You can’t read the news without hearing confusing reports on how to age in a healthy way.
Is it drinking a glass of wine every day? A routine sleep schedule? Eating more eggs – or fewer eggs?
Whether you’re 45 or 75, what can you do to live a longer and healthier life?
The key is having health care providers who treat you as a whole
with Dale Bredesen, M.D., best-selling author and international expert in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s.
Today, Grey Matters is the first primary care clinic in the nation that focuses solely on managing cognitive health and preventing cognitive decline by combining Dr. Bredesen’s protocols with a primary care approach.
Patient testimonials show the clinic is making a difference. Said one patient:
You’re a whole person, and that’s how you should be treated.
person, says Deb Geihsler, CEO and Co-founder of Grey Matters Health in Sarasota.
“If you’re just being treated for your diabetes or heart disease, who is managing your overall health? You’re a whole person, and that’s how you should be treated,” she said.
“We use the principles of functional medicine to identify the root causes of your health concerns – not just your symptoms to promote lasting wellness. That means we treat you with primary and integrated care that’s evidence-based, plus ongoing support throughout your life.”
Along with primary care and functional medicine, Grey Matters specializes in preventing, delaying or even reversing cognitive decline. Geihsler co-founded Grey Matters
“I feel like a totally different person. Even my family members have noticed a difference in my behavior. We feel like we have someone who is really taking care of us.”
Editor’s Note: Grey Matters is located at 2801 Fruitville Rd, Suite 290, Sarasota. Grey Matters also has locations in Jacksonville and Ponte Vedra Beach, as well as treating patients around the nation remotely.

Life Care Planning is a compassionate, team-based approach within elder law that helps families navigate the complex journey of aging, long-term care, and asset protection.
Unlike traditional elder law, which often focuses solely on legal documents, Life Care Planning brings together legal guidance, care coordination, and advocacy into one comprehensive service. It addresses both the practical and emotional challenges that come with caring for an aging loved one, helping families make informed decisions with clarity and confidence.
At our firm, we combine the legal expertise of a board-certified
elder law attorney with the handson experience of an Elder Care Coordinator. The coordinator helps families assess care needs, find appropriate in-home or facility care, connect with trusted community resources, and communicate with doctors and caregivers. Meanwhile, our legal team ensures that financial and estate planning align with those care decisions.
Life Care Planning gives families more than documents — it gives them peace of mind, a plan for the future, and a trusted team to turn to when health or circumstances change. It’s proactive, personal, and truly lifechanging.

Hearing loss is one of the most common chronic health conditions in the U.S. While age, genetics, and other risk factors play a role, certain repeated behaviors can also damage your hearing over time. In fact, hearing loss often develops gradually because of everyday habits that many people don’t even realize are harmful.
The good news? Once you understand which habits pose a risk, you can make easy changes to pro-tect your hearing for the long term. Below, we list some of the most common activities and habits that increase the risk of hearing loss and provide tips on how to protect yourself.
1. Using loud equipment without hearing protection - Using proper ear protection like ear-muffs or earplugs can decrease the risk of permanent hearing loss.
2. Cranking up the stereo in the car - To protect your hearing, a good rule of thumb is to al-ways keep the stereo volume at a level where you can still carry on a conversation without having to shout.
3. Skipping earplugs at loud events - Earplugs are a simple and easy way to protect your hear-ing without sacrificing your enjoyment or entertainment.
4. Using headphones at max volume - Follow the 60/60 rule keeping the volume no louder than 60% the maximum volume for no more than 60 minutes at a time.
5. Using cotton swabs to clean your ears - Cotton swabs often push
wax deeper into the ear canal instead of removing it, which can lead to impaction, infections, or even damage to the eardrum. If you feel like your ears are blocked, it’s important to consult a hearing spe-cialist for care.
6. Smoking cigarettes - Cigarette smoke contains toxins that can interfere with your blood flow, which can damage the fragile structures in your inner ear. They also affect neurotransmitter function, disrupting the way your ears process sound. Over time, this can lead to permanent hearing loss.
7. Excessive alcohol - Drinking heavily can damage the auditory nerve. Alcohol can also re-duce blood flow to the inner ear, depriving the delicate structures of the oxygen and nutri-ents they need. Limiting alcohol intake not only supports overall health but also helps pro-tect your hearing in the long run.
8. Putting off hearing check-upsDelaying routine hearing check-ups can allow subtle changes to progress to bigger issues. Even if you feel your hearing is fine, routine check-ups are one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect your long-term hearing health.
If you or a loved one has noticed recent changes in your hearing, scheduling a hearing consultation is vital. Early detection of hearing loss plays a crucial role. Call (239)-3925590 today to schedule a hearing consultation today!

