The city of Seguin accepting applications for Business Improvement Grant program Darren Dunn
(Seguin) -- Local businesses looking to upgrade their look or operations this new year, might be able to get a big assist from the city of Seguin. The city is once again accepting applications for its Business Improvement Grant, or BIG program. The BIG program is a reimbursementbased grant program aimed at the development and expansion of business enterprises within the city. Seguin Economic Development Director Josh Schneuker says the popular program is all about showing support for small businesses in this community. “The city council has approved funding in the amount of $150,000 for our Business Improvement Grant. This is
now, I believe, the third year that we’ve had funding dedicated to the grant. What we’re trying to do here is really provide some of our local businesses or our small businesses here with some grant funding to help offset some of those costs that go towards, facade improvements, site improvements, signage improvements and other real property improvements. In order to encourage businesses to consider making those types of capital improvement projects at their place of business, the city has established this and we want to work hand-in-hand with our small businesses to help promote that and really help revitalize the city through this partnership on improvement projects for our small businesses,” said Schneuker. (Seguin) -- The holiday season is over, and now it’s time to start taking down those decorations. If you’re not sure what to do with your real Christmas tree, the city of Seguin is offering a few suggestions for you this year. Seguin Public Information Officer Jennifer Sourdellia says residents wanting to dispose of their live Christmas trees can simply place them out at the curb with their garbage. “We’ve got two different ways that they can get rid of their discarded live Christmas trees. First, I want to remind everyone to please, if you’re going to do this, remove all
the lights, the decorations and tree stand before placing your tree at your curb. We will pick that up on your regular trash day. Christmas trees can also be picked up during brush collection. So, if you want to check and see what your brush collection route is, please visit please seguintexas.gov., click on the GIS icon. We’ve got a city services app where you can type in your address and that will determine your brush zone and collection schedule. If you’ve got any other questions, you can just call our citizen relations at 830-401-2445. It’s as easy as that,” said Sourdellia.

BIG, continued. Schneuker says businesses that receive the grant will be eligible to receive a 75 percent matching grant, that covers improvements up to $10,000. He says that money can go a long way towards helping businesses make any necessary improvements. It is a reimbursement grant, but the grant helps to make these improvements more affordable for local businesses. “You know, it is the responsibility for the business to pay for all the improvements upfront, and upon completion of the project, the business will submit project completion documents. That way we can verify that the projects have been completed. We’ll also go out and take the time to take a look at the improvements ourselves, and once we validate that everything has been done according to their application and their agreement that we signed with the business, we then will distribute the grant funding that we’ve we promised to provide the business. So, we provide up to 75 percent matching grant to the business in an amount not to exceed $10,000. This is a program that obviously can really help some offset some of those costs to our businesses and again really help make some of those improvement projects, that our businesses might have been thinking about -- you know, realistic and doable through the availability of these funds,” said Schneuker. Applications are now available online via the economic development office’s website, SeguinEDC. com. Schneuker says everything that the business needs to participate in the program is available online. “There is a tab at the top of our website, and there you’ll find the Business Improvement Grant page on our website. On that page, you’ll find everything you need to know about the grant program, (including) an overview
of the grant, the application, (and) the guidelines. This year, we’ve actually created an online application portal where businesses can submit their applications directly through the portal. They’ll have the ability to upload all supporting documents to the portal. Once the application is submitted, we will get notified of that submission through the portal and we’ll begin the review process. We will get back to the business within 20 to 30 business days following the submission of that application,” said Schneuker. Seguin City Manager Steve Parker says the program was first launced in August of 2021. He says since that time, they have found it be a very successful program for small businesses in Seguin. “We are very excited to be able to offer this grant to the community again for another year. The BIG program enables our small businesses to partner with the city on projects that will help improve the physical condition of existing commercial facilities and improve business operations and efficiency through the addition of new equipment and machinery. These investments are a win for the city and a win for our local businesses,” said Parker. Applications are due by the close of business on the last day of each month. Applications submitted after the last day of the month will be reviewed the following month, subject to funding availability. SEGUIN, Texas -- The Texas Lutheran women’s basketball team (11-3, 4-1 SCAC) defeated Dallas, 83-58, inside Memorial Gymnasium on Saturday night. The Bulldogs controlled the game from wire-to-wire for their fifth wire-to-wire victory of the season. The Bulldogs would control the glass, outrebounding the Crusaders 56-28, and made use of a 40-28 advantage in the paint. TLU’s stifling defense defined the game as the Bulldogs scored 25 of their 83 points off turnovers, forcing 19 Dallas turnovers. Junior Kayla Presley (Kyle/San Marcos) spear-headed the effort on the glass with a game-high 10 rebounds while Tanyse Moehrig (Spring Branch/Smithson Valley) grabbed nine rebounds off the bench and Lauren Sansano (San Antonio/FEAST) adding seven boards. Kailee Mulkey (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) would guide the Bulldog defense with five steals, matching her career-high. Kayla Presley scored a season and game-high 16 points in addition to her 10 rebounds for her first career double-double. Sansano continues to be one of the SCAC’s most efficient bucket getters, scoring 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Senior Juliett Martinez (San Antonio/Reagan) finished with a season-high ten points off the bench, two points off her career-high of 12 points obtained at St. Mary’s. Emerald St. Laurent (The Woodlands/Oak Ridge) matched her career-highs with ten points and three rebounds. Moehrig would dish out a career-high five assists in addition to four points, nine rebounds, and a block.
