(Seguin) -- A longstanding church tradition that over the years has become a community wide celebration is making its big return to Seguin.
After years on hiatus, Our Lady of Guadalupe Church is bringing back its beloved Labor Day weekend Bazaar.
Event Chairperson
Eddie Davila says the two-night celebration is set for Saturday, August 30, and Sunday, August 31, at the Seguin Events Complex.
“This is an annual event that the Our Lady of
Guadalupe Catholic Church has had for 80 or 90 years now and for the first time in its history, this is the first time that we had to take a break due to the COVID pandemic back in 2020. We were set up to go. We waited till the last minute to really call it and not have it in 2020 because we really thought that we were going to pull it off in that September. But we have not had the event since 2019 and let me tell you, we’ve gotten a lot of push to bring it back. We have a lot of excitement and energy coming back to make this thing a success and so I think it’s a good thing that we went on a bit of a hiatus –Bazaar, pg. 3

(Geronimo) -- The Navarro ISD is zeroing in on its focus when it comes to the success of its students. That’s according to Navarro ISD Superintendent Mandy Epley following the release of the Texas Education Agency’s 2025 A–F accountability ratings in which the district earned a letter grade of B.
The district maintained consistent performance, with three of its four campuses rated a B. All earning B’s were Navarro Elementary, Navarro Intermediate, and Navarro High School. Navarro Junior High, however, received a C.
Sharing more of its interpretation of this letter grade is Dr. Epley who says the district views accountability as a tool for growth, not fear.
“I always tell people that when you look at accountability, it’s not something to fear. I look at it as a visit to the doctor and when we go to the doctor and say I am not feeling well or I think there might be problems, but I don’t want you to take my temperature. I don’t want you to take a blood sample, but you better tell me what’s wrong and you better give me some things that I need to do to get well. That wouldn’t work and we know it won’t work so we do participate in the testing as a form of diagnosis, but it is not all that we look at. We do our own formative assessment throughout the year with math testing, nationally for us to compare our student progress with the nation not just with Texas but we know that STAAR in its current format is something we do here in Texas, and we participate in that. I’m a firm believer and communicate that with my leadership team that the score should take care of itself,” said Dr. Epley.
The A–F system evaluates schools in three categories: Student Achievement, School Progress, and Closing the Gaps.
Dr. Epley explains that Navarro’s focus is on meeting each student’s individual needs and ensuring teachers have the tools to respond effectively.
“If we know our kids by name and need and we are addressing those needs – we are getting the professional learning that our staff needs to target those needs and then we are assessing – how are we doing? What do we need to improve? What are those small group opportunities where we can pull kids that are struggling? What are those opportunities to accelerate kids who have shown mastery and they need to move to the next level? And that is a very difficult thing to do but we are committed to doing it and we are continuing to align the curriculum. We only used to have multiple choice questions, now the test is actually online for all students. Young children are having to type essays on a computer and so there are several skills sets that have to happen to be prepared for that test and so that’s a big part of
what we have moved forward in,” said Dr. Epley.
While the district saw strong scores among its advanced students, Dr. Epley noted the challenges that the district faces at the junior high level.
“Where we have seen some struggles is in our 7th grade --on grade level math. We have some amazing results with our 7th grade mastery math – advanced students who took the 8th grade test. They did exceptional. But that on grade level struggled a bit so we have done some staffing changes. We’ve done some training and so we will be looking at those math scores. We are also looking at our 8th grade that struggled in science, math and social studies. And a big part of testing whether its math, science, social studies or reading is having a great foundation in reading so going back and looking at our early childhood and our intermediate and really working and focusing on those phonetic skills,” said Epley.
Epley says while the Navarro ISD is proud of its B, it will continue to strive for excellence.
“We feel like the B as a whole is certainly the assessed grade, but we are competitive here. We want the best for our kids. We’d love to see that A and that comes from us working together as a team and ultimately not just making sure that score on that test is great but really living our mission which is that our students are prepared for the world,” said Dr. Epley.
Among the most notable and standout achievements is Navarro High School’s Distinction Designation for Academic Growth. District officials say this prestigious recognition places Navarro High School in the top 25 percent of its comparison group, and proudly ranks it among the top 5 out of 40 schools in this group.
The Navarro ISD invites the community to “explore” the detailed ratings for all school systems and campuses by visiting Texas Schools Search, or TX Research Portal.

