“The Table” rooted in local pastor’s early lessons in service
Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- What has grown into one of Seguin’s largest Thanksgiving outreach events began decades ago with a simple lesson about helping others. Pastor Chris Larson of New Life Fellowship says the inspiration for The Table goes back to his childhood – a memory he so fondly recalls now that he is preparing for the free holiday feast this Sunday in Seguin.
Leading into that early memory, Larson shares how the tradition began long before it became Seguin’s communitywide effort.
“It started when I was about 14. My mom woke me up early in the morning at about 4 o’clock in the morning and we were on (school) break, and she said before we feed ourselves, we are going to feed others, and we fed about 250 people,” said Larson.
Larson says he continued serving

meals as he grew older, preparing about 250 plates downtown each year before eventually being approached about expanding the effort to the Seguin Coliseum. He says the goal was never about the recognition, but simply about meeting a need. Once the event moved to the Seguin Coliseum, automatic partnerships with local businesses, Table, pg. 3

(Seguin) -- The 4th Annual Seguin Youth Career Expo is not only going to be an opportunity for local eighth graders. This year, the event hosted by the Seguin Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) will also be an opportunity for the public to experience it too. The event will be held this Wednesday at the Seguin Events Complex.
Jessica Dersen, SEDC workforce development manager, says for the first time, the Expo will open its doors for general public admission from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. She says the open house invitation extends to homeschool families, private school students, parents, guardians, jobseekers, and any community members eager to learn more about local industries.
“The Seguin Youth Career Expo is a crucial event for Seguin’s future workforce,” said Dersen.“By connecting 8th-grade students with local businesses and professionals, we’re helping them to make informed choices about CTE pathways and future educational opportunities. We hope students are inspired by the range of careers available in their own community.”
More than 900 eighth-grade students from Seguin ISD, Navarro ISD, Marion ISD, Southwest Prep, and local homeschool groups are slated to attend and will gain insights into high-demand skills and explore diverse career paths.
During the afternoon, public sessions will offer handson displays, equipment demos, direct conversations with industry professionals, and an inside look at dozens of
trades and career paths.
Forty local businesses and education providers will be participating on the Expo floor. They include but not limited to Caterpillar, GRMC, CMC Steel, GVEC, the Seguin Fire and Police Departments, Texas Parks and Wildlife, the Science Mill, Texas Lutheran University, Northeast Lakeview College and TEEX. Exhibitors will be showcasing everything from welding gear and public safety equipment to banking tools, engineering activities, and health care technology.
Sergio Jaurrieta, CTE director for Seguin ISD, says for parents, the event is a chance to see what future opportunities exist for their students before they enter high school. He says it doubles as an opportunity to network, learn new career pathways, or explore training and education programs in the region.
“This event is a great way for students to learn about the different career paths available in our community while inspiring them to consider Career and Technical Education programs,” said Jaurrieta. “It’s also a valuable opportunity for businesses to connect with potential future employees.”
The annual Expo is being presented with support from Gold Sponsor Northeast Lakeview College, along with Silver Sponsors Caterpillar and Master’s Electrical Services.
The public open house will be held Wednesday from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Seguin Coliseum. Admission is free.
(Seguin) -- The Open Rewards Program is back for its second year! The Seguin Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) and the Main Street Department are offering an easy and rewarding way for residents to earn cash rewards just by shopping local.
Participating is simple:
1. Download the BluDot Open Rewards app from your app store or visit https://www.bludot.io/open-rewards-seguin-tx
2. Shop at a local business participating in the program.
3. Pay as usual for your purchase.
4. Upload your receipt to the app or link your credit or debit card to automatically import purchases.
5. Once your purchase is verified, you will earn 5 percent cash back rewards in your account.
6. Redeem your rewards by completing a second purchase, then clicking the redeem button and uploading your receipt. After verification, your rewards will be paid out through your preferred payout method.
This system ensures rewards stay within the community, as they can only be used at participating local establishments. All forms of payment including cash qualify for rewards.
The Open Rewards Program will run through January 31, 2026, encouraging shoppers to support Seguin businesses throughout the holiday season.
“The Open Rewards Program is such a simple and fun way for residents to enjoy shopping local while discovering all the great shopping experiences we have right here in town,” said Lindsay Hajek, Assistant Director of Main Street and Destination Seguin.
BluDot, the technology partner behind Open Rewards, has a proven track record in over 100 communities

nationwide and ensures the program operates smoothly, securely, and effectively.
The Seguin Open Rewards Program is funded by the SEDC. Participating businesses can access free promotional materials, including flyers, tent cards, and social media graphics. Businesses interested in these materials can request them by emailing economicdevelopment@ seguintexas.gov.
Let’s shop local and enjoy the rewards of supporting Seguin businesses!

