(Seguin) -- For many families, the holidays bring both joy and hardship and Seguin Radio KWED Radio hopes to again ease that burden with this year’s Christmas Angel Contest. The contest is now accepting nominations for a deserving family to receive $500 cash.
Families have until 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12, to submit a letter explaining why they or someone they know could use $500 cash this Christmas. The contest is designed to highlight the true spirit of the season by encouraging residents to lift up neighbors who may be struggling or who simply deserve a helping hand.
Anyone in Guadalupe County is invited to participate by writing a letter describing a family’s need or why their nominee would benefit from the cash gift. The contest began several years ago and has since become a holiday reminder of
the importance of kindness.
As part of the tradition, the winning letter will be read live on the air just days before Christmas. The letter along with photos of the selected family or individual will also be featured in a special holiday edition of the Seguin Daily News.
To be considered, entries must include the name, address, and phone number of the person submitting the nomination. Letters missing contact information will not be eligible. An anonymous panel of judges, independent from KWED Radio and the Seguin Daily News, will review the entries and select this year’s Christmas Angel winner.
Again, all letters must be submitted by 5 p.m., Dec. 12, here at the KWED studios, located at 609 E. Court St. Up until the deadline, entries can also be dropped off anytime using the drop slot located on the front door.

(Seguin) -- Guadalupe County will remain under a burn ban for at least another 90 days. The decision was made Tuesday after Guadalupe County Commissioners unanimously approved extending the current order for the unincorporated areas of the county.
The request was brought forward by Patrick Pinder, Guadalupe County Emergency Management Coordinator, who says the area remains too dry to safely lift the ban.
“The burn ban currently placed in effect will expire on Dec. 2. I wanted to put this before the court to consider an extension to begin on Dec. 3 for another 90 days. Currently, the KBDI is in the 640s. It’s been in the high 500s and low 600s for the last 90 days so it’s my recommendation we
just continue the burn ban,” said Pinder.
Guadalupe County Judge Kyle Kutscher couldn’t help but note and chuckle at the unusual timing of the request. He says in the end, “the county will need significant rainfall before any changes are made.”
“I’m just smiling because look at the forecast. We haven’t had rain for weeks and weeks and months and then. it’s projected to rain – every time I put it on – it’s like 10 days – so, I fully support putting the burn ban on, so we get four inches of rain or three inches of rain next week,” said Kutscher.
Officials say residents should be even more careful as conditions are expected to become much more dangerous in the winter.

(Geronimo) -- Surprise visits recently turned ordinary mornings into moments of celebration in the Navarro ISD.
The Navarro Education Foundation (NEF) sparked excitement throughout its campuses with the awarding of $69,303 in classroom grants.
The NEF Grant Patrol made stops at every Navarro campus -- elementary, junior high, and high school -delivering checks, and plenty of cheers.
Elizabeth Mundine, a member of the NEF board of directors, says this latest round of grants is just another contribution in the group’s ongoing effort to make sure students are successful in the classroom.
With the newest round of grants, NEF has now awarded an impressive $867,568 in total funding to Navarro teachers since its inception.
“It fluctuates depending upon the amount of corporate sponsorships and community support. We are able to fundraise each year and our major fundraisers in the fall – we have Clay Fest which we just had at the beginning of October and then, in the spring, we have Duck Fest so we have major fundraisers and depending on how those do, is how much funding we have available,” said Mundine.
From innovative literacy initiatives to hands-on STEM learning, Mundine says this year’s competitive grants reflect the creativity and dedication of teachers who work hard to ensure learning for all Navarro ISD students.
“We are excited with the different projects that the teachers and staff and faculty brought to us this year. We have programs ranging from down from the element level all the way to the high school level. We have anything from classroom transformations in our ELA which is the English Language Arts and math classrooms where they take the classroom, and they form into a theme of that project or that phase of their studies of that time. We have field trips to the Natural Bridge Caverns.

