LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHERS DEAR SENIORS, PROFESSIONALS, AND FRIENDS We are so excited to share this edition with you and are especially excited to introduce a fresh new look and easier-to-navigate layout designed to make finding the resources you need easier than ever! One of the biggest changes you’ll notice is the way our listings are organized. Instead of searching through listings strictly in alphabetical order, we have grouped services into specific categories, making it easier to find the type of resource you are looking for. Senior Housing and Home Health Grids are Bigger, Cleaner and Easier to Read - The information is now presented vertically, with a cleaner format that makes it easier to compare and locate important information. We have also incorporated larger fonts, helpful icons, and updated side tabs throughout the book to make navigating the guide more intuitive. These changes are all part of our goal to make the Seniors Blue Book more user-friendly for seniors and everyone who helps care for them. And remember, the Seniors Blue Book is more than a printed guide. Visit SBBAGC.com anytime for an expanded online experience featuring detailed listings, photos, videos, local events, informative articles, and even more resources that are all designed with you in mind. Best of all, it is completely FREE! You can also find your complimentary copy of the Seniors Blue Book at more than 300 convenient locations throughout Baldwin, Clarke, Conecuh, Escambia, Mobile, Monroe, and Washington counties. We hope you love the new look and feel of this edition as much as we do. With gratitude and warmest regards, Chris and Monica Leslie, Publishers For current information, visit: SBBAGC.com Follow us on Facebook: facebook.com/SeniorsBlueBookAGC

FINANCIAL & LEGAL SERVICES

What Happens If the Caregiver Can’t Give Care? As we are all aging, it is critical to have a discussion about what you want if you become incapacitated, and a reality that a loved one will be elected (or drafted) as caregiver in case you do. BUT we see so often that you may outlive your caregiver. What happens then? FIRST, MAKE A PLAN. Have a written plan of your wishes if you are unable to make decisions. Be sure to have contingency plans in case things go awry, such as your loved one not surviving you. Have a backup or several backup caregivers or plans in place. This Is Why You Need a Power of Attorney Everyone should execute a durable power of attorney for healthcare and for finances. This legal document gives someone you appoint the ability to make healthcare decisions for you if you can’t, or to handle your finances if you are unable. If you do not execute these documents and you become incapacitated suddenly, your family will be forced to go to probate court and seek a guardianship. This is an expensive and difficult process that is unnecessary in some cases if you do take care of your paperwork in advance. Be sure and appoint several successors but only people that you trust. This is also an excellent place to 30 ALABAMA GULF COAST – FALL 2026-WINTER 2027

put in writing who you do not trust and who should not be in charge of either/or healthcare or finances. You should NEVER elect to appoint a stranger who is not a professional as your attorney in fact. What If There Are No Backups? That is the point in time we do need to rely upon friends, community members and social workers. It is a good time to review exactly who is trustworthy or not. The Court can appoint professional guardians and conservators who would be responsible to the court for your wellbeing and bonded to insure your finances do not go missing. Do not appoint someone who is not trustworthy because you think you have no choice. In Alabama, the Probate Court of your county opens a case upon the filing of a petition for guardianship and appoints two lawyers to your case; one lawyer will represent you – the “alleged incapacitated person”, and the other will represent the Court. The Court requires that you be given proper notice and the opportunity to appear at a hearing. Medical evidence showing your incapacity must be sworn. If the court finds that you are incapacitated, then the Court enters an Order finding so and issues Letters of Guardianship, which gives the Guardian the ability to

Shadows & Sunshine: The Realities of Aging Each stage of life brings its unique joys and challenges. As we age, we find a greater sense of selfhood, increased time spent with loved ones, and special wisdom brought about by a life well lived. On the other hand, aging brings a myriad of unexpected changes. Many seniors have beautiful honesty and openness when it comes to bringing these topics to life. They’re just waiting to be asked. They will honestly say that as physical health declines, often so does mental and spiritual health. Many seniors’ day to day living is overwhelmed with anxiety caused by: unexpected illnesses and accidents complicated medical information u lack of family support u l oss of independence or bodily mobility u memory loss and mental decline u scammers who prey on the elderly u u

The lack of control within these situations is a burden too many seniors face, resulting in an increase in loneliness and a loss of quality of life. I talk with seniors almost daily, whether through work or with friends and family in my community. It’s easy to see there’s no magic fix available. Many resources are out available to provide care and ease anxieties, but too often they’re impossible to find, expensive, or only accessible through technology. 32 ALABAMA GULF COAST – FALL 2026-WINTER 2027

