Coronavirus outbreak impacting local business BY CHRIS BONANNO As is the case throughout the world, interests in Brevard are being dramatically impacted by the spread of COVID-19. Brevard County Emergency Management has declared a state of emergency, which in practical terms means that the county has additional organizational capabilities and can divert more funds toward dealing with the outbreak. Prior to the declaration that schools would be shuttered for weeks after Spring Break, Brevard Public Schools assistant superintendent Matt Reed said that students would begin remote learning on March 30, with computers doled out to students who don’t have them. “The good news for students is we’re going to be ready,” said Reed, who also noted that Spectrum would provide free internet for those who didn’t have it at home. “We are planning to keep kids educated. There will be some sort of way to take attendance. They will get lessons. Work will get
graded, students will get graded and there will be report cards and transcripts at the end. And students, we’re going to keep them on track to get to the next grade or graduate.” Many local businesses also felt the pinch of the outbreak.

Businesses that didn’t outright shut down have curtailed their hours with entities associated with The Avenue Viera and Walmart among the more prominent commercial interests to do so. There are ways people can lower their risks for contracting the virus, according to Anita Stremmel, a spokesperson for the Florida Department of Health. Stremmel advised that people should wash their hands after going to the bathroom, eating and blowing their nose.

Additionally, she stated that if soap and water aren’t available, using an alcoholbased hand sanitizer with at least 60 percent alcohol will suffice. She also stated that anyone that thinks they might have symptoms should call the county’s health department at
321-454-7101. Stremmel also noted that persons experiencing symptoms should “consult a health care provider as soon as possible” and that they should be advised if they have symptoms prior to going in. Stremmel also advised that wearing a surgical mask can help reduce the number

Life changes inevitable during coronavirus outbreak BY CHRIS BONANNO Even if it wasn’t immediately noticeable in parts of Viera and Suntree, everyone has had their lives dramatically impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak worldwide. That can be seen in the cases of Denise and Larry Mathis of Viera. Larry Mathis, who also was off work this week due to the outbreak, was slated to have surgery but it was canceled because it was considered not essential. Beyond that, the couple was slated to go on a cruise. “We haven't been going out, because we're following the guidelines that the president asked everybody to do. We've been staying home except for going to the grocery store," said Denise Mathis, who noted they’ve “gone maybe once or twice a
week to Publix or Walmart if we needed something." John Maita of Viera had to postpone a cruise that was scheduled for the near future. I ust got finished trimming bushes outside and I've been reading stuff that's been going on the internet. That's about it. Watch a little TV, fish a little bit, wash the car," Maita said. “The only time I've gone out is when I went to the grocery store days ago and picked up some stuff that I needed." Despite the difficult circumstances, some, including those with children in the area are making the best of a tough situation. Chance Cedik, 9, and 7-year-old Scarlett Cedik drew inspirational messages in chalk on the sidewalk of their home
in the Auburn Lakes subdivision on March 21. The drawings included messages asking people to stay healthy and wash their hands along with imagery that included a rainbow and the sun. “The kids came up with some really good ideas just to spread happiness right now because we know a lot of people are worried,” said Courtney Cedik, Chance and Scarlett’s mother, who said they were inspired after seeing others discussing the idea on the online networking site NextDoor. “We thought it would make people … less scared of the coronavirus,” added Scarlett Cedik. Elsewhere in the subdivision, the Otermat family was trying to keep things loose as Nicole and Derek, along with their two children, 8-year-old

Statistics show Viera roundabout safer than thought BY GEORGE WHTE The infamous Viera roundabout, which debuted in 2003 at the intersection of North Wickham Road and Lake Andrew Drive, is an example of a modern roundabout designed to slow driver speeds and reduce the overall number and severity of crashes. The only problem, which comes up all too often, is many drivers do not understand the proper way to use the roundabout designed for traffic entering the circle to oin traffic already in the circle into a one-way counterclockwise flow. Conventional intersections have 32 vehicle and 16 pedestrian conflict points, while roundabouts have only eight vehicle and eight pedestrian conflict points. Because there are no crossing movements in a roundabout, left-turn and right-angle crashes are eliminated. Statewide, roundabouts have been proven to reduce the number of fatal and severe injury crashes by 82 percent at a stop-controlled intersection, and 78 percent at a signalized intersection, according to the website AlertTodayFlorida.com.