TLU opened the game on a 6-0 run led by St. Laurent and Sansano setting the tone for a game in which the Bulldogs would never trail. Sansano and St. Laurent would score six points each in the first quarter as the Bulldogs led 21-15 after the first quarter. Texas Lutheran stretched its lead to double digits in the second quarter which is where it would remain for the remainder of the game, taking a 39-27 lead into halftime. Sansano paced all scorers with ten points in the first half. The Bulldogs would cruise for the remainder of the second half as once again all active players saw action. The Bulldogs would lead by as many as 29 points in the second half. Martinez would score all ten of her points in the fourth quarter. With the win, TLU improves to 11-3 for just the second time since joining the SCAC in 2013-14. Texas Lutheran will be back in action Friday, Jan. 5, as they travel to Shreveport, Louisiana, to begin their three-week, five-game road trip at Centenary for their first game of the 2024 calendar year. Russell “Rusty” Eric Reininger, age 63 of Seguin, passed through death into eternal life in the early morning of December 27, 2023 after a courageous 7 month battle with cancer. Rusty was born on May 26, 1960 in Seguin, Texas to Marlene Martha (Felsing) and James Edward Reininger. Rusty grew up here in Seguin where he attended St. James Catholic School and later graduated from Seguin High School in 1978. He loved telling stories of his childhood roaming the streets of Seguin on his bicycle with Jay Harkins, running wild with the Schreiwer boys in Geronimo, annual sausage and pannas making days, and of course the many family camp outs with all the cousins at Nana and Pampaw’s river lot in New Braunfels. Family meant absolutely everything to Rusty. His freshman year at Seguin High School, he met his lifelong friend, Jaiy Braulick, who has since become as close as family. After high school, Rusty followed in his Pampaw’s and Uncle Buddy Felsing’s footsteps and went to work at Geronimo Woodworks building custom cabinets. There he became an excellent carpenter and learned skills that have since brought joy and beauty to our entire family. After about 10 years in woodworking, he decided to go to college at Southwest Texas where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in construction technology in 1993. In 1988, Rusty and Jennifer were introduced in the teller line at Seguin State Bank where Jennifer worked. Their first date was dinner followed by a night of dancing at the Midnight Rodeo. Rusty was an excellent country dancer and mom said they danced perfectly together from their very first dance. Rusty and Jennifer were married on January 11, 1992 at Faith Lutheran Church. Rusty and Jennifer created a beautiful life together with the girls. In 2004, Rusty and Jennifer bought 8 acres with pine trees just outside of town. With his craftsmanship, he built a house full of custom woodwork for Jennifer and the girls. Rusty had a meticulous attention to detail and he hand selected each piece of trim. Rusty believed in working hard and making everyone around him feel valued and loved. This was a quality that made him a great fit at SpawGlass General Contractors where he worked as

an estimator for the past 17 years. Rusty enjoyed bowling 9 pin at Zorn Bowling Club, family camping trips with his brother Craig’s family, listening to Americana music on 92.1 FM, trips down to the coast singing along to Pat Green with the girls, trips to the Frio River, making as he called “biiiiig breffasts” for the girls each morning before school, and country music dancing. Rusty was an excellent dancer and when they went dancing as a family, Jennifer, Claire, and Madelyn would fight over who got to dance with Rusty to their favorite songs. Jennifer and the girls thank Kalei, Stacey, Janie, and Brittany, the kind nurses at GRMC who cared for and helped Rusty feel comfortable from the moment he arrived in the ICU on Christmas Day. They especially thank Hannah McCracken who Rusty called his “hero” because she guided and assisted Rusty and Jennifer as they navigated his cancer battle this year. Even on his last day, he continued to be incredibly moved by the support, prayers and acts of love shown to him. Rusty is preceded in death by his father. Survivors include his loving wife of 31 years, Jennifer Reininger; daughters, Claire Reininger and Madelyn Reininger; mother, Marlene Reininger; brother, Craig Reininger and wife Patricia; sister, Donna Holdgraf and husband Gary; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Diana