Voters show their support for Meadow Lake’s future Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- There is a clearer pathway forward for those who want to restore Meadow Lake here in the Seguin area. Voters living along the hydroelectric lake on the Guadalupe River showed overwhelming support for three proposals on Tuesday’s ballot. The propositions, placed on the ballot by the Meadow Lake Water Control Improvement District (WCID), are at the heart of efforts to replace the lake’s aging dam and protect it for generations to come. Propositions A, B, and C all easily passed during Tuesday’s election. Proposition A, which would “authorize the WCID to issue bonds for the restoration of Meadow Lake, its dam and hydroelectric capacity with a tax levy for debt service,” passed with 135 votes in support of the measure and only 27 votes cast against it. The results were similar for the other two propositions. Proposition B called for “the WCID to refinance bonds issued under Proposition A if costs can be reduced due to lower interest rates.” It passed with 136 votes for it, while 26 votes were cast against it. Marion elects new city mayor Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Marion) -- There’s a new mayor in the city of Marion. Daniel Loyola won a small but close race against Abbie Maberry. Loyola grew up in Marion, moved away and returned after retiring after 20 plus years with the U.S Marines Corp. During Tuesday’s election, Loyola received 67 votes. Maberry, who currently serves as mayor pro tem on the Marion City Council, received 65. Maberry had a slim lead after the votes were released for the early voting period, but Loyola was able to close the gap and take the lead for good as the election ballots were counted. Loyola replaces former Marion Mayor Victor Contreras, who in September, resigned due to health and personal reasons. Loyola, a 1997 graduate of Marion High School, says he still can’t believe this victory. “I still can’t believe it happened especially growing up here and

graduating here and then leaving and coming back. Again, I never thought growing up that I’d be the mayor of Marion,” said Loyola. Having lived all over the world serving the country, Loyola says his focus is now on serving the Marion community. “A lot of times I get asked, why

did you run for mayor and you try to come up with this elaborate answer and at the end of the day, the answer was always because I just love this city. I really love this small town. It made me the person who I am growing up, playing football, playing baseball, running track and all of that stuff. I love this city of Marion,” said Loyola. Loyola says he applauds Maberry for running a clean campaign and looks forward to working with her in the future. He is expected to be administered the oath of office during the Marion City Council meeting scheduled for Nov. 20. There were also several other area elections in the city of Schertz, the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD, and the Green Valley Special Utility District during Tuesday’s Constitutional Amendment Election. Majority of propositions get voter approval in state of Texas (Austin) -- Texas voters have given a thumbs up to 13 of the 14 proposed amendments to the state’s constitution. The approvals include propositions 1 and 9, which were closely watched by a number of groups in the Seguin area. Proposition 1 aimed to prevent municipalities from creating regulations that would limit the operations of farmers and ranchers. Proposition 9 will allow the state to provide pay raises to retired teachers across the state. A massive property tax cut is on its way to Texas homeowners and businesses. On Tuesday, voters also overwhelmingly approved a state constitutional amendment that changes the way Texas public schools are funded. Proposition 4 was authored by Houston Republican Sen. Paul Bettencourt. The $18 billion property tax-cut amendment won the support of 84-percent of voters. Prop 4 was intended to lower school district property taxes, which make up most of the property tax bill for a Texas landowner. The only proposition to fail was Proposition 13. The proposed amendment would have allowed Texas judges to retire at a later age.

Meadow Lake, continued. Proposition C passed by a 133 to 30 margin, again showing voters desire to support the plan to ultimately restore the lake. Proposition C will set “an upper limit on any taxes related to the operations and maintenance of the WCID and to authorize the WCID to levy taxes up to that maximum tax rate.” Celebrating the news is Jacy Robbins, the president of the Meadow Lake WCID. Robbins says the pathway for preserving the local lake is more defined thanks to the support of voters. “It’s a lot of excitement that we’ve gotten to this point and of the vote and I think it was passed by an over 80 percent majority so I think the voters spoke loudly that they want to keep moving forward and so that’s what we are going to do and I think because we spent so much time planning, that the next steps are pretty well defined for us,” said Robbins. This week’s victory started several years back when the aging dams along the Guadalupe River were deemed unsafe. Following the failure of the dam at Lake Dunlap, upstream in the New Braunfels area, lake residents and the GBRA eventually agreed to work together on solutions. This would lead to the formation of the water control improvement districts on lakes Dunlap, McQueeney, Placid and Meadow Lake. Lake Dunlap has since been replaced and was just recently fully restored. Although restoration efforts are also underway on Lake McQueeney and Lake Placid. Robbins, says the situation at Meadow Lake is a bit different. “Lake Dunlap has done an excellent job and we have consulted with a number of their people who have worked on that but I will say that our solution is different in that it is fully planned for us to own it and GBRA has been working close with our group on that and that’s one of the next big steps is the transfer

