To allow for potential changes to our capacity limits, we will be selling tickets on a month-to-month basis beginning in April for May games, and continuing in May for June games, June for July games, and so on.

pod seating Seats have been laid out throughout the ballpark in pods of 2-8 seats. Each pod is located at least six feet from the next pod. Fans must buy the entire pod of seats.
mobile ticketing To help minimize touch points, all fans are encouraged to utilize our mobile ticketing or print at home options. Tickets will be sent directly to your phone, where fans can enter the ballpark through our touchless ticket scanners, which will allow guests to enter the stadium faster and safer. Countless Memories at Hadlock in 2020
The moment that everything shut down last March, the Sea Dogs immediately shifted gears from baseball to how they could help the community and what they could do to stay engaged with fans and create Hadlock memories, despite a lack of baseball. In addition to keeping the Sea Dogs full time staff intact and paying game day employees, below are just a few examples of the ways the Sea Dogs were able to contribute to the community and create memories for fans in 2020.
Slugger’s Homework Challenge In March and April, the Sea Dogs posted regular quizzes using baseball as a teaching tool to aid teachers and parents with at-home learning. Blood Drive Answering the call for a desperate need for blood, The Portland Sea Dogs joined Maine Health to sponsor a “Distance Saves Lives” Blood Drive in partnership with the American Red Cross. Thanks to everyone’s efforts, 107 pints of blood were collected.
I Miss Slugger T-Shirts “I Miss Slugger” t-shirts were created with all of the proceeds benefitting the United Way of Great Portland’s COVID Relief Fund. Through these one of kind t-shirt sales, we were able to raise $2,500.
Food Drive The Sea Dogs, Maine Red Claws, and Maine Mariners teamed-up to help with the need for food during the pandemic. The “Fans for Food” campaign raised over $6,000 for the Good Shepherd Food Bank to assist those in need.
Home Run for Wishes The Portland Sea Dogs partnered with Make-A-Wish Maine to host a virtual 5K to fundraise to help Make-A-Wish Maine grant wishes. The event was able to raise $17,390. “During a time when so many fundraising efforts have been impacted by the necessary COVID precautions, we are so grateful to the Portland Sea Dogs for hosting this virtual 5K to benefit Make-A-Wish Maine,” said Make-A-Wish Maine President and CEO Kate Vickery. “While many of our wishes are on hold due to travel restrictions, we are still safely granting impactful wishes to children throughout Maine at a time when they need it most. As a longstanding community partner, the Sea Dogs have always stood behind providing this hope to our wish kids and this is a wonderful opportunity that they are extending to others to do the same.” Virtual Sellout The Sea Dogs partnered with the Maine Children’s Cancer Program to attempt virtually selling out Hadlock Field to raise money for the Strike Out Cancer in Kids Program. Through generous donations and sponsorships, the Sea Dogs were able to raise over $20,000 for the Maine Children’s Cancer Program.

Hadlinks With no baseball, the Sea Dogs transformed Hadlock Field into the Hadlinks Golf Club, a nine-hole target style golf course. The course was an instant hit selling out within hours, resulting in the Sea Dogs opening the course for additional weekends and corporate outings. Hadlinks will return in 2021. Dates and details will be announced this summer…stay tuned.

Dining on the Diamond In July and August, the Sea Dogs opened up the ballpark for “Dining on the Diamond”. Fans were able to reserve a social distanced table and enjoy a ballpark style dinner right on the Hadlock Field diamond. Slugger stopped by each table for a photo and entertained the crowd with his YMCA performance and 7th inning stretch routine with Take Me Out to the Ballgame. Over the course of the summer, 2,044 people joined us for dinner. If you missed the opportunity to dine at the ballpark last year, it will be returning this season. Look for complete details this summer!
Undefeated T-Shirts When the Sea Dogs season was officially canceled in June it marked the first time in Sea Dogs history that the Sea Dogs didn’t lose a game… Undefeated 2020 Season T-Shirts became the best-selling item for the Sea Dogs in 2020.

Halloween at Hadlock With many towns cancelling trick-or-treating due to safety concerns, the Portland Sea Dogs stepped up to deliver a safe trick-or-treating experience for fans of all ages. As fans walked the warning track at Hadlock Field, prewrapped candy was delivered through PVC piping, to allow for proper social distancing, at various stops throughout the ballpark. Fans were also able to take socially distanced photos with various costumed characters including Old Port Batman and Batgirl.

