed, ask about palliative care. Palliative care focuses on comfort and quality of life at any stage of Parkinson’s and supports both the individual and their family through physical, emotional, and spiritual challenges.
TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF
Caring for someone with advanced Parkinson’s is demanding, and caregiver burnout is common. Prioritizing your own health is not selfish—it is necessary.
Set boundaries, take breaks, and seek emotional support when needed. The Parkinson’s
Foundation Care Partner Guide and Helpline can connect you with education, support groups, and local services to help you sustain your caregiving role.
PLAN FOR WHAT’S NEXT
Planning ahead can ease uncertainty. Talk with your loved one and care team about future needs, such as home safety updates, daily assistance, assisted living, or long-term care. Organize important documents and discuss care preferences, including endof-life wishes, so decisions reflect your loved one’s values.
As Parkinson’s progresses, additional help may be needed, such as full-time in-home care, residential care, or hospice near the end of life. While these decisions can be di cult, they can provide comfort, dignity, and better symptom management.
YOU ARE NOT ALONE
Thousands of families are navigating advanced Parkinson’s disease. Support is available. The Parkinson’s Foundation o ers free resources, guides, and expert support to help you feel less overwhelmed and more prepared.
You are doing meaningful, c pa i ate work—and help is always within reach.

SCAM Email Targets Social Security Recipients
If you or a loved one are among the 71.6 million Americans receiving Social Security benefits, it’s important to be cautious when opening emails—especially those with attachments. A recent scam involves hackers posing as the Social Security Administration (SSA) and sending convincing, o cial-looking emails that can put your personal and financial information at risk.
These fraudulent emails prompt recipients to download what appears to be a Social Security statement. In reality, the attachment installs malicious software that allows hackers to take control of the victim’s computer. According to MalwareBytes Labs, this scam is designed to access sensitive information such as bank account logins and personal data. In addition to financial theft, the information can also be used for identity theft.
Understanding how these scams work—and knowing what to look out for—can help protect you and your loved ones.
WHAT ARE PHISHING SCAMS?
Phishing is a type of fraud in which cybercriminals pretend to be a trusted organization or individual in order to steal personal information. These scams are often carried out through emails, text messages, or phone calls that appear legitimate. Phishing messages are designed to gain your trust and prompt quick action, such as clicking a link or downloading an attachment. Scammers often hide their identity using technology that makes their messages di cult to trace.
Phishing emails are extremely common. According to AAG IT Support, more than 3.4 billion phishing emails are sent every day. Google alone blocks approximately 100 million phishing emails daily. While many are filtered out, some manage to bypass security systems and land directly in inboxes.
The National Council on Aging (NCOA) reports that older adults are frequent targets of scams.
Scammers may assume seniors have more financial resources, making them especially vulnerable. In fact, Americans age 60 and older reported total fraud losses of $3.4 billion in 2023.
WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR
Be cautious of emails claiming to be from the Social Security Administration that say something like, “Your Social Security statement is now available.” These emails often look authentic, using o cial-looking fonts, colors, and formatting.
Typically, the message thanks you for opting into electronic statements and instructs you to download an attachment. However, the SSA O ce of the Inspector General (OIG) warns that these scam emails—while convincing—do not come from a legitimate .gov email address, which is required for o cial government communications.
HOW THE SCAM WORKS
When a recipient downloads the attachment, they are unknowingly installing a program called ScreenConnect. ScreenConnect is a legitimate remote access tool commonly used by IT professionals to help troubleshoot computers. In the hands of cybercriminals, however, this technology allows hackers to remotely control the victim’s computer. Once installed, scammers may access personal files, banking information, passwords, and other sensitive data.
WHY THE EMAIL MAY BYPASS SECURITY FILTERS
This scam can be especially dangerous because the email may appear in your regular inbox rather than your spam folder. According to MalwareBytes Labs, the emails can bypass security filters by using legitimate-looking WordPress sites, embedding content as images to avoid detection, and relying on commonly used applications like ScreenConnect.
WHAT TO DO IF YOU RECEIVE A SUSPICIOUS EMAIL
If you receive an email that seems suspicious:
• Do not click links or download attachments.
• Delete the email and block the sender.
• Check the sender’s email address—o cial SSA emails must come from a .gov domain.
• Search online to see if similar scams have been reported.
• Ask a trusted family member or friend for a second opinion.
You can also report phishing emails to the Federal Trade Commission and review scam alerts posted by the SSA O ce of the Inspector General.
If you believe you have been a victim of a scam, consider contacting an elder law attorney. An attorney can help you address identity theft concerns, protect your finances, and navigate communication with the SSA.

