Big Red Barn opens doors for Country Christmas Darren Dunn
(Seguin) -Country Christmas is back. The annual holiday tradition makes its return this weekend to the Texas Agricultural Education and Heritage Center -- better known as the Big Red Barn. Board Member Ronald Heinemeyer says Country Christmas offers something for everyone. “This event is going to take place Friday and Saturday, Dec. 8-9. The doors will open at five and the activities will go on through 8 o’clock and those will include many things relating to Christmas -- again keeping in mind that our intent is and part of our mission statement is that we are there for the sake of the family and for education,” said Heinemeyer. Heinemeyer says Country Christmas has become a long standing tradition for the center. He says they still make it affordable for families to come out and enjoy all that the center has to offer. One week left to submit letters for KWED Christmas Angel contest Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) — Families have until Friday, Dec. 15 to enter the annual KWED Christmas Angel contest. Anyone is invited to write in and explain why they believe their family or someone they know are deserving or is need of $500 cash this holiday season. The contest, which started several years ago, is designed to illustrate the Christmas season’s true spirit of giving and sharing. As part of the contest, the winning letter will be read live on the air just a few days before Christmas. The winning letter along with photos of the family will also be printed in a holiday edition of the Seguin Daily News. All entries must include the name of the person submitting the letter along with their address and phone number. Letters without a name or phone number will not be considered for the contest. The
winning letter will be chosen by an anonymous panel of judges not employed at Seguin Radio KWED or the Seguin Daily News.

It will be a magician this year which is not normal compared to the Christmas carolers and other people that we’ve had in the past. So, it should be a lot of fun. If you get a chance, come down. You can be part of the organization just by buying a ticket for $75 or you can go online on our website and you can see the different sponsorships, $250, $500 and $700 and by all means take a look and if you want to sponsor, please come down and sponsor,” said Pease. The magic show is expected to be a special part of this year’s Ugly Sweater Party. The professional magician is actually Pease’s sonin-law, Carlos David. Pease says he’s a well known entertainer, and this will be a great show. “He’s a fourth generation magician. He does a wonderful job. I have never personally seen his show because he works out of the Tulsa, Oklahoma area but he’s taken some time off to come down here and help some kids and work with us on the board,” said Pease.
All letters for this year’s contest must be submitted by 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 15 at the radio station located at 609 E. Court St.
Pease says it’s a fun night, and there will be special recognition given to people who have the ugliest Christmas sweaters that night. “There are definitely bragging rights. Last year, there were some great ugly sweaters. I still have one hanging up that my grandchildren made me so it’s very ugly but flashing lights, all sorts of tinsel, you name it, it’s out there and it was very very good. So, if you get a chance, put on your ugly sweater and come down and see us,” said Pease. The child welfare board helps to meet the needs of children who are removed from their homes by the state. They provide help year round, but they will also be working to provide a little extra assistance during the holiday season. In addition to attending the Ugly Sweater Party, Pease says they are also looking for people who are willing to help with their overall mission. “Right now, there is 130 children that have been displaced. Going into the holiday season, we are preparing to get wish lists and buy Christmas gifts for that which requires a lot of help. Our welfare board has many openings so we look forward to anybody

who wants to come and help and volunteer. It’s just a small criminal background check and then you have to live in the county of Guadalupe County in order for you to be part of the board,” said Pease. The board also maintains its Rainbow Room, which is an emergency supply store located in the CPS Office. The Rainbow Room makes sure that these children have what they need while they are in CPS and foster care. “The Rainbow Room is open 24/7 and it’s there specifically to aid the children in the transition when they are being taken out. Some don’t have anything clothes, school supplies etc. depending on when and where they are removed from whatever situation they were in and so the Rainbow Room is stocked from anything from an infant -- pack-n-plays and diapers -- all the way up to 17-18 year old folks that have to make it on their own and need things too,” said Pease.