HADLOCK FIELD
COVID-19 HEALTH & SAFETY PROTOCOLS Face Masks Required
In addition to Sea Dogs’ staff members, all attendees two years and older must wear a face mask at all times when at the ballpark, except when eating or drinking at their specific ticketed seats. Face masks must cover the mouth and nose. Fans who don’t comply will not be permitted at Hadlock Field.
Physical Distancing
Guests are required to practice physical distancing (6 feet apart) inside and outside of Hadlock Field including the concourse, souvenir store, restrooms, and front plaza.
Bag Restriction Policy
Fans are strongly encouraged to leave bags at home to reduce points of contact during the security screening process. The Sea Dogs will permit medical bags, manufactured diaper bags that accompany infants and young children, and 4.5” x 6.5” clutch purses for personal items. We ask that guests only bring necessary items and keep track of their personal belongings at all times.
The Buffer Zone
There will be a 12-foot buffer between the field and seats in areas where players commonly are (dugout, bullpen, on-deck circle) to help protect fans from players and vice versa.
Enhanced Cleaning Procedures
Enhanced daily cleaning procedures include frequent wipe downs of hightouch areas such as countertops, railings, doorknobs, and elevators, nightly disinfection of all interior areas, and frequent trash removal. Use of EPAcertified cleaning products with reduced dwell times. Restrooms cleaned multiple times throughout each game.

Hand Sanitizer
Hand sanitizer stations, presented by Maine Medical Center, will be available at various stations throughout the stadium including all entrances, concourses, and restrooms for staff and guest use. Staff and guests are encouraged to wash their hands and use hand sanitizer frequently.
Mobile Food Ordering
Mobile food ordering will be used exclusively for concessions at Hadlock Field in 2021 to avoid lines and to maintain social distancing. Order your food and beverages online and have them delivered directly to your seat. All orders are cashless and must be paid online with a credit or debit card.

