St. James Fall Family Festival set for Sunday

(Seguin) – The annual St. James Catholic Church Fall Family Festival returns this Sunday. The festival will be held on church grounds from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Charles Villeneuve, a member of the festival committee, says the event which includes a full day of activities and entertainment, is open to anyone in the community. “It is open to the public. There will be delicious food. There’ll be a live auction. There’ll be a silent auction. They’ll be a country store.
There’ll be plenty of games for the kids and musical entertainment and just a lot of good camaraderie,” said Villeneuve. The highlight of the festival will again be the annual meal. Villeneuve says the meal is prepared with help from members of the church. Plates include a chicken quarter, pork steak, homemade potato salad, green beans plus dessert. Cost is $15 each. Matador Theatre wraps up annual Children’s Show this Saturday with public performance

(Seguin) – Hundreds of Seguin ISD kids have already enjoyed the show, so now it’s time for the adults to get a look at what they have been talking about. This Saturday afternoon, Seguin High School’s Matador Theatre will be wrapping up this year’s children’s show production with one final public performance of “Between the Lines Jr.” Theatre Teacher Lydia Robles says SHS students have been performing for younger students from across Seguin ISD this past week. Robles says the annual children’s show gives those students an opportunity to experience live theater while also seeing what could be possible for them in the future. “Our current high school students will talk about their experiences as a child and how they always enjoyed it, how it was their first experience with theater — with a live performance. And I like to think, absolutely, that’s kind of something that stirs the student to get engaged in creativity and fine arts in general,” said Robles. The theater students performed for Seguin ISD thirdto eighth-grade students on Thursday and are scheduled to perform for four additional schools Friday. For Robles and her students, those school performances are among the year’s highlights. “This is one of the things that’s their favorite part of the entire year. To have an entire auditorium filled with young students who have come to watch your show and the energy that they give off, you know, just saying good morning and you hear 800 young people say good
morning back to you. It just zings you with excitement. It’s absolutely awesome,” said Robles. Robles says her students have pieced together a great show and encourages folks in the community to also come out and enjoy its wonderful storyline. “‘Between the Lines Jr.’follows a high school girl who is struggling after her parents’ divorce and a move to a new school. She discovers a book that transports her into the world of a fairy tale, where she finds a sense of belonging and becomes connected to one of the characters,” said Robles. She adds that although it’s deemed a children’s show, the overall message is for everyone. “And it’s the story about discovering your purpose even in maybe your hardest moment that you might experience. Um, what it is that we can do to pull through or to pull ourselves through. It’s a really sweet story. And it’s got a really fun twist at the end too. So it’s a great show,” said Robles. The Saturday performance begins at 2 p.m. Tickets are $8 in advance and $12 at the door. Mini Mats Cheer Clinic Set for Saturday at Seguin High School (Seguin) -- Local kids are invited to cheer on the Seguin Matadors. Students in Kindergarten through the eighth grade are invited to participate in this year’s Mini Mats Cheer Clinic. The clinic is set for Saturday, Sept. 19, from 8:30 to 11 a.m. at the Seguin High School Student Activities Center. Registration and check-in will begin at 8 a.m. Organizers say the Mini Mats Cheer Clinic will give participants a chance to learn cheers and skills alongside

Teatro to host one of a kind art exhibit for military members, veterans only Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) – An exhibit that brings together medicine, art and healing will give local military veterans, service members and their families an opportunity this Saturday to experience the work behind a physician and artist. Teatro De Artes De Juan Seguin will host “The Intersection of Medicine, Art, and Healing” featuring artist Dr. Miguel Vazquez this Saturday at 2 p.m.
It’s important to note that this program is specifically and only for military veterans, service members and their families. Vazquez, a family medicine physician, will bring a large collection of his artwork to Seguin. The artwork will be available for viewing and purchase, with a portion of the proceeds from art sales donated to Teatro in support of its mission. The centerpiece of the exhibit is
Starletta, a full-size human skeleton covered in more than 50,000 Swarovski crystals. Vazquez says his interest in creating Starletta grew from his fascination with the Aztec and Maya cultures and the ways they decorated skulls using materials such as jade, obsidian and bone. He also became interested in the use of seed beads by the Huichol people of Mexico in decorative offerings. Teatro, pg. 4

Entertainment throughout the day will include Jeff Willis, DJ Alex Avila, Seguin High School Mariachi performers and Clint Taft & the Buck Wild Band, which will perform from 3 to 6 p.m. Children’s’ activities include pony rides, train rides, a petting zoo, games, a water slide and a bouncy house.
