Building a better community
ONE nail at a time Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- Hundreds of volunteers were put to work on Saturday during the first ever “Build for Better Bash” benefiting Habitat for Humanity of San Antonio and Guadalupe Valley. The volunteers hammered away in shifts -- piecing together 2x4’s for dozens of wall panels to be used for future homes. The event was held outside TLU’s Seguin Hall located just off of West Court Street. A number of businesses sponsored the event -- many of those businesses also came out with fellow employees who also wanted to give back. The fundraiser effort not only prepared the walls for future homes but it also initiated awareness about the local Habitat efforts and the goal for the group to build even more homes throughout Seguin and Guadalupe County. Among those businesses partnering with Habitat this weekend was Seguin Radio KWED.

During its live broadcast of the event, KWED caught up with many of the folks who showed up to roll up their sleeves. Among those hamming in those nails was Seguin’s very own Mayor Donna Dodgen. “I want this to continue so please if you missed this year, come out next year. It is just so very very important. The city of Seguin has committed to continuing to be a partner because we know how important this is,” said Dodgen. Although it’s a charitable effort, Dodgen says Habitat is the kind of non-profit that folks like to see in a community. She says not only are these new homeowners helping themselves but they are adding to this community. “I said in my opening that we can only be as healthy as our community is and this is a piece of that health that our community needs desperately and you know it only improves each of our lives.
