Texas Theatre closes the curtain on loan note By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- The burning of a note recently took center stage at the historic Stephen and Mary Birch Texas Theatre. Seguin Conservation Society members recently gathered around a large fire to celebrate its official ownership of the downtown theater. Steve Tschoepe, the president of the Seguin Conservation Society and who serves as the chair for the theatre's management team, says the group couldn't be more thrilled. "We are excited that the note is paid off but the projects don't end there because we still have things that we want to add and things that we already need to fix so it kind of moves to the next phase of just maintenance of taking care of the building and then also diversifying our programming somewhat. We want to have an exciting 2020 and looking to do some new things," said Tschoepe.

March of 2011 and that bill was $263,000 I believe and we only had about $35,000 in the bank. So, needless to say, we had to get a bank note to pay off the rest and our statement to the conservation society board and this was from the management team of The Texas is that we would not leave them in debt and therefore, we began programming and planning and doing shows and events and rentals and stuff with great community support and we are here today where the note is paid off," said Tschoepe. Tschoepe says the Texas is always looking for ways to bring even more people through its doors. "We want to kind of diversify what we do, have some special events and then maybe change up some things we currently do. We still are very successful with plays and our concerts but we are looking at some other different events that we could have at The Texas to bring in some new audiences and create enthusiasm for our community," said Tschoepe. The theatre just this past weekend hosted a sold out crowd for the Malpass Brothers packing the house both downstairs and across its balcony. The Texas Theatre is located at 425 N. Austin St.

(Seguin) -- Seguin is getting prepared to kick off the holiday season with the Holiday Stroll. One of the community’s favorite Holiday Stroll event is Sip ‘n Stroll, a chance to shop and socialize all while sipping on homemade hot chocolate. For the ninth year, the Sip ‘n Stroll mug will feature a Seguin landmark, and this year, the mug will feature the former Seguin Fire Station, currently housing the Schertz Seguin Local Government Corporation. The firehouse, built circa 1910, was the City of Seguin’s first brick firehouse, replacing a wooden firehouse located on Austin Street. It remained the firehouse until the 1950’s when the Central Fire Station was built. The 2019 Sip ‘n Stroll committee selected artwork submitted by Nancy Hartfiel, a retired art teacher with Navarro ISD and Seguin resident, to be featured on the 2019 mug. The artwork is a pen and ink drawing with colored penciling of the southern façade of the firehouse. Hartfiel has been making art her entire life across a variety of mediums, but drawing is her favorite. Art is a passion of hers that she took with her into the classroom teaching art in Alvin before moving to Seguin in 1980, where she taught art and history at Navarro High School. “For the last couple of years I thought about entering the contest but always thought someone else would do a better job,” said Hartfiel, “I have always loved the old fire station. It is one of my favorite downtown buildings so I thought I would give it a try. We’ve (Hartfiel and husband Arlynn) watched the fire station through all of its changes.” The 2019 Sip ‘n Stroll mugs featuring Hartfiel’s beautiful art piece can be purchased for $15.00 at various local businesses in and around downtown Seguin. By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Seguin ISD's youngest elementary school is celebrating a decade of learning. Students and staff on Monday not only sang Happy Birthday to the 10-year-old campus but they celebrated with 600 gold, white and black Matador cupcakes. Choosing to celebrate on Nov. 11, was also in honor of the school's namesake Oralia R. Rodriguez who celebrates a birthday on that day. School Principal Robert Arriola, says it was important for the school to celebrate not only the history behind the campus but the learning that happens each and everyday in its classrooms.