When to Hire a Home Care Service for an Older Adult
For seniors and their families, hiring a home care service can support independence for the older adult while reducing stress on the family unit.
A home caregiver can assist with activities of daily living (ADLs), like bathing, dressing, preparing meals, chores like laundry and dishes, medication management, and transportation to and from appointments and outings. Skilled caregivers who are qualified nurses can also provide medical care for those with more complex medical needs.
When an older adult needs help with daily activities, this support can be invaluable. As an alternative to assisted living, a home care service can help people age in place in their homes, which many older adults would prefer. In fact, AARP reports that 75 percent of adults 50 and older want to remain in their homes as they age.
An Alternative to Family Caregivers
Many seniors rely on family members such as their spouses and grown children to provide unpaid support. Family caregivers may struggle to balance their own personal responsibilities and care for their loved one, leading to stress. According to Cleveland Clinic, an estimated 60 percent of caregivers say they experience
burnout, a state of physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion.
Meanwhile, older adults receiving care from a loved one may wrestle with feeling less independent, especially when the caregiver is their child.
Even having an in-home care person come a few times a week can a ord family caregivers more time to meet their own needs and do things they enjoy. The older adult may also be more receptive to professional help from someone outside the family unit.
Care Costs
While in-home care has many benefits, it comes at a cost.
In some states, home- and community-based service (HCBS) waivers provide Medicaid funding for in-home care. These programs have stringent medical and financial requirements. Medicare may also cover some home care services for certain medical conditions if the older adult meets specific requirements. In either case, individuals who do not meet these requirements may need to turn to private care options.
As of 2024, the median cost of private in-home care in the United States ranges was about $6,000 a month. Caregiver qualifications, services o ered, and location can a ect rates.
Skilled nursing care provided by an in-home health aide is more expensive, with the monthly median cost nationwide approaching $6,500. Licensed nurses can provide medical care at home, including medication administration and wound care.
Most families seeking help with caregiving for an aging loved one must take cost into consideration. However, often just as important is knowing when it may be the right time to hire a home care service.
When to Hire a Home Care Service
When an older adult needs help with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, and preparing meals and prefers to age in place, it may be time to hire a home care service. Here are some indications that it may be time to consider inhome care for an aging loved one:
• The older adult is having trouble with daily tasks. Signs that may raise concerns include a less clean home, infrequent bathing, and social withdrawal. The individual may seem sad, apathetic, or have lower energy.
• The older adult does not want help from family members. They may be more receptive to care from a neutral third party.
• Family caregivers are feeling overstretched and exhausted. They may even be experiencing personal health challenges worsened by caregiving stress or want more time for themselves, their work, or other responsibilities. Hiring a professional caregiving service can free them up.
• In-home care is the older adult’s preference for other long-term care options and is medically appropriate. While many seniors prefer to age in place, other longterm care options come with benefits like increased social opportunities or more a ordable round-the-clock medical care. Be sure to consider the various benefits and drawbacks of di erent care options before making a decision.

WHY VACCINATIONS
ARE IMPORTANT FOR SENIORS
Getting older brings wisdom and experience—but it can also bring a weakened immune system. As we age, vaccines become increasingly important in protecting our health. Below are answers to some of the most common questions seniors ask about preventive care and staying protected.
DOES THE IMMUNE SYSTEM CHANGE WITH AGE?
Yes. As we get older, the immune system does not respond to infections as e ectively as it once did. What may have been a minor illness in your 40s can become much more serious in your 70s or beyond. Vaccines help bridge this gap by training the immune system to recognize and fight diseases before they take hold.
The statistics are sobering. Seniors account for most hospitalizations and deaths from vaccine-preventable diseases such as influenza, pneumonia, and shingles. The good news is that many of these serious outcomes are largely preventable through vaccination.
WHAT ARE THE ESSENTIAL VACCINES FOR SENIORS?
Flu (Influenza): Seniors should receive a flu vaccine every year, ideally in early fall. Higher-dose flu vaccines are available for adults age 65 and older and o er improved protection. Even if you catch a flu strain di erent from the one included in the vaccine, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that vaccination can still help prevent
severe illness, hospitalization, and death.
Pneumococcal: Pneumococcal vaccines protect against pneumonia and other serious infections. Most older adults need two di erent pneumococcal vaccines, given at separate times, to achieve full protection.
Shingles: If you’ve had chickenpox—and most people over age 60 have—the virus remains dormant in your body and can reactivate later in life as shingles. Shingles can cause a painful, blistering rash and longlasting nerve pain. The shingles vaccine significantly reduces the risk.
Tdap/Td Booster: This vaccine protects against tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough). Adults should receive a booster every 10 years.
COVID-19: Like the flu vaccine, updated COVID-19 vaccines are released periodically to match current strains. Staying up to date is especially important for older adults, who are at higher risk for severe illness.
RSV: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccination is a newer recommendation for adults age 60 and older. RSV can cause serious lung infections, particularly in seniors and those with chronic health conditions.

