(Seguin) – It doesn’t look like the colder temperatures will be keeping the ghosts and goblins at home tonight. Halloween events and old-fashioned trick or treating will be the name of the game tonight as families set out for that holiday candy. Thanks to the Seguin Police Department, College Street will remain one of the city’s hot spots for trick or treaters. That’s because officers themselves will be handing out candy all along the local street. To help keep families safe, the PD will again place barricades along the various intersections – closing off College Street from North San Marcos to North King Streets. The SPD Bike Patrol will also be monitoring the street throughout the evening. Also joining the festivities this Halloween night will be the Seguin Central Fire Station located just around the corner from College Street at 110 Elm St. The fire station, for the first time, has chosen to combine its annual Open House with a Trick or Treat Night from 5 to 7 p.m. Trick or treaters pg. 2

(Seguin) -- Although they did not have a direct hand in selecting the winners, Niagara Bottling officials say they were more than ecstatic to learn last week’s announcement that Seguin’s Max Starcke Park had been selected as one of the three parks in the country to receive $75,000 in the Niagara Perk Your Park Contest. Working in partnership with Niagara to head the contest was the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). After a nationwide call for entries, Seguin was one of nine finalists and ultimately a top winner in the online voting competition. Sharing some of the company’s excitement is Ann Canela, the director of corporate giving for Niagara Cares, the company’s charitable organization. Canela tells the Seguin Daily News that what makes Starcke Park’s win special is the fact that it is in the same exact community as one of its bottling plants. “We were rooting for it. I mean I, certainly personally, was. We don’t control the outcome of the campaign. It really is a community process, but we are really glad that we are able to promote a healthier lifestyle in a plant community and we are just really looking forward to people getting outdoors. I’m just o pleased that I’m able to talk to you again and we are here celebrating a win,” said Canela. Canela says the “Perk” component of the contest is, of course, the hands-on contributions that will be assigned to the future park project by Niagara employees. “What happens first is the grant will come directly from the National Recreation and Park Association so they will be distributing the funds as soon as possible.
Then, they work with our local plant in that community and our plant members will volunteer and they will choose the opening day and a ceremony and there will probably be a check presentation if there is an opportunity and we’ll both basically work hand in hand with the city team and the park’s district there to determine what kind of renovations are going to be happening and then we will do everything from support the groundbreaking to the actual dig out and then anything else that is needed to make the park’s perking happen,” said Canela. What might, however, be most impressive for Canela and the rest of the Niagara and NRPA teams is the number of online submissions or nominations that were received for the selection of Max Starcke Park. “I want to say this community, and we asked NRPA, they received over 32,000 submissions for this park. So, I just have to say that direct involvement from the residents in your area is really inspiring and this just speaks volumes to the engagement of the residents and also the need and motivation to get the park perked so it makes me very happy, and it really shows the care of the community for the people around us. So, I think you all should be very proud of this grant,” said Canela. City officials say they are hoping to use the grant money as a catalyst to build a brand new playground at Max Starcke Park East. The playground would replace the Kid’s Kingdom Playscape which was demolished earlier this year due to age and unsafe conditions. If and when additional funding is approved by the city, the park’s office hopes to have the new play area in place by the end of six months.

Antwoin Mebane ties state rushing score record as Navarro clinches playoff berth on Panther Senior Night Chris Austin
(Geronimo) — The Navarro Panthers clinched a playoff berth with an easy 63-0 win over Austin Achieve on Navarro High School Senior Night at ErwinLee Field in Geronimo on Friday night. Panther running back Antwoin Mebane set a program record and tied a state record with a 99-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. The run would be the first of two 90-yard plus runs for the senior. Mebane would go 94 yards on another rushing score for the Panthers. Senior quarterback Colton Shuelke would throw for a pair of scores. One a 57-yard pass to Montgomery Elder and another on a 45-yard connection with Mack Berry. Austin Davidson and Gabriel Rangel hooked up on a 68-yard touchdown pass. And senior running back Nicholas Schwarzlose got loose a 67yard TD run as Navarro raced out to a 49-0 lead after the first half.
Jesse James Waz and Davidson would add rushing touchdowns out of the Panther slot-t attack in the second half to complete Navarro’s offensive output on the night. Defensively, Rangel and Davidson had interceptions while Ethan Borchardt had two picks on the evening. The win was the first shutout of the year for the Panther defense. Navarro moved to 3-1 in District 13-4A. The Panthers are second place in the district, one game behind unbeaten Wimberley heading into the final game of the regular season. The Panthers will play at Manor New Tech this coming Friday. Wimberley will play at Austin Achieve. Navarro and New Tech will kickoff at 7:30 p.m. this Friday in Manor.