Mainers have Major League Impact
As the state of Maine recently celebrated its bicentennial, we take a look at the impact that Mainers have had in Major League Baseball. 78 Maine born players have appeared in the Major Leagues. For a northern state with a short baseball season and a small population, Mainers have had a significant impact in Major League Baseball both on and off the field. Here is a look at 20 of them…
Jim Beattie
Beattie attended South Portland High School where he starred in baseball and basketball. The right-handed pitcher had a nine-year Major League career with the Yankees (1978-1979) and the Seattle Mariners (1980-1986). After his playing career, he served as the General Manager of the Montreal Expos from 1995 to 2001 and the Baltimore Orioles General Manager along with Mike Flanagan from 2003-to 2005. He most recently served as a scout with the Blue Jays, retiring in 2018.
Del Bissonette
Bissonette, a Winthrop native, played five years in the Major Leagues from 19281933, all with Brooklyn, and hit 66 home runs in 604 career games. On April 21, 1930, he became the first player in Major League history to hit a bases-loaded triple and a grand slam in the same game. In 1945 he managed the Boston Braves. Among the managerial and coaching positions that he held over the years, he served as manager of the Portland Pilots of the Class B New England League in 1947. Mike Bordick
Although Bordick was not born in Maine, he spent much of his childhood in Maine and attended Hampden Academy and the University of Maine. Bordick played 14 seasons in the Major Leagues with the Athletics (1990-1996), Orioles (1997-2000, 2001-2002), Mets (2000), and Blue Jays (2003), where he hit .260 in 1,720 games. He was selected to the American League All-Star team in 2000. Bordick set records for most consecutive error-less games (110) and chances (543) by a shortstop. He was inducted into the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame in 2005 and the Baltimore Orioles Hall of Fame in 2011. Bordick with the Aberdeen Ironbirds working as a roving instructor for the Orioles. Brian Butterfield
Butterfield, an Orono native, has 40 years of professional baseball experience. The second baseman spent five seasons as a minor league player from 1979-1983 in the Yankees and Padres system before getting into coaching. He has coached both at the minor league and major levels, coaching for the Yankees (1984-1995, 2001-2002), Diamondbacks (1998-2000), Blue Jays (2002-2012), served as the Red Sox third base coach from 2013-2017, and the Cubs (2018-2019). Bill Carrigan
Carrigan was a catcher and manager for the Boston Red Sox. He had a ten-year playing career from 1906 to 1916, spending the last four years as a player-manager. He led the Red Sox to back-to-back World Series Championships in 1915 and 1916, the only Red Sox manager to accomplish the feat in franchise history. As a player, he was the first American League catcher to be behind the plate for three no-hitters. He was inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2004. John Cumberland
The Westbrook native broke into the big leagues at the age of 21 with the New York Yankees. A left-handed pitcher who spent six years in the Major Leagues with the Yankees, Giants, Cardinals, and Angels, Cumberland produced a 15-16 record with a 3.52 ERA in 110 games from 1968-1974. In his coaching career, he served as the Boston Red Sox pitching coach from 1995-2001.
Ryan Flaherty
Ryan, a Portland native and graduate of Deering High School where he was the Gatorade High School Player of the Year for Maine, had an eight-year Major League career with the Orioles, Braves, and Indians appearing in 859 games. On October 10, 2012, Flaherty hit a home run in Game 3 of the 2012 American League Division Series, becoming the first Maine born player to hit a home run in the MLB postseason. After the 2019 season, Flaherty became an advance scout and development coach for the San Diego Padres. He is the son of legendary University of Southern Maine Coach Ed Flaherty. Flaherty appeared in three games at Hadlock Field in 2017 on a rehab assignment with the Bowie Baysox.
Dave Littlefield
Portland native, Dave Littlefield, is currently the Vice President of Player Development for the Detroit Tigers, an organization that he has been with since 2014. Before joining the Tigers, he spent seven seasons in the Cubs organization as a Special Assistant to the General Manager and Major League scout. Previously, he spent seven seasons as the General Manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 2002 the Pirates, under Littlefield’s leadership, were named the Topps Organization of the Year. He also served as the Marlins Assistant General Manager from 1999-2001, at the time the Sea Dogs were a Marlins affiliate.
Pete Ladd
Ladd was born in Portland and attended the University of Massachusetts and the University of Mississippi. The Red Sox drafted Ladd in the 25th round of the 1977 draft, but traded him to the Houston Astros in 1979 in a deal involving Bob Watson. Ladd pitched in parts of six major league seasons with the Houston Astros, Milwaukee Brewers, and the Seattle Mariners. The righty appeared in 205 games and notched a career-high 25 saves in 1983. Harry Lord
The Porter native attended Bates College, where he was a pitcher on the team. Lord made his major league debut with the Boston Americans in 1907, after stops in the minor leagues with Worcester (New England League) and Providence (Eastern League). In 1908, the Americans changed their name to the Red Sox, and Lord was on the roster, hitting .259 with 23 stolen bases in 145 games. Lord finished his career by playing four years with the Chicago White Sox (1910-14), before managing in the minors. During his post-baseball career, Lord was involved in several business ventures in Portland.
Stump Merrill
Stump has been a fixture in the Yankees system since 1978 when he became the manager for West Haven of the Eastern League. The Brunswick native earned the nickname “Stump” from his UMaine coach Jack Butterfield. Merrill began his baseball career as a catcher for the Maine Black Bears, where he also played football and earned a degree in physical education. The Philadelphia Phillies selected him in the 1966 free-agent draft. Stump took over as Yankees Manager in 1990 when Bucky Dent was fired, and managed the entire 1991 season.
Kevin Rand
Rand, a Cape Elizabeth native and graduate of Bowdoin College, is currently the Senior Director, Medical Services for the Detroit Tigers, a position he has held since November 2017. Before being promoted to his current role, he served as the Tigers Head Athletic Trainer since 2002. Rand has been in professional baseball for 39 years, 18 with the Tigers organization. Rand was the Head Athletic Trainer for the 2005 American League AllStar team. He was inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame in 2018. His father, Leroy, served as the Sea Dogs official scorer from 1994 to 2001.
Mark Rogers
The Harpswell native attended Mt. Ararat High School and pitched four years for the Eagles and had his number eight retired in 2012. The Milwaukee Brewers selected Rogers with the fifth overall pick in the 2004 draft, and he made his major league debut on September 10, 2010. Rogers went 3-1, 3.92 ERA in 11 games/9 starts during 2010 and 2012 with Milwaukee. Louis Sockalexis
Sockalexis often identified as the first person of Native American ancestry to play in the majors. The former outfielder grew up on the Penobscot Indian reservation near Old Town, and made his Major League debut with the Cleveland Spiders in 1897. Additionally, it is said that Sockalexis and his father entertained crowds at the Bangor Race Track by playing catch across the entire track. He attended High School in Van Buren’s St. Mary’s. Bob Stanley
Stanley was born in Portland but attended High School in New Jersey. He was nicknamed “The Steamer” and spent his entire 13-year career with the Boston Red Sox (1977-1989). Stanley is the Red Sox all-time leader in appearances with 637, relief wins, and is a member of the Red Sox Hall of Fame. His best season came in 1983 when he led the Sox with 33 saves and posted a 2.45 ERA. Stanley is the only player in major league history born in Maine to be named to an All-Star game. Throughout his 13-year career, Stanley was a two-time All-Star, twice Top 10 in Cy Young Voting, three times he led the Majors in relief innings, and set an American League record in relief innings with 168.1 in 1982. After his playing career, Stanley was a pitching coach from 1997-2018.

