Lake Placid water level drop attributed to dam gate adjustment

(Seguin) — Residents along Lake Placid were alarmed Sunday after the lake level dropped rapidly, but local emergency management officials say there is no major cause for concern.

According to local emergency management officials, they were advised that one of the dam gates was lowered farther than normal. Officials say the gate was eventually raised back to its normal position, and the situation was under control.

It dramatically dropped the lake level on Placid in a short period of time, and reportedly increased flows along Meadow Lake downstream.

Emergency officials say the temporary change in the gate’s position caused the noticeable drop in the lake level, but stressed that there was no emergency reported and the dam is now operating as expected.

Many lake dwellers took to social media to complain that they weren’t notified about the change and the potential danger associated with the significant change in the flow.

Officials say they will continue to monitor the situation, but residents should not be alarmed by the temporary change in water levels.

Store owner arrested after allegedly pointing a BB gun at customer

(Seguin) -- A disagreement over the price of an item at a Seguin convenience store recently landed the store owner behind bars on a charge of aggravated assault.

Seguin Police say officers were dispatched at approximately 4:48 p.m. Saturday, July 11, to a convenience store in the 1000 block of West Court Street after receiving a report of a person with a weapon.

According to investigators, a verbal argument broke out between a customer and the store owner, 53-year-old Rosa Tejada of Manchaca. Police say the customer was leaving the business when Tejada allegedly displayed what appeared to be a revolver and pointed it at the customer near the

The customer told officers she “believed the gun was real and feared for her life.”

During the investigation,

officers determined the weapon was actually a BB gun that closely resembled a real revolver. Police say the BB gun did not have the orange safety markings commonly used to identify it as a non-firearm and that its appearance was convincing enough that a reasonable person would have believed it to be a real handgun.

Based on the investigation and the victim’s belief that she faced imminent bodily injury, Tejada was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon. She was transported to the Guadalupe County Jail without incident.

The investigation remains ongoing.

New Braunfels Food Bank to host job fair with local employers

(New Braunfels) – Area residents looking for work will have an opportunity to connect with employers this week during a job fair hosted by the New Braunfels Food Bank and Workforce Solutions Alamo.

The hiring event is scheduled for Wednesday, July 22, from 9 a.m. until noon. It will be held upstairs at the New Braunfels Food Bank, located at 1620 S. Seguin Ave. in New Braunfels.

Job seekers will have the chance to meet with multiple local employers who are currently hiring for a variety of positions. Organizers encourage attendees to bring several copies of their resume and dress professionally to make a positive first impression with prospective employers.

The event is free and open to anyone seeking employment or exploring new career opportunities in the area.

Organizers say the job fair is designed to connect local businesses with qualified job candidates while helping strengthen the regional workforce.

Together for Good: TLU’s Dr. Ruth Eby featured on podcast

Ray Charles Franklin Jr, age 56 of Seguin, passed on July 12, 2026. Ray was born on March 26, 1970, in Seguin, Texas to Ray Franklin Sr and Patricia (Gonzales) Franklin.

Ray is preceded in death by his parents and Ronnie Cleve Franklin Sr.

Lettuce Sample Returned False Positive Cyclospora Reading

(Salina, CA) -- A lettuce sample from Taylor Farms that tested positive for cyclospora was a false positive, according to the FDA. The company said Friday it was voluntarily recalling iceberg lettuce grown in central Mexico after it was linked to the current outbreak of gastrointestinal issues. The FDA said Sunday that after further review, no samples have tested positive for the parasite. More than 16-hundred people have fallen ill. Health experts say it could still take weeks to control the outbreak.

Dance Program Shown To Reduce Depression And Anxiety

(Oxford, England) -- Dance lessons reduce depression symptoms in young adults. That’s according to a new study by the University of Oxford and the Oxford Health. The study involved a salsa dance eight week program for 18 to 24 year olds who had mild to moderate severe depression symptoms. Research shows those who took part had a significant reduction in social anxiety and depression compared to the control group. The authors of the study say this shows social dance can become part of the toolkit for supporting mental health along with treatment.

CDC Data Shows Hospital Infection Rate Lowered

(Atlanta GA) -- There’s new data showing a reduction in healthcare related infections in hospitals across the United States. The CDC says in 2023, about one in ever 38 patients hospitalized on any given day had at least one healthcare-associated infection. That’s a lower ratio than the one in every 31 patients back in 2015. About 518 thousand healthcare-associated infections were noted in U.S. hospitals in 2023. The acting CDC director says more needs to be done but this effort is notable in its progress on a very challenging issue.

Pillsbury Recalls More Than 730,000 Rolls Sold through Walmart bakeries

(Undated) -- Pillsbury is recalling more than 730-thousand Pillsbury Bread rolls because they may contain glass. The recall includes more than 31-hundred cases of Hard Roll Dough, and more than 12-hundred cases of Kaiser Roll Dough. The product was not sold directly to consumers, but rather to Walmart for sale at its In-Store Bakeries across the country. Walmart says all affected product has been removed.