At Breakthrough Health Centers, our mission is simple yet profound: to instill hope, maximize God-given potential, and create true breakthroughs for people living with unresolved, debilitating conditions such as vertigo, migraines, chronic spinal pain, and neuropathy.
Too often, patients feel trapped in a cycle of temporary relief and unanswered questions. Your story deserves more, your health deserves a breakthrough.
We’ve developed the 7 Steps to Freedom, a proven pathway designed to uncover root causes, restore balance, and rebuild health from the inside out.
1. Focused Consultation - Your health story matters. We listen, assess, and set meaningful goals.
2. Advanced Diagnostics - We test using digital posture scans, neurosensory testing, range-of-motion testing, sEMG scans, weight distribution analysis, and X-rays.
3. 1-on-1 Report - We help you understand the why behind your pain and outline clear recommendations.
4. Pain & Inflammation Relief - We neutralize the drivers of inflammation, targeting the root, not just the symptoms.
5. Progress Re-Tests - We track measurable improvements every step of the way.
6. Condition-Specific Rehab - Designed to rebuild, strengthen, and restore structural integrity.
7. Strength & Stabilization - The stage where healing locks in and long-
term resilience is achieved. Our care is not a sprint, it’s a marathon. We don’t mask symptoms. We correct the underlying dysfunction to help your body restore its God-given ability to heal.
Three pillars make us unique:
• Upper Cervical Chiropractic (Orthospinology): A gentle, precise technique requiring no twisting, popping, or cracking. By focusing on the first two bones in the neck and their intimate connection with the brain, brainstem and spinal cord, we support communication between brain and body.
• Chiropractic Biophysics (CBP): The most researched method in chiropractic, CBP helps us rehabilitate spinal structure for long-lasting results. Normal spinal baselines exist for spinal structures, much like healthy baselines exist for blood pressure or cholesterol.
• Comprehensive Healing Services: From SoftWave TRT therapy and red light therapy to advanced neuropathy protocols, nutrition resets, weight loss programs, and custom orthotics, we provide wraparound support to accelerate healing.
At Breakthrough Health Centers, our holistic and research-backed approach empowers patients to reclaim their lives, one breakthrough at a time.
It’s time to stop masking symptoms and start experiencing true healing. Call us today to schedule your consultation and discover your unique Breakthrough Blueprint.

When you think of an “Older American,” what image comes to mind? Do you just think of someone slow, weak or frail?
Our goal at Baker Senior Center Naples is to flip the script on such agerelated stereotypes. Our stated mission is to provide “Confidence, Connection and Support” to adults over the age of 60 and their families, helping them thrive and enjoy life to its fullest. We do this through a range of comprehensive programs.
Often, we hear visitors share comments as they walk into our building for the first time. Comments such as, “Wow! This is not what I expected a senior center to be” or “This place is so bright and beautiful,” or “Everyone seems so active and happy.”
After hearing these comments so frequently, I eventually began to ask, “What did you expect?” The responses were always the same, “I expected it to be dark and dreary” or “I never expected it to be so big, bright and
clean” or “I expected to see people sitting around and disengaged.”
Those who have visited us know that our 30,000-square-foot building, which opened in 2023, is filled with light and brightly colored art and, most importantly, members and clients who are engaged and thrive through the many wellness programs we offer. We dispel the myths created about aging through the media that often portray seniors as frail, forgetful and depressed.
We are one of just 111 senior centers in the United States accredited by the National Council on Aging, and the only one that provides comprehensive services by licensed and credentialed professionals such as mental health counseling, case management, dementia respite groups and caregiver support, all under one roof. We also offer a “choice” food pantry for those in need.
We invite you to visit us at 6200 Autumn Oaks Lane as we “Flip the Script on Aging.”

