The trash talking ends in Guadalupe County; trash collections sites to OFFICIALLY close Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- If you’ve got trash or big bulky items to throw out, then you’ve got two more weeks in which to take advantage of Guadalupe County’s two trash collections sites. Carmen Davila, the public information officer for Guadalupe County, says both of the county’s trash collections sites, located in Marion and Kingsbury, will officially close on Oct. 31. “There has been lots of talk during Commissioners Court for several months regarding the contract
not being renewed by Republic Services. Republic Services informed the county in June that they would no longer renew their contract. Therefore, leaving the option open for us to put out another request for proposal to find a new agreement that allows for similar trash services to be made available for residents in rural areas. We’ve only received one bid at that time of the closing and that was Waste Connections,” said Davila. Davila says the submission of

that one bid has led to ongoing negotiations between Guadalupe County and Waste Connections. “Right now, what is happening is the commissioners court has entered negotiations with Waste Connections regarding the contract terms to meet the required service needed to operate for our road and bridge department for the way they dispose of recycling and trash for the county --work that the road and bridge department does. Discussions are continuing
with commissioners’ court and our purchasing department in order to offer some cleanup amnesty days – working through that with Waste Connections. What that looks like right now is not definite. We don’t have definite details on how that is going to work,” said Davila. (Seguin) -- The excitement of the 140th Guadalupe County Fair and Rodeo will linger into the holidays. That’s all thanks to Seguin Mayor Donna Dodgen who has announced the Guadalupe County Fair Association as this year’s grand marshal for the 2023 Holiday Stroll Parade. Dodgen says the decision was made on the fair association’s impact year after year. “The Guadalupe County Fair has been a staple in our community for the past 140 years and is the third oldest county fair in Texas. In a tribute to recognize the fair’s heritage and numerous contributions to the youth in our community, it is fitting that the Guadalupe County Fair be honored in this way, “said Dodgen.
The parade, which kicks off two nights of downtown holiday fun, is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 30 at the intersection of College and Austin Streets. The Holiday Stroll Parade features entries from local and area businesses and organizations illuminated with lights to celebrate the upcoming holidays. The parade travels south on Austin Street to Central Park. After the parade, the community is invited to gather in Central Park for the annual tree lighting. Float entries are currently being accepted. There is no cost to enter. The deadline to enter is Nov. 16. Entry forms and parade rules can be found on the city’s website. Parade entries will be judged on lighting, creativity, and holiday spirit.
Trash, continued. “There are several services that now offer garbage pickup in the rural area and that hasn’t been seen before. This is a contract that goes back to 2019 when there were not as many services picking up garbage collections at curbsides in rural areas and now there is. So, we are hoping that residents will look out for a service that they want to connect with and engage in their own personal contract,” said Davila. Despite the outcome of the negotiations, Davila
says the county realizes that the service that has been provided over these last few years will no longer look the same. “Those two locations were servicing either daily trash – they would weigh them and then they would dispose of the trash and then pay it by the bag. That type
of service will no longer exist. People are able to dispose of their trash at two location sites that are operated by other companies. There is the Post Oak Dump. There is the Beck Disposal System as well as the Mesquite Landfill and I’m sure there are several others in this county that will work with
residents on their bulk items. How they want to take their regular trash, that will be up to each resident,” said Davila. Not only will services not be the same but the Marion and Kingsbury locations are not likely to be part of the trash services from here on out. County officials say they do expect the two sites to be quite busy until their closing on Oct. 31. The Kingsbury collection station is located at FM 2438. The Marion station is also available at 140 Vernell Ln.

TLU Bulldogs welcome East Texas Baptist for homecoming this Saturday Chris Austin
(Seguin) -- The TLU Bulldogs will look to get their first conference win when they host the East Texas Baptist Tigers this Saturday at Bulldog Stadium. Texas Lutheran fell on the road this past Saturday to No. 20 Hardin-Simmons, 27-22. The Bulldogs drove down to the Cowboys 12-yard line late in the game, but the Cowboy defense forced an incompletion on the final play of the game. East Texas Baptist squeaked by McMurry last week, 14-13 at home. Last year, the Tigers beat the Bulldogs 38-35 in a back-and-forth game in Seguin. The Bulldogs are 0-2 in American Southwest Conference play with both of their losses coming
to ranked teams. TLU fell to No. 23 Mary HardinBaylor two weeks ago. The Tigers are 2-1 in conference play. This Saturday’s game is homecoming at Texas Lutheran University and TLU head coach Neal LaHue says his team is excited to play in front of the Bulldog faithful. “Our fans are phenomenal. They do a great job of cheering on our kids,” LaHue said. “There are a lot of people on this campus and in this community and alumni that come back and watch our games. Our kids really appreciate that. And homecoming means a special time to a lot of people and we’re looking forward to that.”
