EASTER SUNDAY

We Come Together as God’s People

Prelude Pavan-Almand Matthew Locke Festival Brass; Dr. Michelle Louer, conductor (1630-1677)

Credo (from Missa Paschalis) Jan Dismas Zelenka Sanctuary Choir (1679-1745)

Caitlin Stewart, Kristin Shaffer, Mitzi Westra, Will Upham, soloists

I. Credo in unum Deum

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all ages, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten not made, being of one substance with the Father, through Whom all things were made: Who for us and for our salvation came down from heaven,

II. Et incarnatus est was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary, and was made man:

III. Crucifixus who for us, too, was crucified under Pontius Pilate, suffered, and was buried:

IV. Et resurrexit the third day He rose according to the Scriptures, ascended into heaven, and is seated on the right hand of the Father: He shall come again with glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom shall have no end. And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of life, Who proceeds from the Father and the Son: Who together with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified: Who spoke by the prophets. And I believe one holy, Christian, and apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and life of the age to come. Amen.

Text: The Nicene Creed (Ecumenical)

Résurrection (from Symphonie-Passion, Op. 23)

Marcel Dupré Dr. John Allegar, organ (1886-1971)

Let the Bright Seraphim Malcom Archer Sanctuary Choir and Organ with Preston Rogers, soloist (b. 1952)

Let the bright seraphim in burning row, their loud uplifted angel trumpets blow.

Let the cherubic host in tuneful choirs touch their immortal harps with golden wires while those just spirits that wear victorious crowns singing everlastingly devout and holy psalms.

And I heard the voice of the harpers playing on their harps, and they sang as it were a new song before the throne. Save that they were redeemed.

And above him stood the seraphim, One came unto the other and said: “Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord of the hosts.

* Call to Worship Mac McDonald (9 AM)

Rev. Audrey F. Thorne (11 AM)

One: We thought the cross was the end. We thought that when the stone rolled over the tomb, that was it.

All: But this is it: the dead are living; the cross is empty; the stone is rolled, and one word describes it all: Alleluia! Jesus is risen!

One: We thought you had said your final word. We thought those with the power had won. We thought that when you cried out, that was it.

All: But this is it: the word breathes; the powers are defeated; the final cry was only the beginning, and one word says it all: Alleluia! Jesus is risen!

One: We thought the story was finished. We thought the hope had ended. We thought that when the tomb was sealed, that was it.

All: But this is it: the story has just begun; the hope is newly born; the tomb is empty, and one word says it all: Alleluia! Jesus is risen!

One: This is the news:

All: Jesus is risen!

One: This is the moment:

All: Jesus is alive!

One: This is the gospel:

All: Jesus is with us!

One: We thought that when they crucified you, death had defeated life, and that was it. But this is it:

All: Love is stronger than death, and one word says it all:

One: Alleluia! Jesus is risen!

* Prayer of Adoration

* Processional Hymn #123 Jesus Christ Is Risen Today

Invitation to Confession

Prayer of Confession

Almighty God, in raising Jesus from the grave, you shattered the power of sin and death.

We confess that we remain captive to doubt and fear, bound by the ways that lead to death.

Forgive our dread of dying, our hopelessness, and set us free for the victory of Jesus Christ, who was dead but lives among us.

Help us trust your power to change our lives and make us new, that we may know the joy of life abundant given in Jesus Christ, the risen Lord. (Silent Prayer)

Assurance of God’s Grace

* Response of Praise

Preis und Dank (from Easter Oratorio, BWV 249)

Bleibe, Herr, dein Lobgesang.

Text: attr. Christian Friedrich Henrici (Picander)

J.S. Bach (1685-1750)

Praise and thanks remain, Lord, your hymn of praise. Hell and devil are conquered, its gates are destroyed. Rejoice, you rescued tongues, so that you are heard in heaven. Open, O heavens, your magnificent drawbridges, the Lion of Judah approaches in triumph!

One: This is the good news: the grave is empty, Christ is risen.

All: Alleluia!

One: This is the good news: the light shines in the darkness and the darkness can never put it out.

All: Alleluia!

One: This is the good news: once we were no people, now we are God’s people.

All: Alleluia! Amen.

Prayers of the People and The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
