(Seguin) -- For Gary Gutierrez, this week’s appointment as Seguin ISD’s new athletic director and head football coach was more than a career move. It was a homecoming.
The Seguin ISD Board of Trustees officially approved Gutierrez’s hiring during a special meeting Tuesday, ending months of anticipation about who would lead the Matador football program. The move comes after former AD and Head Football Coach Craig Dailey announced that he
would be transitioning into a different role within the district.
Before building what district officials say has been a successful coaching career across Texas, Guiterrez served as the offensive coordinator at Seguin High School from 2003 to 2006.
Gutierrez shared with the Seguin Daily News about what returning to Seguin means to him and his family.

Guadalupe County elections administrator resigns, search for her replacement now underway
(Seguin) – It’s back to the drawing board for The Guadalupe County Election Commission as it begins the hiring process for a new Guadalupe County Election Administrator.
This vacancy comes after the recent and abrupt resignation of Cristian ‘Cris” Pérez García, who had been selected for the role by the Elections Commission in March 2026. Although she was on hand to oversee the Tuesday, March 26 Primary Runoff Election, it was already noted that Garcia had announced her decision the day before.
The Election Commission reports that County Clerk Teresa Kiel will oversee operations and manage services within the elections office during the transition period maintaining continuity, to ensure uninterrupted operations. This will maintain the integrity of voting while the hiring process moves forward.
Officials say The Election Administrator is responsible for overseeing federal, state, and local elections within the county, supervising staff and temporary
election workers, to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations as outlined in the Texas Election Code.
The Committee expresses appreciation for Pérez García’s service, professionalism, and expertise during her time with the County. They especially recognized her assistance with multiple elections and administrative operations.
“We appreciate the election teams’ efforts and commitment to managing our county elections during this busy season. As we move forward, our focus remains on the hiring process while ensuring the elections office continues to effectively serve our residents.” said Kiel.

TLU is shifting into summer gear
(Seguin) --TLU is inviting the public along as it shifts into summer gear.
Texas Lutheran University is inviting both students and the community to take advantage of a variety of activities, camps, and recreational opportunities across campus.
Tracy Donley, TLU director of communications and content, says the university remains active throughout the summer months with programs designed for all ages.
“TLU is going to be busier than ever this summer. We have all kinds of fun things and ways for the community to come and enjoy the campus,” said Donley.
Donely says of course, one of the biggest draws during the summer months is the Mabee Pool.
“As usual is our Mabee Pool. The pool offers memberships for families and individuals so you can go to our website and get a membership and come and enjoy the nice cool water at Mabee Pool,” said Donley.

Donley says the university is also offering several opportunities for young athletes to sharpen their skills over the summer.
“We also have all kinds of summer sports camps, and you can get more information about those on our
website as well,” said Donley.
Summer sports camps across campus facilities include volleyball, soccer, football, and basketball.

Donley says musically inclined students also have an opportunity to continue learning during the summer through TLU’s Summer Music Academy.
Donley says the academy offers a valuable experience for student musicians at all skill levels. Plus, she says the program focuses on instruction, performance, and building friendships among participants.
“The Summer Music Academy is for band, choir, and orchestra students in middle school and high school and all different levels, and it is a fantastic opportunity for musicians, said Donley.

In addition to university-run programs, the Science Mill will return and will host four weeks of summer science camps on the TLU campus. The camps will provide students and teachers opportunities to explore subjects ranging from chemistry and biology to robotics and engineering through hands-on learning experiences.