According to the Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization, there were no serious injuries or fatalities in crashes at the Viera roundabout from 2 1 to 2 1 .
During the five-year period from 2015 to 2019, there were 219 crashes within the roundabout and 100 feet on the approaching ramps. However, there were no serious injuries or fatalities in any of those crashes, according to Kim Smith, the education and safety coordinator for the Space Coast Transportation
Planning Organization. “That is an important designation, as it is a benefit of a roundabout. When crashes occur, they are typically low speed and injuries and damage to vehicles are typically far less severe,’’ she said. Here are some tips on traveling the Viera roundabout:

Coronavirus pandemic leaves high school athletes in limbo BY CARL KOTALA Viera High School’s Davis Mallinger was enjoying an incredible track season and gearing up for spring football. Claire Jackering and her Holy Trinity softball teammates were off to the best start in program history. And Viera’s Karyana Mitchell, Alan Espinal and Brianna Staerk were all dreaming of getting back to the playoffs in their respective sports. But that’s all on hold now. With Florida schools closed to students until at least April 15 due to the coronavirus pandemic, high school sports have been suspended and players have been left in limbo, wondering if they will play anymore games. “I understand the magnitude of the issue our country is facing, but honestly, I’m pretty mad about it,” Mallinger said. Maybe a little selfish, but my track season was off to a pretty good start.” In fact, Mallinger can lay claim to being Brevard County’s fastest man, boasting

the top times in the 100 meters (10.54), 200 meters (a school record 21.57) and 400 meters (49.72). Without access to the school weight room, or his local gym, the junior has been working out in his garage and working with his AAU track coach, Tyrone Giscombe, three or four times a week. Jackering is doing some work in her garage, too, hitting off a tee. “I’m doing what I can, with what I have,” she said. Holy Trinity’s softball team was off to a 9-1 start and not only looking to win a district championship, but possibly make a long postseason run after dropping from Class 5A to Class 2A. “It was the best start of a season we’ve ever had,” Jackering said of receiving the news her season had been suspended. “It was kind of disappointing not knowing how it would end up. … We had high hopes for the end of the season. Now, we don’t really know.” Mitchell, a senior, led

Viera’s softball team to the state final four two years ago. Last year, the Hawks reached the regional final. This was supposed to be the year they won it all. “Truthfully, I did not comprehend that the game against Bayside (on March 12) could have been my last game of the season,” Mitchell said. “I thought I would be back at it for practice that next Monday, returning to my normal routine. “The interruption of the season definitely hit me all at once and made me realize that you can never take the moments on the field with your team for granted because in the blink of an eye, it could be over.” Mitchell said Viera coach Alex Breeden’s message was simple: “Our coach’s message to me was to keep working and control what I could control. She told all of us to keep our heads high and have a glimmer of hope that we can continue to do what we do best,” Mitchell said.
She has been running in the morning, lifting weights and pitching to her father in their backyard. Espinal, one of 11 seniors on this year’s Viera baseball team, said he and teammates Ethan Huffman and Liam Samuels have been hitting the field every day. ast year’s team reached the regional final and was hoping to get to the final four. “This senior year is something I would never get to experience ever in my life with this group of guys,” Espinal said. “They’ve been absolutely family to me and my brother (Edian) and this troubles me because I have such a strong bond with them and this is all going away. We didn’t even get to finish our season. Staerk, whose Viera girls lacrosse team has won three consecutive district titles, said her teammates were upset when their season was suspended, particularly seniors Tristen Chang, Maddy Murawski and Gabrielle Echevarria. ‘If we are going back (after)
April 15, my mom (Coach Alison Staerk) said we might be able to push back some of the games and still be able to play them,” Brianna Staerk said. In the meantime, she has been going to a field near her boyfriend’s house to try to get some work in, though he is not a lacrosse player. “He throws the ball over my head a lot,” Brianna Staerk said. “I have to run to go get it.” With district playoffs originally scheduled to start in mid-April, there’s a chance spring sports can be saved if students return to school on April 16. And with spring football not even set to begin until April 27, there’s hope for that, too. That’s something everyone involved in high school sports would really like to see happen. “Day in and day out, I’ve been thinking about if we are going to get back out there and put on that Viera uniform again,” Espinal said. “I just ask for one more game, one more game with my brothers.”VV

