Seguin’s new coffee shop to host Caffeine For A Cause fundraiser

(Seguin) – A new coffee shop wants your next cup to be for a good cause. 7 Brew Drive Thru Coffee will officially open Monday, September 21, but residents will get an opportunity to visit the new location this weekend during the company’s Caffeine for a Cause fundraiser benefiting the Guadalupe County Children’s Advocacy Center. Audrey Hess, marketing manager for 7 Brew, says the focus on giving back is part of what she believes makes 7 Brew different from other coffee shops. “I think what sets us apart from other coffee shops in the area and around Segin is we love to cultivate kindness. That is our big motto as 7 brew,” Hess said. “We care about the communities that we’re opening in and we want to make a
great impact and change some lives of the people that are going to be enjoying our coffee.” Caffeine for a Cause will run Friday through Sunday. During the fundraiser, customers can receive any drink for free and choose how much they want to donate to the Children’s Advocacy Center. 7 Brew offers more than coffee. It also offers tea, smoothies, shakes and energy drinks. Hess says customers can choose from more than 25,000 drink combinations, including sugar-free and dairy-free options. The most important part of this weekend is that customers can donate whatever dollar amount they wish. “Donations can range from $5 to $20, with some customers donating $100 to the cause. City offering golf discounts to attract more military players Darren Dunn
(Seguin) -- The city of Seguin wants to continue to encourage more military members to play a round, or two, or 20 at the Starcke Park Golf Course. The Seguin City Council on Tuesday approved a new fee schedule for active duty and retired military members. It will provide discounts on their cost to play at the municipal course. Golf Course Manager Bruce Allen says they started offering some of these discounts earlier this summer, and the response has been tremendous. He says hundreds of military members have come to Seguin to enjoy the newly renovated course. “When we reopened the golf course in June, we offered military discounts for the first time. It’s been very well appreciated. And since I sent you that memo, we’re up to 690 uses since then. That’s just (play) during the week. At Council Carlsson’s request, we would like to offer memberships, (including) a discount on memberships and a discount on players cards. The memberships will only be for Seguin residents. Players cards will be for anybody that plays a lot. A players card it’s for 20 rounds in six months. And so if you play a lot, we reward you by giving you that discount. We would like to do that to all our military members that come from out of town and play,” said Allen. Councilman John Carlsson originally made the recommendation to offer the discounts, the Golf Advisory Board and now the Seguin City Council also agreed.

Hess. “So there’s just something for everybody and when they come through and they’re not sure what to order, we’ll take as much time as we need to find something that you like and if you try something, you’re like, hey, this isn’t for me, we’ll fix it for you, free of charge, no problem.” Caffeine for a Cause will be held Friday, September 18, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday (Sept 19-20) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. 7 Brew is located at 350 State Highway 123 Bypass.