Country, continued. “One of the first things that was established out at the Red Barn when we got organized was the fact that we were going to put together programs and activities that would involve families. We feel that family is very important and at that time, we were thinking about the country part and of course, Christmas being what it is, we decided that Country Christmas would be a good activity for us to put together out at the setting that we have at the Red Barn. So, we went farther with that and started Country Christmas 20 years ago and here were are today. We are still celebrating it pretty much the way we did then although we might have made a few adjustments,” said Heinemeyer. Board Member Keith Huebinger says they have been busy hanging lights, and decking out the entire grounds at the center. He says the center’s Heritage Village will be open, and docents will be on hand to offer special tours. Plus, there will be live performances at the Village’s Zion Church and other properties. Huebinger says there will also be lots of other fun activities during this year’s Country Christmas. “Inside the main hall of the Red Barn, we are going to have live entertainment. We will have a band

on Friday night. That’s Kirk Herbold and Friends and Saturday we will have Bill & Gil as in Bill Gibbons and Gil Merkle who have been with us several years. We will also be selling concessions. It will be about the only thing that we will be selling. There won’t be any vendors there. This is really, again, focused on family and Christmas. There will be a couple of non-profits working but other than that, it will be just our concessions in the main building. Throughout the main building, you will find some other demonstrations going on. That’s rope making and the Seguin Fiber Guild will be there as well performing some demonstrations on spinning, and weaving and knitting. But also, we are going to be having a kids craft in our Pecan wing museum. We will have ladies set up where the kids can actually do Christmas decorations etc. So, a lot of things involving both family, entertainment for adults and especially the children,” said Huebinger. In addition to all the Country Christmas traditions, there is something new this year. Andrew Cave, of Faith Lutheran Church, says there will be a live Nativity at this year’s event. A nativity that folks can even enjoy while on a hayride. Cave says they’ve offered the Nativity at their church in past years, but he says they thought it would be a good idea this year to
join forces with Country Christmas and other churches in the area. “People can come out between 6 and 7:30 p.m. on Friday and between 5:30 and 7:30 on Saturday. Some churches that are involved are Cross here in Seguin, St. James here in Seguin and we are going to have our Faith Lutheran youth group and the children’s ministry at our church. They are going to be dressing up like angels singing by the 12 ft. cross which is the last scene and also, we’ve got someone from New Braunfels, St. Paul Lutheran. There’s going to be live animals. There’s going to be a Scripture sign at every single station so the Scripture is going to tell the story. The actors don’t talk. They simply are there dressed up. I’m excited personally that we are joining forces because I support the Red Barn and their County Christmas. I take my kids there every single year and love it and I think it’s awesome, that we are combining two family events together,” said Cave. Families will especially want to stop by for a special visit with Santa each evening. Again, Country Christmas at the Big Red Barn will be held Friday and Saturday from 5 to 8 p.m. Admission is $25 a family or $10 for adults and $5 for kids ages 6 to 12. TLU Softball Announces 2024 Schedule Bryce Hayes - TLU Sports Information & Sports Marketing
SEGUIN, Texas -- The Texas Lutheran softball team and head coach Wade Wilson announced the program’s 2024 schedule Wednesday. TLU’s slate will feature 13 games at Ed Kruse Stadium. Opening day is scheduled for Feb. 6 at Ed Kruse Stadium against NCAA Division-II opponent, St. Mary’s. Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) play will begin March 15. The Bulldogs will play five schools that reached the 2023 NCAA Tournament including a 2023 Marshall Regional rematch with Belhaven. Four of Texas Lutheran’s contests are against opponents that were ranked in the final 2023 NFCA poll. The Bulldogs have reached the NCAA Tournament in the last nine seasons under Wade Wilson with trips to NCAA Super Regionals in three of the last four seasons and three Division-III WCWS appearances, winning the national championship in 2019. Texas Lutheran begins the 2024 season at Ed Kruse Stadium with a doubleheader against 2023 Division-II NCAA Tournament qualifier, St. Mary’s University on Feb. 6. The rest of February will see the Bulldogs on the road against American Southwest Conference competition - facing Mary Hardin-Baylor (Feb. 10), LeTourneau (Feb. 23), and UT-Dallas (Feb. 24) in non-conference doubleheaders. TLU will play in the NFCA Leadoff Classic, Mar. 1-3 and will face Belhaven, Babson, Illinois Wesleyan, Chapman, Case Western Reserve, and DePauw. Texas Lutheran has faced all six teams at least once in the last three seasons. Texas Lutheran will conclude non-conference play with a doubleheader against future SCAC foe, Concordia (TX), on Mar. 12.