"We are taking this opportunity to go ahead and celebrate what's been sort of a legacy of Rodriguez for the last 10 years obviously in honoring Ms. Oralia Rodriguez who today she would have been 103-years-old. Today is actually her birthday, Nov. 11 and so we wanted to take the opportunity to actually celebrate her birthday at the same time we celebrate our 10 year anniversary. So you know, two in one and really remembering what Rodriguez has done in an impact for the Seguin ISD for the last 10 years. We are still a young campus compared to other campuses across the district but sometimes, we need to take that moment to take a pause, look back and look at those 10 years and celebrate that with the kids," said Arriola. As part of the celebration, Arriola

invited the former principals of the school. They include Mrs. Yomeida Guerra who served the role for the first two years followed by Allison Seidenberger who currently works at Jim Barnes Middle School. Guerra says she was honored to have been a part of helping to open the school and remembers all the preparations that went into making sure it was ready for its first batch of students. "Ten years ago when we opened Rodriguez, this was a cutting edge school. It was so exciting. It was so new. It's the most beautiful school in the district -- well maybe not anymore because Seguin High School is up but it's gorgeous. It was amazing. Dr. (Irene) Garza let me bring gosh, I think it was five people from Koennecke, five! And, I'm like, 'I need more.' She goes

The campus first opened its doors to students on Aug. 24, 2010. Oralia Rodriguez "taught in Seguin from 1944 until 1955 and then from 1956 until her retirement in 1969." Oralia, the daughter of a migrant "farm worker" is described as always having high expectations for her students and a strong belief in education. The 10 year birthday celebration will continue throughout the year and will conclude with the school's annual Cinco De Mayo celebration in May.

TLU men's basketball splits season opening road games in Abilene (Abilene) - Texas Lutheran opened the season with an 86-81 overtime loss to Hardin Simmons in Abilene Friday evening, but bounced back to defeat McMurry 60-59 Saturday on Sebastian Andrade's game-winning jumper in the closing seconds. TLU women's soccer ends year with 2-0 quarterfinal loss in SCAC Championship (Georgetown) - Texas Lutheran Women's Soccer finished its 2019 season with a 2-0 loss Friday in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship quarterfinal against the University of Dallas.

TLU finished the year at 7-9-2 overall. Dallas out-shot TLU 13-10 overall and had an 8-6 edge in shots on goal.

After a scoreless first half, Elisa Duran scored for the Crusaders in the 68th minute. Dallas knocked out TLU in the quarterfinal round for a second consecutive year. Alyssa Mencacci added the insurance goal in the 85th minute. The match was played at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas.

Samantha Martinez took three shots for TLU, and Jessica Acosta collected two shots. Both of Acosta's shots were on target.

Q: I am seeing yellow flowered plants along the roadways and along wooded areas. Are they goldenrod and don’t they cause allergies?

A: That yellow flower, Solidago altissima, is indeed goldenrod, but the allergy part is not so. Our goldenrod is a perennial herb that grows three to six feet tall. The yellow pyramid of flowers appears from September to November and grows in most of the United States and southern Canada. According to Wildflower.org, the plant grows in dry to moist roadsides, thickets, prairies and open woods. In Seguin, you can see the plant in Park West and along 123 Bypass. I do not water my plants. The only moisture they receive is from rain. Goldenrod requires sun to part shade and grows in most soils. Wildflower says the height of the plant is determined by the fertility and moisture of the soil. The plant attracts birds, butterflies, native bees and honey bees. This is because it is a good nectar source and one of the few flowers blooming this time of year. Goldenrod can be propagated by seed or division of the rhizomes. I dug up a rhizome from a clump alongside my road, and all of mine and that of several friends have spread from that first initial plant. People have associated the plant with allergies because the ragweed, which blooms at the same time, does cause allergies. Goldenrod does not. I have collected the blooms and used them for dye. According to the Fall 2013 Wildflower Magazine, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford and Henry Firestone cross bred goldenrod to get a hybrid that was almost 12 percent rubber. However, this was evidently abandoned as I don’t have goldenrod tires (I don’t think). In the sixteenth century the plant was used to stop bleeding in ulcers and bloody wounds.

Q: Last month Neil Sperry in his garden column said to refrain from pruning fig trees. Why?

