Dinner, show offered at this year’s MLK Banquet Darren Dunn
(Seguin) -- The ticket deadline is rapidly approaching for this year’s Martin Luther King Jr. Annual Banquet. The banquet is the only paid event in this year’s five-day MLK celebration in Seguin. The events are all hosted by the Seguin MLK Day Planning Committee, and the banquet is said to feature a night of great food and entertainment. MLK Committee member Herman Lampkin says they are excited about Saturday night’s lineup. “We’re going to start out with the social event. As they come in, they kind of mingle with the people that you know and even some that you don’t know,” said Lampkin. “Then after that, 1838 (Grill) is going to be serving the food, and we’re going to eat. After we get everybody seated, then we will have a play (performed) by the Divas of Eastwood.” The performance by the Divas of Eastwood will be more than just a theatrical production. MLK, pg. 2

MLK, continued. The group, from San Antonio, has been performing for years now -- offering a blend of theater, music and poetry. Divas of Eastwood Co-Founder Danielle King says their first show started with a salute to a big part of the AfricanAmerican arts scene, which existed prior to the wide availability of performance spaces to black performers. “The Divas of Eastwood was formed when the Renaissance Guild, which was San Antonio’s premiere black theater company at the time, did a production about the Chitlin’ Circuit and music in the San Antonio area. So, in San Antonio during the Chitlin’ Circuit time, one of few clubs that was here, was called the Eastwood Country Club on the east side of San Antonio. So, we did a performance called the Divas of Eastwood, and it was talking about the performers that came through this club -- all of the wonderful performers and everything. We celebrated the Chitlin’ Circuit and we did that show and we sang music. We we believe in ‘edutainment.’ We’re going to perform, we’re going to sing, you’re going to have fun, but you’re going to learn as well,” said King. Since that inagural show, the troupe has been performing a number of original shows at a variety of venues. King says they continue to try to bring a high level of entertainment and education to each one of their performances. “We have just been truly blessed and truly gifted in this edutainment field of life, of telling people about our experiences and expanding people’s knowledge about African American history and African American entertainers,” said King. Saturday night’s show is called “The Lasting Power of I Have a Dream.” King says the Divas will bring

their unique perspective to the audience, as they reflect on what led up to Dr. King delivering his most iconic speech. “We decided to recognize and pay tribute to the 60th anniversary of the ‘I Have a Dream’ speech, that MLK did. So, we’re paying tribute and homage to that, and giving people a little bit of background on how that speech almost didn’t happen,” said King. Dr. King originally planned to deliver a very different speech that day, but ultimately he pivoted, and the rest -- is now history. The Divas of Eastwood will help to tell that story during their performance in Seguin on Saturday night. “He got a move from the Holy Spirit, that said -‘No, let’s talk about this.’ And he put that speech to the side -- right in the middle (of it) -- and he started his ‘I Have a Dream’ speech. (Gospel legend) Mahalia Jackson was actually instumental with him going into that, because she shouted out from the stage and she said ‘Tell them about the dream, Martin. Tell them about the dream.’ So, he left that speech and went into his ‘I Have a Dream speech, where he improvised and created most of...that entire speech,” said King. They’ll be some dramatic representations during the performance along with some songs. King says they want to entertain the audience, while also helping us all to better understand this part of American history. “We’ll do the singing, and we’ll do the acting for sure. Possibly not the poetry this time, because we only have 45 minutes, and we want to make sure we pay as much homage to that Dream speech. So, we will do a part of the Dream speech, and we’ll be telling you parts of the history of what happened that day. MLK, pg. 3