Why Vaccinations are Important for Seniors
Continued from page 117
WHY IS “HERD IMMUNITY” IMPORTANT?
When you get vaccinated, you’re not just protecting yourself— you’re also helping protect others, including grandchildren, friends with weakened immune systems, and people who cannot be vaccinated. This concept, known as herd immunity, creates a protective barrier within the community. Historically, herd immunity has played a critical role in eliminating diseases such as polio and smallpox.
WHAT QUESTIONS SHOULD I ASK MY DOCTOR?
Having an open conversation with your healthcare provider is essential. Consider asking:
• Which vaccines do you recommend for me based on my age and health conditions?
• Are there any vaccines I should avoid due to my medical history or medications?
• What side e ects should I expect, and how can I manage them?
• Can I receive multiple vaccines during the same appointment?
WHERE CAN I FIND MORE INFORMATION?
• Start with your primary care physician, who can create a personalized vaccination schedule.
• Many pharmacies o er walk-in vaccinations and can check insurance coverage on the spot.
• Visit CDC.gov to review the adult immunization schedule.
• If you have Medicare, call 1-800-MEDICARE or visit Medicare.gov to understand your coverage—most recommended vaccines are covered with no out-of-pocket cost.
• State or local health departments often provide free or low-cost vaccinations.
• AARP.org o ers trusted resources specifically for older adults.
MAKE IT EASY ON YOURSELF
It’s easy to lose track of which vaccines you’ve received and when. Keep a record of your immunizations and ask your doctor for a copy if needed. Many healthcare systems also o er online portals where you can access this information. Mark your calendar for booster shots, and consider scheduling your annual flu vaccine around your birthday or another memorable date to make it part of your routine.

This is not reimbursed by Medicare.
P-PET THERAPY – There’s nothing like a visit from a four-legged creature to brighten the day of a terminally ill patient. Pet therapy teams visit with patients wherever they reside – at home or in professional care settings. Studies have shown many benefits of pet companionship, ranging from reduced blood pressure and anxiety to relief from boredom, pain and loneliness. This service is not reimbursed by Medicare.

Hospice Care Definitions
24/7 ADMISSIONS – If a patient qualifies for hospice care, they should be admitted as early as the family requests. Many agencies admit patients to hospice, 24/7, evenings weekends, and holidays.
GRIEF
SUPPORT GROUPS – Grief is the normal and universal reaction humans have to the loss of those they love. When your loved one passes, you may go through a period of bereavement and experience grief. Many hospice companies provide Grief Groups that meet and address issues of grief in a supportive group setting.
HOME HEALTH – Indicates whether the hospice agency has a sister home health agency that will provide assistance with medically based home health needs such as nursing services, home health aide services, physical therapy, occupational therapy, respiratory therapy or speech therapy.
INDIGENT
PATIENTS – Does the hospice accept non funded or indigent patients? This is usually on a case by case basis and at the determination of the hospice company. Many have a non-profit organization that can help support the care of non-covered patients.
PAIN PUMPS
AVAILABLE – Many patients have their symptoms controlled through oral medications. Some situations require a pain pump where medications are administered through an IV pump. If this is the situation, inquire with the hospice RN case manager to see if pain pumps are available through their agency.
PALLIATIVE CARE –
Specialized medical care for people with serious illness. It is focused on providing patients with relief from the symptoms, pain and stress of a serious illness – whatever the prognosis. It is appropriate at any age and at any stage in a serious illness and can be provided along with curative treatment.