Clyde Sukefort
Sukefort was born in Washington, Maine, and is best known for signing Jackie Robinson, after Tom Greenwade scouted Robinson in the Negro leagues. He earned the nickname Sukey during his Major League career, where he played with the Cincinnati Reds (1926-31) and the Brooklyn Dodgers (1932-34, 45). His best year in the Major Leagues was 1929 when he hit.354 with 84 hits in 84 games. During his travels, he was a coach with the Pirates and Dodgers, and also worked as a special assignment scout. Bill Swift
Swift was born in Portland and attended South Portland High School and the University of Maine, and led the Black Bears to four straight College World Series Championships. The right-hander was a member of the 1984 Olympic team. Swift was the second overall pick by the Seattle Mariners in the 1985 draft and compiled a 94-78, 3.95 ERA with Seattle, San Francisco, and Colorado. On December 22, 1999, USA Today named Swift as one of Maine’s best athletes of the 20th century, and was inducted into the inaugural class of the New England Baseball Hall of Fame on January 25, 2015
Gary Thorne
Thorne is a Bangor native and attended the University of Maine and graduated from their law school in 1973. In 1977, Thorne called hockey games for Augusta radio and television stations and began doing play-by-play for the University of Maine’s hockey games for Bangor radio station WABI. As the voice of the Black Bears, he quickly became one of the most recognizable radio voices in the state. In 1984 he was the radio broadcaster for the Maine Guides and went on to his first Major League job with the New York Mets in 1985, spending four years as one of the radio voices. During his travels, Thorne has been a national voice for the NHL, called football, bowling, and worked as a voice talent for WWE. He most recently served as the TV voice of the Baltimore Orioles.
Carl Willey
Willey was a native of Cherryfield and spent eight years in the Major Leagues. In his rookie season in 1958, he posted a 2.70 ERA and led the National League in strikeouts, earning him the Sporting News Rookie of the Year. The Boston Braves signed Willey as a free agent in 1951. He pitched for the Milwaukee Braves and New York Mets, compiling 38 wins and a career 3.76 ERA. COREY WIMBERLY
SEA DOGS MANAGER
Wimberly is the 15th manager in team history and in his third season as a manager in the Red Sox organization. Wimberly went 37-38 in 2018 managing the Lowell Spinners, then led the Salem Red Sox to a 67-70 record and a Carolina League playoff berth in 2019. He first joined the Red Sox organization as a coach with the Greenville Drive in 2017. Wimberly was slated to return to manage Salem in 2020 before the season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

