WHAT EVERY PARENT NEEDS TO HAVE ON HAND

Let’s Play!

Summer camp is good for brain power, social skills and joy

Parents can feel some stress about making plans for summer For kids, though, summer is all about playing. The happy news for parents: Focusing on play is a great plan because play is also good for your child’s brain development, social skills, and health.

There’s a growing body of research on the role of play in social, emotional, and cognitive development. That includes recess, an important part of kids’ days, as well as other kinds of play, like the summer camp activities you might be planning. We’ve known that research supports the idea that recess helps children do better in school and manage stress. It’s a necessary break from cognitive tasks that allows kids time to play, imagine, move, and socialize.

Research also shows that engaging in play overall helps us perform better across many aspects of life, including problem-solving, collaboration, and creativity. Play is so fundamentally crucial to child development that the American Academy of Pediatrics has become a vocal advocate for play, including giving guidelines for pediatricians to recommend play to parents at well-care visits. I recommend this to parents and my kiddo patients at Kaiser Permanente all the time. That’s one of the joys of summer camp — dedicated, focused play time is often part of the plan.

I use the term “play” broadly here, because it’s related to what your child is engaged by and interested in — object play like building a robot at STEM camp is one child’s play, while the rough-and-tumble play of team

soccer is another’s.

Here are just some of the benefits of play:

• Play releases stress Getting out to play eases stress in the moment. It also helps kids learn to relieve stress going forward by developing self-regulation and stress management skills that come with play. Plus, I think we could all sometimes use a good Nerf dart scuffle to discharge tension.

• Social skills are boosted by play This is a big one for camp, where your kids meet new children and function in an atmosphere outside of the familiarity of home or school. At camp, they can build new social skills and learn to navigate different kinds of social situations through play.

• Play helps kids learn to manage everyday tasks Playing often involves problem-solving, memory, focus, and juggling multiple tasks — some of the “execu-

tive functions” that allow us to pursue goals and ignore distractions.

• Playing grows your brain Whether your child is at an outdoor camp, a theater camp, a sports camp, an art camp, or participating in STEM experiences, learning through play will support the development of their brain structure and function. All while they are having fun: win-win.

• Play is often a physical activity Exercise and activity are keys to lifelong health and well-being. Physical activity helps kids feel stronger, build muscle, and have more energy to do the things they enjoy.

• Mutual joy! Play is full of shared communication and what we call attunement, harmonious back-and-forth interactions. That’s important for parent and child, and for kids to spend time together to build relationships and

experience joy, which we all want for its own sake!

If children have had difficult experiences, such as a loss in the family, research shows that play is even more important. Play supports the formation of safe, stable, and nurturing relationships with caregivers, including teachers and camp counselors. Those stable relationships help any child thrive and get more out of their learning experiences. Encouraging your child to play nurtures their brain and social development, helping them express their natural curiosity and imagination. So, for a healthier family, keep play on the family agenda all year round!

Rite of Passage JourneyS

Coming-of-age Wilderness Adventures

Imagine sending your kid o to summer camp and having them come back resilient, self-assured, and much less dependent on their phone.

Rite of Passage Journeys is a unique Northwest program that o ers wilderness experiences from which kids return standing taller, excited to connect with others and possessing a strong sense of who they are, what they can accomplish, and their place in the world.

“It’s so transformative, I can’t even tell you,” says Jenny Macke, the organization’s recent executive director. “I physically see the di erence in the kid, every kid—the way they walk, the way they stand, their con dence.”

“It’s kind of a sophisticated version of the adage: know thyself,” adds Randy Morris, president emeritus of the Rite of Passage Board of Directors.

is transformation happens through a variety of coming-of-age outdoor programs in Olympic National Park for kids ages 10 to 18. Journeys range from a week to three weeks, and many are backpacking trips, while others take place mostly at a base camp.

ese programs mark key life transitions: from childhood to adolescence, or from the teen years to adulthood. (Rite of Passage Journeys also has programs for adults.)

Morris says they meet an instinctual hunger for a way to pause and honor the change, an initiation into the next phase of life. is rarely happens in our culture, and in the absence of a healthy way to mark such a moment, some young people turn instead to alcohol, drugs, or dangerous activities.

Rite of Passage Journeys sends them into

the wilderness with their peers and expert mentors to challenge themselves physically and emotionally.

Who should consider a Rite of Passage Journey? Macke says the programs are a good t for families who prioritize:

○ Building resilience and life skills in their kids.

○ Reducing dependence on technology or devices.

○ Connecting with nature. “So many parents have great memories of being in nature and having freedom, and they want their kids to have that too.”

“Nature is the teacher,” Morris says. “We forget that. We become alienated from the wisdom nature has to o er.”

He acknowledges that it can be tough for kids to be away from their phones, games, and social media, but that the nervous system actually calms down in their absence, and the body returns to a more normal rhythm not to mention that the mind is open to new sights and experiences.

One of Macke’s favorite stories is of a journey participant who recalled spending time on a beach in Olympic National Park one evening. e stars were above her, more stars than she’d ever seen in her life in the city. Below her in the water was the glow of bioluminescence. She had a sense of awe.

Not everyone who shows up for a journey is necessarily seeking that awe or excited to be there, Macke says. “ e normal response of an ego, especially a teenager’s ego, when they don’t know something, is to be like: I don’t want to do it.”

And the journeys aren’t easy. ere can be tough hiking, carrying a heavy pack, sleeping on the ground, and group sessions full of challenging self-re ection and relating to others. Despite initial reluctance, Macke believes that kids actually want to be challenged, and they

love learning that they can do hard things.

“ e whole intention of a rite of passage is to stretch yourself, to say to the part of yourself that doesn’t want to do it that I’m going to try and I’m going to learn and I’m going to grow and I’m going to evolve.”

And don’t believe for a minute that this is all misery. “Oh, these kids have so much fun,” Macke says, “partly because they aren’t worrying all the time about being criticized or bullied or teased for saying something crazy or zany or whatever. ere’s a culture that’s created around authenticity, vulnerability, truth telling, taking chances, and a lot of listening and kindness.”

e end result is what Morris describes as a sense of, “I did that! I didn’t know I could, but I did.” He says it means a lot to a young person to have others witness them exhibiting strength and courage. Lifelong friendships are created, too.

e journeys, by the way, are in small groups led by guides who are highly trained in both the emotional and outdoor aspects of the trips. In general, adolescent journeys for 12- to 15-year-olds are divided by gender; both older and younger groups are mixed gender, and there is also a program called Queer Kinnection for LGBTQIA++ youth ages 14 and up.

Rite of Passage Journeys for 2026 begin in late June and many still have space available. Find full details at riteofpassagejourneys.org.
