Seguin to host large MLK celebration this weekend Darren Dunn
(Seguin) -- The MLK Freedom Week is officially underway. The fiveday celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. kicked off Thursday night with a church service at New St. James Baptist Church. The service was the first in a long list of events being hosted by the Seguin MLK Day Planning Committee over this long holiday weekend. The MLK schedule continues on Friday, with a pair of events. The very popular Seguin ISD Choir and Talent Showcase will be held at 6 p.m. Friday in the Performing Arts Center at Seguin High School. Committee member Joe Patterson says this event will feature students from each Seguin ISD campus. “The kids love it. They love it. And they do all this within an hour. So, you’re not going to come and sit and be there a long time. Those teachers and those instructors move right through, and they do a great job as a performing arts group,” said Patterson. MLK, pg. 2

MLK, continued. More activities continue on Friday with the first ever Black Entrepreneurs Network. The network will be held at 8 p.m. Friday at Court Street Coffee. Committee member Terrance McClain says they are excited to host this networking opportunity. “It’s going to be a good time for us to really network and really start establishing some groups and connections, and even find opportunities for people to enhance their businesses and find resources. So, it’s our first time doing it. Court Street Coffee agreed to host us in their area. I’m super thankful for that, and I’m really excited about this. So, if you are a black entrepreneur or you are considering being a black entrepreneur..., come on out because I think it’s going to be a great time for us all to really start getting together and making things happen in our community,” said McClain. Saturday morning, the schedule includes a story time event at the Seguin Public Library. The MLK Storytime event is for all children ages three to 11, and will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at the library. McClain says this is a great partnership with the library, and families are invited to come and enjoy a story or two Saturday morning. “It was such an effortless partnership and collaboration with them. We just simply reached out and they were extremely excited about it. They had been wanting to do something as well. It was really good to just see the openness and the willingness (by the library) to collaborate,” said McClain. “We talked a little bit, and we came up with some ideas. I think this is good going back to the education piece. Not only are we getting children involved, but we’re also educating them, which is super important. We’re educating them in a fun way. We’re reading books by black authors, we’re talking about the legacy and the struggle, and the things that Doctor King fought for.” The crowning jewel in the weekend schedule will be held on Saturday night. The annual MLK Banquet and Dinner Show will begin with a social hour starting at 5 p.m. in the Seguin Coliseum. The program, including
dinner served by 1838 Grill and a live performance by the Divas of Eastwood, begins at 6 p.m. This is the only paid MLK event. Tickets for the dinner and show are $50 each and tables can be purchased for $500. You can get tickets from any MLK Committee member, or you can get them online. A link to purchase those tickets can be found on the MLK Seguin Facebook page and on the Seguin Radio and Seguin Daily News website, seguintoday.com. The schedule resumes on Sunday, with the MLK Gospel Fest, featuring the Seguin Community Choir. The Gospel music festival begins at 4 p.m. Sunday at New Life Fellowship Church. MLK committee member Herman Lampkin says this will be the first official performance by the community choir. “Much of the event is going to be sort of identical to the way it was in previous years. However, for the past decade or so, we’ve been trying to put together a Seguin Community Choir -- a choir that looks like Seguin, and that is of Seguin. And so, we have finally kind of got some traction on that. And so, we’re welcoming all those who want to come join us in the future. We’ve already kind of started rehearsing. So, we’re set (for this year). So, we have a community choir and that is a step in the right direction. We’re excited to see what they’re going to bring. And we’ll also have other groups and soloists. It’ll be a night full of music,” said Lampkin. Meanwhile, there’s a big schedule change on Monday. MLK, continued. Temperatures are expected to be in the lower 20’s on Monday morning, with highs only reaching 35 degrees on Monday afternoon. The committee says they know many people will be disappointed by this news, but they don’t want to have people exposed to the elements, especially when you consider that it will feel much colder than the actual temperature. Wind chill readings are expected to be around 10 degrees early Monday morning. Although, the march has been cancelled this year, the MLK Day Program will go on. Instead of it being hosted in Central Park, Monday’s program is being moved indoors into Wupperman Little Theatre at Texas Lutheran University. The doors will open around 10:30 Monday morning, with the program set to begin around 11 a.m. Monday. Patterson says this weekend’s lineup tries to offer something for everyone. He says whether you come to one or all of the events, he hopes that the celebration