LANCE CARTER
PITCHING COACH
Originally slated to coach with the Sea Dogs in 2020, Carter begins his first season in Portland after spending the previous two years as the pitching coach with the Salem Red Sox (High-A). The 2021 season marks Carter’s sixth season in the Red Sox system. He was Lowell’s pitching coach from 2015-17. A right-handed pitcher, Carter was selected as a 2003 All-Star while with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. He pitched with Kansas City (1999), Tampa Bay (2002-05), and the Los Angeles Dodgers (2006) before spending the 2007 season with Nippon Professional Baseball’s Orix Buffaloes in Japan. Served as a Phillies minor league pitching coach from 2010-11.
LANCE ZAWADZKI
HITTING COACH
Zawadzki was also scheduled to be in Portland in 2020 before the season was cancelled. He will begin his first season as Portland’s hitting coach after spending the 2019 season with High-A Salem. Zawadski made his coaching debut with the Lowell Spinners (Short Season-A) in 2018. The Framingham, Massachusetts, native played 11 professional seasons as an infielder, reaching the majors with the Padres in 2010.
AKO THOMAS
COACH
Thomas begins his first season as a coach with Portland and his first season in the Red Sox organization. He most recently spent time on the University of Michigan’s staff as Volunteer Assistant Coach (2020) following a four-year playing career with the Wolverines (2016-19). He finished his career at Michigan batting .285 in 203 games.

ATHLETIC TRAINER
Gallon returns for his fifth season as Sea Dogs Head Athletic Trainer and his sixth in the Red Sox system. The Ashburnham, MA native earned a B.S. in Athletic Training from Springfield College and a M.S. in Exercise Science from the University of Massachusetts- Amherst.

STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING COACH
Dolan joins the Sea Dogs as Strength and Conditioning Coach after spending two years as the Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Phoenix Suns. Prior to the Suns, he worked as a minor league strength and conditioning coach in the New York Yankees organization, earning his league’s Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year awards for both 2016 and 2017.

Odor and the RubberDucks posted a first-half record of 34-35 and sent five players to the Eastern League All-Star Game. Odor has a 422-442 (.488) career managing record in 12 seasons. The 2021 season will be Odor’s 33rd in the Cleveland organization as a player or coach (20th season as a coach). Originally a 32nd-round draft pick by the Indians in 1988, the former shortstop played in the minor leagues for the Indians from 1988-94 and for the Milwaukee Brewers organization in 1995. He managed San Felipe in the Venezuelan Summer League for two seasons in 1999-2000, the Burlington Indians for four seasons from 2001-04, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers for two seasons in 2005-06, and the Gulf Coast League Indians for two seasons in 2007-08. Manager Miguel Perez (1st year) The 2021 season will be Perez’s fourth year as a manager in the minors. He owns a career record of 127-145, all with Pittsburgh Pirates-affiliated clubs. He spent the 2019 season as the manager for the Greensboro Grasshoppers. He led Greensboro to a 79-59 record and a third-place finish. Prior to the 2019 season, Perez spent both the 2017 and 2018 seasons as the manager for the Bristol Pirates in the Appalachian League. Perez’s coaching career started with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2014. His first job in coaching was in the South Atlantic League, coaching third base for the West Virginia Power, under former Curve manager Michael Ryan. As a player, Perez was originally signed by the Cincinnati Reds as a non-drafted free agent on November 15, 2000. He made his professional debut with the VSL Reds in 2001. Perez spent the majority of the 2005 season with Sarasota in the Florida State League, where he was named to the All-Star team. He was also named as the Reds minor league DefensivePlayer-of-the-Year that season. Perez made his major league debut on September 7, 2005 for the Reds against the Milwaukee Brewers, becoming the first player from Guatire, Miranda, Venezuela to make the major leagues. Bundy has over thirty years of professional baseball experience, including stints as the first base coach with the Arizona Diamondbacks and as the third base coach with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He also has 12 years of prior minor league managerial experience.

Mascot Rowdy the Pony @RowdythePony Rowdy, a fierce rumbling carousel horse, is ready to entertain fans at NYSEG Stadium in 2019. Prior to the 2018 season, the Binghamton Rumble Ponies introduced their new mascot to the Southern Tier without a name on Parade Day, the city’s annual celebration for St. Patrick’s Day. Rowdy was selected as the team’s inaugural mascot after 1,000 fan submissions, the team narrowed down their five finalists to Bing, Buster, Ross, Rowdy, and Rumbleton. The anticipation built following another fan vote. The new mascot was christened “Rowdy” at the Meet the Ponies dinner days before Opening Day.

The Portland Paramounts played in the Eastern League in 1917. The club was owned by Hiram Abrams, president of the Paramount Pictures organization. The Paramounts finished in sixth place in their only campaign. Portland was far removed from the rest of the members of the league, an issue given World War I travel restrictions. The franchise was transferred to Providence prior to the 1918 season.