San Antonio East Central graduate Caden Bosenko is expected to make his third career start at quarterback for the Bulldogs. Bosanko threw for 148 yards and rushed for 97 yards tallying two total touchdowns in his second career start against Hardin-Simmons. Marion High School grad Jacob Wallace leads TLU in receiving with 24 catches on the season for 319 yards and three touchdowns including one last week against the Cowboys. www.SEGUINTODAY.com Forrest Wayne Gunckel, 68, of Seguin, Texas, lost his battle with cancer on September 17, 2023. He passed away peacefully surrounded by family. Forrest expressed his love for his family and said, “Ive had a good run and I’m going to see my
buddies.” Forrest was born on February 2, 1955 at the former Gary AFB in San Marcos, Texas, to Shirley Rose Schultz Gunckel (daughter of August (Pat) and Rosa Schultz), and Larry Wayne Gunckel. He spent most of his childhood years at his father’s military assignments, settling in Seguin, Texas upon his father’s retirement from the Air Force. Forrest attended Seguin High School, working part-time for the Koehler Company. After high school, as a full-time employee, he quickly acquired cabinet making skills and demonstrated that he was a talented craftsman. In his early 20’s, Forrest decided to start his own business and went on to have a successful career as the owner of Gunckel Architectural Millworks. As the business grew, he acquired a warehouse at the company’s current location on West Kingsbury Street. He set it up with state-of-the-art equipment and began to take on large commercial projects. With a passion for woodwork, he dedicated countless hours to perfecting his craft and becoming a successful entrepreneur. His dedication and expertise in his field were highly regarded by his colleagues and clients. Even though business was his primary interest throughout his life, Forrest still found time for other pursuits and had a passion for golf, fishing, gardening and cooking, with a special talent for barbecuing. Forrest’s dream was to retire in Rockport, where he could fish to his heart’s content. It is there that his final resting place will be, with his ashes to be scattered at sea. Forrest had a vibrant personality and was especially known for his wit and sense of humor. He had a special bond with his dog, Jax, who brought him immense joy and companionship. Forrest will be deeply missed by his loving daughter, Linsey Amstead; son-in-law, Brent Amstead; and grandkids Kylee and Asher. He leaves behind his father, Larry Gunckel; and stepmother, Jodi Gunckel; sisters, Cindy and husband Avery Curnel, Terry Atkinson and partner Jim Roe; and stepsister, Cathi Barnes. He is preceded by his mother, Shirley Gunckel; and brother, Gary Gunckel. A Celebration of Life service will be held to honor and remember Forrest’s life on October 28th at 12 p.m. a Faith Lutheran Church, 1326 E. Cedar St. in Seguin, Texas. In lieu of floweres, the family request that memorial tributes be made in the form of charitable donations to the American Cancer Society.

Johanna “Jody” Green Schievelbein, age 87 of Kingsbury, passed away peacefully with her loving family by her side on Monday, October 16, 2023. Jody was born on September 25, 1936, in Kingsbury to Martha Mae (Cockrill) and Tillman Jesse (T. J.) Green. Jody was a graduate of Prairie Lea High School where she played basketball. She served as a cub scout leader for Troop 107. Jody and Lee Roy enjoyed membership in the Happy Soles Square Dance Club, participating in the Roadrunner Camping Group and team bowling. She also volunteered as a Pink Lady at Guadalupe Regional Medical Center and as a hospice volunteer. Her favorite times were with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jody is preceded in death by her parents, brothers Jesse Green, Tillman Green, and Lewis Green, and sisters, Maxine Nickell Raske, Annabelle Miller, and Lizzie Mae Lorenz. Beverlye Bukowski Rea (1921 - 2023) Beverlye was a vibrant, fullhearted mother and friend. She passed away peacefully in her home with family by her side on October 13. Beverlye came into this world on June 7, 1921, by parents Edward B. Cox and Rena M. McBride in Lafayette, Louisiana. They moved as a family to Houston where she
lived most of her life. She attended the Incarnate Word School of Nursing, earning her RN degree and practicing at St. Joseph Hospital. She met her husband, Dr. Lucian Bukowski, at the hospital, marrying in 1940. They were married for 57 years and had four children, Beverlye Ann, Lucian “Buck”, Janet, and Lynn. She later married Frank Rea, whom she adored dancing and golfing with. Known affectionately to many as “Momie”, even outside the family, Beverlye lived a full life of 102 years. She was a devoted Catholic, avid golfer, and keen bridge player. She loved to entertain and enjoyed traveling, particularly with her three daughters. She cherished time in McQueeney, Texas among friends and family where she spent her final years. Beverlye is survived and loved by her three daughters, Beverlye Mueller, Janet McDonald