American

You’ve likely heard the news: a sweeping new tax law, the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” was just passed.
Think of it like a home renovation. The 2017 tax cuts laid the foundation. This law builds on it—adding new features, removing outdated ones.
It’s controversial. Some love it, others don’t. But regardless of the politics, what matters is how it could impact you: your taxes, your savings, your financial future.
Here’s a quick breakdown:
• Tax brackets stay the same. The standard deduction rises in 2025 to $15,750 single / $31,500 joint.
• SALT deduction cap jumps to $40,000 in 2025, increasing through 2029.
• Seniors may qualify for an extra $6,000 deduction.
• Child Tax Credit increases to $2,200. Babies born 2025–2028 receive a $1,000 “Trump Account.”
• Student loan repayment plans are changing.
• 529 plans become more flexible. This law spans 900+ pages. If you want help navigating the changes, let’s connect.

In the heart of Southwest Florida, two women are quietly transforming the way people think about health, healing, and aging. Danielle Rambur and Lisa Lahners aren’t just local representatives of Centropix—they’re passionate advocates for living life to the fullest at every stage.
For Danielle, this mission is deeply personal. A cancer survivor and founder of the WayMakers team, she understands what it means to fight for health—and to rediscover it. Her journey inspired her to help others reclaim energy, balance, and joy
and brings it home—literally—with the Kloud, a portable, wireless, in-home wellness device that helps recharge the body naturally.
From kids to grandparents—and even pets—the Kloud supports wellness for every member of the family. Regular use helps relieve pain and inflammation, improve sleep, boost energy, sharpen focus, and speed up recovery from daily wear or injury.
Behind the innovation is Prof. Dr. Wolf A. Kafka, a pioneer in frequency therapy. His breakthrough design allows the Centropix Kloud to deliver
Holistic care is rising to the level of Nobel Prize-winning science that incorporates physics and electromagnetic technology - and finally addresses the root cause of biological imbalance, especially molecular imbalance.
through natural wellness solutions. Lisa brings her own passion for movement and strength. With a background in fitness and a heart for helping seniors, she believes that aging doesn’t have to mean slowing down—it can mean living with confidence, freedom, and purpose.
Together, they’re introducing Southwest Florida to the science-backed power of Pulsed Electromagnetic Activation (PEMA) technology. For more than three decades, researchers have studied how energy and frequency can support the body’s ability to heal, regenerate, and thrive. Centropix takes that research
more than 23 million impulses in just 15 minutes—a dramatic leap from traditional PEMF devices. The result is deeper cellular support and lasting vitality.
As Danielle and Lisa often say, “Bring the future of medicine into your living room.” With Centropix, families can continue doing what they love for years to come—staying active, independent, and joyful.
Learn more at www.bravehearthw. com or contact Danielle Rambur (303594-6832) or Lisa Lahners (402-6903413) to discover a better way to age gracefully.

Here in Southwest Florida, Danielle Rambur and Lisa Lahners proudly represent Centropix. Danielle, a cancer survivor and wellness advocate, leads with passion through her WayMakers team, helping others reclaim health and vitality. Lisa brings a fitness background and a heart for empowering seniors to move with confidence and strength. Together, they are here to help families discover a natural, effective way to age gracefully — with more energy, less pain, and greater joy.
Much like a battery, our bodies can lose energy as we age, leading to pain, stiffness, inflammation, and fatigue. Add in the stress of modern life, and many seniors find it harder to stay active and independent. Centropix helps recharge the body at the cellular level, offering:

• Pain & inflammation relief for arthritis, joint discomfort, and recovery
• Better sleep through relaxation and nervous system balance

• Increased energy & endurance for daily living
• Stress reduction and greater emotional calm

• Sharper mental focus and clarity

• Faster recovery from surgery, injury, or overexertion.

