Target planned for Seguin County Seeks Public Input Darren Dunn
(Seguin) — The latest filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation indicates that a Target store is planned for Seguin. According to the TDLR filing, Target plans to spend $20.7 million to build a 123,000-squarefoot store in the new Seguin Exchange shopping center along the westbound Interstate 10 access road, west of State Highway 46. Construction is expected to begin in February 2027. The store is one of the first major projects announced for Seguin Exchange, which is being developed by NewQuest. Walmart is also considering building a new store nearby. The proposed Supercenter would be located along State Highway 46 at Pecan

(Seguin) -- Guadalupe County will be looking for public input when it comes to preparing for the next flood, severe storm or other disaster. Guadalupe County wants the public to be on hand as it updates its Hazard Mitigation Action Plan Residents are being encouraged to take part in the process by attending a public meeting Tuesday, Sept. 22 at the Guadalupe County Development Center. Bryce Houlton, Guadalupe County assistant fire marshal and emergency management coordinator, says the plan serves as a roadmap for identifying hazards and determining how the county can address them.
“The Hazard Mitigation Plan itself is the county’s guide to identifying different types of hazards from natural disasters. So hurricane, flooding, severe weather, things like that. And we go through all those different elements and we identify the different vulnerabilities or gaps, as we call them, and we actually identify those and we try to figure out a way to mitigate against them, whether that’s flood control protection projects, whether that’s dams or raised roads, generators for critical infrastructure, all those different kinds of things,” said Houlton. Save the date; Seguin encourages early registration for upcoming State of the City event

(Seguin) -- Residents planning to attend Seguin’s upcoming State of the City presentation are being encouraged to register online now so that city officials can better prepare for the event. The 2026 Seguin State of the City is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 29, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Seguin Coliseum. Jennifer Sourdellia, city of Seguin public information officer, says early registration will give city staff a better idea of how many people to expect. “We’re just trying to get an idea about how many people that we are are going to be expecting. And that just helps us with planning purposes,” said Sourdellia. Sourdellia says residents who register online also will have their names entered into a drawing for a prize. Those who do not register are still welcome to attend. “If everyone would go and sign up, use our community calendar on our city of Seguin website. There’s actually a little banner at the top of our website with the link, so it’s really easy just to go there, click on the link and just sign up if you plan to come,” said Sourdellia. The event will include a presentation from Seguin
Mayor Donna Dodgen and City Manager Steve Parker. They will provide an overview of the current state of the city and discuss what lies ahead. Sourdellia says the first hour will focus on the presentation, followed by an opportunity for residents to connect directly with city departments. “It’s going to be a really good informative evening --for people to come and learn about what’s going on in our city -- where we are right now in the state of our city and where we’re looking at in the future of our city,” said Sourdellia. Following the presentation, city departments will have booths set up throughout the Coliseum. Residents can visit with staff, learn about city services and programs, and get updates from the various departments. The event also will include an opportunity for residents to meet their city council members and participate in a question-and-answer session. For those unable to attend in person, Sourdellia says the presentation will be livestreamed on the City of Seguin’s Facebook page. City officials say those entering the drawing must be present to win.

Local neighborhoods encouraged to sign up for National Night Out Darren Dunn
(Seguin) -- There’s still time for you to get your neighborhood signed up for this year’s National Night Out in the city of Seguin. Mayor Donna Dodgen made the reminder during Tuesday’s Seguin City Council meeting. Dodgen says National Night Out gives neighbors a chance to get to know one another and also provides them a chance to make sure that they are supporting the safety and well being of their entire neighborhood. “National Night Out is coming and it’s right around the corner. So please, (sign up). I know there are many, many neighborhoods that traditionally have something and we all flock and go to. It’s really an incredible night in Seguin, Texas and lots of folks participate. So, don’t forget to register for that. It’s online by visiting the National Night Out tab on the Seguin Police Department’s webpage. National Night Out happens Tuesday, October the 6th,” said Dodgen. Police and fire officials show up for official National Night Out events to help strengthen their relationships with the public. Again, neighborhoods can get signed up via the link the Seguin Police Department’s website. The Guadalupe County Sheriff ’s Office