New coaches, high expectations for Viera lacrosse teams BY CARL KOTALA A number of things have changed for the Viera High School boys and girls lacrosse teams this season. High expectations, however, remain the same. While both teams have new coaches, they also have new districts and new regions after the FHSAA expanded lacrosse from one classification into two classes. Viera is now in Class 2A. “We absolutely should be the favorites to win our district, first-year boys coach Bo Bartlett said. “I know Vero Beach will probably have something to say about that. But we have the potential. Viera’s boys, off to an 8-2 start, certainly had the look of a state-level contender, combining a potent offense with a quality defense. “We have a lot of fast players that can run up and down the field, unior cocaptain Gavin Wessel said. “We have a lot of endurance.

I wanted the girls to be able to play together, count on each other and be truly a team. I think we’ve gotten there.” VV

Viera football looking to address key positions this spring BY CARL KOTALA Aside from seeing how much bigger and stronger players have gotten after a few months in the weight room, one of the best parts about spring football is seeing how well some guys can step into bigger roles. That’s certainly the case for the Viera Hawks, who will have several spots to fill when spring practice opens. “Going into spring, I think our first test is going to be looking at how C.J. Simms handles the quarterback position,” Viera coach Derek Smith said. “He had an opportunity to play for us in a few games last year due to an injury and I think he played very solid in those games. He showed he has the potential to be a very good quarterback. e’s gained the confidence of his teammates during offseason workouts and throwing the ball around with these guys. I’m very confident he’s going to fill the role for us at quarterback.” Simms, a rising junior, will have some dangerous weapons around him and an experienced line in front of him.

Viera tennis teams boast young, talented players BY CARL KOTALA With plenty of young talent on the roster, the future bodes well for both the Viera High School boys and girls tennis teams. However, don’t count the Hawks out of this season just yet. “We’ve always been one of the teams to beat in Brevard County,” Viera boys coach Manuel Rosales said. “This year, I have two to three really good players and the rest of the team are more development kind of players. “This year, we’ve had a little bit more of a challenge than in past years because
I had three seniors who graduated last year. It’s kind of a young team.” With seniors riffin Lamp and Ben Gust at the top of the lineup, the Hawks certainly have a chance to claim their sixth straight district championship. But they will need help from the rest of the lineup that includes junior Zak Sedaros, sophomores Rahul Ghosh and Nimai Zipp along with junior Louis Schiffer. Viera’s district has been shaken up a little bit this year with the additions of Gateway, Harmony and St. Cloud to a list of opponents that already included
Bayside, Eau Gallie, Heritage and Melbourne. But that shouldn’t stop the Hawks from being competitive when the district tournament comes around later this month. “It’s going to be a challenge,” Rosales said. While the boys team has many of its younger players in the lower half of its roster, the Viera girls are loaded with talented youth at the top. Freshmen Sunshine Reitz and Lavanya Natarajan play in the No. 1 and 2 spots, followed by sophomore transfers Eva Nastevska and Teya Hagy.
Senior team captain Morgan Bentley plays in the No. 5 spot and was off to a 7-0 start on the season. Although Viera lost a close one to Melbourne in a regular-season encounter earlier this season, two of the matches went to tiebreakers, giving the Hawks plenty of hope they’ll be able to turn the tables at the district tournament. “Having these two young ninth graders is challenging, but the future for us looks really good,” Viera girls coach Shelly Rosseau said. “I’m optimistic that we’ll win (districts) as a team, and I’m hoping my No. 1 will win, too.”
Rosseau described Reitz as the kind of player who can be a tough matchup for several reasons: “She returns everything,” Rosseau said. “She’s been down several times and she comes back. She never gives up. She’s like a backboard back there. Everything comes back.” Note: At press time, all prep sports in Brevard County and throughout the state were suspended because of the coronavirus through at least April 15. There was no word yet on when — or if — play would be allowed to resume. V V