will appeal to our better angels, and help us all move towards a better world. “I’ve always been one that has been of the belief that we don’t do anything just for the sake of doing it. Nobody wants that. We’re doing this so that we can keep our contribution to society alive. We’re not just here existing. You know, anybody can just exist and move on. But life is a struggle. Not just a black struggle. It’s a struggle. And what we have to do -- as people, not just black, not just white, but as a combined people -- is try to come up with a mechanism by which we can live together, share together and love together, and be one. We’re going to do that. With all of the negatives that’s going on in the world today, we need to try to do something positive and be a part of a positive movement to say, ‘we are tired of that, and we want to get beyond it.’ That’s what the MLK Committee is trying to do -- is to show that we can get beyond it. Former Navarro assistant football coach Tim Holt to be posthumously inducted into CBCA Hall of Honor Celeste Nored, Communications Officer, Navarro ISD
SEGUIN, JAN 10, 2024 – The Coastal Bend Coaches’ Association (CBCA) proudly announces the posthumous induction of Tim Holt, a respected former Navarro Assistant Football Coach, into the CBCA Hall of Honor. Coach Holt is part of the 2024 class, set to be honored alongside another distinguished coach, Lanny Wilson, during the induction ceremony at the Holiday Inn Downtown Marina on Thursday, January 11, in Corpus Christi, TX. Tim Holt’s coaching legacy spans over three decades, with multiple head coaching stops in the Coastal Bend, including Falfurrias, George West (twice), Gregory-Portland, Mathis, and finally Navarro High School in Seguin, TX where he helped the Panthers fo 13-1 for the season. Despite his passing in October 2021 while serving as the Assistant Football Coach at Navarro High School, Coach Holt’s impact on the football community and the lives of those he touched through his whole career continues to be celebrated to this day. Coach Holt had an outstanding career and the profound impact he had both on and off the field was felt by so many. His coaching journey began in 1985, winning a State Championship in Colorado in his first year as a head coach. He later contributed significantly to the success of various programs, including George West, where he led the team to four state quarter-finals in nine years. Beyond his coaching accolades, Coach Holt’s greatest achievements occurred off the field. He was known for his unwavering commitment to building genuine relationships, fostering love and
support among his players. His compassionate and selfless nature extended beyond the game, making a lasting impact on the lives of those he encountered. Born on February 8, 1959, in Ardmore, Oklahoma, Tim Holt’s dedication to coaching was guided by his philosophy of putting God first. He achieved numerous professional milestones, including twotime South Texas Coach of the Year, two state championships, and induction into the Rose State College Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony will be a poignant tribute to Coach Holt’s remarkable career and the lasting legacy he left behind.

Christian “Chris” Krippner Jr. passed peacefully into the arms of his Savior and eternal rest on December 30, 2023. He met the challenges of his declining health over several years with resilience, dignity, and unwavering faith. Chris was born on August 14, 1947 in Owatonna, Minnesota to Evelyn (Zak) and Christian Henry Krippner Sr. He graduated from Marian High School, Owatonna in 1965 and the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis in 1969 with a Bachelor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering degree. He worked for ALCOA as an engineer in their construction department. Chris worked in the design and development of bauxite processing facilities in Kingston, Jamaica and then Conakry in the Republic of Guinea, Africa. His next assignment was in Swansea, Wales where he and Pam met and were married on October 27, 1975. Chris embraced being a Daddy when Alyson was born in Wales, and in 1978 the family relocated to Davenport, Iowa, where Sarah and Rachel were born. In 1983, Chris changed from the aluminum to the steel industry and with Pam, and their three young daughters moved from Iowa to Seguin, where they put down roots. He worked at SMI, later CMC, from 1983 until his retirement in 2017 and was involved in many expansion projects in Magnolia, Arkansas and Seguin. He thought of himself as Texan by choice, and loved watching Longhorn football. Chris was devoted to his “girls.” He always took such great care of Pam, Alyson, Sarah and Rachel; he was the anchor of the family – their rock. As the years passed, he enjoyed the company of his sons-in-law and was a very loving and proud Pops to his grandchildren. We will all miss his beautiful blue eyes, and wide smile. Outside of family and work, Chris was an avid tennis player and fan, always and wherever he lived; he encouraged and coached his daughters, traveled with them to tournaments, enjoyed playing with his Seguin friends, and attended tennis championships at Wimbledon and the US