(New Berlin) -- After recent concerns about funding for volunteer fire departments, the New Berlin Sausage Festival is giving the community a chance to do its part by enjoying a day of food and fun and all while supporting the New Berlin Fire Rescue and the New Berlin Community Club.
The community of New Berlin is gearing up for its annual Sausage Festival, set for Sunday, August 31 at the New Berlin Community Center from 11 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.
Sausage plates will be available for $15 starting at 11 a.m. Activities throughout the day include bingo from 12:30 to 4 p.m., a silent auction from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and a live auction at 5 p.m. Other activities include a country store, games, and a raffle.
The Kinder Tanzer German Dancers will also be performing, bringing a “traditional cultural flair” to the celebration. The event will wrap up with a free dance beginning at 8 p.m. This year’s live music will be provided by Clint Taft & The Buckwild Band.
The New Berlin Community Center is located at 8815 FM 775.
Bazaar, continued.
not for the reasons we did – but the fact that it showed us how much this community really really cherished this event annually,” said Davila.
The OLG Bazaar runs from 6 p.m. to midnight both nights and is free and open to the public. Davila says families can also expect the return of some great food, carnival rides, bingo, live music, and a silent auction.
“As always, we are going to have our food booths. You will have everything from gorditas to turkey legs to corn and all the good stuff that you can add five to 10 pounds during a weekend without going on a cruise and we are also going to have carnival rides for the kids,” said Davila. “We are also going to have a silent auction both nights and then in the coliseum, we are also going to have bingo both nights from 6 to 9 p.m. There’s going to be lots of things going on and the best part, it’s all free. You don’t have to pay to get in.”
Entertainment is always a big draw at the bazaar, and Davila says this year is no exception.
“We will have three bands each night. We have a good lineup with some very popular bands — what’s cool is these bands typically call us to see if we have the event,” said Davila.
The lineup this year includes Los Desperadoz, David Farias y La Tropa F and The Frank Rangel and
the Boys Band on Saturday followed by Jaime y Los Chamacos -- LA 45, Bobby G & Le Deuce, and DJ Andrew Belmarez on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Davila says one of the most anticipated traditions is the big raffle drawing. He says this year’s grand prize is a brand-new 2025 Ford Bronco Sport.
“We are going to raffle off a 2025 Ford Bronco Sport this year. Yes, we are going to have gift cards in the amount of $3,000 to $1000 to $500 but the main grand prize is going to be a 2025 Ford Bronco Sport that is going to have zero miles. If you are not able to make the event, buy a raffle ticket and they are only $10 a piece. You can get them at the Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church office off of Krezdorn or call 830-379-4338 or if you know somebody – one of our good old Catholics that attend mass there, they can tell you where to get them or they can sell them to you themselves,” said Davila. “We will sell them that Saturday evening the 30th and also that Sunday the 31st up until about 9:30 p.m. because the raffle will be drawn right at 10 o’clock on Aug. 31st at the event. So, if you win, you will want to be there at the event to drive off in that vehicle.”
Proceeds from the event go to support a number of church programs which include the awarding of several college scholarships to local youth. Again, the event is slated for Saturday and Sunday at the Seguin Events Complex located at 905 S. Austin St.

(Silver Spring, MD) -- The FDA is approving an updated COVID-19 vaccine, but only for seniors 65 and up and for people with underlying health conditions. The CDC is recommending the shot for everyone six months and up, so health experts say that’s creating confusion about who should get vaccinated. Secretary of Health Robert Kennedy Junior has questioned the safety of the mRNA vaccines, even though the scientific community says they’re safe. Both Pfizer and Moderna’s vaccines, which are awaiting FDA approval, target the LP-8-point-1 strain. There’s been a rise in COVID cases involving that and other new strains, especially in the South and West where many kids have headed back to school.
(Cleveland, OH) -- A new study shows the benefits of using new AI technology to help manage type two diabetes. Dr. Kevin Pantalone led the research at the Cleveland clinic and says the technology is linked to an app on the cellphone and tracks in real time someone’s blood sugar, weight, blood pressure, and physical activity. Based off that information, the app will recommend food choices and exercises. The study shows most who used the technology after 12 months were able to reach better numbers and lose weight.
(Undated) -- A study shows about two-thirds of women in their child-bearing years have an increased risk for birth defects because of a lifestyle that they have the ability to change. Researchers looked at data from about 54 hundred younger women between 2007 and 2020. It shows 66 percent of them had things like diabetes, tobacco smoke exposure, obesity and food security as risk factors contributing to birth defects. The study was reported Tuesday in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.