Take quick action with a possible heart attack or stroke. Life—threatening blockages and arrhythmias need timely detection and treatment to support the best possible outcome. Waiting to get help can increase the damage to heart muscle or brain tissue.
Physicians Regional Healthcare System has resources ready to support diagnosis and intervention in the event of heart attack or stroke. Both hospitals have received full Chest Pain Center with Primary PCI Accreditations and are Accredited Echocardiography Centers. This means that they both have percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) available 24/7 on site. Our cardiac care teams provide complete heart care services for patients throughout the area.
The cardiac program gives patients local access to a team of specialists from emergency management services, emergency department, and cath lab to floor nurses, boardcertified and fellowship trained cardiac physicians and advanced practice nurses providing rapid response, evaluation, diagnosis and treatment in an environment that is dedicated to cardiac care.
Physicians Regional Pine Ridge is a joint commission thrombectomy capable stroke center. They are also the first hospital to hold the distinction of DNV Comprehensive Stroke Center Certification in Collier County.
That designation encompasses the full spectrum of stroke care— diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and education—and establishes clear metrics to evaluate outcomes. Physicians Regional Collier Blvd is a DNV Primary Stroke Center, meaning that the medical center addresses the full spectrum of stroke care –diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and education – and establishes clear metrics to evaluate outcomes
PRHS has also received the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines- Stroke Quality Achievement Award for their commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment. Our stroke team is part of an elite group of professionals that provide advanced care to patients presenting with severe types of strokes. We offer a higher level of treatment and specialized care in the spectrum of diagnostic studies, treatments, procedures, prevention, and rehabilitation resources.
Physicians Regional Healthcare System encourages patients to not put off medical care and seek help if needed. Calling 9-1-1 for an ambulance is the best action when someone you are with experiences heart attack or stroke symptoms. EMS crews are trained to care for patients experiencing heart attack and stroke, so you’ll get medical care sooner.

We specialize in health insurance for all ages. It is very important to work with a local broker that represents all or most insurance companies in your area. Medicare Annual Enrollment 10/1-12/7, Marketplace (Obama care) 11/1-12/15 each year.
Medicare Open Enrollment, if you choose a plan, you are not happy with you can make a 1 time move 1/1 to 3/31 for the 1st of the month effective.
Special Enrollment Periods are essential and time sensitive. If you move out of your plans service area, leaving employer group coverage, lose/gain of Medicaid, this is a partial list of exceptions to enrollments.
Your agent should be in contact
each year to make sure that you are on the best plan for the following year. If it’s not broken don’t fix it does not apply to Part D drug plans or Medicare Advantage plans as they change every year and so does your health.
We are local in SWFL and licensed in over 36 states. So, no matter where you are we can help you with making the best decision for your needs. There is no charge for our healthcare review and services. We are contracted with most carriers and others can always be added, quick.

My name is Kim Amstutz, a Certified Senior Housing Professional/Realtor who specializes in all things seniors–providing not just real estate expertise but also emotional support, community resources, and a holistic plan for housing transitions.
As we age, two powerful forces shape our decisions: control and legacy. Control matters because so much feels beyond our control - health, driving, finances, even independence. Holding on to choices is a way to hold on to dignity. Legacy matters because time feels shorter, and meaning takes center stage. How will we be remembered? What values
will we pass down?
Your home is at the center of both. It’s not just four walls– it’s your history, your memories, your “Alamo.” Deciding to sell isn’t about giving up; it’s about taking control of the next chapter and honoring the life you’ve built.
My role is to walk beside you, not ahead of you. I’ll ask questions, listen carefully, and respect the meaning your home holds. Together, we’ll create a plan that keeps you in charge while opening the door to whatever comes next– with dignity, respect, and peace of mind.