Teaching German earns VCS educator European scholarship BY EDWIN MARTIN
When Courtney Lee decided to introduce German to middle school students, she never imagined that the decision would lead her back to the country where she first learned the language. Lee, a World Languages teacher at Viera Charter School, is the winner of the Goethe Institute’s 2020 Professional Development Scholarship for teachers of German. Lee will spend two weeks studying German language and culture at one of the 16 Goethe Institutes in Germany. As a first-year language teacher, I am incredibly grateful that Viera Charter School has such a dedicated and supportive World Language department,” said Lee, who has taught a variety of subjects for many years. “We have been consistently supported by the administration as we
seek out new professional development opportunities. This continued professional development supports the VCS World Language department vision of becoming the best World Language department in the state of Florida.” Students brim with excitement when talking of why they picked the elective. “Last year, Frau (Mrs.) Alfonzo taught us German and I fell in love with it,” sixth-grader Olivia Murray said of the German language that was taught as an elementary school weekly activity. Another beginning German student, Drew Huffman, said, “having friends in class while learning German” made the class fun, makes him better at it and more willing to try speaking it frequently. Viera High’s Luciano wins state award for DAR essay
BY EDWIN MARTIN Viera High School senior Keven Luciano has accomplished something no one in Brevard County had done in 88 years Luciano was presented last month with the firstplace award in the Florida State Society Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award and Scholarship contest. e is the first student from the local Melbourne chapter, the Abigail Wright Chamberlin Chapter, NSDAR (National Society Daughters of the American Revolution) to ever win the state award. The Abigail Wright Chamberlain Chapter was formed on Nov. 30, 1932. “For me, it’s nice that I do get to be recognized in this way,” Luciano said. “Even if I wasn’t recognized for it, I’m still happy that I get to be a leader in my community and that I get to have these opportunities to inspire others to be good citizens. “This acknowledgement, it does mean a lot to me. I do try my best to exemplify the values the good citizenship values that the Daughters of the American Revolution have.” Those values include:

part of the school’s marching and concert bands. In order to be part of the DAR competition, he had to first be nominated by a vote from the Viera High faculty, He received a $100 scholarship for winning the
district award and a $250 scholarship for his win at the state competition. Luciano also is entered to win the Southeast region award, which would put him in the national competition. The award is based on
an essay. Students were given a maximum word limit of 550 and had two hours to complete their writing based on a prompt they were shown just moments before. The prompt was about re-energizing the youth of America to become good citizens and how the student could play a part in that. “I explained an idea I had, based on reading, on making some sort of event where people can come up and talk about what it means to be a good citizen, or what they see in America — what are problems — and making that event something that is social because in terms of change happening, there has to be some sort of social background,” Luciano said. “I looked at history to prove that in my essay. I looked at Franklin Delano oosevelt, his fireside chats during the Great Depression. That was him just talking to citizens about what needs to change. “That sort of sparked all the New Deal policies that really helped the Great Depression turn around and helped America get out of that slump.” VV Note: Edwin Martin is a student writer from Viera Charter School.

Cocoa police dogs, handlers compete on national TV BY CHRIS BONANNO Two of the Cocoa Police Department’s top dogs and their handlers had an opportunity to show off their skills recently on national television. Officer Dan hoades, with 9 ear and Officer Brian Delos Santos, with K9 Kyra, recently participated on the “America’s Top Dog” show on the A&E Network, which features K9s and their handlers from around the country.

