As a Veteran, I know what it means to get results. Hard work, persistence & passion is what drives my work ethic. Let me put my expertise to work for you today.

When planning care for a loved one, it can often be difficult, stressful and confusing to understand what care is truly needed. It doesn’t have to be.

Senior Helpers® now makes it easier for families to truly understand the care their loved ones need with our exclusive Senior Helpers LIFE ProfileTM (Life, Independence, Function, Evaluation). Our unique LIFE Profile is a data-driven assessment tool that provides a holistic view of the risks, needs, and factors that influence the ability to age at home.

Based on more than 15 years of research, Senior Helpers LIFE Profile has been shown to improve overall quality of life, reduce hospitalization risk and support successful aging at home.

The Senior Helpers LIFE Profile helps you answer the following questions:

1. What activities can my loved one reliably do on their own?

2. Where and when is assistance needed?

3. What are the critical things I need to know to help keep my loved one safe at home?

The Senior Helpers LIFE Profile is a comprehensive assessment that reviews the five key factors that are most important for successful aging: Safety Independence

Senior Helpers uses the data and information gathered through the LIFE Profile to create a customized Senior Helpers SmartCare PlanTM This is an actionable and measurable plan of care that is specifically tailored to your loved one’s needs.

The Senior Helpers SmartCare Plan is your blueprint to schedule, manage and direct care activities for your loved one based on his or her specific needs. It is used to provide direction to our caregivers and measure to your loved one’s progress so we can adjust the care provided and further improve the potential for successful aging at home – the place they want to live!

Start with the Heart: Identifying the Right People to Care for our Future

Having worked with unlicensed professional Caregivers in Assisted Living and Home Care settings for the past 24 years, I’d like to say “I’ve seen it all”, but the severe shortage we’re experiencing among the post-acute care services now is unprecedented, and frankly worrisome.

A recent Article on the CareerPlug site states: “The labor market is undergoing a massive readjustment… In fact, about 2 million women have stopped looking for work since the pandemic began. This is most acutely felt in industries like home health care, where women make up a significant portion of the workforce.”

“Caregiver”, “Personal Care Attendant”, “Resident Assistant” are just some of the names that organization use to describe one type of employee – the lay person (usually not certified or licensed) who will work in a private home or home-like setting, assisting one or many adults (mostly seniors) with their Activities of Daily Living (ADLs). ADLs are defined as grooming, bathing, eating, toileting, walking, and taking medications. There’s more to it, of course. These employees also end up providing residents/clients with companionship, entertainment activities, comfort, a sense of safety, and in many ways help them to have meaningful days. And while ADLs are obviously very important to meet one’s basic needs, the latter is what makes these jobs fulfilling for the employees.

When we’re looking for new staff, it’s fantastic to find highly capable, professional care staff, with many years of experience, vast knowledge, and handfuls of reference letters! The reality is, those folks are likely already working a full-time job (or two) and are not looking for work right now. So, organizations must get creative and dig a little deeper.

In recruiting for these valuable positions, I’ve always said “Start with the Heart, skills

can be taught.” Some of the best caregiving staff I’ve hired are adults who have had some experience providing care for a family member, and realized when that was over that they missed it. As arduous as it can be to care for a loved one, the experience can change the way a person sees the world. One starts to appreciate the little things, like emotionally connecting with the care recipient, and the sense of pride and accomplishment that comes with affecting their life and seeing them thrive or overcome illness, or even pass away in peace and comfort. Often times, a family caregiver does not want to return to their old job or industry. It doesn’t feel as rewarding to them as it used to, why would it?

CareerPlug’s aforementioned article also says that the way to get good people to work for you is to include compensation and benefits in the job posting. And I’m not arguing that, but what if we included the softer benefits too? Perhaps we are looking at an entirely new workforce in the post-acute care industry. What if the ad mentions that we are looking for people who want to help others have meaningful days? You can always learn the direct skills, but we can’t teach someone how to truly care about another human being.

If you’ve been a family caregiver, or taken care of your neighbor, or helped that gentlemen from church, you may be ready for a more rewarding career! Pay is becoming more competitive as the market changes. Organizations may offer flexible schedules in order to hire the right people. Giving of ourselves to better someone else’s life FEELS GOOD! Service of others feeds our own souls. Why not get paid for it? Consider a job in an Assisted Living or Home Care, and go home at the end of a shift feeling full!

What is affordable housing?

The Low Income Housing Tax Credit program is managed by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Through the program, owners of multi-family homes designate as tax credit properties, to low-income residents for a reduced rent. Senior apartments that advertise the word ‘affordable’ are generally tax credit apartment communities. You will also often see the words “Income Limit Restrictions Apply" Each tax credit senior apartment community has different income requirements so it's important to ask when contacting them.

These communities have many of the same amenities as the 55 & 62+ communities, some are resort style pool, movie theatre, library, exercise room, social activities.

Why would I want to sell my house and move into an Active Adult 55+ Community?

We hear this question all the time from active adults and seniors. Many do not see the benefit of selling their house and moving into an active adult 55+ community.

Many of the reasons are:

“This is my home I have lived here for ___ number of years, and I raised my children in this house.”

“My house is paid for.”

“It cost so much money to live in a community, how can I afford to live there?”

“What am I going to do with all of the stuff I have accumulated over the years?”

“I am still too young and healthy.”

Below is a cost of living comparison worksheet that will help you calculate costs to see how independent living compares favorably to the cost of maintaining a home. Each community offers different pricing, call and schedule a tour at couple of the communities in your area, they can provide the information you need to calculate and compare costs.

3 Questions to Ask Your Doctor About Exercise

Are you considering adding exercise to your daily routine or signi cantly increasing your level of activity? Talk to your doctor about the exercises and physical activities that are best for you. During your appointment, you can ask:

1. Are there any exercises or activities I should avoid? Your doctor can make recommendations based on your health history, keeping in mind any recent surgeries or ongoing health conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, or heart disease. This would be a great time to check with your doctor about any unexplained symptoms you’ve been experiencing, such as chest pain or pressure, joint pain, dizziness, or shortness of breath. Your doctor may recommend postponing exercise until the problem is diagnosed and treated.

2. Is my preventive care up to date? Your doctor can tell you if there are any tests you might need. For example, women over age 65 should be checked regularly for osteoporosis.

3. How does my health condition a ect my ability to exercise? Some health conditions can a ect your exercise routine. For example, people with arthritis may need to avoid some types of activity, especially when joints are swollen or in amed. Those with diabetes may need to adjust their daily schedule, meal plan, or medications when planning their activities. Your doctor can talk to you about any adjustments you need to make to ensure that you get the most out of your new exercise routine.