The end of a person’s life is a significant time when they are able to reflect on their life and accomplishments, work through their regrets and challenges, and spend their remaining days with friends and family in comfort and peace.
For families whose loved one is experiencing a serious illness or life-limiting condition, this precious time is one of life’s most meaningful milestones.
As a provider of end-of-life care, hope for Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care does not necessarily lie in recovery; rather, it lies in ensuring the best quality of life for the people in our care. As our mission states, we provide expert care,
Finding Compassion and Hope Through Hospice Hospice
peace of mind, comfort, guidance, and hope to people who are a ected by serious illness or by grief. Hospice gives families the peace of mind to walk together with their loved ones through the end-of-life journey, and through the grief and healing journey.
We easily associate hope with a beginning: the birth of a new baby, the start of adulthood at high school graduation, or the pursuit of a new career. Hospice providers understand that hope is found throughout life. All families have hope that the end of their loved one’s life will be beautiful and memorable. Honoring that hope a rms that their life matters, and allows the impact someone made to carry on after their death.
Hospice honors the value of life by ensuring physical and emotional comfort and creating space for patients and their families to spend time together in peace. Kansas City Hospice also understands the importance of supporting families through their own grief and healing journey, which often begins before death and extends far beyond the loss of a loved one. This is why we also provide access to community grief support at no charge through our Solace House Center for Grief and Healing.
Hope doesn’t just represent what the future can hold – a cure, more time, major accomplishments – hope can be lived in the moment. It can simply be the ability to enjoy today and share moments of joy with those around you, unencumbered by the hardships of the past or the challenges of the future. It is through hospice that families are given the gift to walk together through one of life’s most significant milestones – the end of life.

When is the Right Time for Assisted Living?
As we or our loved one’s age, it’s natural for needs to change. Tasks that once felt routine — maintaining a home, preparing meals, or driving to appointments — can gradually become more di cult.
One of the most challenging decisions families face is knowing when it may be time to consider assisted living.
While the decision can feel emotional, it often leads to greater safety, peace of mind, and an improved quality of life. Understanding what assisted living o ers and recognizing common signs can help families approach the transition with confidence and clarity.
UNDERSTANDING ASSISTED LIVING
Assisted living communities are designed for older adults who value independence but benefit from additional support with daily activities. Services commonly include:
• Help with bathing, dressing, or grooming
• Medication management
• Housekeeping and laundry
• Nutritious, chef-prepared meals
• Transportation to appointments and outings
• Social and recreational activities
The goal of assisted living is to provide the right balance of independence and care — o ering support where needed while preserving dignity and autonomy.
SIGNS IT MAY BE TIME TO CONSIDER ASSISTED LIVING
Every situation is unique, but certain indicators may suggest that additional support would be beneficial.
Di culty managing daily tasks: Struggles with personal care, meal preparation, or housekeeping often develop slowly but can lead to safety concerns if left unaddressed.
Declining mobility or frequent falls: Trouble moving safely around the home or repeated falls increase the risk of serious injury. Assisted living communities are designed with accessibility, safety features, and 24-hour sta support.
Weight loss or poor nutrition: Skipped meals or reliance on convenience foods can lead to nutritional deficiencies. Assisted living provides balanced meals tailored to dietary needs.
Medication confusion: Managing multiple prescriptions can be overwhelming. Professional medication assistance helps ensure consistency and safety.
Social isolation: Loneliness is common among older adults

living alone. Assisted living fosters connection through planned activities, shared meals, and community engagement.
General safety concerns: Forgetting to turn o appliances, lock doors, or becoming disoriented may indicate the need for a more supportive environment.
NAVIGATING THE EMOTIONAL TRANSITION
Moving to assisted living is a major life change, and it’s normal for seniors and family members to experience anxiety or guilt. Reframing the transition as a proactive step toward improved quality of life can help ease those emotions.
Helpful strategies include starting conversations early, visiting communities together, focusing on lifestyle benefits, and allowing time for gradual planning rather than rushing decisions.
BENEFITS OF ASSISTED LIVING
Beyond practical support, assisted living provides meaningful emotional and social enrichment. Residents often experience:
• Peace of mind knowing help is always available
• Increased social interaction and friendships
• Freedom from home maintenance and chores
• Improved energy and mood through nutritious meals and activities
• Reassurance for families that loved ones are safe and supported
QUESTIONS TO GUIDE YOUR DECISION
Consider asking yourself:
• Is the current living situation safe?
• Are meals, hygiene, and medications being managed well?
• Is my loved one socially engaged or often alone?
• Would professional support improve their daily life?
• Is caregiving becoming overwhelming for family members?
Answering “yes” to several of these questions may indicate it’s time to explore assisted living options.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Choosing assisted living is not about giving up independence — it’s about gaining the right level of support to continue living fully. The right community can provide safety, companionship, and renewed purpose.
For many families, assisted living brings lasting peace of mind, knowing their loved one is not just cared for, but thriving in a warm, supportive environment.