Applications for Guadalupe County Fair Parade now being accepted

SEGUIN, TX— The 143rd Guadalupe County Fair & PRCA Rodeo kicks off in October, and applications are still being accepted for the Guadalupe County Fair Parade. The parade rolls through downtown Seguin on Friday, Oct. 9, at 10 a.m., bringing marching bands, floats, horseback riders, local businesses, schools and community groups down Austin Street. Businesses, organizations, schools, clubs and community groups are encouraged to join the fun and enter the parade. Applications are due Sept. 30 and can be submitted online at gcfair.org. Questions about the parade can be emailed to gcfairoffice@gmail.com. The Guadalupe County Fair has been a Seguin tradition for generations, bringing the community together each fall. Festivities begin with Kickoff Weekend Oct. 2 through 4, followed by the main fair Oct. 8 through 11. Events include the State Championship BBQ Cookoff, Mutton Bustin’ Bonanza, livestock shows, agricultural and horticultural exhibits, carnival rides, PRCA Rodeo performances and more. There is also still time to enter Main Street’s Scarecrow & Skeleton Display Contest. Created in partnership
with the Guadalupe County Fair Association in 2000, the contest helps bring a little extra fall spirit downtown during fair season. Scarecrow & Skeleton Contest entry forms are due Sept. 25. Christa Ruth Koenig, lovingly known to all as Chrissy, passed away peacefully on September 9, 2026, surrounded by her family. What a glorious reunion awaited her in heaven, where she was welcomed into the loving arms of those who had gone before her. Chrissy was born on February 11, 1953, in Austin, Texas, to Bertha (Young) and Horace Fohn. She grew up in Rockne, Texas, surrounded by the love of her parents and older siblings, and the joy of belonging to a large, close-knit extended family. Chrissy treasured sharing stories of her childhood, from the nuns at Catholic school to playing kick the can with her cousins. A gifted student, she excelled academically, even skipping the fourth grade. During her years at Bastrop High School, she participated in many activities and especially enjoyed cheerleading, which brought her treasured memories and friendships that lasted a lifetime. During high school, Chrissy met the love of her life, Jim. Even before she graduated, she convinced her parents to take her to South Carolina to visit him while he was completing Army basic training. Chrissy and Jim married in 1972 and soon made their home in McQueeney, Texas, where they spent more than 43 years working side by side at McQueeney Mill Feed Store raising their family and building a beautiful life together. Chrissy was an amazing cook who found great joy in reading and collecting cookbooks, watching cooking shows and feeding the people she loved. Her kitchen welcomed family and friends to meals ranging from enchiladas to étouffée - and just about everything in between. She delighted in preparing dishes and sharing stories that paid homage to her Cajun roots. She was also an avid movie lover; there was seldom a movie Chrissy had not seen, she took joy in talking about each film, always ready to share her thoughts or favorite moment. Of all the roles Chrissy cherished throughout her life, being “Mimi” to her five grandchildren was among her greatest joys. Each summer, she hosted “Cousin Camp” at her home, filling the days with fun and creating memories for the four boys and one girl who absolutely adored her. Her love of cooking, movies, storytelling, The University of Texas, and, above all, family lives on

through each of them. Chrissy was preceded in death by her son, Drew Zachary Koenig; her parents, Bertha and Horace Fohn; her brothers, Larry Fohn and wife Cherry, and Kenneth Fohn and wife Glenna; her sister, Gwendolyn Fohn Till and husband Felix; her brother-in-law, David Fiebrich; and her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Juanita and Fred Koenig. Those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband of 53 years, James “Jim” Koenig; her children, Brittany Hanna and husband John, and Josh Koenig and wife Amy; her grandchildren, Hudson, Cortland, and Berkeley Hanna, and Jacob and Jase Koenig; her sister, Elberta Fiebrich; her brothersin-law, Fred Koenig and wife Jeanie, Johnny Koenig and wife Loyce, and Bill Koenig and wife Tammy; her sisters-in-law, Pat Vick and husband Roy, Teresa Pesquera and husband Luis, Kathy Walleck and husband Erwin; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of dear friends. Funeral mass will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rockne, Texas at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 19th, 2026. A reception will follow in the Old Fellowship Hall. Private interment will be held later at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Rockne. Amanda was born May 20, 1951, to Ruth Ella and James Miller in Seguin, Texas. Amanda grew up in Kingsbury, TX, and passed away on September 6, 2026. Amanda was preceded in death by her parents Ruth Ella and James Miller and her siblings, John Miller and Thelma Mae Clark, niece Erica Franklin, nephews LaRue Miller and Gregory Martin. She leaves to cherish her memories her siblings, Lillie Ruth Martin, Urlet Miller (Tracy), Roy Miler (Maria), Lizzie Ola Pezoli, and Lillie Mae MillerWalker (Ralph). She graduated from Gonzales High. She attended Saint Phillips and then transferred to Houston Tillotson University graduated in 1974 with a degree in sociology. Amanda worked for Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for over 30 years until retirement. For many years she sold Avon products throughout the south Texas area. Even after retiring she worked with the election; reminding her loved ones to go vote. Amanda was never married. She took her duty as an aunt very seriously by

