Seguin to wrap up annual celebration at TLU (Seguin) -- The final event of Seguin’s five day MLK Day Celebration wraps up today at
Texas Lutheran University. Due to today’s cold temperatures, The MLK Day Planning Committee was forced to do away with its annual march to downtown Seguin. Its program, however, will move inside the warm comforts of TLU’s Wupperman Little Theatre.

Regina Lee, a member of the MLK Day planning committee, says doors to the theatre will open at 10:30 a.m. She says the program will follow at 11 a.m. “We are going to do the program that we usually do downtown. Now, we are going to do the exact program
at Wupperman inside. We used to start in Central square and then march to TLU but just a couple of years ago, we reversed it. So, now we are just going to stay at Wupperman and have the program there. So, we plan on being out by 12:30 p.m.,” said Lee. MLK, pg. 3

TEMPERATURES Guadalupe County emergency, fire officials provide tips to stay safe Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- Although there is no expected wintery mix in the forecast, the Guadalupe County Fire Marshal and Emergency Management Office is still geared up to keep folks safe if necessary. That's according to Patrick Pinder, the emergency management coordinator and fire marshal. Pinder says a team of departments recently met to discuss preparations for this arctic blast both now and for those anticipated for throughout the rest of the winter season.. He says as temperatures continue to drop significantly in the next two days, the teams remain geared up and ready to monitor road conditions. Plus, he says they are ready to respond promptly to any emerging challenges. With temperatures still expected to reach freezing levels for an extended period, residents are urged
to safeguard their homes. Pinder says the community is encouraged to follow these essential guidelines to protect themselves and their property. Preventive Measures: 1. Insulate pipes to prevent freezing. 2. Provide adequate shelter and warmth for livestock and pets. 3. Stay informed about weather updates through local media outlets. Pinder says although ice and sleet are not expected, the drastic drop in temperatures still warrants concerns especially for those residents who have no way to heat up their homes or shield themselves from the cold weather. Moreover, the Guadalupe County Fire Marshal
emphasizes the importance of fire safety during cold weather. For those using heat lamps and heaters, Pinder says there are some crucial tips to keep in mind: Fire Safety Tips: 1. Keep a safe distance between heat sources and flammable materials. 2. Ensure proper ventilation when using heaters. 3. Never leave heat sources unattended. Residents are strongly advised to stay informed by monitoring local media outlets such as Seguin Radio KWED for the latest updates on the weather. Fire destroys area home, kills family pets (Guadalupe County) -- Investigation continues into a house fire reported south of Seguin on State Highway 123. The fire was reported at approximately 8:15 a.m. Wednesday. Patrick Pinder, Guadalupe County fire marshal and emergency management coordinator, says Deputy Fire Marshal Valdez from the Fire Marshal's office was the first responder on the scene. "Upon arrival, Deputy Fire Marshal Valdez observed a single-family residential structure completely engulfed in flames. The residence was unoccupied at the time of the incident, resulting in the displacement of two residents. Tragically, the life of the family pets was lost, as they
were discovered within the structure after the fire had been extinguished," said Pinder. Pinder says at this time, they do believe the fire originated in the living room. "Unfortunately, the cause of the fire remains undetermined. Immediate response efforts were initiated by the Seguin Fire Department, Guadalupe County Fire Rescue, the Sheriff 's Office, and the Guadalupe County Fire Marshal's Office," said Pinder. Pinder says while his office is working to determine the cause of the fire, it is also working diligently to provide the necessary support and assistance to the displaced residents.