Beyeler, a native of Moab UT, spent the 2019 season as the first base coach for the Baltimore Orioles. 2020 will mark the 29th professional season for Beyeler as a manager, coach or scout. Prior to his post with the Orioles, he managed the Miami Marlins Triple-A club for three seasons (2016-18). Beyeler last managed in the Eastern League with the Portland Sea Dogs (Boston Red Sox) from 2007-2010. He led the Sea Dogs to back-to-back playoff appearances in 2007-08. Beyeler was the Red Sox first base coach when the team won the World Series in 2013. Beyeler spent six seasons in the minor leagues with the Tigers from 1986-1991, reaching Triple-A Toledo. He remained in the Tigers organization following his playing career, assuming the role as an Area Scout from 1992-1996. Beyeler resides in Atlantic Beach, FL, and has two children (Jordan and Brady). He graduated from Wichita State University where he earned All-Conference honors in three seasons from 1984-86 and was named to the All-Region team in 1985. Mascot C. Wolf @CWolf_00 C. Wolf is a happy-go-lucky pirate wolf who has served as the Erie mascot since 1995. According to his bio, C. Wolf is the only talking mascot in the world and lives in Presque Isle in Lake Erie.

TRACK RECORD: Casas combined elite power in high school with a surprisingly mature approach that became evident against advanced competition in showcase events and playing for USA Baseball’s 18U National Team. The Red Sox drafted Casas 26th overall in 2018 and signed him for just over $2.5 million. After most of his 2018 pro debut was wiped out following a strained thumb ligament, his 2019 minor league season didn’t disappoint. He joined Xander Bogaerts as the only Red Sox teenagers in more than half a century to hit 20 or more homers in one year and ranked as the top infield prospect in the low Class A South Atlantic League. Casas was set to open 2020 in high Class A before the coronavirus pandemic wiped out the minor league season, and he joined the team’s alternate training site in late August. He arrived in tremendous shape and ready to hit against more experienced pitchers. SCOUTING REPORT: Casas already has the size and strength to launch moonshots from left-center to right field. He has some swing-and-miss to his game, like most big power hitters, but he’s shown the self-awareness and aptitude to cover holes. That trait was evident at the alternate site, where he showed an improved ability to turn on and backspin velocity on the inner half, while continuing to drive pitches away to the
opposite field. That all-fields approach is evidence of a player committed to being more than an all-or-nothing hitter. Casas, who considers Joey Votto a model, spreads out his stance and chokes up with two strikes. His strike-zone awareness ranks among the best in the system. While Casas was drafted as a third baseman, his future is at first base, where he has a chance to be at least an above-average defender given his wingspan and solid arm strength. Casas is uncommonly mature, showing both an interest in feedback while also having the self-understanding to filter what works for him. He has worked out with big leaguers in South Florida for years, something that helped him remain unfazed against older competition. THE FUTURE: Casas made a compelling case to open 2021 at Double-A with his performance at the alternate site. Some in the organization believe he is sufficiently advanced to fast track to the majors by the end of the season. Even if Casas travels a more conservative time frame, team officials believe he will become a middle-of-the-lineup staple for years to come. TRACK RECORD: The Reds traded Downs to the Dodgers before the 2019 season, and when the Red Sox pivoted away from Brusdar Graterol in the Mookie Betts blockbuster, Los Angeles shipped him to Boston prior to spring training in 2020. Downs made his Red Sox debut at the alternate training site and was one of the team’s top performers in Pawtucket. SCOUTING REPORT: Downs has an efficient swing with impressive whip, driving the ball from gap to gap for doubles and homers. His bat speed buys time for good pitch recognition, allowing him both to manage the strike zone and identify pitches to drive. Downs has crushed lefthanders while doing enough against righties to suggest a potential regular. While he’s mainly spent time at shortstop, his solid but unspectacular range suggests a future at second base. Downs features average speed that plays up with his excellent baseball IQ and strong feel for the game. THE FUTURE: Downs could open 2021 in Triple-A with a solid spring and will be part of Boston’s depth equation. With offense down at second base across the majors in recent years, Downs projects as an above-average regular at the position with a chance to be an all-star.
TRACK RECORD: Dalbec’s elite power made him first-round candidate in the 2016 draft, but his struggles as a junior caused him to slip to the fourth round. The Red Sox signed the two-way standout for $650,000. He made that slide look misguided in pro ball with a combined 59 home runs in 2018 and ’19. He continued that power display with eight home runs in 19 games in his big league debut. SCOUTING REPORT: Dalbec has massive all-fields power with enough strength and leverage to allow even some mis-hits to leave the yard to right field. He also has sizable holes for big league pitchers to exploit, both on elevated fastballs as well as breaking balls and offspeed pitches below the zone. The cerebral Dalbec posted a 42.4 percent strikeout rate in the big leagues but has shown the ability to adjust and lower his strikeout rate throughout his pro career. While Dalbec spent most of his time at first base in Boston, he continues to be somewhat stiff there and remains a work in progress. He is more natural at third base, where he is a solid defender and his arm plays as double-plus—but he’s blocked by Rafael Devers. THE FUTURE: Dalbec’s first exposure to the majors validated the impression he can become a valuable power hitter and corner infielder. He’ll open 2021 back in Boston.
TRACK RECORD: Signed for just $25,000 during the 2015-16 international signing period, Mata quickly emerged as one of the organization’s top pitching prospects. After reaching Double-A in 2019, he made his way to the alternate training site in 2020 and solidified his standing as the pitcher with the best pure stuff in Boston’s system. SCOUTING REPORT: Mata has a diverse arsenal of pitches anchored by a mid-to-high-90s two-seam fastball and a nasty slider that tunnels well off his two-seamer. His two-seamer and slider have the shape and power of plus offerings or better, eliciting bad contact and swings and misses. His four-seamer, changeup and curveball are inconsistent but create options to attack righties and lefties in different parts of the zone. Below-average control remains the focus of Mata’s development, but he has improved, dropping his walk rate from 7.3 per nine innings in 2018 to 3.6 per nine in 2019. To continue that progress, Mata adjusted his delivery at the alternate site in hopes that fewer moving parts will result in a more consistent attack. THE FUTURE: Mata’s combination of big stuff but below-average control suggests a No. 3 or 4 starter. He has a chance to put himself on the radar as a major league depth option in 2021.