Villeneuve says organizers are hoping for good weather and a strong community turnout. “We just look for hopefully a little bit cooler weather and a good turnout from the public,” said Villeneuve. The festival will also include food booths, a country corner, gift card raffle plus other activities throughout the day. The church is located at 510 South Camp Street in Seguin.
Teatro, continued. The project of Starletta took 423 hours to complete and resulted in a crystallized skeleton that Teatro says stands apart from other works of art. From an early age, Vasquez was drawn to science, eventually pursuing a career in medicine. His art, he says, is an attempt to capture some of the many colors, feelings, movements, sounds and experiences found throughout human life. The exhibit runs through November 18, with gallery hours from 4 to
8 p.m. Mondays through Wednesdays and select Saturdays. However, Starletta will only be on display this Saturday, Sept. 19. The exhibit is partially sponsored by the Texas Commission on the Arts, National Endowment for the Arts, City of Seguin, Mid-America Arts Alliance and DAV Chapter 61. DAV Chapter 61 of Seguin’s contribution will be the sponsoring of a taco and nacho bar for those attending. Due to construction at the front of the building, visitors are asked to use the ADA-accessible entrance at the back of the Cultural Arts Center. Teatro’s Cultural Arts Center is located at 921 W. With deep love and grateful hearts, we announce the passing of Gregory Arce Jr., who entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior on September 16, 2026, at the age of 93. Gregory was born on December 2, 1932, in New Braunfels, Texas, to Gregory Arce Sr. and Petra Arce. He lived a long and meaningful life defined by hard work, unwavering faith, and a deep love for his family. For 64 wonderful years, Gregory shared a loving marriage with his beloved wife, Maria Luisa Arce. Together they built a family founded on faith, love, and strong values that continue to guide generations today. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather whose influence will live on through all who were blessed to know him. Gregory was a hardworking man who believed in providing for his family and leading by example. He instilled in his children and grandchildren the importance of honesty, integrity, perseverance, and above all, faith in God. God was truly the center of his life. He spoke about the Lord every chance he got and shared his faith with everyone he met. Whether talking with family, friends, or strangers, Gregory never missed an opportunity to speak of God’s goodness and grace. His faith gave him a peace and confidence that never wavered. Christa Ruth Koenig, lovingly known to all as Chrissy, passed away peacefully on September 9, 2026, surrounded by her family. What a glorious reunion awaited her in heaven, where she was welcomed into the loving arms of those who had gone before her. Chrissy was born on February 11, 1953, in Austin, Texas, to Bertha (Young) and Horace Fohn. She grew up in Rockne, Texas, surrounded by the love of her parents and older siblings, and the joy of belonging to a large, close-knit extended family. Chrissy treasured sharing stories of her childhood, from the nuns at Catholic school to playing kick the can with her cousins. A gifted student, she excelled academically, even skipping the fourth grade. During her years at Bastrop High School, she participated in many activities and especially enjoyed cheerleading, which brought her treasured memories and friendships that lasted a lifetime. During high school, Chrissy met the love of her life, Jim. Even before she graduated, she convinced her parents to take her to South Carolina to visit him while he was completing Army basic training. Chrissy and Jim married in 1972 and soon made their home in McQueeney, Texas, where they spent more than 43 years working side by side at McQueeney Mill Feed Store raising their family and building a beautiful life together. Chrissy was an amazing cook who found great joy in reading and collecting cookbooks, watching cooking shows and feeding the people she loved. Her kitchen welcomed family and friends