The more I listen the more I realize the effective strategies which bring peace of mind are usually quite simple. Healthy and safe living is more than just doctor visits and daily medication; its compassionate and practical steps: accepting help from family and friends u e lder care planning u d aily routines for strengthening overall wellbeing u t alking with loved ones who listen intently u e ngaging in your community or church u e xploring old and new passions such as gardening or music u s tructuring your home to ensure safety u s taying sharp by reading or working puzzles u

It’s understandable to experience days of worry, especially when pain and uncertainty can be unavoidable. Aging and hardships are inevitable, but so are joy and peace. Each day is a gift and a chance to take the next steps towards nurturing a daily life of peace, purpose, and preparation. Give us a call, we are here to help. ~ Editor’s Note: This article was submitted by Madeline Holt with Ashley Day Law, LLC and may be reached at 251-277-3377 or by email at madeline@ashleydaylaw.com See ad on facing page.

The 8 Money Milestones Between 59½ and 70 Understanding these milestones can help you make more informed decisions about your retirement income.

59½ — Retirement Account Withdrawals At age 59½, you can generally begin taking money from traditional IRAs and 401(k) plans without the additional 10% early-withdrawal penalty. However, withdrawals from traditional retirement accounts are generally subject to income taxes. 60 — Survivor Benefits May Begin If you are a surviving spouse, Social Security survivor benefits may generally become available as early as age 60. The amount you receive can depend on factors including your age when you claim and the deceased spouse’s earnings record.

60–63 — A Larger 401(k) Catch-Up Opportunity Workers between ages 60 and 63 may be eligible for a higher 401(k) catch-up contribution limit under federal retirement rules. For 2025, the 36 ALABAMA GULF COAST – FALL 2026-WINTER 2027

special catch-up limit is $11,250, allowing eligible workers to put more toward retirement than the standard catch-up amount.

62 — Social Security Can Begin Age 62 is generally the earliest age most people can begin receiving Social Security retirement benefits. However, claiming before your full retirement age means receiving a reduced monthly benefit.

63 — Watch Your Income Income at age 63 can have an impact on your Medicare costs beginning at age 65 because Medicare generally uses tax-return information from

The 8 Money Milestones Between 59½ and 70 (continued) two years earlier when determining whether higher-income beneficiaries pay additional premiums.

65 — Medicare For many Americans, 65 is the key Medicare milestone. Your initial enrollment period generally begins three months before your 65th birthday month and continues for three months afterward. If you are still working or have employer coverage, your enrollment options may be different. Be sure to understand your situation before delaying Medicare.

67 — Full Retirement Age for Many For people born in 1960 or later, age 67 is full retirement age for Social Security. At full retirement age, you can receive your full retirement benefit and generally earn income from working without the Social Security earnings test reducing your benefits.

70 — Social Security Benefits Stop Increasing If you delay Social Security beyond full retirement age, your retirement benefit generally continues to increase through age 70 because of delayed retirement credits. There is generally no additional increase for waiting beyond 70. ~

What Happens If the Caregiver Can’t Give Care? (continued from page 30) make healthcare decisions, or Letters of Conservatorship, which gives the Conservator the ability to handle financial matters. In this case, since the Court oversees this process and ongoing finances, then the Guardian and Conservator have the final word, even if it means doing something different than what you want. How Do You Plan for This? The most important thing would be to execute your powers of attorney, because the person you appoint has priority to serve as your Guardian

or Conservator. This helps the person you trust the most if something terrible happens and you aren’t able to take care of yourself. Please see an elder law attorney to find out the best way to plan for your future. Nationwide, hear50 ALABAMA GULF COAST – FALL 2026-WINTER 2027