Table, continued.
churches, and volunteers helped it grow into a citywide collaboration.
Larson says for organizers, the event is more about a free meal. He says it’s about community and making sure folks are seen and heard.
“My mom and step-dad, they run a thrift store in Alabama and if you sit there, you will see people that pull up in just shopping carts because they walked and people driving the nicest cars in the world and I said ‘hey, do they need to come to places like this and my mom told me, you can’t judge a person’s need by anything based on what they have. You don’t know what they are going
through and sometimes, it’s not even the fact that they need it, but they need The Table. They need the community. But if we can come together as a community – that we don’t talk enough. We don’t share stories enough. May be you help somebody but you don’t know their story, and I think so often, what can happen is we can drive in our bubble so much – drive the same way to work every day that we don’t even realize that there are people in our city that need this,” said Larson.
This year, The Table is expected to serve at least 2,000 people on Sunday, Nov. 23, 2025, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Seguin Coliseum. The meal will feature barbecue chicken, traditional
Thanksgiving sides, and dessert.
While Larson says they have enough volunteers for the event, community members who still wish to sign up may do so and will be contacted if additional help is needed. Anyone is also welcome to attend, sit with guests, and provide companionship during the meal.
Financial support, however, is always needed. Donations help cover food and supplies.
Those interested in contributing can contact New Life Fellowship Church or Larson directly at 830-3050248. Donations may also be made via the website at thetableseguin.com.
No sign-up is required.

(Undated) -- A new study shows pregnant women in the U.S. face rising danger from gun violence. The study published by JAMA Network Open last week reviewed thousands of homicides across the nation. The review spanned 2018 to 2021 and found that pregnant women had a 37-percent higher risk of being killed with a firearm than non--pregnant women. It also showed over two-thirds of all pregnancy related homicide deaths involved guns. For every one-percent increase in firearm ownership, states saw a six-percent rise in overall homicide and an eight-percent increase in firearm-specific homicide among pregnant women.
(Charlottesville, VA) -- A 47-year-old New Jersey man is the first person known to have died from alpha-gal syndrome, a meat allergy caused by a tick bite. The man died September 2024 after eating a hamburger at a barbecue when he started feeling sick, complaining of stomach pain, vomiting and severe diarrhea. Hours later, he was dead on his bathroom floor. His death was initially a mystery, but a blood test this year revealed the allergic reaction that hadn’t shown up on his autopsy. The University of Virginia School of Medicine reported the man’s cause of death last week. He had bitten by several of the ticks on a family camping trip.
(New York, NY) -- ByHeart, the baby nutrition company tn the middle of a nationwide infant formula recall, is being sued by the parents of at least two babies sickened by an ongoing infant botulism outbreak. The families filed complaints in federal courts against the New York City-based company after their babies contracted the disease. Stephen and Yurany Dexter of Flagstaff, Arizona and Michale and Hanna Everett of Richmond, Kentucky claim that ByHeart is directly responsible for their babies being sickened with botulism. A federal complaint filed in a U.S. District Court in Arizona shows the Dexters say they fed their baby girl ByHeart’s infant formula from July until the child developed signs of infant botulism. A complaint filed in federal court for the Eastern District of Kentucky shows the Everett’s story is similar and that after their infant consumed the formula their child exhibited “disturbing neurological symptoms.”
(San Diego, CA) -- A new study is highlighting a potential link between the use of GLP-1 medications to lower death rates in colon cancer patients. The University of California-San Diego study examined data from more than 68-hundred colon cancer patients. It found that the five-year mortality rate was significantly lower at 15-point-five percent among patients who were using GLP-1 receptor agonists compared to the 37-point-one-percent who were not. The study considered patients’ ages, Body Mass Index scores, cancer severity and other health conditions. Researchers say the findings are observational but signal the need for clinical trials to determine whether the drugs can improve cancer survival rates.