Rhoades and Bear, a 6-year-old German Shepherd, appeared on A&E on Jan. 15, and the duo was able to claim victory after the episode’s competition. “It was an amazing experience to participate in this,” Rhoades said in a release from the department. “Bear did an amazing job and I am so proud of him. We are honored to have been selected. I’m happy to be able to shine a light on the important role of police K9s

Bear joined the department in 2014 and is trained to help find missing persons, track suspects who are fleeing and to find illegal drugs and evidence in criminal cases, the police department reports. Kyra, who was born in
Hungary and donated to the department in 2018 by the Grace Roberti Foundation, can serve in the patrol and SWAT units and is trained in drug detection. She also is the department’s first female police dog. The CPD adds that all costs associated with the department personnel’s participation in “America’s Top Dog, filmed in California, were paid for by Big Fish Entertainment, which produces the show. VV

Dog est, which benefits Canine Companions for Independence, is a national family- and dog-friendly event. Money is raised to support and celebrate the love of dogs and the bonds shared when training service dogs. These service dogs are provided free of charge to people with disabilities. Karen Londos, the 2020 event chair and a local real estate agent, was born with a degenerative hearing impairment. In January 2016, she was matched up with Ninja, a Golden Retriever hearing dog from Canine Companions. “If I have the opportunity to help change someone’s life, like how Ninja has changed mine, it’s a priceless feeling,’’ she said. The program provides specially bred dogs and skilled companions such as Ninja and others for different conditions; facility dogs for visits inside hospitals and nursing homes; and dogs to help veterans and others with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). It gives potential dog recipients a chance to learn about the program and its volunteers and to be placed on the waiting list for a dog. Some of the recipients keep in touch with the folks that initially raised their dogs before an additional six months of additional training
to help with specific needs, Londos said. The concept of assistance dogs for people with physical disabilities began with Canine Companions for Independence in 1975. Pinecrest Academy still on target for August opening Despite the COVID-19 outbreak, the Pinecrest Academy Space Coast Charter School, which is under construction at 7550 Stadium Parkway, is still set to open in August, according to school principal Sylvia Mijuskovic. “The construction (of the school) is so far along, that I don't think there's going to be any negative impact," said Mijuskovic, who was formerly the principal at Space Coast Junior/Senior High School and has 34 years of experience in education in Brevard and Miami-Dade counties. Mijuskovic said the school, the exterior of which is a very light gray, will feature halls that have a contrasting blue with classrooms that feature a lighter, baby-blue color. The school will have classes for kindergarten through second grade on the first floor and third grade and up on the second floor. It will have purple and white as its school colors, which already are prominent on the school’s website. “Having that creativity, fle ibility to make it my own has been kind of neat,” Mijuskovic said. Beyond the aesthetics, the school’s mission, according to
its brochures will focus “on a rigorous curriculum with an emphasis on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) disciplines, enhanced by a Spanish dual language program that will create biliterate citizens.” "The community is so excited with the duallanguage and STEM component," Mijuskovic said. However, there are other facets to the opening of the school that have been impacted due to the outbreak. “I had a lot of community events planned to market the school, PR the school,” Mijuskovic said. “I held a job fair where I had more than 50 teachers come to learn about that school. Now, I have to do Skype interviews because you can't get together.” Ultimately, Mijuskovic intends to hire between 25 and 30 faculty members with other hires coming for staff as well, she said. Mijuskovic also notes that she’s hoping to have seventhand eighth-grade students for the upcoming school year, but that she needs 50 of each to register to be able to make that a reality. “Right now, it would appear that I will be able to include a seventh grade,” Mijuskovic said. “… Eighth grade is still

