THIS SERVICE IS A REPLAY OF:

TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST
We Come Together as God’s People
Prelude Symphony No. 84 in E♭ major, I: Largo-Allegro Franz Josef Haydn Festival Orchestra; Dr. Michelle Louer, conductor (1732-1809)
Welcome Rev. Christopher A. Henry
Choral Call to Worship
Awake the Harp (from The Creation) Franz Josef Haydn Sanctuary Choir and Festival Orchestra; Dr. Michelle Louer, conductor
Awake the harp, the lyre awake, And let your joyful song resound. Rejoice in the Lord, the mighty God; For He both heaven and earth Has clothed in stately dress.
Text: Gottfried van Swieten (1733-1803)
* Call to Worship Rev. Audrey F. Thorne
One: If you are eager for joy, you are among friends:
All: here we celebrate the goodness of God.
One: If you are overcome by heartbreak, you are among friends:
All: here we offer comfort to the grieving.
One: If you are filled with questions, you are among friends:
All: here we nurture faith and make space for doubt.
One: If you are seeking peace, you are among friends:
All: here we find the centering presence of God.
One: Let us worship the God who gathers us in and holds us together.
* Prayer of Adoration
* Processional Hymn #285
God, You Spin the Whirling Planets Franz Josef Haydn
Invitation to Confession
Prayer of Confession
One: Lord Jesus Christ, you showed us holiness in action. You gave away your power in the service of others and turned our understanding of blessedness on its head.
All: We confess the difficulties we experience in living as you lived and loving as you loved.
One: We confess how easy it is to concentrate on our own pleasures— taking note of the plight of many in the world only as the news momentarily grabs our attention.
All: We confess our capacity to be so consumed by our own agenda that our concern for the needs of others shrinks all too rapidly.
One: We confess the ease with which we become conformed to the world’s standards rather than facing the challenge of conforming to those of Christ.
All: We confess our reluctance to love our enemies and to do good to those who dislike or even hate us. Stir up your Spirit in us, Lord, that we may be your disciples. (Silent Prayer)
Assurance of God’s Grace

First Scripture Lesson Romans 12:14-18 (p. 1034)
Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est. Congregavit nos in unum Christi amor. Exultemus, et in ipso iucundemur. Timeamus, et amemus Deum vivum. Et ex corde diligamus nos sincero.
Where charity and love are, God is there. Christ’s love has gathered us into one. Let us rejoice and be pleased in Him. Let us fear, and let us love the living God. And may we love each other with a sincere heart.
Text:
Second Scripture Lesson Luke 6:27-36 (p. 939)
Sermon Rev. Christopher A. Henry
No Enemies Here
“But I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you...” (Luke 6:27)
Moment of Silent Meditation
We Give Thanks to God
* Affirmation of Faith Rev. Karen L. Lang from the Iona Abbey Community
With the whole church, we affirm that we are made in God’s image, befriended by Christ, and empowered by the Spirit. With people everywhere, we affirm God’s goodness at the heart of humanity, planted more deeply than all that is wrong. With all creation, we celebrate the miracle and wonder of life, the unfolding purposes of God, forever at work in ourselves and the world. Amen.
Prayers of the People and the Lord’s Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
Invitation to Discipleship and Generosity