agreement for ownership of the dam with GBRA. The WCID would own and we are bringing in a very experienced third party operator for the operation and maintenance of the dam and then I would say the technical solution is also different on our part as well. It’s a different gate type but it does have a difference in cost that gate type,” said Robbins. Tuesday was also marked as a major victory for the Meadow Lake WCID because there are far fewer homes on the body of water compared to some of the other areas upstream. That means the approved tax levy will be spread out over a smaller number of taxpayers when compared to the other lakes. Since the city of Seguin and GBRA owns a significant portion of the land that borders the lake, city officials had already taken a public interest in restoring the lake by pledging $5 million to help with the effort should taxpayers vote yes on the three propositions. Having a smaller pool of residents to generate those dollars is what Robbins says has kept the WCID in full planning mode since the very beginning. “The combination of the lower cost plus the city’s contribution and we are looking at a DOE (Department of Energy) grant. It is by no means guaranteed but we do highly qualify for the program and so that could provide up to an additional $5 million. So, the combination of finding those additional funding sources and lowering the costs made it possible for us to move forward with a successful vote,” said Robbins. Tuesday’s outcome is also a big win for the members of the Meadow Lake Nolte Dam Association (MLNDA), who, since the failure of Lake Dunlap four years ago, have remained focused by organizing and hosting regular fundraisers. Business and community members who don’t live or operate on the lake have also spoken in favor of the city’s support for restoring the dam. They say it’s unique because it flows through such a large part of the city of Seguin.

Seguin’s John Jackson invited to play in all-star football game in Florida Chris Austin

(Seguin) -- Seguin High School senior running back John Jackson has been invited to play in the Podyum Preps All-American Bowl in Miami Beach, Florida in January. Jackson made the announcement on social media on Monday. The all-star game is part of a four-day event January 4th through the 7th. Participants will be evaluated by scouts from all levels of NCAA football. Jackson finished his senior season at Seguin with a single season program record 1784 yards rushing. He averaged 8.7 yards per carry and lead the Matadors with 17 touchdowns during the 2023 season. Jackson was a Second Team All-District 12-5A selection in 2022 as a junior, leading the Matadors in rushing with 798 yards and nine touchdowns. In 2021, Jackson topped 1000 yards on the ground as a sophomore with 1118 yards to go along with another nine scores.

Jackson is also a star athlete for the Seguin basketball team. He was named the District 26-5A Offensive MVP during his junior season. Jackson averaged over 21 points per game and passed the 1000 point plateau in his career during a 90-89 Seguin victory over Converse Judson on December 8th, 2022. Jackson and the Matador boys basketball team will start the 2023-24 season next Tuesday night at Goldie Harris Gym when they host Young Men’s Leadership Academy. Jackson has a long list of schools seeking out his football talents. He has received college football offers from Minot State, Southwestern Oklahoma State, Fairmont State, East Central University, Virginia University of Lynchburg, Southeastern Oklahoma State and McMurry University. Players at the Podyum Preps All-American Bowl will be coached by active college coaches as well as former NFL players and coaches. The allstar game will be held at Ted Hendricks Stadium in Miami Beach.

Pastor John David Doerfler, a man who truly never seemed to tire, claimed the promise of his baptism on Saturday, November 4th, in his home surrounded by his loving family at the age of 74. A memorial service honoring God and celebrating David’s life will be held on Thursday, November 9, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at the Chapel of the Abiding Presence on the campus of Texas Lutheran University in Seguin. David always wanted to be with his children: Ashley, Meredith, Andi, and Lizzy, and grandchildren: Simon, Pierce, Chloe, Grayson, Georgia, Yuri, and Crosby. He loved projects like building ziplines and forts and giving them all sorts of things they could hurt themselves with.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Mr. James Louis Oates, who unexpectedly left us on October 24, 2023. Known to many as “Goat”, he was born on July 3, 1957. James was an individual of authenticity, generosity, trustworthiness, and an affinity for fun. He was a simple soul but was a rich man because everybody he touched with love, loved him in return. His radiant personality shone through in his devotion to his family and friends, a legacy that will live on. James most recently had a respectable career at the Guadalupe County Road and Bridge Department, proudly retiring in 2022. In his younger years, he worked as a mechanic and semi-truck driver. He spent countless hours rebuilding motors, fixing cars, and building things. He enjoyed the time spent in Wilburn Brown’s garage during the 1980’s building the awardwinning tractor pull truck “Fantasy”. His many years as a truck driver were recognized as accident free, quite an accomplishment for all the miles he traveled across the country. His tireless work ethic was an example to all who knew him. Emphasizing the importance of a job done right, he passed this valuable lesson on to his children, teaching them about the gratification and rewards of hard work. It was during his career at Structural Metals Inc. that he was introduced to his lifelong friends and brothers including Henry “Tequila” Mertz, Ernest “Cowboy” Neumann, Reyes “Chainsaw”