helping with raising her nieces and nephews. Her hobbies were traveling, socializing, shopping, and spending time with family and friends. She enjoyed sending greeting cards to each and everyone. Amanda took pictures everywhere she went. She was good at cooking corn bread dressing and preparing potatoes salad. Her laughter was infectious and her smile warmed your heart. Amanda’s legacy of love, laughter and strength will live on in all who knew and loved her. Amanda received Christ at an early age. She enjoyed attending church. Amanda was a member of McKinley Height under the leadership of Reverend Grant for many years. She attended Faith Catherall COGIC until her health started failing her under Supt. Dennis Watson. The family wishes to acknowledge with deep appreciation the many expressions of love, concerns and kindness shown to them during this time of bereavement. Special thanks to Hospice of Austin. He later earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Texas State University in 2010. Jeff spent more than two decades in the hospitality industry, most notably as Dining Room Supervisor at Embassy Suites Outdoor World in Grapevine. He later joined USA as a personal property insurance adjuster. Adventure called him west to Arizona, where he explored an old gold mine and collected turquoise and gold flakes. When USAA offered a transfer back to Texas, Jeff returned to Rockport and reunited with his lifelong best friend, Jayson Carleton. They spent countless hours fishing, restoring his father’s old Kenner boat. Jeff had a gentle heart for animals-especially cats-and a quiet kindness that touched everyone. Barbara Ann Batey, age 86, passed away on Sunday, August 23, 2026, at her home. She was born in Seguin, Texas to the late Edwin and Edna Heideke on March 7, 1940. Preceded in death by her loving husband, Robert E. Batey, brother, Daniel Heideke, and sister, Geraldine Heideke. Barbara was a talented seamstress, designer, and creator who found joy in making beautiful things for others. Barbara’s talents were showcased for all to enjoy, especially around Christmastime. What began as a single village house, built by her father for the Seguin State Bank’s annual Christmas Village, grew into a beloved local attraction, with Barbara, her brother Daniel, and her sister-in-law June Heideke helping bring the village to life. She also worked at Gift and Gourmet, where she found immense joy assisting shoppers find the perfect treasure. Barbara was a faithful member of Cross Church in Seguin, where she especially enjoyed decorating the fellowship hall for many special occasions. She also generously gave her time to others, volunteering for nearly ten years at the Guadalupe Regional Medical Center’s central desk.
Jeffrey Scott Foerster, of San Antonio, Texas, was born on November 11, 1973, in Seguin, Texas. He was baptized into the Christian faith at Cross Church on October 8, 1983, and confirmed there on May 2,1988. Jeff passed away unexpectedly on September 3, 2026, in Seguin, Texas, leaving behind a family and community who loved him deeply. Jeff is survived by his father, August Foerster, and his stepmother, Judy; his sister, Shelly Cavazos; his brother-in-law, Chris Cavazos; nephews, Ashton Cowan, Kaleb Cavazos, and Dylan Cavazos; niece, Kerstyn Foerster and partner Chance Hartsfield; great-nephews, Waylon and Tatum Hartsfield; the love of his life, Laura Jacobus; his beloved cat, Schotzie; uncles, Andrew Foerster, Larry Bornemann and wife Kathy, and Danny Bornemann and wife Joan; aunt, Peggy Zwicke; He was preceded in death by his mother, Barbara Bornemann Foerster, and his grandparents Andrew & Annie Foerster and Elmond & Viola Bornemann. Jeff ’s lifelong love of the outdoors began as a small boy fishing with his dad and Uncle Larry. Whether on the Texas coast or local creeks, the water became his second home and shaped much of who he was. After graduating from Seguin High School in 1992, he worked alongside his father as a fabricator before pursuing studies at Texas Tech University, contributing to

Ninfa S. Hernandez, 85, of McQueeney, Texas, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. Ninfa was born on March 12, 1941, in Seguin, Texas, to Otto (Arthur) Sassenhagen and Petra (Luna) Sassenhagen. Ninfa was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and homemaker whose greatest joy in life was her family. She dedicated herself to creating a loving and welcoming home for those she loved. She took great pride in keeping her home spotless and beautiful, and she had a natural talent for decorating and making things with her hands. She was crafty in so many ways and could turn her creativity into something special. Among her many talents, she lovingly made clothes for her children, filling their childhoods with pieces made especially by their mother. Ninfa also had a generous heart and a genuine willingness to help others. She believed in giving back and quietly supported charitable causes through donations whenever she was able. She never hesitated to lend a helping hand to someone in need, and her generosity was simply another reflection of the kindness and compassion she carried throughout her life. Whether through a charitable donation, a helping hand, or simply being there for someone, Ninfa found meaningful ways to make a difference in the lives of others. Ninfa found joy in the simple things in life, especially spending time with her family. She loved being surrounded by the people she loved and cherished the memories made together. She also had a special love for live music and enjoyed the happiness and energy that came from listening to music and being with those around her. Above all, Ninfa’s greatest legacy will be the love she poured into her