Lee says each have provided important messages in celebration of the slain civil rights activist. “It’s very important. We have people from our community and some people from outside which is nice just to get an overview of it. A lot of times, our guest speaker wouldn’t have even been born when this occurred. So they brought some history in how it affected them in -- how the changes affected them -- realizing that at one time, people did not have voter rights. There were political things that kept our nation stagnant at one point. So, it’s very important to have various speakers, men and women, pastors, city officials and we try to do a wide mix of people,” said Lee. Today’s program and guest speakers follow a full weekend of events. They included Thursday’s church service at New St. James Baptist Church; Friday’s Seguin ISD Choir and Talent Showcase plus evening Black Entrepreneurs Network and Saturday’s MLK Storytime at the Seguin Public Library and annual MLK Banquet and Dinner Show at the Coliseum. Celebrations continued on Sunday with the MLK Gospel Fest at New
Life Fellowship Church. Lee says she invites all of Seguin to put on that jacket and be a part of today’s celebration in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. She says the hope inspired so many years ago remains a hope for generations to come. “Things that happened over 50 years ago are actually still affecting us. A lot of people say no it has not. Things have gotten better. There is no racism and that’s not the truth of it. There is still a need and there is still a reason for us to really commemorate this date where most holidays don’t’ really affect us. There were a lot of us that were around in the 60s and we have seen changes for the better and this is one community personally that I don’t feel any disregard -- you don’t feel the hatred. You don’t feel the division. Kids in our school just eat together. They play together. They socialize. It is just so positive and when I look around the community a lot of times and I’m not going to say there’s not work to be done but for the most part, Dr. King’s dream is really alive here and it does not hurt to remind people that there is a difference outside of this community, outside of this county. That’s why we continue,” said Lee.
With most schools closed and many folks off from work, Lee says today is the perfect day and opportunity to be a part of the change that is still so very much needed. “One of the mottos that has been pushed around for years is that ‘It’s a day on. Not a day off. It’s a day on to do something positive for the community, for humanity, for yourself, look at things through someone else’s eye. I think that’s very important,” said Lee. The success of this year’s events continues to prove that the community is committed to not forgetting the legacy and work of Martin Luther King Jr. In fact, Lee says plans are already in the works to ensure that his legacy continues in our community. “Everything is starting to look a little different because there are younger people on this committee that are with the people who started the committee -- Ms. Jewel Lewis, Linda Redix, Joe Patterson -- these people started with the committee in its infancy and so they can see the change and now it’s time to let people who weren’t even born and maybe whose parents weren’t even born in the 60s -- to let them start taking an interest and taking a hold of it, being involved,” said Lee. AREA HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Seguin freshman Walls shines despite tough loss for Lady Mats on Friday night Chris Austin
(Seguin) --The Seguin Lady Matadors fought hard but fell short at home to Boerne Champion on Friday night, 64-45 at Seguin High School. Lady Matador freshman Britlyn Walls had her coming out game in the District 26-5A match-up. The point guard finished with a career-high 23 points including 10 of Seguin’s 17 points in the fourth quarter. “She’s a freshman point guard, a true point guard learning how to compete at this level and obviously she can score,” Seguin head coach Veronda Kendall said of Walls. “And so, we’re excited about her future.” In that fourth quarter, Walls was able to find holes in the Champion press and make her way to the basket and convert. The freshman was able to keep pace with Lady Charger power forward Hailey Winn, who also had 23 points on the night to match Walls’ game high. The game started out close in the first quarter, with Champion only up 10-8 with about two minutes left in the quarter. The Lady Chargers were able to put some distance between them and the Lady Matadors with a 16-0 run from the end of the first through the first few minutes of the second quarter to take a 26-8 lead. Seguin would respond with a 9-2 run to close out the half and pull to within 28-17 at the break. Champion extended their lead to a game-high 22 points at 4422 in the third quarter, but the Lady Mats would fight back. Seguin
would go on a 6-0 run to finish the period before the fireworks between Walls and Winn in the fourth. Walls’ freshman teammate Rebeka Wilke had five points in the first half and finished with seven after fouling out in the fourth quarter. Desiree Zuniga, who came into the game averaging over three three-point baskets per game, was limited to five points and one three-pointer as the Champion defense kept close tabs on the senior on the perimeter. Following the tough loss, Kendall said the game was a learning experience for her team. “We gotta keep our heads up and keep fighting, keep learning and keep getting better every day,” Kendall said. “It’s the total package and we’ve got bits and pieces here and there. And we’ve got to put together the whole thing.” Seguin falls to 1-6 in District 26-5A play. The Lady Matadors will next host Pieper on Tuesday night. (Boerne) -- Over in Boerne, the Seguin boys fell 68-41 to the Chargers. Seguin senior John Jackson had 20 points to pace the Matadors. (Nixon) -- And in Nixon, the Marion girls and boys swept NixonSmiley in District 26-3A play. The Lady Bulldogs took down the Lady Mustangs 45-43 and the Bulldog boys walloped the Mustang boys, 66-46.

WHO: COVID Hospitalization Rates Spike As Vaccination Rates Drop (Geneva) -- World health officials say low COVID vaccination rates are putting a strain on healthcare systems. The U.S. and several other countries are reporting a rise in hospitalizations due to respiratory illnesses. An official with the World Health Organization cites “incredibly low” vaccination rates as the cause, as many countries try to move past COVID restrictions. The CDC says less than 20 percent of U.S. adults have received this season’s COVID vaccine, and recommends all adults get an updated shot to protect against the virus. 20 Million Sign Up For ACA Coverage (Washington, DC) -- A record number of Americans are signing up for the Affordable Care Act this year. The Biden administration has announced that over 20-million people have signed up for health insurance plans under the ACA, beating last year’s record of 16-million. That number is likely to increase since Americans have until January 17th to enroll in coverage. President Biden said “the Affordable Care Act is more popular than ever” and the White House pointed to the record number of sign ups as evidence of how many people benefit from the program. Abortions In Illinois Surge In 2022 Due To Out Of State Patients (Springfield, IL) -- More and more people are traveling to Illinois to get an abortion. The Illinois Department of Public Health’s annual abortion stats report shows more than 56-thousand were performed in Illinois in 2022, the same year the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. That is the most since the mid 90s. The rise in abortions that year was driven by a 49-percent increase in out-of-state patients. Nearly 17-thousand people came from other states to terminate a pregnancy in 2022. YouTube Offers First Response Videos (San Bruno, CA) -- YouTube is looking to help out in medical emergencies. The streaming giant says it’s teamed up with multiple health organizations, including the American heart Association. The content includes videos regarding CPR, choking and other urgent health matters. The move is part of YouTube’s initiative to crack down on medical misinformation. In addition, viewers are urged to call 9-1-1 before looking up any material.