to meals ranging from enchiladas to étouffée - and just about everything in between. She delighted in preparing dishes and sharing stories that paid homage to her Cajun roots. She was also an avid movie lover; there was seldom a movie Chrissy had not seen, she took joy in talking about each film, always ready to share her thoughts or favorite moment. Of all the roles Chrissy cherished throughout her life, being “Mimi” to her five grandchildren was among her greatest joys. Each summer, she hosted “Cousin Camp” at her home, filling the days with fun and creating memories for the four boys and one girl who absolutely adored her. Amanda was born May 20, 1951, to Ruth Ella and James Miller in Seguin, Texas. Amanda grew up in Kingsbury, TX, and passed away on September 6, 2026. Amanda was preceded in death by her parents Ruth Ella and James Miller and her siblings, John Miller and Thelma Mae Clark, niece Erica Franklin, nephews LaRue Miller and Gregory Martin. She leaves to cherish her memories her siblings, Lillie Ruth Martin, Urlet Miller (Tracy), Roy Miler (Maria), Lizzie Ola Pezoli, and Lillie Mae MillerWalker (Ralph). She graduated from Gonzales High. She attended Saint Phillips and then transferred to Houston Tillotson University graduated in 1974 with a degree in sociology. Amanda worked for Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for over 30 years until retirement. For many years she sold Avon products throughout the south Texas area. Even after retiring she worked with the election; reminding her loved ones to go vote. Amanda was never married. She took her duty as an aunt very seriously by

helping with raising her nieces and nephews. Her hobbies were traveling, socializing, shopping, and spending time with family and friends. She enjoyed sending greeting cards to each and everyone. Amanda took pictures everywhere she went. She was good at cooking corn bread dressing and preparing potatoes salad. Her laughter was infectious and her smile warmed your heart. Amanda’s legacy of love, laughter and strength will live on in all who knew and loved her. Amanda received Christ at an early age. She enjoyed attending church. Amanda was a member of McKinley Height under the leadership of Reverend Grant for many years. She attended Faith Catherall COGIC until her health started failing her under Supt. Dennis Watson. He later earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Texas State University in 2010. Jeff spent more than two decades in the hospitality industry, most notably as Dining Room Supervisor at Embassy Suites Outdoor World in Grapevine. He later joined USA as a personal property insurance adjuster. Adventure called him west to Arizona, where he explored an old gold mine and collected turquoise and gold flakes. When USAA offered a transfer back to Texas, Jeff returned to Rockport and reunited with his lifelong best friend, Jayson Carleton. They spent countless hours fishing, restoring his father’s old Kenner boat. Jeff had a gentle heart for animals-especially cats-and a quiet kindness that touched everyone. Barbara Ann Batey, age 86, passed away on Sunday, August 23, 2026, at her home. She was born in Seguin, Texas to the late Edwin and Edna Heideke on March 7, 1940. Preceded in death by her loving husband, Robert E. Batey, brother, Daniel Heideke, and sister, Geraldine Heideke. Barbara was a talented seamstress, designer, and creator who found joy in making beautiful things for others. Barbara’s talents were showcased for all to enjoy, especially around Christmastime. What began as a single village house, built by her father for the Seguin State Bank’s annual Christmas Village, grew into a beloved local attraction, with Barbara, her brother Daniel, and her sister-in-law June Heideke helping bring the village to life. She also worked at Gift and Gourmet, where she found immense joy assisting shoppers find the perfect treasure. Barbara was a faithful member of Cross Church in Seguin, where she especially enjoyed decorating the fellowship hall for many special occasions. She also generously gave her time to others, volunteering for nearly ten years at the Guadalupe Regional Medical Center’s central desk.