A community that offers several kinds of residences for independent living and various levels of health care services.
CCRCs usually provide a written agreement or long-term contract between the resident (frequently lasting the term of the resident’s lifetime) and the community is generally all on one campus or site.
Most CCRCs require a one-time upfront entrance fee and a predictable monthly fee, which gives the resident the right to occupy an independent living residence, enjoy all the services and amenities offered by the community, and have access to long-term on-site health care when and if they need it. CCRCs are designed to provide an active, fulfilling lifestyle, along with peace of mind for the future. Age restriction is usually 62+, although that varies from one community to another. While all CCRCs offer residential accommodations and amenities, the range and cost of entrance fees and monthly service fees may vary.
CCRC CONTRACT TYPES – A CCRC offers different types of payment contracts.
A Life Care community is a CCRC that offers complete access to not only full-service housing options and a wide range of premium amenities and
services, but also complete on-site long-term health care. Through a one-time entrance fee and monthly service fee, the resident has a home for life at this type of community. If the need arises for assisted living, memory support or skilled nursing, the resident may transfer to the appropriate level of care at a predetermined, substantially discounted monthly rate for as long as care is needed. Type A Life Care communities promise to care for residents for the rest of their lives, without significantly increasing their monthly fees. Contract specifics vary, however, the benefit of all Life Care contracts is that — except for annual increases in monthly service fees charged to all community residents — those who opt for Life Care know they can count on high-quality care, all available on the same community campus — at predictable rates for the rest of their lives, and they’ll generally be paying far less than they would on the open market for txxhese services. They know where they’ll get this care, who will provide it, and how much it will cost.
These communities provide housing, services and amenities, with assisted living, memory support and skilled nursing care typically provided by a contract that is one of two types: 1) a limited number of free days included as part of the entrance fee, with additional care billed at per diem market rates, or 2) an ongoing, minimally discounted rate. Health care services
may be delivered on or off site, and two monthly fees may be incurred if couples require different levels of care.
In a fee-for-service community contract, housing, services and amenities are provided under a residence agreement. Access to long-term care, as needed, is typically guaranteed, but charged at fee-for-service market rates. If the resident at some point requires care on a short-term basis, in order to maintain their independent living residence, that resident would be required to pay the monthly fee on the independent living residence, plus the costs of housing and health care received in the assisted living, memory support or skilled nursing residence.
(CCAH) - Often referred to as a “CCRC without Walls” Continuing Care at Home, members enroll when they’re healthy and well; they pay fees (typically an entrance fee paid either up front or over a period of time and a monthly or annual fee) in exchange for a promise of future care. Services covered by the plan include care coordination, nonmedical home
care, emergency response system, adult day care and coordination of Medicare services, all designed to help the individual remain at home for as long as possible. Access to care in an assisted living or nursing home, if it becomes necessary, is also part of most programs. If the member experiences a change in health, the CCaH care coordinator arranges for the needed services, and the plan pays for the care—up to daily and lifetime limits selected at the time of enrollment.
Residents living in an equity CCRC actually own their home or apartment but still pay a monthly service fee or “membership fee” for services and amenities, including home maintenance and all of the other hospitality and operating services. As with any type of residential real estate, the property will eventually pass to the resident’s heirs or the estate. Not all equity CCRC’s have all levels of care onsite. If a resident of requires long-term care, they would likely be able to tap into the equity of the home via an equity line or reverse mortgage, if necessary. With this model, residents will usually pay the full market rate cost of long-term care services if and when needed.