Dorothy Lee “Dottie” Vogel Kallies, age 88 of Belmont, passed away on October 28, 2023. Dorothy was born on November 9, 1934, in New Braunfels, Texas to Virginia Margarite (Wagner) and Herbert Vogel. Upon her mother’s death at age 6, she was raised by her great-aunt Fannie Ellis and great-uncle Howell Ellis in eastern Guadalupe County. She attended Dowdy School until it closed, and then graduated from Seguin High School in 1953. In June 1953, she married Leslie “Pete” Kallies. They had three children: Mona, Basil, and Jeffery Kallies. Dottie was a homemaker, teacher’s aide, sales clerk at Williams Drug Store, and insurance agent for Hermann Sons Life, and enjoyed gardening, sewing, quilting, canning, baking, and making jellies as well as raising chickens, turkeys, and guinea hens. She was a 40-year breast cancer survivor. Dottie is preceded in death by her loving husband of 59 years, Leslie “Pete” Kallies, parents, step-mother-in-law, Clara Kallies, great-aunt and great-uncle, grandparents, brother Herbert Vogel Jr. and wife Alma, and nephew Billy Wayne Vogel. Survivors include her daughter, Mona Kallies Ulbricht and husband Walter; sons, Basil Kallies and wife Rebecca, and Jeffery Kallies;

Millions More Americans Struggle With Food Insecurity In Latest Report (Washington, DC) -- Millions of Americans are struggling with hunger. A new report from the Department of Agriculture shows that more than 44-million Americans were living in food-insecure households in 2022, up more than 10 million from the previous year. In a press release on the report, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack called the findings “unacceptable.” The millions of food-insecure American households include more than 13-million children. More Than Half Of Americans Struggle To Afford Health Care (Washington, DC) -- More than half of Americans are struggling to pay for health care. A new Commonwealth Fund survey shows that healthcare is unaffordable for many working-age adults, even those with employee-sponsored insurance. Of those who purchased insurance on their own, including on the Affordable Care Act marketplaces, 57-percent said they had difficulty paying for health care this year. The survey found that costs are forcing many to skip medical care altogether, with almost 40-percent saying they opted out of needed medical care or prescription drugs over the past year because they couldn’t afford it. Pfizer Begins Phase 3 Trial For New COVID-Flu Vaccine (New York) -- Pfizer and BioNTech are beginning a Phase 3 trial for the combined flu and COVID-19 mRNA vaccine. The pharmaceutical company reported positive results from its Phase 1 and 2 studies. The previous trials looked at whether the new shots are safe and effective. Pfizer said the Phase 3 trial will look for any potential side effects and will begin in the “coming months.” A Pfizer official said the results were encouraging. Medicare Limits Patients’ Access to FDA Approved Alzheimer’s Drugs with ‘Unprecedented’ Requirement’ (Atlanta, GA) -- Some Alzheimer’s patients who’d hoped to try new medicine recently approved by the FDA may find themselves with limited or no access thanks to Medicare. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, also known as CMS, are requiring patients to sign up for a clinical trial before they’ll pay for access to the new medications. That’s a first for Medicare, requiring patients to first get enrolled in clinical studies. Dr. Kenneth Thorpe, a health policy expert at Emory University, says that could throw up major roadblocks for patients, depending on where they live.
