(Seguin) – This past weekend was a weekend of smiles, first catches, and unforgettable moments. Dozens of families came together as the C.A.S.T. for Kids Foundation hosted a special event celebrating children with special needs and the outdoors.
The local C.A.S.T. for Kids event -- led by local Coordinator April Bustamante -- welcomed 40 families and a number of volunteers for a day centered on inclusion, recreation, and community connection. Children and their families spent the morning fishing alongside volunteers who dedicated their time to ensure each participant had a memorable experience.
Bustamante says the overwhelming support from the community is what helped make the event possible and meaningful.
“Gosh, really, I have no words for how Saturday came together. It was amazing -- an amazing turnout. Families enjoyed themselves. Kids, there was a lot of laughter.

(Seguin) – This Friday morning in Seguin will be about bring togethering a generation of veterans and the community that continues to stand behind them.
Veterans are encouraged to mark their calendars for The Vietnam War Veterans Ceremony scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, March 27 at Memorial Plaza at the Guadalupe County Veterans Outreach Center (VSO). The event honors those who served during the Vietnam Era, from Nov. 1, 1955, through April 30, 1975.
Nancy Russell, Guadalupe County veterans services director, says over the last few years, the annual event has grown into something far more meaningful than its original purpose.
“This is the Vietnam War Veterans event. This is, I believe, the 6th year that it’s been held in Seguin. It’s our 3rd year to have it at the Veterans Outreach Center. So, it’s just important to honor the Vietnam Veterans. One thing I wanted to point out is initially, it was known as being primarily a pinning ceremony for the 50-year commemorative pen that veterans could receive. And by now, most of our Vietnam Veterans have received a pen already. So, this is not just about being a pinning ceremony. It’s a time to gather and Vietnam Veterans can come themselves or people, family and friends can just come to honor them. We will be doing some of the pinning ceremony for those who have not already gotten one. But I’m just saying there’s, there’s more to
it than just being a pinning ceremony. We’re also having the Naval JR ROTC from Seguin High School. They’re going to perform. I believe two of their drill teams are performing this year, to honor the Vietnam Veterans -getting the youth involved. And then, we’ll also present our 2026 Honor Wall Recipient, who is Luis Gonzalez, CSM (Ret.), U.S. Army. He lives in Cibolo. So, we look forward to doing that as well,” said Russell.
Russell says events like this are especially important in a county with a large veteran population.
“Guadalupe County has a higher percentage than many counties when it comes to veterans. We have over 20,000 veterans. I cannot off the top of my head say what percentage that is, but it’s higher than many counties. And so, we have a lot of veterans -- a lot of them are out there and not really interacting as much as they could. And we want them to feel appreciated by the community. So this is a great opportunity to have the veterans and the community, attend and the Veterans Outreach Center is always having events and opportunities for veterans and their families,” said Russell.
Beyond honoring their service, Russell says organizers are hoping that friends and family members of these veterans will do their part to ensure their participation this Friday.

Anglers, continued.
It was just amazing and a great experience for the community, especially for our kids with special needs,” said Bustamante.
The strong turnout reflected months of planning as well as a desire to “bring more inclusive opportunities to the area.” Bustamante, who attended a similar event in Rockport last year with her son Christopher, says she was inspired to bring the event to Seguin.
After returning home, she says she quickly connected with Seguin ISD’s outdoor learning center and began organizing the event. She says just within just a few days, enough sponsorships were secured to cover the full cost. She says a large part of that was thanks to 8-year-old Christopher, who helped raise much of the dollars himself.
That day, participants and families left behind some words of heartfelt thanks and appreciation. Some described their child catching their first fish. Others thanked a firefighter who assisted with one of the anglers. One parent event reflected on the simple but powerful experience of “hearing laughter as their child enjoyed fishing for the first time.”
The event included lunch and an awards ceremony where the kids received recognition, including fun fishing gear.
Bustamante says keeping the event free will be a key part of its mission and hopes to already lock down sponsorships for next year.
“Yes, we will continue to do this once a year or in the spring. The goal is to start looking for fundraising sponsorships throughout the year to complete that goal that we need to meet, to get everything paid for -- for these participants because everything is free. The pole, the tackle box, bait, shirts, caps, awards, plaques, all of it is all included. So, we want the families just to come out and have a good time and not have to worry about spending

anything because we know that having children with special needs -- it’s hard financially. So, we want to give them that opportunity to come out and enjoy the day,” said Bustamante.
The C.A.S.T. for Kids Foundation is a national nonprofit, which hosts similar events across the country, “all aimed at enriching the lives of children with special needs through the sport of fishing.”
Bustamante’s aim at bringing a quality of life to children with special needs is no surprise as it also reflects in her leadership a few years ago to
“We’ve been here 3 years, the Veterans Outreach Center, and we still have veterans in our community who don’t know we’re here, and this is a great time for people to give someone a ride or encourage them to come. Everything is on the Guadalupe County website if they
establish the Seguin Little League’s Challenger League.
In this case, she says the event provided another rare opportunity –an opportunity to experience fishing.
“It was a chance of a lifetime for them. They don’t get that opportunity very often, if ever,” said Bustamante.

want to look at that and pass the information along or just call someone they know. It’s open to, of course, any veteran and the, the purpose of this event is to honor the Vietnam era veterans. And we just encourage as much participation as possible,” said Russell.
The Veterans Outreach Center is located at 205 E. Weinert St.