Partnership allows for virtual travels for hospice patients, families BY CHLOE HO A partnership between Wuesthoff Brevard Hospice & Palliative Care and a Cleveland-based company is set to allow local hospice patients to virtually visit dream destinations. Wuesthoff has partnered with Flight to Remember oundation, a non-profit organization that specializes in recording videos from drones, to provide memories for families of patients that are either at home or in hospice care and are unable to travel. We really believe in final wishes,” said Wuesthoff
Brevard Hospice & Palliative Care executive director Sara Beil. “Let’s take a patient to the beach, let’s take a patient to the zoo.” The drones are able to take videos from either local places or far-away locations with Flight to Remember, according to Beil. Drone videos have been taken in places such as Las Vegas, Arizona’s Grand Canyon and even Europe. “They get the footage, whether it’s grandma’s backyard or that one special place they wanted to go,” Beil said. Beil said the videos normally cost about $200,

The other is located off U.S. 1 in Rockledge. “I’ve got to tell you, we are very excited, very happy with the way that Viera has welcomed us into the community,” Frazier said. “It’s been awesome. Everybody at The Avenue has been great to work with. We’re really looking forward to that store doing very well and even looking further into wherever our next
store might pop up.” Frazier added that those who want to purchase products, but don’t want to come inside one of the stores due to the COVID-19 outbreak can still do so at this point by calling ahead and placing an order. Volunteers sought to sew facial masks BY ERNEST ARICO A disaster relief group called Sew You Care is looking for volunteers to help make fabric face masks for health care professionals during the coronavirus pandemic. According to Jessy Gillespie of Bossier City, Louisiana, the founder of the organization, she is seeking volunteers to make the masks because of the shortage at hospitals and other health-care facilities. So far, she has about 325 volunteers making the masks. “We are being contacted directly by hospitals, doctors and nurses to make these masks,” she said. Gillespie, who has worked on several disaster relief projects in the past, said anyone interested in volunteering is asked to go to the organization’s website — sewyoucare.com. Once you go to the website, volunteers are then directed to the group’s Facebook page to fill out a form. As of March 23, Gillespie said volunteers have made more than 3,000 masks. Once
completed, the masks are mailed to needy hospitals, doctors and nurses, as well as the elderly and children. “We are not recommending volunteers drop off the masks at hospitals,” she said. According to Universal Medical’s website, wearing a face mask will help prevent the spread of infection and prevent the individual from contracting any airborne infectious germs. When someone coughs, talks or sneezes, they could release germs into the air that might infect others nearby. Face masks are part of an infection control strategy to eliminate cross-contamination. Before wearing a face mask, • Always wash your hands with soap and water before touching the face mask. • Remove the mask from the dispenser or box and make sure the masks do not have any holes or tears. • Make sure you determine which side is the top and which is the front of the

In 1970, people saw the environment as something outside of themselves. Today, experts say, people are more aware. They realize the environment includes everyone’s home.

For hundreds of years, some people have been concerned about the environment. They called this concern conservation. They were worried about conserving, or saving, our planet’s resources. But until Earth Day, these conservationists were in the minority. In 1962, a scientist, Rachel Carson Rachel Carson, published a book called “Silent Spring.” She caught everyone’s attention with her accounts of birds dying from pesticides. She warned that people were in danger, too.
Young people lead
Sen. Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin thought it was possible to organize the nation to clean up our planet. In 1970, he recruited Denis Hayes to organize the first Earth Day. Hayes was a student at Harvard University. He asked thousands of volunteers, mostly students, to plan events to be held all over the country. Organizers picked April 22 because
most colleges would be on spring break. This meant students would be able to work at the Earth Day events.
The power of people
Hayes and student volunteers got the word out by mailings and phone calls. There was no internet to spread the message to a lot of people at once. More than 20 million Americans took part in that first Earth Day. Students from about 2,000 colleges and 10,000 elementary and high schools rallied for our planet.
Earth Day at 50
This year, the theme is Climate Action. Earth Day organizers believe climate change is the biggest challenge to the future of people and the life systems that allow us to live on Earth. One part of Earth Day will be the Earth Challenge 2020. Organizers hope to involve 1 million people around the globe in collecting data about air quality, water quality, pollution and human health.