NITY: Active adult communities offer independent, relatively maintenance-free living to residents aged 55 and over. In “age restricted” active adult communities, 80% of homeowners must be 55 and over, while “age-targeted” communities simply market to the 55+ crowd.
Communities designed specifically for the aging adult to enhance quality of life and remain independent as long as possible. A community may offer annual rentals or month-to-month. Independent Communities provide residents with convenient access to dining and meal plans, entertainment anzd social activities, transportation, housekeeping and laundry, maintenance, wellness
clinics, and access to third party medical services. Apartment styles vary and can include studios, one bedrooms, or two bedrooms. Communities offer amenities such as full kitchens, on-site pool, fitness center, walking paths, and more. These communities are NOT licensed to provide personal/nursing care.
If you or your loved one may not need all the benefits of assisted living, then supervised independent living may be the right option for you. It’s the perfect bridge between being completely independent and not necessarily needing all of the care assisted living residents may need. Traditional independent options plus the option of adding ala carte personal care services as needed.

Assisted living provides a combination of housing, personal care services, and health care designed to respond to individuals who need assistance with normal daily activities in a way that promotes maximum independence. Services include, but are not limited to:
• Nutritional meals and special diets
• Supervision and assistance with personal care (bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, transfers, and eating)
• Health monitoring
• Assistance with self-administration of medications
• Arrange for health care and mental health services
• Provide or arrange for transportation to medical appointments
• Housekeeping and Laundry services
• Daily social and leisure activities
• Supervise residents with dementia and/or cognitive impairments
• Provide or arrange for rehabilitative services
• Provide escort services to medical appointments
• Educational programs to promote health and prevent illness
There are four types of assisted living licenses. A community must have a
standard assisted living community license in order to operate in the state of Florida. The other four licenses can be added in order for the community to provide services designated outside the spectrum of a standard assisted living community license.
A residential community that provides direct physical assistance with or the supervision of activities of daily living, assistance with medication(s) and other similar services.
(LNS) LICENSE: An assisted living community with a LNS license provides the same services as a Standard License Community as well as nursing services provided by licensed nurses within the scope of their nursing practice. The resident would still need to meet admission and continued residency criteria. LNS services include but are not limited to:
• Nursing assessments
• Administration of medications
• Measurement and recording of vital signs and weight
• Dietary management, including special diets, monitoring nutrition, food, and fluid intake
• Diabetes management, oxygen administration, and wound care
(ECC) LICENSE: An assisted living community with an ECC license allows a resident to age in place. In addition
to LNS services, ECC communitites provide:
• Total help with bathing, dressing, grooming and toileting
• Assistance with (non-nasogastric) tube feeding
An assisted living community that serves three or more mental health residents. The basic services of assisted living are provided to the resident. In addition to these services, LMH license provides mental heatlh services to support the individual.
MEMORY CARE: These are licensed assisted living communities that specialize in delivering care to residents suffering from a cognitive impairment. These include but are not limited to: mild cognitive impairment, dementia and Alzheimer’s. Communities are secure for residents’ safety and provide 24-hour supervised care. The same license rules apply as assisted living. Staff members are trained for the special needs of this population.
Circumstances require a caregiver to seek temporary senior housing for your loved one. Knowing they can move seamlessly into an emergency care environment that supports the wellness needs of seniors allows peace of mind when you are called away for business or vacation, or if you just need a short break from caregiving.
(ADLs): Define the personal care services available in assisted living and include bathing, dressing, grooming, bathroom assistance, eating and ambulation. Medication Administration and transferring are not ADLs but are factors in determining a person’s level of functioning.
There are two general types of adult day care programs. One is based on a medical model and the other on a social model. The medical model provides comprehensive medical, therapeutic, and rehabilitation day treatment. The social model offers supervised activities, peer support, companionship, and recreation. Both models assist older adults and those with chronic conditions to remain as independent as possible, for as long as possible.

SKILLED NURSING FACILITIY (SNF):
This level of care is typically found in a nursing center or a transitional care unit in a hospital.
Skilled Nursing commonly offers two types of care within the community, short-term rehabilitation and longterm care.