and Ken Rippstein; brother-in-law, Jason Rippstein and wife Cara; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving family members and many friends. Visitation will begin on Tuesday, January 2, 2024 at 2 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Seguin, followed by funeral services at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Toby Burk officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be Taylor Holdgraf, Travis Rippstein, Mason Reininger, Kuy Rippstein, Tanner Felsing and Tait Reininger. Wendy Judith Parker, age 55 of Seguin passed away on Tuesday, November 14, 2023. Wendy was born in Rochester, New York to Maureen Babachicos and Ronald E. Corron. Wendy was an amazing soul who was cherished by so many. If you met Wendy, you loved Wendy. Wendy had a way of making strangers feel like they’d known her for their entire life. She lit up every room with her smile and warm spirit. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved music, movies, and anything that included her loving
family and girlfriends. Wendy attended Clear Lake High School in Houston, Texas and went on to achieve a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and Management from the University of Houston-Clear Lake. She also achieved a Master’s Degree in Strategic Communications and Leadership from Seton Hall University. Wendy had an impressive professional career. Fresh out of high school, her unique story started in the mailroom at the Boeing Company where she went on to become Communications Manager in Houston for the Space Division and in San Antonio for the Military Aircraft Division. She spent almost 28 years with Boeing. This was a true success story of grit

and determination. She left Boeing in 2015 to become the Sr. Corporate Communications Manager for the Public Affairs Division at Zachry Construction in San Antonio, Texas. Wendy was preceded in death by her father. Wendy met her soulmate, Steve Parker, and they had a magical love affair for the last 15 years. Survivors include her loving husband; her sons Hayden Starr of San Antonio Texas, Gage Parker of Lubbock Texas; daughters Hannah Locklear of Tacoma, Washington and Madison Parker of Austin, Texas. Wendy was also Gigi to two grandsons Julian and Deacon Starr. She is also survived by her Mother Maureen Corron and Maureen’s companion Jim Bordelon, her brother Ryan Corron and his companion Vickie Hester, her sister Catherine Carter and husband Pat Carter, and her daughter-in-law Tori Starr. She had some of the best girlfriends who were always there for her as she was for them. A Celebration of Life Service for Wendy will be held on January 7, 2024, at the Seguin Events Complex (Coliseum) from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. with remarks given at 3 p.m. by the Rev. Chris Larson, the Rev. Melvin Ernest Dojahn, age 94 of Seguin, Texas, passed away on December 30, 2023. Melvin was born on September 10, 1929 in Karnes City, Texas, to Herman and Annie (Retzloff ) Dojahn. Melvin is preceded in death by his loving wife of 54 years, Dorothy Mae Kutz Dojahn, his parents and his siblings, Clara Katzer, George Dojahn, Elenora Hackbarth, and Milda Schulenburg. Krippner
Christian “Chris” Krippner Jr. passed peacefully into the arms of his Savior and eternal rest on December 30, 2023. He met the challenges of his declining health over several years with resilience, dignity, and unwavering faith. Chris was born on August 14, 1947 in Owatonna, Minnesota to Evelyn (Zak) and Christian Henry Krippner Sr. He graduated from Marian High School, Owatonna in 1965 and the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis in 1969 with a Bachelor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering degree. He worked for ALCOA as an engineer in their construction department. Chris worked in the design and development of bauxite processing facilities in Kingston, Jamaica and then Conakry in the Republic of Guinea, Africa. His next assignment was in Swansea, Wales where he and Pam met and were married on October 27, 1975. Chris embraced being a Daddy when Alyson was born in Wales, and in 1978 the family relocated to Davenport, Iowa, where Sarah and Rachel were born. In 1983, Chris changed from the aluminum to the steel industry and with Pam, and their three young daughters moved from Iowa to Seguin, where they put down roots. He worked at SMI, later CMC, from 1983 until his retirement in 2017 and was involved in many expansion projects in Magnolia, Arkansas and Seguin. He thought of himself as Texan by choice, and loved watching Longhorn football. Chris was devoted to his “girls.” He always took such great care of Pam, Alyson, Sarah and Rachel; he was the anchor of the family – their rock. As the years passed, he enjoyed the company of his sons-in-law and was a very loving and proud Pops to his grandchildren. We will all miss his beautiful blue eyes, and wide smile. Outside of family and work, Chris was an avid tennis player and fan, always and wherever he lived; he encouraged and coached his daughters, traveled with them to tournaments, enjoyed playing with his Seguin friends, and attended tennis championships at Wimbledon and the US