Ultimately these men and their families meshed together creating an unbelievably strong, lifelong example of brotherly love and what it truly means to be a family. James met the love of his life, Patty McFarland in 2007. The couple shared a vivacious love for one another that was like no other. They were most happy just being together and shared a love for animals, dancing, country music, good food, their family, and friends. Anyone that knew of James and Patty knew that they were each other’s soul mates. June 15, 2013, Patty unexpectedly suffered a major stroke and passed away leaving a void in James’ heart that many could agree would never be filled. James is survived by his mother, Nellie Oates, his devoted sister, Linda and husband Allan Trial and nephew Scott Trial. His two cherished children; his daughter, Jennifer Horne and husband Glen Horne and his son, Christopher Oates and fiancé April Ferrell. His beloved granddaughter, Presley Hirsch was undoubtedly the apple of his eye. James leaves behind a brother, JJ Edwards. James also loved another brother, David McFarland and his wife Linda. Their children Cheyenne and Hunter were very dear to him and he looked after them as any good uncle should. James was predeceased by his father, Samuel Louis Oates. The loss of James leaves a void that can never be filled. His authenticity and generosity made every interaction with him feel genuine and warm. He will be dearly missed, but his lessons, his love and his legacy will persist in the hearts of those he left behind. A Celebration of Life is being planned for a later date.

Lillian Marie Ehrlich Lippe, age 94 of Seguin, passed away on November 7, 2023. Lillian was born on November 24, 1928, in Creedmoor, Texas to Elsie (Wagner) and Gustav Ludwig Ehrlich. Lillian grew up on the Ehrlich farm with her grandparents, aunts, and uncles after her father passed away at a young age. She was a standout athlete at Lockhart High School where she lettered 3 years on the volleyball team and was Captain for 2 years. When she married, she stayed home to raise 3 sons. She was an excellent cook

and seamstress. She was an avid San Antonio Spurs and Dallas Cowboys fan. Once the boys left home, she spent 12 years working in the school library at Joe F. Saegert in Seguin. When she retired, Lillian enjoyed participating in a bowling league, bible study, gardening, playing card games with friends, and of course watching sports on TV. Lillian is preceded in death by her husband, Walter Lippe, her son, Paul Lippe, her parents, and her brother, Max Ehrlich. Survivors include her sons, Lloyd Lippe and Phil Lippe; granddaughters, Jordan Walker and husband James, Karoline Flores and husband Daniel, and Meredith Bean and husband Lawton; great-grandchildren, Paige, Brooke, Kate, Cassidy, Matthew, William, and Madison; sister-in-law, Doris Ehrlich; numerous other loving family members and friends. Lawsuits In California May Make Companies Liable For Social Media Companies Addicting Kids (Sacramento, CA) -- Concerned parents, mental health professionals, and in some instances, even kids are concerned about the mental health effects of social media addiction. There are hundreds of lawsuits across the U.S., all asking social media companies to change how their products work. One California case may be pivotal. It accuses platforms like TikTok, Instagram and Facebook of using algorithms that hook kids and cause mental health problems including suicidal thoughts. Attorneys for the companies say that businesses are not legally required to prevent users from becoming addicted to their products. ME Senators Press Army For Answers On Maine Mass Shooter (Washington, DC) -- Senators from Maine want answers from the Army on the Army reservist who killed 18 people in Maine last month. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King sent a letter to the U.S. Army inspector general asking about concerns Army personnel raised about Robert Card’s mental health and actions taken in response. They want to know if the Army followed proper procedures, and if there was anything that should or could have done to prevent the shooting. Card was a Sergeant First Class in the Army Reserves and had a history of mental illness before carrying out the shooting in Lewiston. NY Expands Access To Birthing Doulas With Directory And Coverage (New York, NY) -- New York is expanding access to birthing doulas in an attempt to combat maternal and infant deaths. Governor Hochul signed a law that will create a directory so New Yorkers can connect with licensed doulas. New Yorkers enrolled in Medicaid will also be eligible for doula coverage on January 1st, 2024. Hochul says New York is currently ranked fourth in the nation for lowest infant mortality rate, but there’s still a racial gap since Black infants are nearly three times as likely to die as white infants. Austin Health Creates Emergency Text System For People Experiencing Homelessness (Austin, TX) -- The City of Austin has launched a new emergency communication system for people experiencing homelessness. It’ll provide real-time text alerts for well over three-thousand unhoused residents. According to Austin Health, text messages will include alerts for storms, extreme heat, cold and other life-threatening conditions. City officials say they’re committed to protecting the most vulnerable residents during crisis situations.
