Holiday Stroll Parade
set for TONIGHT Seguin to host annual lighting of Central Park Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) – The 2023 Holiday Season officially gets underway tonight during the city of Seguin’s annual Holiday Stroll Parade and Lighting of Central Park. The parade, which kicks off three nights of downtown holiday fun, begins at 6:30 pm at the intersection of College and Austin Streets. The Holiday Stroll Parade features entries from local and area businesses and organizations that are illuminated with lights to celebrate the upcoming holidays. Leading the caravan of floats will be the Guadalupe County Fair which has been chosen as this year’s parade marshal. The parade will travel south on Austin Street ending at the Seguin Coliseum parking lot.
Following the parade, the community is invited to gather in Central Park for the annual tree lighting by Seguin Mayor Donna Dodgen. The mayor will also announce the winners of the parade and the Christmas Tree Decorating Contest. Parade entries will be judged on lighting, creativity, and holiday spirit. Santa will also be available for photos in the downtown gazebo. The city’s Holiday Stroll events continue on Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. with the annual Holiday Sip n’ Stroll. Over 40 downtown businesses and organizations will be serving up their best cocoa recipe with the hopes of winning this year’s bragging rights. Stroll, pg. 3
The Seguin Parrot Head Club has added to the festive colors of the season with their entry in this year’s Downtown Christmas Tree Contest. (Seguin) – Seguin Radio KWED is getting a head start in thanking its sponsors for this year’s Holiday Food and Toy Drive. The collection effort for the Seguin Police Department’s Blue Santa Program and Christian Cupboard gets underway this Friday from 7 to 9 a.m. outside our studios at 609 E. Court St. Year after year, a crowd of community members and leaders gather outside in the middle of the street collecting cash, checks, food, and toys. Although hosted by the media team, it’s our sponsor partners who help ensure transportation for the donations along with refreshments for volunteers and the 100 plus students who also come out that day to perform holiday music or who stop by to lend a hand.

(Seguin) – The sounds of Christmas officially arrive in Seguin Saturday night thanks to the dynamic music duo of Take 2 featuring Lupe Gonzales and Howard Hudiburg.
The two professional musicians will be treating the Seguin community to their free “Our Christmas Gift” Album Release Concert at the historic Palace Theater. The Take 2 holiday concert will include 19 tracks of traditional and contemporary Christmas music both sacred and secular. Despite having performed together before, Gonzales says he’s truly looking forward to Saturday’s
concert and is glad to have jumped on this latest opportunity. “It took a long time to get us together because Howard had his career, and I had my career as you know. We want people to experience what we experienced recording this. There is What Child is This. That’s instrumental. On that one, we were talking about the first takes in the recording studio. (Seguin) – Snuggling up next to the big screen at Stars and Stripes Drive-In in New Braunfels will do more than just create new holiday memories for your family. This Saturday, Light Work 316, Inc, a non-profit in Guadalupe County, will be working to also raise funds for families with sick children with its Name Your Ticket Price Fundraiser. Inviting families to a special holiday showing of Elf is Abbie Maberry, founder of the organization. Maberry says this is the fourth year that the group has hosted the holiday event in hopes of bringing joy to all families. “This Saturday, the second of December beginning at 5 p.m., our Christmas party begins, and we ticket by the car. So, it’s one ticket per vehicle. It is a donation of your choice. The donations start at $5 dollars. So, for $5 on up, you can bring your entire family into Stars and Stripes. We will provide cookies, hot chocolate and coffee from Dutch Brothers. We will have a stuffed animal adoption sent down from the North Pole and we will have crafts for
the kiddos. We also have a vendor fair and of course, Stars and Stripes has their concession stand open with all of their great snacks and food and then at 7:15 p.m., we show the movie Elf and in the middle of the movie, we have a special Christmas magic surprise for all of our kiddos that are in attendance,” said Maberry. Maberry says this is the fourth year that the organization has hosted the Christmas fundraiser. She says the event is relaxing and just a fun way to give back. “You pull in. It’s just like an old time drive in. You get to choose your parking space. Bring your blanket. If you want to have chairs outside your vehicle, you are able to do that

Heather and Noel Guerin, 802 Elm Welcome to the home of Noel and Heather Guerin, and Max, their Golden Retriever. This California-style ranch house was designed and built in 1965 by San Antonio architects Barrera and DeMunbrun for Winston and Helen Traeger. Winston Trager owned a wholesale grocery distributorship in Seguin, on the site of what now is the ZDT Amusement Park. This home is well-known in Seguin as a place of gathering for events large and small. The pool, installed in 1985, was a popular spot for the grandchildren and their friends. Christmas was Helen’s favorite time of the year. She filled the home with multiple beautiful Christmas trees, magical snow villages and plenty of festive decorations. This home was sold in 2014 to Craig and Lorna Wagner, who transformed the home into a classic example of mid-century modern design.

