Dollar burgers back on the grill for Texas Food Connection Day

WEEKEND EDITION

TODAY

Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- What can you buy for a dollar these days? Well, this Friday, that dollar can snag you both a lunch and a side of conversation in the Guadalupe County Farm Bureau parking lot. The dollar burger sale returns this Friday in celebration of Texas Food Connection Day, “a statewide effort to connect farmers and ranchers directly with the people they feed.” The annual event was formally recognized this Tuesday with a signed proclamation by the Guadalupe County Commissioners Court. Explaining more about Friday’s statewide celebration was Guadalupe County Farm Bureau board members Keith Huebinger and Larry McKee. Huebinger says it is important to acknowledge the impact of agriculture both locally and statewide. “Texas leads the nations in the

number of farms and ranches with 230,000 farms and ranches covering more than 125 million acres. Texas is a national leader in cattle, cotton, hay, sheep, goats and horses,” said Huebinger. Modern farming, according to Huebinger, has also dramatically increased efficiency over the decades. “Today, one farmer in the United States feeds 169 people versus 50 years ago when one farmer fed just 26. This also allows us for a smaller carbon footprint,” said Huebinger. Despite those advances and a surplus in food, he says producers continue to face economic challenges. “We farmers and ranchers continue to see higher input costs for feed, fertilizer, fuel, chemicals, seed, equipment, labor and interest expense all while commodity prices have not kept pace,” said Huebinger.