Texas Lutheran will begin SCAC play with a three game series against Southwestern in Georgetown March 15-16. TLU will continue their SCACopening road trip against University of Dallas March 22-23. TLU returns home for a five game homestand starting with a doubleheader against Texas A&M - San Antonio (Mar. 26) followed by a three-game series against Austin College (Mar. 28-29). The Bulldogs travel to Kerrville to face Schreiner (Apr. 6-7) before returning to Ed Kruse Stadium for a six-game homestand against Centenary (Apr. 12-13) and Trinity (Apr. 19-20). Texas Lutheran closes the regular season in Houston in a three-game series against St. Thomas in a rematch of the 2023 SCAC Championship the weekend of April 26-27. Postseason play begins with the 2024 SCAC Tournament hosted by Texas Lutheran in Seguin May 3-5 as TLU looks to secure its ninth conference title in the last ten competed tournaments. NCAA Regionals will be played May 17-19 at host institutions with Super Regionals scheduled for May 24-25. The 2024 Division-III Women’s College World Series will be held in Marshall, Texas, for the second consecutive season May 30-June 5 as TLU pursues its second national championship. Rebecca “Becky” Jones Turberville, age 78 of Seguin, Texas passed away on December 5, 2023. Becky was born on February 6, 1945, in Laredo, Texas, to Jessie Mae (Askew) and Samuel Upton Jones. Becky graduated from Calallen High School in 1963 then attended college at Del Mar and Texas Women University in Denton. After college, her career focused on banking. She started as a teller at Seguin Bank and Trust, then moved on to Citizen State Bank & then the International Bank of Commerce in Corpus Christi. She worked her way up from teller to head bookkeeper. After that, she worked at Freer Bank, Austin Bank of Commerce, and finally First Federal Savings and Loan for twelve years. Her career path took her in a different direction, leading her to work with preschool children as a teacher’s aide at Oak Hill Methodist Church in Austin and then First United Methodist Church in Corpus Christi. Becky had a green thumb and enjoyed gardening. Becky loved socializing. She had a knack for connecting with others and always made everyone feel special. Her family, dogs, and attending sporting events brought her so much joy. Becky is preceded in death by her parents, sister, Carol Gottlich, and her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Velma Prudence (Ricketson) and Sibley Holmes Turberville. Survivors include her loving husband of 55 years, Gary Neil Turberville; daughter, Kelly Ann Schmitz and husband Jeffrey; granddaughters, Lauren Rebecca Donahue, Braeden Diane Donahue, Carsen Ann Donahue, and Brooke Avery Schmitz; brothers-in-law, Bink Gottlich, and Ashley Turberville and wife Mary; sister-in-law, Jo Hastings and husband Bobby; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving family members, and friends. Visitation will begin on Friday, December 8, 2023, at 9:30 a.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel followed by a funeral service at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Jeremy Roy officiating. Randy Wayne Jones, age 74, of Seguin, Texas passed away on November 30, 2023. Randy was born in Ft. Worth, Texas on July 30, 1949. Randy was a successful businessman, a loyal friend, and an avid outdoorsman with a larger-than-life personality. He always had a new joke to share. He recently discovered Facebook and enjoyed finding and experimenting with new recipes, usually desserts, and sharing them with family. He always arrived early to any party and jokingly chided the rest of us for showing up late. Randy’s heart was huge. He always thought of others and how he could bless them or alleviate their burden. He often could be found with his buddies at Whataburger, laughing and trading jokes. He is preceded in death by the love of his life Deborah Jones, son Chris Jones, parents Gil and Dorothy Lovell, brother Larry Jones, and sister Teresa Spencer. He is survived by his nephew, Bradly Lovell and family; niece, Kasey Jones Cody and family; sisters-in-law, Julie Hunter and Kathy Caraway, brothers-in-law, Gerald Spear and Kenneth Spear; nephews, James Hunter, Robert Hunter, Richard Gavigan, Matthew Gavigan, Chris Gavigan; nieces, Victoria Kleen and Deborah Hunter and their families; numerous great nephews, nieces, friends and other loving family members. Abortion Opponent In Texas Wins Preliminary Battle (Austin, TX) -- A Texas woman who is challenging the state’s near total abortion ban has won a temporary restraining order that could allow her to end the pregnancy. Lawyers for Kate Cox argued the medical exemption in the state law is vague and the doctor worries about a lifetime prison sentence. Cox’s pregnancy has a severe anomaly and could prevent her from having children in the future. Judge Maya Guerra Gamble said the idea that Cox wants to be a parent and the law might actually cause her to lose that ability is shocking and would be a genuine miscarriage of justice. The lawsuit is believed to be the first of its kind in the nation since the Supreme Court last year overturned Roe v. Wade. Panera Bread Sued Over Man’s Death (Fleming Island, FL) -- A family in Florida is suing Panera Bread over a man’s death. Their lawsuit alleges Dennis Brown died from drinking Panera’s Charged Lemonade drink. They filed suit earlier this week, almost two months after he died of cardiac arrest. The lawyer for Brown’s family says he had three Charged Lemonades the day that he died. Each drink has almost 400 milligrams of caffeine. That’s the FDA’s suggested daily maximum intake. Panera Bread denies the drink led to Brown’s death. Frontier Airlines Settles Pregnancy, Breastfeeding Discrimination Lawsuit With CO Pilots (Denver, CO) -- Frontier Airlines is settling a lawsuit filed by five pilots that accused the airline of discrimination while they were pregnant or breastfeeding. Frontier will now let pilots pump breast milk in the cockpit during noncritical phases of flights and will also update existing policies that impact lactating or pregnant employees. Frontier is one of the first airlines to allow its pilots to pump breast milk during flights. Vice president for labor relations at Frontier Airlines Jacalyn Peter said they are proud to be at the forefront of accommodating the needs of pregnant and breastfeeding mothers in the airline industry. Study: ChatGPT Might Incorrectly Answer Drug Questions (Undated) -- ChatGPT might not be a reliable source for medication-related questions. A study by pharmacists at Long Island University found that the free version of ChatGPT provided inaccurate or incomplete answers to some questions about drugs. Other responses didn’t directly address the questions that were asked. A lead author of the study says patients should be wary when using the viral chatbot for drug information and responses should be verified by a doctor or other trusted sources.