family. She leaves behind a lifetime of memories, traditions, creativity, and unconditional love that will continue through the generations who were blessed to know her. Ninfa is preceded in death by her parents, Otto (Arthur) and Petra Sassenhagen; her sister, Margaret Sassenhagen; her brothers, Gilbert and David Sassenhagen; and her grandson, Joel Hernandez Jr. She is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, Robert Hernandez Sr.; and their seven children, Viki Perez (Pete), Robert (Bobby) Hernandez Jr., Joel Hernandez Sr. (Sylvia), Melinda Pena (Ruben), Melissa Carrillo ( Julian), Rosie Montoya (Ben), and Dean Hernandez (Roberta); 18 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Hortencia Morales, Dalia Medina, and Diana Walsh (Mark); her brothers, Gabriel Sassenhagen (Mary), Arthur Sassenhagen III (Ana); and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will forever cherish her memory. Ninfa’s life was a beautiful reflection of the love she gave so freely. Though she will be deeply missed, her love and memory will live on through the many generations of family she leaves behind. Pennsylvania Reports 4th Measles-Related Death (Mifflin Co., PA) -- A fourth measles-related death has been reported in Pennsylvania. This marks the most measles deaths in one year in the U.S. since 1992. The country recorded three deaths from measles last year. Pennsylvania reported the latest death was an unvaccinated person in Mifflin County. Two infants and a 40-year-old woman had previously died of the highly-contagious virus in the state. WHO Prequalifies Multi-Dose RSV Vaccine Vial (Geneva) -- More vaccine protection against RSV could be coming for infants. It’s very common and contagious germ that infects the nose, throat, airways, and lungs. The World Health Organization has prequalified the RSV vaccine. That means it’s expected to make maternal vaccination against the disease more affordable in a number of countries. The WHO prequalified the vaccine’s single-dose presentation last year. Multi-dose vials will allow the vaccination of more people. RSV is one of the leading causes of respiratory illness and hospitalization. September Is Prostate Awareness Month (Atlanta, GA) -- The American Cancer Society says about one in eight men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime. During this Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, a new survey shows just 20-percent of men know that drinking milk and eating other dairy products can increase the risk of prostate cancer. Morning Consult for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine did the survey of more than eleven-hundred men. About two thirds of respondents say they would consider avoiding dairy after hearing that. Several studies also show plant- based diets lower the risk of prostate cancer. Survey Finds Simple Treatments Are Best For Knee Arthritis (Undated) -- A new large survey shows simple treatments may be the best when it comes to dealing with knee pain caused by arthritis. A survey of more than 10-thousand people in China, published in the open-access journal PLOS, found that knee braces and exercise were effective pain relievers. Hydrotherapy, which involves treatments in warm water, also worked well for reducing pain. Ultrasound ranked near the bottom. The study’s author suggests that the survey’s findings could influence future guidelines to focus on safer, lower-cost interventions.

TLU Nursing Students Offering Free Health Services Texas Lutheran University Community Health Nursing students are providing free health services in Seguin, including patient education, medication teaching and management, and assistance completing the “File of Life” emergency medical information form. Services are available from 9 a.m. to noon at Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church, 416 Dolle Ave., on the first, second and fourth Mondays of each month, and at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 409 W. TLU Brown Cultural Event Five-time Olympian and six-time Olympic medalist Elana Meyers Taylor will speak Tuesday, September 15, at 7 p.m. in Jackson Auditorium at Texas Lutheran University. Guadalupe County Hazard Mitigation Plan Public Meeting Guadalupe County is seeking public input as it updates its Hazard Mitigation Action Plan. A public meeting will be held Tuesday, September 22, at 5 p.m. at the Guadalupe County Development Center, 310 IH10 West in Seguin. Residents can learn about the plan and provide input on natural and human-caused hazards affecting the county. An online public survey will also remain open through February 12, 2027.