One of the best things you can do to understand the environment is to go outside. Experts say kids and adults are now spending about 90 percent of their time indoors. Just going outside can help us see our world differently. Many students across the country are helping to turn their schools green. Students are doing everything from raising money for solar panels for their schools to changing the lightbulbs to energy-saving bulbs.

It’s easy to get involved with Earth Day. You can go to earthday.org to get ideas. For example, you can organize a cleanup of a local area and register it with Earth Day. Do you have a recycling program at your school? If you don’t, maybe you could start one.

Chateau Madeleine increases activities, restricts access to residents
BY R. NORMAN MOODY The coronavirus pandemic pushed many into social distancing. For some senior living facilities such as Chateau Madeleine Senior Living and Memory Care, that has meant allowing only essential personnel on its campus in order to protect residents. “There are a lot of things going on with seniors and lockdown,” said Eric Hardoon, the executive director of Chateau Madeleine. “Depression could set in.” But Chateau Madeleine is not about to let boredom and depression set in with residents at its modern, new facility in Suntree. It has increased the number of activities and events to keep residents involved, entertained and happy. He said residents are well cared for physically and that their mental well being is very important. Every available personnel has been recruited to help with stepping up events and activities for residents.

“We are big into getting our residents involved in our activities and events,” Hardoon said. He has taken extraordinary steps to make sure residents are well at a time when contact must be restricted to protect them from the COVID-19 virus. In addition, the facility is using its website, social media and a photo sharing site so family members will see and know what is happening with their loved ones at Chateau Madeleine. Family members and friends can go to suntreeseniorliving. com or to the facility’s Facebook site. Photos are being uploaded through Smugmug.com so photos can be shared with family. “If they want to do video conferencing, we’ll set it up,” Hardoon said. The company dedicates a portion of each payload to accommodate them, according to O’Connor. Customers inscribe a small aluminum plaque with their name and a message. It is then sent into space. They can stay involved — from start to finish — through regular
communications about the launch and progress of their AstroGram. It includes a live stream of the launch where permitted, as well as other communications. Following the launch, customers are sent certificates signed by the launch director and Duke and a copy of the manifest to prove that the AstroGrams were carried aboard the rocket or sent back from the space station. The inaugural AstroGrams launch flew aboard a Firefly Alpha rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. Other launches are expected this year from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, he said. Companies have offered to fly cremains as a space memorial for many years, including Celestis, a Houston-based company created in 1994. To date, AstroGrams and its offerings and economy remain unique in the market, according to O’Connor. The cost of AstroGrams starts at $99 to $198, depending on the destination. That’s great, but what is a baffle bo and what does it do Rain washes trash, grass clippings, road dust, fertilizer and other waste into the stormwater system. It then empties into the Indian iver agoon. affle boxes help clean up this stormwater by capturing much of this contamination. They are underground structures with multiple chambers and screens that skim off floating debris, allow heavier material to settle and reduce the

nitrogen and phosphorous loading in the water. The recent news has been about the Cliff Creek baffle bo being installed on the river side of U.S. 1, just south of Lake Washington Road. It is made of concrete measuring 25 feet wide, 20 feet long and 15 feet deep. It will serve a 515-acre drainage basin bounded roughly by Stewart Road to the west, Sweetwood Drive to the north and downtown Eau Gallie to the south.
The processed water will flow beneath Pineapple Boulevard and into the river. Construction should be completed by late May. In addition to eliminating most debris, it is expected to extract 3,400 pounds of nitrogen and 830 pounds of phosphorous from the water entering the lagoon annually. The City of Melbourne will service the unit on a schedule that varies according to rain.
The Cliff Creek unit will be jointly funded by the City of Melbourne and the Save Our Indian River Lagoon Trust Fund. It will cost more than $715,000. During the past five years, Melbourne has installed seven smaller baffle bo es and has recently opened bids for construction of the Otter Creek unit. It will serve a roughly 300-acre area encompassing Sherwood
Park and surrounding neighborhoods. Other Brevard County communities also are installing baffle bo es to help clean up their stormwaters that flow into the lagoon.