ing loss is affecting more Americans at younger ages—yet it can take up to seven years, on average, for someone to seek care for gradual hearing loss. Dr. Naro acknowledges the connection between hearing impairments and broader health issues, including the well-documented association with increased dementia risk. Research has revealed that untreated hearing loss is one of the most significant modifiable risk factors for cognitive decline. The earlier hearing loss is identified and managed, the better the outlook for sustained brain health. The skilled team at Naro Audiology utilizes precise diagnostic testing and the latest technology to identify and treat both hearing and balance concerns efficiently. By developing individualized treatment plans, they strive to not only restore hearing and equilibrium but also enhance each patient’s overall quality of life. Their commitment to cutting-edge solutions includes hearing aids, custom hearing protection, assistive listening devices, and programs in partnership with leading scientific organizations. Naro Audiology’s approach highlights the importance of proactive hearing care—not only for communication and social well-being, but also for its critical role in protecting cognitive health and reducing dementia risk. Advanced Wound Care at Home: Helping Seniors Heal With Confidence A wound that does not heal properly can affect much more than the skin. For seniors, chronic or non-healing wounds can lead to infection, complications, limited mobility, hospital visits and readmissions. Conditions such as diabetes, poor circulation, vascular disease and limited mobility can make healing especially challenging. Personic Health is changing the way advanced wound care is delivered by bringing specialized care directly to patients in their homes. This convenient approach allows seniors to receive expert wound care without the stress and difficulty of frequent trips to a healthcare facility. Personalized Wound Care in the Comfort of Home No two wounds—or patients—are exactly alike. Personic Health develops individualized treatment plans based on each patient’s condition, medical history and healing needs. Services may include comprehensive wound evaluations, serial wound debridements, molecular wound cultures, advanced wound care therapies and mobile diagnostic services. Personic Health also works closely with a patient’s healthcare team, including primary care providers, 64 ALABAMA GULF COAST – FALL 2026-WINTER 2027

specialists and home health agencies. This coordinated approach helps keep everyone informed and focused on the same goal: helping the wound heal while reducing the risk of complications.

At-Home Care that Improves Patient Outcomes Focused on Faster Healing and Better Outcomes Personic Health reports that its wounds heal 22% faster than the national average, with an average healing time of 50 days compared with 64 days nationally. Healing times vary depending on the type of wound and the individual patient. For example, Personic Health reports average healing times of 49 days for arterial ulcers, 63 days for diabetic ulcers, 55 days for pressure ulcers and 51 days for venous ulcers. Care That Comes to You For seniors who have difficulty traveling, receiving advanced wound care at home can provide greater convenience, comfort and peace of mind. Mobile services may also help patients access specialized care earlier,

HOUSING PLACEMENT/MOVING/TRANSITION

Paying for Senior Living: Understanding Your Options Choosing senior living is about more than finding the right community and level of care. Planning ahead can help reduce financial stress and avoid unexpected surprises. Does Medicare Pay for Senior Living? This is one of the most common questions families ask. Generally, Medicare does not pay for long-term residential senior living, including independent living, assisted living, memory care, or long-term custodial care. However, Medicare may cover certain medically necessary services, such as short-term skilled nursing, rehabilitation, physician-prescribed home health care, hospice care and certain medical equipment. Could Medicaid Help? Medicaid rules vary by state and depend on individual eligibility such as income, assets, medical needs and other state requirements. For qualified seniors, Medicaid may help with services in skilled nursing facilities, and certain assisted living communities through waiver programs, personal care and home and community-based services. Families should seek qualified guidance concerning Medicaid help.

What About Long-Term Care Insurance? If your loved one has long-term care insurance, the policy may help pay for assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, home health care or personal assistance. Every policy is different. Check the benefit amount, waiting period, benefit duration and eligibility requirements before assuming coverage will be available. Veterans May Have Additional Options Veterans and surviving spouses may qualify for benefits that can help offset care expenses. VA Aid and Attendance may provide monthly financial assistance to eligible veterans who need help with daily activities and meet applicable service, medical, income and asset requirements. Prime Senior Placement can connect families with trusted veteran benefit specialists who can help explain eligibility and the application process. Private Pay Resources Families may use retirement income, pensions, Social Security, investments, proceeds from a home sale, family contributions or, in some situations, a reverse mortgage.

VETERANS INFORMATION & SERVICES

HOME CARE

Home Care Services for Veterans Veterans who want to stay in their own home rather than move to a facility have several VA-run and VA-funded options. These range from a nurse or aide coming to the house, to a monthly budget a veteran controls directly, to cash benefits that help cover the cost of care. Medical and Personal Care at Home Home Based Primary Care sends a VA physician-led team to manage ongoing, complex medical needs for veterans who struggle to get to a clinic.

u

Skilled Home Health Care provides short-term nursing and therapy through a contracted home health agency for veterans.

u

Homemaker & Home Health Aide services send a nurse-supervised aide to help with bathing, dressing, meals, and other daily activities.

u

Adult Day Health Care and VA Telehealth (remote monitoring by phone, app, or video) round out dayto-day support, alongside palliative and hospice care for veterans with serious or terminal illness.

u

Caregiver Support Veteran Directed Care gives a veteran of any age a flexible monthly budget to hire the caregivers of their choice, including family members.

u

74 ALABAMA GULF COAST – FALL 2026-WINTER 2027

Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers (PCAFC) pays a monthly stipend, plus CHAMPVA coverage, training, and counseling, to a primary family caregiver of a veteran with a 70%+ disability rating who needs at least six months of continuous, in-person personal care and be enrolled in VA health care.