TRACK RECORD: In college, Duran was a second baseman whose speed and offensive performance pointed to bottom-of-the-order or utility skills. Area scout Justin Horowitz believed Duran had more potential based on his bat life and strength and that he could unlock greater defensive impact in the outfield. In his first full season, Duran raced to Double-A Portland, then made offseason swing adjustments that led to eight home runs at the alternate training site. SCOUTING REPORT: Duran’s swing was originally calibrated to take advantage of his plus-plus speed with a flat bat path that resulted in grounders and liners to all fields. Duran has since lowered his hands in his stance, an alteration that allowed him to keep a clear path to turn on inside pitches. With more aggressive swings may come an uptick in strikeouts, but Duran’s plus-plus speed and ability to spray liners on two-strike counts should help sustain solid batting averages. Duran relies more on speed than route efficiency to track balls in the outfield but has shown enough improvement to convince the Red Sox that he has a future in center. His arm is below-average. THE FUTURE: Duran’s speed gives him an avenue to the majors. If his swing adjustments hold, he could become a dynamic power-speed threat.
TRACK RECORD: One of the top high school talents in the 2016 draft, Groome has pitched just 66 minor league innings due to injuries, including having Tommy John surgery that wiped out his 2018 season and most of 2019. The Red Sox sent him to their alternate training site in 2020 to get innings, and he held his own against more advanced hitters while offering a reminder of why he’d been so highly-regarded as an amateur. SCOUTING REPORT: Groome has the raw materials of a lefthanded starter, including a powerful build, a controlled, repeatable delivery and giant hands that allow him to manipulate the ball. He typically works at 92-94 mph with his four-seamer, and the deception in his delivery resulted in lots of whiffs on fastballs at the alternate site. The plus-plus curveball he featured pre-Tommy John has not come back, but still flashes above-average to plus. Groome emphasized his changeup while rehabbing, and the pitch projects as average. He’s also started experimenting with a slider, and could feature either that or a cutter as a fourth pitch. THE FUTURE: Groome possesses mid-rotation potential but still has a lot to prove, including whether he can stay healthy over a full season. He’ll likely open 2021 in high Class A.
TRACK RECORD: Jimenez signed for just $10,000 out of the Dominican Republic but quickly surpassed many players who signed for more. He began switch-hitting after signing with the Red Sox and was a standout in the college-heavy short-season New York-Penn League as an 18-year-old. The 2020 season, unfortunately, represented a lost year of development. SCOUTING REPORT: Jimenez represents one of the most intriguing talents in the Red Sox organization: a player with the athleticism, strength, hand-eye coordination and elite speed to perform well even while learning. He is still developing his swing path after a choppy approach to the ball resulted in a 64% percent groundball rate in 2019. Nonetheless, his sub-four seconds times to first base allow him to turn many of those grounders into hits, particularly from the left side. Jimenez is still learning to hit lefthanded but hit .374 against righties in 2019, and all three of his homers came while hitting lefthanded. His plus-plus speed and arm strength suggest impact potential both on the bases and in center or right field. THE FUTURE: The 2021 season should offer Jimenez his first exposure to full-season ball. There’s a lot of development left, but he has a ceiling rivaled by few in the system.