and husband Tim, and Lynn Carothers; eight grandchildren, Charles “Chaz” Mueller and wife Susan, Todd Mueller and wife Amy, Kipp Mueller and wife Kim, Lucian Bukowski, Dana Bukowski, Col. Shane McDonald and wife KaCee, Blair Hanosh and husband Aaron, Chelsey Hussey and husband Matthew; sixteen great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband’s Lucian M. Bukowski MD and Frank Rea; son Lucian M. Bukowski, Jr. “Buck”, sons-in-law Charles “Buzz” Mueller and John Carothers. Felipe Aguirre Sr., a beloved member of the community known for his hard work, generosity, and dedication to his family, passed away on October 12, 2023. He was born on August 23, 1930, in San Marcos, TX, to Aurelio and Petra Gallegos Aguirre. Felipe’s career spanned many years, beginning as a butcher at Dyess Meat Market. He later worked at Baenzingers and True Value Hardware before finding employment with the City of Seguin, where he eventually retired. Even after retirement, Felipe continued to support his family by working at Walmart and delivering food for Meals on Wheels. His entrepreneurial spirit shone through as well, as he owned, Aguirre’s Seguin Grocery Drive In store, Aguirre’s Ballroom and Eloisa’s Tamales restaurant – establishments that left an indelible mark on the Hispanic business community. Family was always paramount for Felipe. He cherished spending time with his loved ones and played an active role in raising many of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Gathering everyone together for a barbecue was one of his favorite ways to create lasting memories. Felipe’s warm heart and supportive nature earned him the title of “Legend” among those who knew him best. He touched the lives of countless families in the surrounding neighborhoods through his kindness and generosity. Whether it was lending a helping hand or offering words of encouragement, Felipe was always there for others. Felipe’s memory will live on through his loving wife of 68 years, Eloisa Gutierrez Aguirre, and his children Anna Castillo, Ricky “Cuz” Aguirre (Diane), Felipe Aguirre Jr. (Doris), Isabel Aguirre Rodriguez, Gloria Estrada, Reynaldo Aguirre, and Roland Aguirre Sr. He is also survived by 32 grandchildren, 47 greatgrandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Felipe Aguirre Sr.’s passion for life was evident in everything he did. When he wasn’t spending quality time with his family, you would often find him enjoying his favorite hobbies, which included maintaining his cattle at the ranch, baseball, barbecuing, and constructing various objects. He was a Jack of all trades. He also had a deep love for fishing and playing the accordion – talents that brought joy to those around him. In addition to leaving behind a grieving family, Felipe is preceded in death by his parents Aurelio and Petra Gallegos Aguirre, as well as his brothers Raymond Aguirre and Agapito Aguirre. His 1st son who was a twin was also called home before him. Felipe Aguirre Sr.’s Funeral Services will be held at Palmer Mortuary & Cremations in Seguin, TX. The visitation will take place on October 19th from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, followed by the recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7:00 PM. A Mass will be held on October 20th at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church at 10:00 AM. The interment will follow at Santo Tomas Cemetery. The Reverend Don Douglas Vlasak, age 94, passed away on October 15, 2023. Visitation will begin on Saturday, October 21, 2023, at 10 a.m. at Emanuel’s Lutheran Church in Seguin followed by a funeral at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Marcus Bigott officiating. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall. Graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. at the Moulton City Cemetery in Moulton, Texas. As the Great Depression started, his family moved several times and ended up in Corpus Christi, TX. An avid student of science, young Don eventually came to know the Lord. He was baptized and confirmed by the Rev. Clarence Bohls. At Texas Lutheran College, he met his beloved wife, Elinor Wehe. They were married at Grace Lutheran Church, San Antonio, TX in 1954 just as he started his 4th year at Wartburg Theological Seminary. He was ordained at his home church, First Lutheran in Corpus Christi, TX on June 19, 1955, and soon after accepted his first pastoral call to La Iglesia Luterana Cristo Rey in Alice, TX. Through the years he, with immeasurable support from his wife, served Lutheran churches in Alice, Freer, Mathis, Tynan, Shelby, Fayetteville, Priddy, Comanche, and Rosebud, TX. A true servant of the Lord, he was also an on-call hospital chaplain at Scott and White in Temple, TX. He maintained a license as an emergency medical technician after serving