MLK, continued. Whether it was some of the changes, and like I said, how the speech almost didn’t happen. There are several other factors that came into play as to why the speech almost did not happen at all. So, it’s going to be edutainment – telling you the history of the speech, and then we will be doing the last part of the speech ourselves on stage,” said King. Tickets are $50 each and they can be purchased today from any Seguin MLK Day Committee member. You can also purchase the tickets online. MLK Committee member Joe Patterson says this will be a special night, and it’s something that you shouldn’t miss. “And this is the one time that, as we say in the black community, you can put your Sunday-Go-To-Meeting clothes on and come out and lounge and have a good time and relax. Nobody is uptight about the play. It’s a clean play. It’s based on the struggle and the fight that Martin Luther King had put forward while he was on Earth. We need to keep that going, because...we don’t want to forget our history. So, it’s always good to remind people every chance we get that the struggle continues,” said Patterson. Patterson says the ticket price was increased this year. He says that was done to make sure that they could cover the costs of the meal and the entertainment that will be offered that night. He says it’s a reasonable price to pay, when you consider what people will get that evening. Patterson says they also want to remind people that this a fundraiser and the money raised will help to support the ongoing work of the Seguin MLK Committee. “Acting as and being the treasurer for this organization, I am constantly on pins and needles when
it comes to (people saying) ‘we want to do (something). Then I’m thinking -- every time we want to do something, there’s money attached. Nothing is free...and our people in the community have to understand that we accept donations, but at the same time, we have got to pay for what we do. There’s got to be a funding mechanism that can support that, and right now, $30 wasn’t the number that we needed. We had to go up on our tickets in order to get enough money to pay our way, to make sure that we would be able to put on the best function possible, and not have to beg people to help us pay for it,” said Patterson. The doors open to the Seguin MLK Banquet/ Dinner Show at 5 p.m. Saturday in the Seguin Coliseum. The social hour will be followed by the dinner and program, along with the performance by the Divas of Eastwood. The five-day MLK celebration Seguin begins on Thursday with a church service at New St. James Baptist Church. The schedule continues on Friday with the Seguin ISD Choir Showcase at Seguin High School. There will be a Black Entrepreneur Networking event Friday night at Court Street Coffee. Saturday morning, the schedule includes a storytime event at the Seguin Public Library. The MLK Gospel Fest, featuring the Seguin Community Choir, will be held on Sunday afternoon at New Life Fellowship Church. The schedule wraps up with the annual MLK Freedom March on Monday morning. The march will start outside of the Wupperman Little Theatre at Texas Lutheran University. It will leave TLU at 10 a.m. Monday and travel down Court Street to downtown Seguin, where a program will follow in Central Park. The Texans are gearing up for their first trip to the postseason since 2019. The Rockets failed to pick up a win in South Beach. Cowboys Host Packers In Wild Card Round On Sunday (Arlington, TX) -- The Cowboys are turning their attention to their Wild Card round opponent. Dallas will host Jordan Love and the Green Bay Packers on Sunday afternoon at AT&T Stadium. The Cowboys enter the postseason as NFC East champions after ending the regular season with a 12-and-5 record. CeeDee Lamb ranked first in the NFL with 135 receptions, second with 1,749 yards and third with 12 touchdowns. In other news, ESPN reports that cornerback Stephon Gilmore’s MRI results showed no significant damage to his shoulder. The Cowboys have lost four straight to the Packers dating back to the 2017 Divisional Round playoff game. Texans Host Browns In Wild Card Round On Saturday (Houston, TX) -- The Texans are gearing up for their first trip to the postseason since 2019. Houston will host Joe Flacco and the Cleveland Browns on Saturday afternoon at NRG Stadium. The Texans enter the postseason as champions of the AFC South after closing out the regular season at 10-and-7. Rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud has thrown for 4,108 yards, 23 touchdowns and five interceptions this season. The Texans lost to the Browns 36-22 in Week 16 when Stroud was sidelined with a concussion. Houston has lost four straight to Cleveland dating back to 2020.
Rockets Lose To Heat (Miami, FL) -- The Rockets failed to pick up a win in South Beach. Houston lost to the Miami Heat 120-113 at the Kaseya Center. Fred VanVleet led the way with 32 points while knocking down 7-of-14 shots from beyond the arc. Alperen Sengun recorded a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds to go along with three steals on the defensive end. The Rockets have lost two of three to fall to 18-and-17. They will visit the Chicago Bulls tomorrow night. Mavericks Host Grizzlies Tonight (Dallas, TX) -- The Mavericks are aiming for their fourth straight win. Dallas will host the Memphis Grizzlies tonight at the American Airlines Center. The Mavs come off a 115-108 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Sunday. Kyrie Irving led the charge with 35 points, eight rebounds, five assists, three steals and a pair of blocks. Luka Doncic contributed with 34 points, six boards and eight assists. Dallas is sixth in the West at 22-and15. Dante Exum and Dereck Lively the Second have been ruled out for the game, while Grant Williams is listed as probable. Stars Defeat Wild (St. Paul, MN) -- The Stars snapped their three-game losing skid on the road. Dallas shutout the Minnesota Wild 4-0 at the Xcel Energy Center. Radek Faksa and Roope Hintz scored shorthanded goals in the victory. Tyler Seguin and Jason Robertson also found the back of the net, while Matt Murray made 23 saves in net. The Stars are third in the Central Division at 23-11-and-5. They return home to host the Wild tomorrow night.