u

Respite Care pays for in-home relief or an adult day program so a family caregiver can take a break.

u

Financial Help and How to Start For 2026, the VA’s current rate for a Veteran with no dependents who qualifies for Aid & Attendance is $29,093 annually, which is about $2,424 per month. However, that is the maximum pension rate, not necessarily the amount every eligible Veteran receives. The actual payment generally depends on countable income and allowable medical expenses. To get started, a veteran or family member can contact the Geriatrics and Extended Care team at the nearest VA medical center, call the VA at 877-222-8387, or visit va.gov/geriatrics to be evaluated for eligibility and enrolled in the right combination of services. ~

HOME CARE

10 Fall Prevention Tips for Seniors at Home A simple misstep can lead to an injury that affects independence, confidence and quality of life. For older adults, falls are a serious concern, but falling is not a normal part of aging. Many falls can be prevented by making the home safer, staying active, reviewing medications and addressing changes in vision, balance or mobility.

3

Whether you are looking out for your own safety or helping an aging loved one remain independent at home, these 10 practical tips can help reduce fall risks and support safer, more confident living.

Improve Lighting Throughout the Home Good lighting can make it easier to see steps, uneven flooring and other hazards. Use bright, evenly distributed lighting throughout the home. Place nightlights in hallways, bedrooms and bathrooms, and keep a lamp within easy reach of the bed. Light switches should be easy to access when entering a room.

1

4

2

5

Clear the Clutter Keep hallways, stairways and frequently used walkways free of boxes, cords, shoes, pet toys and other objects. Even small items can become tripping hazards. Keeping pathways clear also makes it easier for family members, caregivers or emergency responders to move through the home when needed.

Remove or Secure Loose Rugs Throw rugs can easily shift or curl at the edges, creating a significant tripping hazard. Consider removing rugs from high-traffic areas, especially bathrooms, kitchens and entryways. If a rug is necessary, use a properly fitted non-slip backing and make sure the edges lie flat.

76 ALABAMA GULF COAST – FALL 2026-WINTER 2027

Install Grab Bars and Handrails Bathrooms are especially important areas for fall prevention. Install sturdy grab bars near toilets and inside or outside showers and tubs. Stairways should have secure handrails. A healthcare professional or occupational therapist can help determine where additional supports may be useful. Wear Supportive, Well-Fitting Shoes Loose slippers, socks without grips and worn-out shoes can make walking less stable. Choose comfortable shoes that fit properly and provide good support and traction. Wearing appropriate footwear indoors can be just as important as wearing it outside.

RESOURCES FOR AGING WELL

6

Review Medications Regularly Some prescription medications, over-the-counter medicines and combinations of medications can cause dizziness, drowsiness or changes in blood pressure. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to review all medications regularly. Never stop or change a medication without first discussing it with a healthcare professional.

10

7

Signs It May Be Time for Extra Help

Keep Vision and Hearing Checked Regular vision exams can identify changes that may make it difficult to see obstacles, steps or uneven surfaces. Keeping eyeglass prescriptions current is also important. Talk with your healthcare provider about any changes in hearing, balance or dizziness.

8

Create Wide, Clear Pathways Arrange furniture so there is plenty of room to walk comfortably. Avoid narrow spaces that require sharp turns or navigating around furniture. Think about the routes used most often—from the bedroom to the bathroom, kitchen and living room— and make sure these pathways are easy to navigate.

9

Build Strength and Balance Staying physically active can help support strength, flexibility and balance. Activities designed for older adults, such as appropriate strength and balance exercises, may help reduce fall risk. Talk with your healthcare provider before beginning a new exercise program, especially if you have health or mobility concerns.

Use Mobility Aids Consistently Canes, walkers and other mobility devices are designed to provide stability and support. Using them only occasionally may increase risk if they are needed for safe walking. Make sure a mobility aid is properly fitted, and ask a healthcare professional for guidance on using it correctly.

FALL PREVENTION TIPS

SENIORS Blue Book

While occasional slips or moments of unsteadiness can happen to anyone, recurring balance issues or increasing concerns about falling shouldn’t be ignored. Early intervention often makes it easier to address risks before a fall occurs. The following signs may indicate that additional support, home modifications, or a conversation with a healthcare provider could be beneficial. Multiple falls in the past year Difficulty getting up from a chair u I ncreasing use of walls or furniture for support u S kipping activities because of fear of falling u M edication-related dizziness u U se mobility aids consistently. u u