(Seguin) -- For several Seguin ISD educators, a recent morning turned into “a banner day” after the Seguin Education Foundation Prize Patrol arrived at their classroom doors with more than $119,000 in grant awards.
The Seguin Education Foundation (SEF) Prize Patrol this fall made its annual surprise grant deliveries, awarding 30 innovative classroom grants.
Executive Director Jill Nash says this year’s total reflects the “continued generosity and commitment of donors who believe in giving teachers the tools they need to enhance learning.”
“These grants bring amazing programs to life from STEM to technology to arts and literacy. Our teachers have incredible ideas, and these grants make them happen for our students,” said Nash.
Nash says the Prize Patrol traveled campus to campus on a district bus, accompanied by the Seguin High School band, cheer squad, and journalism students who documented the morning’s excitement. At each stop, Nash says students lined the hallways for a parade-style walkthrough – cheering on those teachers whose ideas will be funded.
Among this year’s recipients was Destri (des-tree) Shaw, a sixth grade reading teacher at A.J. Briesemeister Middle School. Shaw says she is excited about her $1,625 grant that will bring a Titanic museum experience to life for her students this January.
“We are coming up on a reading unit all about Titanic and I want the kids to make artifacts and set up their own little museum for parents and the community to look at and the grant will pay for the materials for them to make that as I can’t expect all 200 of them to go to Hobby Lobby and buy all their materials so it will help them create their artifacts and set up the museum for parents to come see,” said Shaw.
Shaw says she is thankful for the education foundation and appreciates the commitment to making Seguin, pg. 4

Navarro, continued.
People who are challenged as far as their learning abilities physically or augmentatively, we have different devices or programs that we are going to fund to

help make learning easier for them. So, we are really excited about the depth and variety of the projects that the teachers have brought to us and many of our extracurricular programs are going to see projects and funding into them as well,” said Mundine.

sure teachers have what they need to ensure the success of all students.
“I appreciate that I work at a district where they are willing to give us opportunities to think outside the box -- to give the kids more opportunities that they might not see in a different school. Thank you to everyone who donates to the SEF Foundation in Seguin,” said Shaw.
Support for the NEF is solicited yearround. Again, community fundraisers include the annual Duck Fest and Clay Fest. To learn more or to donate to the non-profit email navarroeducationfoundation@gmail.com.

Nash noted that days like these highlight the hard work of the foundation, which continues to grow its support for Seguin ISD teachers and campuses.
“I want to give a huge thank you to our donors and to our community. WE are investing directly in our kids’ success. That is what it is all about.
The Seguin Education Foundation has just over 35 board members made up of community members all over Seguin and we could not thank
them enough for their hard work and everything that they pour into the foundation,” said Nash.
As SEF closes out another successful grant cycle, Nash says the foundation is already preparing for its largest fundraiser of the year — the annual Mardi Gras Gala, scheduled for February 2026. Tickets and sponsorship information are now available on both the Seguin Education Foundation’s website and Facebook page.

(New York, NY) -- A New York judge is approving Purdue Pharma’s bankruptcy, which will release billions of dollars for opioid plaintiffs across the nation. New York’s Attorney General announced the news Tuesday after Bankruptcy Judge Sean Lane confirmed the plan in a bench ruling. Letitia James secured approval on behalf of 55 states and U.S. territories. She said it’s a significant step in finalizing the seven-point-four-billion-dollar settlement with Purdue and its owners, the Sackler family. James said Purdue was at the center of the nation’s opioid crisis, feuling addiction and deadly overdoses with deceptive marketing. The Sacklers are being booted and Purdue will be run by a non-profit.
(Columbus, OH) -- An urgent national recall is being issued for popular ice cream bars containing hidden allergens. Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream issued the advisory for its Passion FruitDreamsicle after the company discovered that a crunch topping used in another product was accidentally blended into some of its dreamsicles. The topping contains wheat and soy, ingredients not listed on the label. The FDA published a notice on Tuesday about the Ohio-based manufacturer’s ice cream recall. It involves a single lot with the code 25-210. Jeni’s is urging customers to check their freezers. No illnesses or injuries have been reported.
Countries (Geneva, Switzerland) -- A cervical cancer vaccine is helping to protect 86-million girls in high-risk countries. Gavi [[GAH-vee]], the Vaccine Alliance in Geneva, is making that announcement and estimates that expanded use of the HPV vaccine will prevent one-point-four million cervical cancer deaths in the future. Of the 350-thousand deaths in 2022, the Vaccine Alliance says 90-percent were in low income countries, particularly in Africa. A global campaign to increase access to the HPV vax was launched in 2023. It’s boosting vaccine coverage to 25-percent of all Gavi-supported countries. That’s triple the 2022 coverage rate of just eight-percent.
(Rochester, NY) -- A new study shows there could be a connection between a mother’s stress level during pregnancy and when a baby’s teeth come through. Researchers at Rochester University in New York found that infants who have mothers with higher levels of a stress hormone develop their first teeth earlier. The study published in the Frontiers in Oral Health suggests that stress can speed up aging in babies. Researchers say the premature showing of teeth could be an early warning sign of an infant’s compromised oral development and overall health.