How Pairing Older Adults with Older Pets Can Benefit Both
In recent years, a heartwarming trend has emerged across the United States: senior adults adopting senior pets. These special connections are often life-changing for both the pets and the people. Though puppies and kittens tend to get the spotlight at shelters, older animals o er a di erent companionship option that can be a perfect match for older adults.
At the same time, however, senior humans and pets alike can face similar challenges, such as health concerns, mobility limitations, and the need for routine. Yet when the match is right, the
fulfilling bond.
BENEFITS OF SENIOR ADULTS ADOPTING SENIOR PETS
Adopting a pet, especially a dog or a cat, o ers benefits such as constant companionship and unconditional love. For older adults, the benefits of a senior pet can be even greater, including:
• Calm Companionship. Senior pets, much like their human counterparts, have typically outgrown the hyperactive phase of youth. They’re less likely to chew on furniture, scratch at doors, or require hours of intense exercise. This melcompanionship without
result is often a deeply low temperament aligns well with the lifestyle of many senior adults, o ering peaceful the high-energy demands of younger animals.
• Reduced Loneliness and Improved Mental Health. For older adults, especially those living alone, a senior pet can o er structure, emotional support, and a sense of purpose. Studies have shown that pet ownership can reduce feelings of loneliness, help ward o depression, and even lower blood pressure. Just having a living being to care for and talk to can make a significant di erence in one’s daily life.
• Predictable Personality. Unlike younger animals who are still developing their personalities, senior pets are typically more predictable in behavior. Shelter sta can better match them with suitable adopters, knowing their preferences for activity level, temperament, and social habits. This increases the likelihood of a successful, long-term adoption.
• Giving a Second Chance. Many senior pets are surrendered through no fault of their own— perhaps due to the illness or death of their previous owners. Adopting one of these animals gives them a second chance at life in a loving home, something that is especially meaningful to many older adults who have weathered life’s changes themselves.
CHALLENGES TO CONSIDER
As great of an experience as owning a pet can be, there are some aspects to consider, including:
• Health and Veterinary Costs. Older pets, like older humans, can face age-related health issues. Arthritis, dental problems, or kidney disease may require regular veterinary care and medications. For senior adults on a fixed income, these costs can be a barrier. However, some shelters and rescue programs o er discounted medical care or provide support through senior pet adoption programs.
• Mobility and Physical Ability. Just as some older adults may struggle with mobility, some older pets may need help getting around. Tasks like lifting a large dog into a car or cleaning a litter box can be physically taxing for some people. It’s important to choose a pet whose care needs match the adopter’s physical capabilities.
• Emotional Considerations. Senior pets, by definition, may have fewer years left to share with their new owners. Although the time together can be deeply rewarding, losing a beloved companion can be heartbreaking. Prospective adopters should be prepared for the emotional aspects of owning an older pet, but many say the joy of the relationship far outweighs the pain of eventual loss.
• Long-Term Planning. Senior adults may have their own health concerns or face the possibility of moving to assisted

living facilities that don’t allow pets. Planning for a pet’s future care, whether through family, friends, or pet legacy programs, can provide peace of mind and ensure the pet’s safety in the event of illness or death.
SUPPORTIVE PROGRAMS AND RESOURCES
Many animal welfare organizations recognize the value of senior-to-senior adoptions and have created initiatives to encourage them. For example:
• Some shelters o er “Seniors for Seniors” programs that often waive or reduce adoption fees for senior citizens adopting older pets.
• Pet companionship grants or subsidies may help with vet
care, food, or supplies.
• Home visit support or check-ins may be available to help ensure the match remains safe and sustainable for both pet and owner.
FINDING AND CARING FOR AN OLDER PET
Adopting a senior pet is more than an act of compassion it can be the start of a mutually beneficial relationship. And though there are challenges to consider, there are also meaningful rewards: comfort, companionship, and unconditional love in life’s later years.
You can contact your local animal shelter or use a more wide-ranging resource such as Petfinder to find your new best friend.

Short-term, goal-oriented medical care and support provided in the comfort of your own home. Whether your goal is to return to your normal daily routine or to manage a chronic condition, our nurses and therapists work closely with you and your doctor to accomplish those goals.