Christian “Chris” Krippner Jr. passed peacefully into the arms of his Savior and eternal rest on December 30, 2023. He met the challenges of his declining health over several years with resilience, dignity, and unwavering faith. Chris was born on August 14, 1947 in Owatonna, Minnesota to Evelyn (Zak) and Christian Henry Krippner Sr. He graduated from Marian High School, Owatonna in 1965 and the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis in 1969 with a Bachelor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering degree. He worked for ALCOA as an engineer in their construction department. Chris worked in the design and development of bauxite processing facilities in Kingston, Jamaica and then Conakry in the Republic of Guinea, Africa. His next assignment was in Swansea, Wales where he and Pam met and were married on October 27, 1975. Chris embraced being a Daddy when Alyson was born in Wales, and in 1978 the family relocated to Davenport, Iowa, where Sarah and Rachel were born. In 1983, Chris changed from the aluminum to the steel industry and with Pam, and their three young daughters moved from Iowa to Seguin, where they put down roots. He worked at SMI, later CMC, from 1983 until his retirement in 2017 and was involved in many expansion projects in Magnolia, Arkansas and Seguin. He thought of himself as Texan by choice, and loved watching Longhorn football. Chris was devoted to his “girls.” He always took such great care of Pam, Alyson, Sarah and Rachel; he was the anchor of the family – their rock. As the years passed, he enjoyed the company of his sons-in-law and was a very loving and proud Pops to his grandchildren. We will all miss his beautiful blue eyes, and wide smile. Outside of family and work, Chris was an avid tennis player and fan, always and wherever he lived; he encouraged and coached his daughters, traveled with them to tournaments, enjoyed playing with his Seguin friends, and attended tennis championships at Wimbledon and the US

Open. Travels back to Wales, an Alaskan cruise, a Canadian vacation, and many closer trips within the USA were always a delight. He was a faithful longtime Rotarian and a Paul Harris Fellow until his declining health impacted attendance. He was a member of Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church and served on the vestry in recent years. Chris’s life always reflected his love, his kindness, his goodness, and his compassion for others. Chris was preceded in death by his parents, Christian and Evelyn Krippner, and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Hedley “Jack” and Ivy Smith. Survivors include his loving wife of 48 years, Pamela Krippner; his devoted children, Drs. Alyson Ryan and husband Robert, Sarah Whitley and husband Zac, Rachel Swerdlow and husband Matthew; grandchildren, Kate Ryan, Madison Kirchner, Jackson Kirchner, Thomas Whitley, David Whitley, Evelyn Swerdlow and Reese Swerdlow; his siblings, Anna (Bob) Mills, Allen Krippner, Linda Krippner, and Doug (Lisa) Krippner; his sister-in-law, Gillian ( John) Abraham; numerous nephews, nieces, and dear friends. Special thanks to Ingrid Moreno, who patiently cared for and loved Chris during his illnesses. Thanks also to the doctors, nurses, therapists, chaplains and Hospice staff at GRMC, Seguin, to his Saint Andrews Episcopal Church family, and to the nursing staff at The Blake in New Braunfels. Team Chris was formidable in its support, supplying hope, dignity, comfort and love. A memorial service celebrating Chris life will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church with the Reverend Stephen Shortess officiating. Verna Mae Wahl Bierstedt, age 85 of Seguin, passed away on January 7, 2024. Verna Mae was born in New Braunfels, Texas to Edna (Reiley) Wahl Bruemmer and George Wahl. Verna Mae was a 1956 graduate of Seguin High School. She is a retired Special Ed Teacher. Verna Mae was happily married to the love of her life for 67 ½ years. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Her most treasured times were spent with family, especially at the holidays where she looked forward to playing

AI Helping With Health (Undated) -- Artificial intelligence is aiding people with their health. According to the January Newsletter from The National Institutes of Health, researchers are looking at how AI can improve healthcare. AI is already being used in medical imaging by searching through CT and MRI scans for health issues, like cancer and heart disease. Dr. Despina Kontos, an AI researcher at Columbia University says, “AI can look at images very closely, in a way that’s much more detailed than we can do with the human eye “. Chatbots are also becoming popular to find health information, and with a shortage in mental health care providers, may be able to fill in some gaps. Washington Legislative Session Began Monday (Olympia, WA) -- Washington’s legislative session began Monday. Lawmakers will meet for 60 days and have several key issues to decide. Climate change tops the list. There are bills that would increase transparency for oil and gas companies while another bill would link Washington’s carbon market with California and Quebec. There are bills to increase affordable housing and limit rent increases. Other bills deal with the fentanyl crisis making Naloxone more accessible. JN.1 Variant Makes Up More Than Half Of U.S. Covid Cases (Undated) -- The CDC says a new COVID variant is now accounting for more than half of the cases in the U.S. As of January 5th, the strain JN.1 makes up more than 60-percent of U.S. cases and is the most widely circulated COVID variant globally. It is also the dominant variant in Europe and is on the rise in Asia. The World Health Organization classified JN.1 as a “variant of interest” last month, but said current evidence shows risk to the public health was low from the strain. U.S. Hospitals Requiring Masks (Undated) -- Hospitals across the country are telling people to mask-up as flu and COVID-19 cases are on the rise. The viruses have been on the rise for weeks, and health officials are predicting infections will increase this month. Cases have been spiking in 31 states in the weeks leading up to the Holidays, with more and more hospitals across the U.S. requiring masks as a result. Just last week, New York City initiated a mask mandate for public hospitals along with some hospitals in Los Angeles and Massachusetts. Officials say vaccinations are down this year, and that the JN.1 variant spreads more easily, but there is no evidence it’s more severe than past variants.