“This is a dream come true. This is one of the places that foundationally grew me as a coach, and I learned how to be a coach and a teacher here. And so, this is a special place. It’s been a special place for me. This is a place where I met my wife here, not in Seguin ISD, but, you know, we started dating here. We’re married. It’s full circle. So, this is just a special time and I’m looking forward to rejoining the community,” said Gutierrez.
The veteran coach returns after 13 years at John Jay High School in San Antonio, where he guided the Mustangs to a district championship and a 9-2 record during the 2025 season. Along the way, he earned recognition as the 2025 District 14-5A Coach of the Year and was named a finalist for Dave Campbell’s Texas Football 6A Coach of the Year in 2023.
He will also serve as a head coach for the 2027 San Antonio Sports All-Star Football Game.
Yet on Tuesday, Gutierrez made it clear that wins and championships are only part of what excites him about returning to Matador Nation.
Gutierrez says his priority is building relationships.
“I think the number one thing is I want everybody here to know that I want to be here. I’m excited to work with the Matadors and the Matador community. And the other thing is bringing my son to a community here to learn ---Matador traditions is extremely awesome to me. And so I want everybody here to know that I’m going to love them, trust them, and I want to earn their trust and know that we’re going to do things the right way. And as we do that, we’ll grow as a team, as a community and build
Matador Pride,” said Gutierrez.
Football has long been a family affair for the Gutierrez household. His oldest son is currently a quarterback at the Naval Academy, while his daughter works with the football program at the University of the Incarnate Word. Now, his youngest son, Miles, a junior, will also become part of the Matador program as the two walk into this brand-new chapter. His wife Patricia is also said to have been a coach and currently works for Northside ISD.
In fact, the transition will happen immediately. Gutierrez Tuesday night joked that while he starts his new job, his son will also be getting started right alongside him – Wednesday morning.
“He will have his first day at Camp Matador, summer strength and conditioning camp tomorrow morning. So, I’m looking forward to getting him into some Matador gear and getting him acclimated and assimilated into the Matador program and the kids and the community. And so just super excited for him because I fondly have memories of Matador Stadium and games and the community and the support systems. And so I’m looking forward to him getting to experience that,” said Gutierrez.
In recommending him to the board, Seguin ISD Superintendent Dr. Jack Lee shared how excited he was to see Coach Gutierrez in action as he works to “build strong programs, support coaches, and develop the student-athletes who will represent our district both on and off the field.”
Gutierrez has 26 years of experience in education and coaching, having also worked in several other districts including Levelland ISD, Houston ISD, Aldine ISD, and Calhoun County ISD.

Ty Joseph Machado, age 24 of Seguin, passed away on May 24, 2026. Ty was born on January 28, 2002, in New Braunfels, Texas to Catherine Michelle (Steffens) and Joseph “Joey” Anthony Machado.
Ty graduated from Navarro High School in 2020. He loved art, fishing, cooking, music, traveling, his dogs Rosie and Walker and spending time with his friends and cousins who meant the world to him.
At a young age Ty enjoyed competition BBQ that allowed him to travel the country and appear on Food Network along with many accolades and even World Championship titles before the age of 16.
Most recently he was employed by Encompass Services where he served as Crew Chief surveying across the country and his family is eternally grateful for them and the support shown at this time.

Charles Julius “Charlie” Willmann, Sr., age 101 of Seguin, passed away on April 25, 2026. Charles was born on March 31, 1925, in Seguin, Texas to Ethelda (Behrendt) and Charles Willmann, and grew up on his family farm in Seguin.
Charlie is preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 years, Patricia “Patty” Willmann, his parents, and his sister, Ethel Willard and her husband D. B.
Survivors include his children, Charles “Chuck” J. Willmann, Jr. and wife Kay, Daniel N. Willmann and wife Carol and Jennie Willmann Moseley and husband Mike; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchild; other loving family members and a host of friends.
Ty is survived by his parents, Michelle and Joey Machado; twin sister Taya Allert and husband Aaron, Fiancé Heather Faber, Paternal Grandparents Joe & Sylvia Machado, Maternal grandparents Cathy Ball, Terrie Edwards, and Robert Steffens, aunts, uncles, cousins, and so many other loving, extended family and friends.
Visitation will begin on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at 9:30 a.m. at Living Waters Church, followed by a memorial service celebrating Ty’s life at 10:30 with Pastor Jeremy Roy and Pastor Paul Mason officiating. Following the service, a Celebration of Ty’s life will continue at 12:30, with a BBQ and all the trimmings at the family home.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dorothy Wosnig, aged 95, lifelong resident of Guadalupe County. She was born to Alex and Annie (Hagemann) Weniger in Seguin on March 22, 1931.
She grew up in Seguin and graduated from Seguin High School in 1949. She married Kermit Wosnig on July 12, 1952, and moved to Marion where she resided for the rest of her life.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Kermit, brothers and sisters-in-law Wallace and Lucille Weniger, Frank and Nelda Weniger, brotherin- law Morris Wosnig, grandsons Jesse Collins and Kermit Mikolajczyk.

