Texas Lineman’s Rodeo competition returns to Seguin this weekend

WEEKEND EDITION

TODAY

City of Seguin electric department prepares to compete Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- Linemen across Texas work around the clock— rain or shine—to keep the power flowing to homes and businesses. Once a year, these dedicated professionals gather to showcase their skills in a spirited competition: the Texas Lineman’s Rodeo. This year, more than 150 linemen from electric cooperatives, municipal utilities, and investor-owned utilities will converge on Seguin, for the 24th Annual Texas Lineman’s Rodeo, taking place July 18–19, 2025 at Nolte Island Park. Six journeymen and four apprentices from the City of Seguin’s Electric Department are preparing to represent the city at this year’s event. For the first time, Seguin will field two journeyman teams competing in events such as the Disconnect and Arrestor Changeout (URD), Journeyman Hurtman Rescue, Journeyman Pole Climb, and Double Bell

Change. The journeyman competitors include AJ Martinez, Eli Santos, Taylor Ross, Dylan Rodgers, Nathan Thiry, and Ryan Bustamante. Apprentices Steven Eldridge, JR Cruz, Tristin Morstad, and Alex Duarte will participate in Tool Inspection, Pole Climb, Hurtman Rescue, and the Obstacle Pole event. Apprentices will also complete a written exam as part of the competition. City officials say the Texas Lineman’s Rodeo provides a unique, family-friendly opportunity for line workers to demonstrate their skills in a competitive setting that closely mirrors real-world scenarios. For many families, it’s the first chance to witness firsthand the technical knowledge, physical demands, and safety protocols involved in the job. Rodeo, pg. 3

An honored goodbye Guadalupe County Fire Rescue and the Seguin Fire Department stood together over IH-10 Wednesday afternoon to honor the life of 7-year-old Virginia Hollis. Hollis made her journey home from Camp Mystic to Bellville. As her procession passed through the county, officials with the Seguin Police Department and Guadalupe County Sheriff ’s Office gathered along the highway with members of the community as a show of respect for the young girl’s life Courtesy photo Guadalupe County Fire Rescue