Plan, continued. Houlton says public participation is very important. He says that’s because county officials want to make sure the plan reflects what residents are actually experiencing throughout Guadalupe County. “We have this plan to be able to go after state and federal money to mitigate against those things and protect those assets if need be. And it involves public input because of course, we looked at it, but we want to make sure there’s nothing we’re missing. So that’s why we bring the public in to get their feedback on the plan. Is there anything we’re missing or anything they think we need to look at further when it comes to that? You know, the community knows the area better than anybody else. And so that’s why we bring the public in,” said Houlton. Houlton says one example
of how residents can help is their knowledge of the area. “I’ll give you a good example. So roughly Guadalupe County has over 200 low water crossings and the last two large rain events we had the one in July this year and then the one last July 5th, we actually identified almost a dozen new low water crossings because of the growth.
So because of development and the developers, some of the water has changed the way it flows across these fields of pastures. It goes across our city county and state roads. And so having that public input going, hey, this is a low-lying area. This floods now where it may not have flooded before, that allows us to identify it, add that to the list to where we can potentially look at whether that’s a road elevation or our box culverts. And that could be, you know, hazard mitigation fund money, or it also could be county general fund money because the county also spends money every year to raise the water crossings. So that’s a really easy example,” said Houlton. The Hazard Mitigation Action Plan meeting will be held at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the county’s development center. The development center is located at 310 IH 10 West just south of the Guadalupe County Jail.

With deep love and grateful hearts, we announce the passing of Gregory Arce Jr., who entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior on September 16, 2026, at the age of 93. Gregory was born on December 2, 1932, in New Braunfels, Texas, to Gregory Arce Sr. and Petra Arce. He lived a long and meaningful life defined by hard work, unwavering faith, and a deep love for his family. For 64 wonderful years, Gregory shared a loving marriage with his beloved wife, Maria Luisa Arce. Together they built a family founded on faith, love, and strong values that continue to guide generations today. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather whose influence will live on through all who were blessed to know him. Gregory was a hardworking man who believed in providing for his family and leading by example. He instilled in his children and grandchildren the importance of honesty, integrity, perseverance, and above all, faith in God. God was truly the center of his life. He spoke about the Lord every chance he got and shared his faith with everyone he met. Whether talking with family, friends, or strangers, Gregory never missed an opportunity to speak of God’s goodness and grace. His faith gave him a peace and confidence that never wavered. He was absolutely certain of his eternal home in Heaven, and while we grieve his absence, we find comfort in knowing that he has entered those pearly gates and is now reunited with his beloved wife, Maria Luisa, and his cherished

daughter, Sandy. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maria Luisa Arce, and his daughter, Sandy Arce. Study Shows Ultra Processed Foods linked To Knee Issues (Oak Brook, IL) -- New research shows that ultra-processed foods can be linked to fat build up in the thigh muscles. The study done by the Radiological Society of North America looked at MRI results from more than 600 people at risk for knee osteoarthritis. The organization found those who ate more ultra-processed foods tended to have greater amounts of fat within their thigh muscles and it took into account calorie intake and exercise and other factors. One of the study’s authors says the research underscores the vital role of nutrition in muscle quality in the context of knee osteoarthritis. Survey Shows Low Cancer Test Rates Among Disabled (Atlanta, GA) -- New research suggests cancer testing for Americans with disabilities is much lower than testing for those without disabilities. The study done by the American Cancer Society involved data from the 2021 and 2023 National Health Interview Survey on self-reported breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer screening. Dr. Priti Bandi with the American Cancer Society says it’s known those with disabilities have lower screening levels in general but the magnitude of some disparities that showed up consistently is cause for alarm. She suggests at-home testing may be a way to address disparities. Infants Conjoined At The Head Successfully Separated (St. Louis, MO) -- Two infants in Missouri who were born conjoined at the head have been successfully separated. Officials at a children’s hospital in St. Louis says the twin girls traveled with their family from Ethiopia to undergo cranial separation, and it took a team of specialists over 24 hours to complete the surgery earlier this year. The two-year-old twins are now recovering and are undergoing rehabilitation at the hospital. The head neurological surgeon at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital said in a press conference Wednesday that the girls will now have opportunities that would not have been possible without the surgery. Breakfast Before School Is Important (Cleveland, OH) -- A health expert is emphasizing the importance of children having breakfast before heading off to school. Jennifer Hyland, a dietitian at the Cleveland Clinic says children who don’t eat breakfast can have brain fog and fatigue and that could have an impact on learning. Hyland suggests giving children something with fiber and protein which could include egg, toast, milk or yogurt as possible options. She says younger children don’t need as much protein, but a protein drink could be a good option for a teenager.
