MADD offering services, support during National Crime Victims’ Week Darren Dunn

(Seguin) -- A Texas-based non-profit group is standing with victims and their families as part of this week’s designation as National Crime Victims’ Rights Week. Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is shining a spotlight on victim’s rights during this time. MADD National Ambassador Prisca Patrick says MADD wants victims to know that they are supported and that the have rights to help them along the way. “National Crime Victims’ Rights Week is a week where we celebrate victims of impaired driving and also share resources with victims. Impaired driving crashes are crimes that shatter lives and devastate communities. Yet too often,

people overlook their criminal nature and devastating consequences. During National Crime Victims’ Week, MADD is reaffirming this commitment to those impacted by impaired driving, ensuring they have access to support, legal resources and advocacy to seek accountability and compensation. This year’s theme is Kinship, Connecting and Healing. It serves as a national call to action, reminding us that no victim should have to suffer alone,” said Patrick. Patrick says the services and support are not just limited to MADD. She says crime victims have a wide range of services available to them. MADD, pg. 3

(Seguin) -- Navarro ISD officials say two students were taken into custody after a weapon was confiscated on the Navarro High School campus. Superintendent Mandy Epley issued a statement Wednesday morning explaining the situation. Dr. Epley says the incident occurred around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, when a student alerted school officials that another student appeared to have a firearm inside a backpack. Epley says that Principal Clay Scarborough and campus law enforcement immediately detained the student in question and initiated a campus-wide "Hold" procedure. Despite the suspect's denial, security footage and a thorough search of the campus resulted in the discovery of a loaded pistol concealed within the backpack. Epley says the "Hold" was subsequently lifted, and the student responsible for bringing the weapon to school was arrested by the Guadalupe County Sheriff 's Office. She says the student will face criminal charges and disciplinary action, including mandatory expulsion as outlined in the Navarro ISD Student Code of Conduct. Following further investigation, a second student was also arrested and charged with tampering with evidence for their role in concealing the backpack containing the firearm. This student will also face disciplinary action. "This situation underscores the critical importance of our 'See Something, Say Something' initiative,” said Epley. Gun, pg. 3