Dorothy was well loved by all who were privileged to know her. She was a devout Christian, and a diligent worker having retired from two careers (first from civil service at Randolph AFB, then as an LVN for several years. She was a previous city councilwoman in Marion, she served on the committee to plan Marion’s anniversary celebration, and was active in the Marion Community Library activities, and Marion Historical Society. She achieved multiple awards in her life including Sustained Superior Performance while working at Randolph.
She was a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, and the Guadalupe County EE Club. Most importantly, her priorities were her Christian values and family, as she served as a stellar role model of how to live a successful life. She will be sorely missed by all her who knew her.
The family would like to thank Eden Hill and Eden Hospice for their superior care, and for her daughters Doreen and Karen for caring for her at home in her final days where she was able to pass peacefully on the family farm where she spent so many years.
Visitation will be held at 9:00 am on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel followed by the funeral at 10:00 am. with the Reverend Jeremy Roy officiating. Interment will follow in St. John Lutheran Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Gerth Celebration Center.
Serving as pallbearers will be Dorothy’s grandsons, Dallas Mikolajczyk, Joshua Collins, Michael David Lucas, Garrett Lucas, Tyler Brooks, and Bowen Brooks.

Arizona Resident Dies From Hantavirus
(Undated) -- An Arizona resident is dead after contracting Hantavirus. That’s according to Mohave County health officials, which noted that the individual had the Sin Nombre strain. That’s different from the recent Andes virus on the MV Hodius cruise ship. Officials note the Sin Nombre virus is typically found in rural southwestern states and is not known to spread from person to person. Infection usually takes place after breathing in dust contaminated with rodent fluids or nesting materials.
Andes Hantavirus Patient Returns To Oregon
(Portland, OR) -- An Oregon resident exposed to the deadly Andes strain of Hantavirus on a cruise ship has returned home. That person has been in a Nebraska quarantine and will remain in home quarantine through June 21st, which is 42 days after their return to the U.S. on March 10th. The Oregon Health Authority is monitoring that case.
Study Links Weight-Loss Drugs With Lower Breast Cancer Risk
(Philadelphia, PA) -- Weight-loss drugs are being linked to lower rates of breast cancer. A new study out this week looked at more than 100-thousand women over the past few years and found those who took GLP-1 drugs such as Wegovy and Ozempic had a 30-percent lower risk of breast cancer. The researchers at the University of Pennsylvania point out, however, that the observational study does not prove that weight-loss drugs reduce cancer risk. The researchers are now seeking funding for a clinical trial on whether GLP-1 drugs can decrease breast cancer cases among high risk women.
Alzheimer’s And Brain Awareness Month
(Undated) -- June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month. Some seven million people in the U.S. are living with Alzheimer’s disease, a number expected to double in the next 25 years. There’s no cure yet for the neurological disorder that gradually destroys memory and the ability to live a normal life.
Summer Reading Experience Underway at Seguin Public Library
The Seguin Public Library is inviting readers of all ages to participate in its 2026 Summer Reading Experience, “Unearth a Story.” The free program features books, activities, special events, and opportunities to win dino-mite prizes throughout the summer. The Rotary Club of Seguin is hosting its Golden Ticket Raffle drawing on Thursday, June 4, 2026, with proceeds benefiting local high school scholarships and community grant programs. Only 150 tickets will be sold at $100 each, and the winner will choose between a trip for two to the 2027 Masters Golf Tournament in Augusta, Georgia, or the 2026 Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta in New Mexico. Geronimo Lions Club First Friday Feast
The Geronimo Lions Club will host its First Friday Feast from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 5. Guests can enjoy a hand-cut ribeye steak or fried battered cod dinner while supporting a great cause. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Department Santa Sheriff program. The evening will also feature live music by the Brushy Creek Boys and recognition of two First Responder Honorees from the York Creek Volunteer Fire Department and the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Department. Hoffmann Reunion
Descendants of Christopf Bennard (Heinrich) Hoffmann and Friedricke H.P. Art Show Honors Military Veterans

Crayton Cemetery Historical Marker Dedication
The Guadalupe County Historical Commission will dedicate a Guadalupe County Historical Marker at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 13, at the Crayton Cemetery. The cemetery is located on Lehmann Road between Hermann Road and Offermann Hill Road in Guadalupe County. The public is invited to attend the ceremony recognizing the historical significance of the cemetery and its place in the county’s history.
Father Daughter Dance
The Seguin Police Department is hosting its annual Father Daughter Dance from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, June 13 at the Seguin Event Complex, located at 950 South Austin Street. This year’s coastal and beach-themed event invites fathers or father figures and their daughters to enjoy an evening of dancing, fun and lasting memories. Junior Lifeguard Program
The Seguin Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a Junior Lifeguard Class from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, June 25 at the Seguin Wave Pool, located at 1 Wave Pool Drive. The class is open to participants ages 9 to 15 and will teach basic first-aid, CPR, water safety, rescue techniques, communication skills and lifeguard responsibilities. Participants must be able to swim and complete a swim-tread-swim sequence. This is not a learn-to-swim program and does not provide official lifeguard or CPR certification.
