Seguin Crossing on track to open this Fall

Retail center to debut in time for holiday season

(Seguin) -- Seguin’s largest retail project in years is still on track to welcome shoppers just in time for the 2025 holiday season. Providing the latest on the project is Josh Schneuker, executive director of the Seguin

Economic Development Corporation. Schneuker says construction crews are making steady progress at the Seguin Crossing site, located just east of Starbucks along IH-10. Crossing, pg. 2

McQueeney crash claims life over the weekend

(McQueeney) -- A 64-year-old man was killed Saturday night following a single-vehicle crash in Guadalupe County.

At approximately 10:23 p.m., deputies with the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office responded to the intersection of Terminal Loop Road and Raydon Lane for reports of a collision.

Upon arriving at the scene, deputies located the driver, identified as John

Henry Stephens. The 64-yearold was found unresponsive and not breathing inside a 2014 Dodge Ram pickup. Despite life saving measures, Stephens was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators believe Stephens had been traveling east on Terminal Loop Road when the crash occurred. The accident remains under investigation by The Texas Department of Public Safety.

“The Seguin Crossing retail development that is currently under construction –everything ---remains on schedule and the developer and the retailers that in tow with this project are still anticipating opening their doors sometime early this fall. As of right now, the latest that we have heard is that Seguin residents should have some new shopping opportunities to take advantage of just in time for the 2025 holiday shopping season so we are really excited to have some more shopping amenities that will encourage folks to shop local and keep those tax dollars in our local area instead of having to go out to neighboring communities like New Braunfels, San Marcos and San Antonio. Really, I think this is just the tip of the iceberg here when it comes to the future of retail in Seguin. We have a lot of great things happening, but this is obviously a huge start for us to see a project of this nature getting ready to open up here,” said Schneuker.

Announced in September 2024, the shopping center will feature an Academy Sports & Outdoors, Hobby Lobby, James Avery, Five Below, plus other retailers.

Schneuker says the development is already having “an impact beyond its own footprint.”

“This is really the tip of the iceberg. A lot of these projects have generated a lot of excitement with other developers looking for opportunities in Seguin and other retailers as well -- that we’ve been engaged in conversations with over the past several years and it just wasn’t the right timing for them but now that we’ve got a push of well-known national retailers entering into the market, it is really catching their attention and I think even more retailers are about to come into the market in the next 12 to 18 months,” said Schneuker.

In addition to expanding shopping options, Schneuker says the project will more importantly help keep more consumer dollars circulating locally rather than leaving town.

Crossing, continued.

“We have been working hard behind the scenes here at the city to make sure we can accommodate those aggressive timelines here and obviously, we are excited about it from a city standpoint not just to provide additional shopping opportunities for our residents, but this is going to be a huge boost to our sales tax here locally as well. A lot of the products and things that these retailers offer – our residents have to go outside of Seguin to get those so it’s going to help keep a lot of our dollars more local within the Seguin community that way we can continue to reinvestment them in our growing community,” said Schneuker.

Not only is the city keeping an eye on the project’s progress but it’s also keeping an eye on the construction near and around the shopping center. He says hopefully there will be a solution to help ease traffic in that busy IH10 and State Highway 123 corridor.

“Right now, the primary points of access to that site given the fact that it is not directly on State Highway 123 are going to be coming in off of Larkin Road and obviously Jay Road there as well. There is a temporary closure of Jay Road right there to access the IH frontage road. It does seem like the timing will work out where that should open up for traffic just in time for these stores to open up. So, that will definitely help out because I know with all the construction happing in that area – folks going to Starbucks or to the hotels there or Chili’s or whatever it is, it’s a difficult area to navigate at the time being – that is going to hopefully be some immediate help there with getting Jay Road right there at the frontage road reopened,” said Schneuker. Meanwhile, as they wait for their new stores, many of the retailers have remained busy with the hiring of employees. Anyone who is interested in a job is asked to visit the respective retail store online. Some businesses like Academy already have a location on site to apply.

Trump Urges Drug Companies To Show COVID Drugs Results To Public

(Washington, DC) -- President Trump is calling on pharmaceutical companies to show the public the results of their COVID drugs. In a Truth Social post Monday, Trump said, “It is very important that the drug companies justify the success of their various COVID drugs.” He demanded answers, saying the CDC is being ripped apart over the question of whether or not the drugs have saved millions of lives. The president noted that Pfizer and other companies have shown information, but they never show those results to the public and questioned why that is. Trump said he wants the results to be shown now to the CDC and the public to “clear up this mess, one way or the other.”

CDC Scales Back FoodBorne Illness Tracking

(Washington, DC) -- Federal health officials have cut back a long-standing program that tracks foodborne illness in the U.S. The CDC said the Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network, known as FoodNet, will now require state health departments to track only two pathogens, salmonella and Shiga toxin-producing E. coli. The change affects ten states participating in FoodNet, a joint federalstate system established in 1995 that tracks foodborne infections in the U.S. FoodNet sites include health departments in Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Maryland, Minnesota, New Mexico, Oregon, Tennessee and some counties in California and New York. Before the change, health departments were also required to track campylobacter, [[ kam-pil-oh-back-tur ]] cyclospora, listeria, shigella, vibrio and yersinia.

Doctors Discover Drug

Better Than Aspirin For Heart Attack Prevention

(Madrid) -- Doctors have discovered a drug that is better than aspirin at preventing heart attacks and strokes. The find could change health guidelines worldwide. A new study found that clopidogrel [[ kloh-PID-og-grel ]], a commonly prescribed blood-thinner, is more effective. The international team of scientists behind the study, from countries including the U.S., UK, Australia, Switzerland and Japan, said the results show that clopidogrel is “superior” to aspirin. The study’s team also said the discovery should lead to “extensive adoption” of the drug globally.

Chagas Disease In California (Sacramento, CA) -- Chagas disease is in California and 29 other states. Chagas is a serious illness causing more deaths in Latin America than malaria. About 300 thousand people in the U.S. may be unaware they even have it. The disease can remain inactive for years, only becoming apparent through severe health issues like heart problems or strokes. It is caused by a parasite found in kissing bugs, which are common in California. According to the state’s department of health, California has between 70 thousand and 100 thousand Chagas cases. That’s the largest number of people in the U.S. infected with the disease. While many people acquired it abroad, some cases may have been locally transmitted.