A: The new growth on fig trees tends to be vegetative which means it wants to grow leaves, not flowers and fruit. If you are planning to purchase a fig tree, plant it out from the house so that it can grow without pruning. Sperry says figs grow from fifteen to eighteen feet wide. (Mine is huge and I only trim off the bottom branches so that I can get under to weed and mulch.) Sperry also says that when you trim, don’t leave stubs, and avoid high nitrogen fertilizers to minimize the vegetative growth. I don’t fertilize mine but I keep a layer of leaf mulch around the base.

Q: Why some leaves change color in the fall is a question many people have asked Doug Welsh in his Texas Garden Almanac.

A: Chlorophyll, which causes the color of green leaves, disintegrates as fall comes with its shorter days and longer nights. This leaves the other pigments in the leaves to show through which includes red to purple anthocyanins, yellow to orange carotenoids and brown tannins. Look around you when you pass a wooded area at the flame sumac which already has red leaves and the changing colors on other trees and shrubs. FYI: It is time for falling leaves again. Rather than throwing them away, mow them with your mulching mower. If you just have a few on your lawn, leave them in place. If you have a lot, gather the mowed leaves and use for mulch in your flower or vegetable beds or put in your mulch pile. Bags of leaves can also be taken to the nearest community garden.

MSgt. James “Jim” Ronald Christy Jr., USAF Ret. of Seguin, Texas entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, October 22, 2019 at the age of 84. He was born to James R. Christy Sr. and Thelma M. Campbell Christy on December 30, 1934. James is preceded in death by both of his parents and his loving wife Enilda Christy. James was known for his kindness and for how much he cared for those he called friends. His wicked sense of humor and stubbornness were just two of his fine qualities. Librado "Lee" M. Ramirez passed away with his wife by his side on Tuesday, November 5, 2019 at the age of 70. He was born on August 21, 1949 to Librado and Yladia Ramirez Sr. He was a Vietnam Veteran who served our country from 1969-1971. Lee was follower of Christ and a business man who owned "The Royal Touch" which left the door open and gave him the opportunity to give his testimony, a true follower of Christ. Lee never met a stranger and was known for helping anyone he came in contact with. His humble and loving personality will be deeply missed by all of those who were lucky enough to know him. He is preceded in death by both of his parents and three infant siblings. Left to treasure his memories is his loving wife of 50 years, Otilia M. Detroit Hospital Performs Double Lung Transplant On Vaping Patient (Detroit, MI) -- A Detroit hospital thinks it has carried out a first-of-its-kind procedure in the U.S. for a vaping-related injury. Henry Ford Health System says they performed a double lung transplant on a male patient, and will have a press conference Tuesday to discuss it. Doctors note the patient's use of e-cigarettes left him with irreparable lung damage. The CDC says there are more than two-thousand cases of vaping-related injuries in the U.S. and one American territory, and 39 deaths have been reported.

Study: Hate Eating Veggies Could Be Genetic (Dallas, TX) -- Those who hate eating vegetables may be able to blame their parents. Scientists say there could be a genetic reason instead of just being a picky eater. They revealed a new study at an annual meeting of the American Heart Association. Seems some people are sensitive to the bitter taste found in such veggies as broccoli, cauliflower and brussel sprouts. A new study finds this makes them almost three times as likely to eat fewer veggies than those without the bitter gene.

More Cities Consider Banning Gas Stoves (Berkeley, CA) -- The days of using a gas stove are dwindling. More cities in California are implementing a ban in the name of climate change. It applies to new construction beginning next year. The idea of going all-electric is also being considered in Massachusetts, Oregon, and Washington state. Natural gas releases carbon dioxide when it's burned and that's the main greenhouse gas causing climate change. Experts say the ban will not only create a cleaner environment, but lead to fewer health problems as well.

Report: Climate Change Could Affect Military Training (Cambridge, MA) -- Climate change could make training U.S. troops more difficult. That's the warning from the Union of Concerned Scientists, a nonprofit research and advocacy group. The analysis suggests that rising temperatures could lead to more health problems in new trainees, already often pushed to their limits and saddled with heat-related illnesses in sweltering conditions. The report predicts that with nothing done to reduce carbon emissions, by 2050, U.S. military bases will experience five times as many days on average with a heat index above 100 degrees.