Open. Travels back to Wales, an Alaskan cruise, a Canadian vacation, and many closer trips within the USA were always a delight. He was a faithful longtime Rotarian and a Paul Harris Fellow until his declining health impacted attendance. He was a member of Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church and served on the vestry in recent years. Chris’s life always reflected his love, his kindness, his goodness, and his compassion for others. Chris was preceded in death by his parents, Christian and Evelyn Krippner, and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Hedley “Jack” and Ivy Smith. Survivors include his loving wife of 48 years, Pamela Krippner; his devoted children, Drs. Alyson Ryan and husband Robert, Sarah Whitley and husband Zac, Rachel Swerdlow and husband Matthew; grandchildren, Kate Ryan, Madison Kirchner, Jackson Kirchner, Thomas Whitley, David Whitley, Evelyn Swerdlow and Reese Swerdlow; his siblings, Anna (Bob) Mills, Allen Krippner, Linda Krippner, and Doug (Lisa) Krippner; his sister-in-law, Gillian ( John) Abraham; numerous nephews, nieces, and dear friends. Special thanks to Ingrid Moreno, who patiently cared for and loved Chris during his illnesses. Thanks also to the doctors, nurses, therapists, chaplains and Hospice staff at GRMC, Seguin, to his Saint Andrews Episcopal Church family, and to the nursing staff at The Blake in New Braunfels. Team Chris was formidable in its support, supplying hope, dignity, comfort and love. A memorial service celebrating Chris life will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church with the Reverend Stephen Shortess officiating. Verna Mae Wahl Bierstedt, age 85 of Seguin, passed away on January 7, 2024. Verna Mae was born in New Braunfels, Texas to Edna (Reiley) Wahl Bruemmer and George Wahl. Verna Mae was a 1956 graduate of Seguin High School. She is a retired Special Ed Teacher. Verna Mae was happily married to the love of her life for 67 ½ years. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Her most treasured times were spent with family, especially at the holidays where she looked forward to playing

Families Seek To Block Controversial Louisiana Law (New Orleans, LA) -- A lawsuit has been filed in Louisiana seeking to block the state’s new ban on transgender health care for kids. Attorneys for five families argue that the law violates the state constitution’s right to privacy. State lawmakers approved the ban last year. It outlaws everything from puberty-blocking drugs to gender reassignment surgery. Louisiana is one of 22 states banning or restricting such transgender care. NJ Lawmaker’s Bill Would Test Baby Food For Metals (Trenton, NJ) -- One New Jersey Congressman is calling on the U.S. government to mandate testing of baby food for metal contaminants. Democrat Frank Pallone is one of several lawmakers behind the Improving Newborns’ Food and Nutrition Testing Safety -- or INFANTS Act, which requires finished baby food products, including infant formula, to be tested for toxic heavy metals including lead, cadmium, and mercury. These contaminants can cause lowered IQ and developmental issues. There is currently no federal mandate for testing finished baby food products for contaminants like heavy metals. Defense Secretary Remains Hospitalized Following Treatment For Prostate Cancer (Arlington, VA) -- The Pentagon has confirmed that Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin was admitted to the ICU with complications from a treatment for prostate cancer. Austin was apparently diagnosed with prostate cancer in December and underwent a minimally invasive procedure to treat it. Days later he was admitted to Walter Reed on January 1st with complications from the procedure, including nausea and severe abdominal pain. He remains hospitalized with officials stressing that he is expected to make a full recovery. At the same time, Austin is facing heavy criticism as his hospitalization was not reported to top Defense officials or the White House until days later. Measles Outbreak Reported In Philadelphia (Philadelphia, PA) -- A Pennsylvania day care center is experiencing an outbreak of measles. Health officials say cases first started being reported last month at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and they were notified days later of more cases at a nearby day care center. So far, eight cases have been reported, five of which have required hospitalization. As local officials try to isolate the outbreak, Philadelphia’s health commissioner says, “we’re holding our breath.” Measles can be deadly, but is preventable through vaccination. It’s usually spread through coughing and sneezing.
