Seguin mourns the loss of respected physician, community leader Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- Seguin is mourning the loss of a beloved family physician and pillar of the local community. Dr. James C. Lee, who spent more than three decades healing and guiding local healthcare efforts, died Monday. Robert Haynes, the CEO of Guadalupe Regional Medical Center, says early on in his practice, Dr. Lee was quickly known not only for his clinical expertise, but for the compassion and respect he extended to every patient. “Throughout his practice and in those days the doctors came to the hospital and made rounds to the patients and so forth and he had a quiet demeanor about him and a sincerity that you admired and even at the end of his career of practicing medicine, he made the point of finding a physician that would come into this community and care for his patients so that they were left with a provider and you have to have a lot of respect for someone like that,” said Haynes. Haynes says even after practicing, Dr. Lee remained instrumental in shaping the landscape of healthcare in Guadalupe County. “He got involved and stayed involved. He was the founding member of the foundation that was established for the hospital in 1999, and he
was a member of that foundation board – chair of the finance committee of that board until the day he passed. As you know, he was chair of the hospital board which he served on for greater than 12 years. In an amazing way, he did not let any physical obstacle that he had slow him down. I can tell you, he was at our last board meeting, and he made sure that we went through our agenda and did all the things that we needed to do. That’s just who he was,” Haynes said. Dr. Lee’s leadership, however, extended far
beyond medicine. He was a 50-year member of the Knights of Columbus and a 30-year member of the Seguin Rotary Club. As a past president of the Seguin Chamber of Commerce, he helped drive local economic growth including key efforts such as helping to bring Walmart to the area. Haynes says people don’t get to meet individuals like Dr. Lee every day and says his passing leaves both a personal and professional void. “We all like to have, in the business that we do, we like to have a calm voice and when someone speaks, everybody listens. So, we lose that, but he was also wise enough to ensure that he was surrounded by people that carry that forward. So, personally, when you lose a mentor like him – you lose someone who can get you through challenges that we have to get through in healthcare and that will be missed,” said Haynes. His funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at St. James Catholic Church. Dr. Lee leaves behind his wife, Janice Lee along with daughters Crystal Lee Baker, Cynthia Lee Franson, Catherine Lee Fahey and Carol Lee Sobey. Dr. Lee was 78.
