Sea History magazine Issue 183 (Summer 2023) is published by the National Maritime Historical Society and explores the art, history, science, and adventure of the sea through stories of ships and sailors, naval heritage, marine archaeology, maritime museums, and the people and events that have shaped our seafaring past.
This issue features the story of Enoch Train, the Boston merchant who became Donald McKay’s best customer, a look at the life and legacy of naval architect William Francis Gibbs and his quest to build the “perfect ship,” the SS United States, and new research revealing the mystery of the Great Lakes shipwreck Ironton in Lake Huron. The issue also includes a tribute to marine artist John Stobart, an examination of ship portraiture in maritime art, and regular departments covering historic ships, maritime museums, and naval history news.
