Texas High School Bands to takeover Matador Stadium Seguin Marching Festival set for this Saturday Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) – The Seguin Marching Festival returns to Matador Stadium this Homecoming weekend. The Seguin Matador Band will host 15 bands from across the state this Saturday. Marc Telles, Seguin ISD director of fine arts, says this marks the 6th year in which bands of all divisions come to compete and hopefully take back some constructive criticism. “It does several things. It allows groups from all over the area mostly Central Texas, San Antonio but we’ve had groups as far as Houston and they come in and these bands get to perform for world class judges that are music educators, high level music educators that can provide feedback to them. So, they get an opportunity to perform for their

community, perform for the students and they also get feedback that they can use to make their programs better as they progress through the season leading into UIL and any advancement that comes with UIL,” said Telles. In fact, it’s been this band festival that over the years has encouraged the changes in format for other contests throughout the area. He says it’s all about preparing bands for their upcoming season. “We are doing a prelims finals format so all

of the different groups get to perform. We are talking Class 3A, 4A, 5A, 6A. They perform prelims. They get awards from prelims in their classification and then we take the top eight groups and they perform in finals against each other. So 5A gets to compete against 6A and 3A and 4A and although you may assume there is a disadvantage, sometimes our smaller schools end up doing really really well and surpassing some of those larger schools so it kind of gives them an opportunity to compete within their class and then get an opportunity to perform again for a second time which is what they see when they compete at area and state marching contests, “ said Telles.