Open. Travels back to Wales, an Alaskan cruise, a Canadian vacation, and many closer trips within the USA were always a delight. He was a faithful longtime Rotarian and a Paul Harris Fellow until his declining health impacted attendance. He was a member of Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church and served on the vestry in recent years. Chris’s life always reflected his love, his kindness, his goodness, and his compassion for others. Chris was preceded in death by his parents, Christian and Evelyn Krippner, and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Hedley “Jack” and Ivy Smith. Survivors include his loving wife of 48 years, Pamela Krippner; his devoted children, Drs. Alyson Ryan and husband Robert, Sarah Whitley and husband Zac, Rachel Swerdlow and husband Matthew; grandchildren, Kate Ryan, Madison Kirchner, Jackson Kirchner, Thomas Whitley, David Whitley, Evelyn Swerdlow and Reese Swerdlow; his siblings, Anna (Bob) Mills, Allen Krippner, Linda Krippner, and Doug (Lisa) Krippner; his sister-in-law, Gillian ( John) Abraham; numerous nephews, nieces, and dear friends. Special thanks to Ingrid Moreno, who patiently cared for and loved Chris during his illnesses. Thanks also to the doctors, nurses, therapists, chaplains and Hospice staff at GRMC, Seguin, to his Saint Andrews Episcopal Church family, and to the nursing staff at The Blake in New Braunfels. Team Chris was formidable in its support, supplying hope, dignity, comfort and love. A memorial service celebrating Chris life will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church with the Reverend Stephen Shortess officiating. California Becomes First State Offering Health Insurance To Illegal Immigrants (Sacramento, Ca) -- California is becoming the first state to offer health insurance to all illegal immigrants. There are more than two-million undocumented immigrants in the Golden State. Experts estimate that providing health insurance for illegal immigrants will cost Californians upwards of three-billion-dollars a year. CDC Says Flu Cases Rise In Much Of The U.S. (Atlanta, GA) -- Federal health officials say flu cases are on the rise across much of the country. According to the CDC’s weekly influenza report, there was a 16-percent jump in the number of people testing positive last week. Over a dozen states including Alabama, Georgia and New York reported “very high” levels of respiratory illness and nearly 20 other states had levels classified as “high.” The CDC noted six pediatric deaths bringing the total to 20 so far this flu season. Dry January Underway (New York, NY) -- It’s a new year and with that comes what’s known as Dry January. During the month-long challenge, health officials are urging people to stop drinking alcohol - or at least cut back. The research firm Morning Consult says about 90-percent of those taking part in Dry January do so seeking health benefits. Seventy-three percent do so to save money. Heavy drinking is associated with hypertension, heart disease, stroke, liver damage and various cancers. “Disagree Better” Governors Emphasize Mental Health Crisis (Washington, DC) -- Two state governors known nationally for leading a “Disagree Better” initiative are focusing on the mental health effects of social media on young people. Speaking on NBC’s Meet the Press, Utah Republican Spencer Cox and Colorado Democrat Jared Polis said social media is a major reason why suicide, depression, anxiety, and self-harm rates have been “skyrocketing” among teenagers. They both agreed that social media companies need to be held accountable. Cox is chair and Polis is vice-chair of the National Governors Association.

CCSCT Releases Utility Assistance Application for 2023 Applications are available for the Comprehensive Energy Assistance Program (C.E.A.P.) provided by the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs through the CCSCT.