on the volunteer ambulance service in the rural community of Industry, TX. Don had many hobbies including gardening, tree grafting, restoring antique cars, cultivating native grasses, and refurbishing pipe and reed organs. He had a lifelong love of languages. He spoke fluent Spanish, passable German, and some Greek. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Elinor Louise (Wehe) Vlasak and his sister, Joyce Margaret (Vlasak) Haase. He will be sorely missed by his survivors which include his children, Dr. Gloria Joyce Haug and husband Darrell, Dr. Mark Charles Vlasak and wife Camille, RN, Donna Louise Vlasak, RN, FNP and spouse Cynthia Hinojosa, RN, Dr. Janice Emelia Weinman Seider and husband Kevin, Dr. Marie Elaine Vlasak and husband Dr. Thang Pham, and James Louis Vlasak and wife Jodi; grandchildren, David Aaron Haug and wife Kelli, Erin Lindsey Vlasak, Lauren Michelle Haug Lys and husband Rev. Ola Mae Baker, age 92, of Kingsbury, passed away on October 12, 2023. She was born February 20th, 1931 in Seguin, Texas to Roy and Viola (Adcock) Reneau. She married Glenn H. Baker on October 15th, 1949. The two enjoyed their early years with their 4 boys, fishing on the San Marcos River at their camp house. Ola enjoyed cooking and made many good meals on the river and at home for her family and friends. That love for cooking continued throughout her life. She had the best recipes and everyone loved her baked goods and candy. If it didn’t turn out, she didn’t mind throwing it out the door and trying it again! She loved reading and collecting recipes, and had an enormous library of cookbooks she’d picked up on her travels as well as local churches and organizations. She loved working in her yard. Even in her later years, she would drag the water hose around, ensuring everything was watered and healthy, and always had such beautiful flowers adorning the fences and her backyard. She and Glenn loved traveling the States and Canada in their motorhome. Still, Ola cooked their meals while traveling, and every meal on those wheels and at home ended with some kind of wonderful dessert! She bowled in her younger years, never settling for mediocrity, and had many trophies and pictures for her 200+ scores. She enjoyed visiting with her lifelong friend, Erna Bell Imhoff, and they

still visited until her death. Her greatest enjoyment was seeing and visiting with her grandkids and great-grandkids. They were the light of her life. Ola was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn, sons, Dennis and wife Debra, Barry Baker, sister Bettie Jo Snyder, brother-in-law Leslie Baker and wife Joyce, and brother-in-law Bill Perryman. She is survived by their two sons, Ronnie and wife Becky Baker of Kingsbury, and Jay Baker of Georgetown; grandkids Randall and wife Tonya Baker, Ryan Baker, Jayme Baker Kane and daughter Bonnye, Mallory Baker Weitzman and daughters Haddie, Addy B and Saylor Weitzman, Cayden and wife Karlee Baker, Quinten Baker and friend Halle Scheib, Bryan Baker, Brooke, and Lauren Baker; brother, Butch Reneau and wife Susie; sister-inlaw Patricia Baker Perryman; brother-in-law Charles Snyder; along with many nieces and nephews, who she loved deeply. Seven Children Sickened After Northeast Tennessee Field Trip (St. Gray, TN) -- Public Health managers in northeast Tennessee are looking into an E. coli outbreak following a school field trip. Seven kids from schools in Washington and Sullivan counties have all tested positive for E. coli since they visited the animal exhibit at the Appalachian Fairgrounds late last month. Doctors have traced the outbreak to a shiga-toxin strand of E. coli, but they’re not saying just where the kids picked it up. The Sullivan County Health Department says seven children have been hospitalized, and four are seriously ill. Suspected Measles Case Identified In Cook County (Cook Co., IL) -- A suspected case of measles is being reported in Cook County. The case was confirmed by the Illinois Department of Public Health last Wednesday. It involved an unvaccinated individual who was exposed internationally. The IDPH is working with Chicago to identify potential exposure locations in the U.S. Prior to this case, the last measles case in Illinois was identified in 2019. Shapiro Executive Order Creates PA Behavioral Health Council (Harrisburg, PA) -- Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro has created a 33-member panel to improve care for mental health issues. The executive order issued late last week also directed the new Behavioral Health Council to find better ways to address addiction treatment. In background information for the executive order, the governor notes that more than half of the adults in the state who need mental health treatment haven’t been able to get it. The order also cites ongoing shortages of drug treatment services. Mary Lou Retton’s Health Improving (Los Angeles, CA) -- Mary Lou Retton’s daughter says the Olympic legend is making “remarkable” progress. Retton has been hospitalized in intensive care battling pneumonia for nearly a week. On Saturday, Retton’s daughter released a statement saying there’s been “remarkable” improvement and her “path to recovery is steadily progressing.” Retton made history as the first American woman to win all-around gymnastics gold in the 1984 Olympics.