Hudiburg says although both are native to Seguin, the two men never performed together. At

Even on the secular music we play like White Christmas or Blue Christmas – it is still His music,” said Hudiburg. The two, who now celebrate the similarities in their talents, say they are ready to help locals ring in the holiday season this Saturday night. Hudiburg says they have specifically designed the sequence of the music so that the concert captures the collective
sounds of the season. “The first part is some light and happy Christmas music and then the last part, again, is kind of secular and songs about snow and white Christmas – things we don’t see in Seguin. We get just ice. But Jingle Bells, Jingle Bell Rock, Blue Christmas by Elvis and that kind of thing. Then the middle part is really our testimony and that’s where Mariann (Hudiburg, his wife) will come up and sing Mary Did you Know with Lupe. We are going to ask Dottsy (Dwyer) to come up and sing just on Blue Christmas. They are going to be the ooh, ah girls on Blue Christmas,” said Hudiburg. The concert which is part of the city of Seguin’s Holiday Stroll activities gets underway at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Again, the concert is free. Movie concessions will be available. The Palace Theatre is located at 314 S. Austin St.

Simien and Martinez Named to United Soccer Coaches All-West Region Team Bryce Hayes - TLU Sports Information & Sports Marketing
SEGUIN, Texas -- United Soccer Coaches announced the 2023 All-Region Teams Tuesday and both Alyssa Simien (San Antonio/Warren) and Klarissa Martinez (Houston/Incarnate Word Academy) were named to the All-West Region Team. Simien, the two-time reigning SCAC Offensive Player of the Year, was named to the Second Team while Martinez was named to the Third Team. This is the second All-West Region honor for Simien after earning Second Team honors in 2022 while this is the first career honor for Martinez. This is the first time since joining the SCAC that the Bulldogs have had multiple players earn All-Region honors. Simien continued her stellar career with the Bulldogs in 2023. Simien became the first player in TLU women’s soccer history to win multiple SCAC Offensive Player of the Year honors and first to repeat as SCAC Offensive Player of the Year. Simien is the fifth player in league history to earn back-toback Offensive Player-of-the-Year awards since the league started recognizing both an Offensive and a Defensive POTY in 2003. Simien put together yet another terrific season for the Bulldogs as she led the conference with 11 goals, four of which came in conference play. Simien is the first Bulldog since Sioned
Kirkpatrick in 2012-13 to have back-to-back double digit goal scoring seasons. Simien also added four assists which ranked fifth in the SCAC. Simien was one of two players (Klarissa Martinez) to earn multiple SCAC Offensive Player of the Week honors this season. Simien was also named to the All-SCAC First Team for the second time in her career. Martinez had a breakout sophomore season for the Bulldogs finishing second only to Simien in goals scored with 10 goals scored, scoring a SCACleading six goals in conference play to earn First Team All-SCAC honors. Martinez was also second in points (22) and tied for first in game winners (4). Martinez earned SCAC Player of the Week honors twice and was a constant presence for the Bulldogs, earning points in seven of the Bulldogs final nine regular season matches. China Needs More Fever Clinics (Hong Kong) -- China’s health ministry says the country needs more fever clinics to cope with a surge in respiratory diseases. This comes during the first full winter since COVID restrictions were eased in China. The World Health Organization is asking for details of the outbreaks after reports of clusters of children being hospitalized with pneumonia. The rise in cases is primarily centered in Beijing and in northern China. Health experts at the W-H-O say there’s no immediate cause for international concern because the new respiratory cases are nowhere near the scale of the initial COVID-19 outbreak four years ago and appear to be due to common viruses. Milwaukee County Reports Jump In Thanksgiving COVID Cases (Milwaukee, WI) -- Public health managers in Milwaukee are reporting a jump in COVID cases. The county’s Dr. Ben Weston took to X yesterday to say both positive cases and hospitalizations jumped after Thanksgiving. Weston said coronavirus cases have jumped 20 percent this month, and he said there are now 99 people hospitalized with the virus. The numbers are nowhere near Milwaukee County or Wisconsin’s peaks from the original virus or the omicron variant. Still, Weston said it is a reminder that COVID has never really disappeared. Colbert Out For Week Due To Ruptured Appendix (New York, NY) -- Stephen Colbert has announced he’s off this week, not because of a ‘Turkey overdose,’ but a ruptured appendix. Colbert made the announcement on social media. Colbert said he’s grateful to his doctors for their care and to his wife Evie and his kids for putting up with him. The Late Show was scheduled to return Tuesday night. This is the second time health issues sidelined Colbert this season. He missed a week of shows in October after getting COVID-19. Food Pantry For Pets (San Diego, CA) -- A food pantry for pets has opened up in downtown Los Angeles, run by a veterinarian from San Diego. Dr. Kwane Stewart has been providing free medical services to animals on Skid Row for more than 12-years. His goal is to provide adequate, consistent nutrition for pet’s total health. He says the Dog Food Pantry will also provide food and services to cats. Stewart plans to expand his work to New York next year.