Jeffrey Scott Foerster, of San Antonio, Texas, was born on November 11, 1973, in Seguin, Texas. He was baptized into the Christian faith at Cross Church on October 8, 1983, and confirmed there on May 2,1988. Jeff passed away unexpectedly on September 3, 2026, in Seguin, Texas, leaving behind a family and community who loved him deeply. Jeff is survived by his father, August Foerster, and his stepmother, Judy; his sister, Shelly Cavazos; his brother-in-law, Chris Cavazos; nephews, Ashton Cowan, Kaleb Cavazos, and Dylan Cavazos; niece, Kerstyn Foerster and partner Chance Hartsfield; great-nephews, Waylon and Tatum Hartsfield; the love of his life, Laura Jacobus; his beloved cat, Schotzie; uncles, Andrew Foerster, Larry Bornemann and wife Kathy, and Danny Bornemann and wife Joan; aunt, Peggy Zwicke; He was preceded in death by his mother, Barbara Bornemann Foerster, and his grandparents Andrew & Annie Foerster and Elmond & Viola Bornemann. Ninfa was born on March 12, 1941, in Seguin, Texas, to Otto (Arthur) Sassenhagen and Petra (Luna) Sassenhagen. Ninfa was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and homemaker whose greatest joy in life was her family. She dedicated herself to creating a loving and welcoming home for those she loved. She took great pride in keeping her home spotless and beautiful, and she had a natural talent for decorating and making things with her hands. She was crafty in so many ways and could turn her creativity into something special. Among her many talents, she lovingly made clothes for her children, filling their childhoods with pieces made especially by their mother. Ninfa also had a generous heart and a genuine willingness to help others. She believed in giving back and quietly supported charitable causes through donations whenever she was able. She never hesitated to lend a helping hand to someone in need, and her generosity was simply another reflection of the kindness and compassion she carried throughout her life. Whether through a charitable donation, a helping hand, or simply being there for someone, Ninfa found meaningful ways to make a difference in the lives of others. Ninfa found joy in the simple things in life, especially spending time with her family. She loved being surrounded by the people she loved and cherished the memories made together. She also had a special love for live music and enjoyed the happiness and energy that came from listening to music and being with those around her. family. She leaves behind a lifetime of memories, traditions, creativity, and unconditional love that will continue through the generations who were blessed to know her. Ninfa is preceded in death by her parents, Otto (Arthur) and Petra Sassenhagen; her sister, Margaret Sassenhagen; her brothers, Gilbert and David Sassenhagen; and her grandson, Joel Hernandez Jr. She is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, Robert Hernandez Sr.; and their seven children, Viki Perez (Pete), Robert (Bobby) Hernandez Jr., Joel Hernandez Sr. (Sylvia), Melinda Pena (Ruben), Melissa Carrillo ( Julian), Rosie Montoya (Ben), and Dean Hernandez (Roberta); 18 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Hortencia Morales, Dalia Medina, and Diana Walsh (Mark); her brothers, Gabriel Sassenhagen (Mary), Arthur Sassenhagen III (Ana); and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will forever cherish her memory. Ninfa’s life was a beautiful reflection of the love she gave so freely. Though she will be deeply missed, her love and memory will live on through the many generations of family she leaves behind. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate hospice staff and to everyone at Guadalupe Regional Medical Center for the care, kindness, and support they provided to Ninfa and her family during this difficult time. AI Takes Aim at Superbugs Before Antibiotics Fail (Houston, TX) -- New artificial intelligence tools could help doctors stop deadly superbugs before antibiotics fail. According to new University of Houston research announced this week, Texas researchers are using computer models to predict how drug-resistant staph infections like MRSA [[ MER-suh ]] may change. Federal health data shows untreatable superbugs sicken over two-point-eight million Americans and kill over 35-thousand people each year. Backed by a one and a quarter million dollar federal grant, the four-year project aims to help scientists design treatments that stay ahead of those mutations. Signs Ebola Is Getting Contained In Congo (Congo) -- The Ebola outbreak continues to be a problem in Congo but health officials think it is starting to get contained. World Health Organization officials say there are encouraging signs of gaining ground on what has been the deadliest Ebola outbreak in the country’s history. However, they say it’s far from over. There’s been more than seven thousand Ebola deaths in Congo. Moderna is working on a vaccine. Skin Cancer Foundation Highlights Risk For Farmers (New York, NY) -- It’s National Farm Safety and Health Week and the Skin Cancer Foundation is highlighting the importance of protection for farmers and outdoor workers. The foundation says they are 60 percent more likely to get nonmelanoma skin cancer than the general population because of the amount of time spent outdoors. The foundation urges outdoor workers to use sunscreen, protective clothing, hats, shade and get routine skin checks to reduce their risk of getting skin cancer. Experts say 90 percent of skin cancer cases are preventable with a good sun protection strategy. Japan Has 100K People At Least 100 Years Old (Japan) -- Japan now has more than 100-thosuand people who are at least 100 years old, a record high. Nearly 90 percent of them are women. Japan officials released the stats this week on Respect the Aged Day, a day when healthy people hitting the century mark are honored by government. However, Japan officials are highlighting a rapidly declining population in the country. The country’s fertility rate is at a record low of one-point-onefour in 2025, far below the two-point-one children per woman needed to maintain Japan’s current population.

TLU Nursing Students Offering Free Health Services Texas Lutheran University Community Health Nursing students are providing free health services in Seguin, including patient education, medication teaching and management, and assistance completing the “File of Life” emergency medical information form.