TRACK RECORD: When the Red Sox drafted Houck, they believed he had the athleticism and aptitude to add to his sinker/slider and emerge as a starter. In 2020, Houck made good on that belief as he refined his delivery and pitch mix over two months at the alternate training site and made a dazzling big league debut with one earned run over 17 innings while dominating three playoff teams. SCOUTING REPORT: Houck quieted his crossfire delivery at the alternate site to establish better direction to home plate. He also raised his low three-quarters arm slot a tick, establishing a better release point for his 90-93 mph sinker, 92-94 four-seamer and low-80s slider. After struggling for much of his career to handle lefthanded hitters, Houck shelved his changeup in favor a splitter, which he rarely used in the big leagues but shows potential as a viable third pitch. He demonstrated excellent poise in the majors and adapted well to whatever was working, alternately emphasizing his two- and four-seam fastballs while displaying a wipeout slider against which hitters were 0-for-15 with 10 strikeouts. THE FUTURE: Houck put himself in position to open 2021 in the big league rotation with his debut performance. The development of his splitter will likely determine his career path.
TRACK RECORD: The Red Sox stunned the industry when they drafted Yorke with the 17th overall pick last June, but the team had years of familiarity. Area scout Josh Labandeira believed Yorke’s ability to drive the ball to center and right-center at an early age harbored similarities to what he’d seen in the minors playing against David Wright. The Red Sox signed Yorke for a below-slot $2.7 million bonus and invited him to the alternate training site, where he reached base in seven of 10 plate appearances. SCOUTING REPORT: There is an ease about Yorke in the batter’s box, where his quickly accelerating bat allows him an extra beat to recognize pitches and make smart swing decisions. He barrels balls to the entire field, creating the potential for high batting averages and on-base percentages with high extra-base hits totals. Yorke added 15 pounds of muscle his senior season to add more power to his game, but he always projects to hit for average over power. While Yorke will move off his high school position of shortstop, the Red Sox believe he can stay in the middle of the diamond at second base. THE FUTURE: Yorke should open 2021 in low Class A. The Red Sox believe his advanced bat and uncommon maturity could allow him to jump on the fast track.
TRACK RECORD: Ward was largely overlooked as a swingman who worked chiefly out of the bullpen at Central Florida. The Red Sox thought he had the ability to emerge as at least a reliever and might be able to start, so they took a flier on him in the fifth round in 2018. Ward rewarded that decision with a standout 2019 season in which both his ERA (2.14) and strikeout rate (11.2 per nine innings) were among the best in the minors by any pitcher who threw at least 100 innings. He spent the canceled 2020 season working out on his own and developing a changeup. SCOUTING REPORT: Thanks to strength gains in pro ball, Ward’s sinker ticked up from a low-90s offering to a 93-96 mph pitch in 2019. Both that pitch and a cutter he developed in 2019 allow him to miss barrels and generate bad contact early in counts. Ward’s mid-80s slider is his putaway pitch. While those three pitches are his primary options, Ward is willing to employ additional pitches—including a four-seamer and changeup—to further unbalance opponents and to give him game-planning options. He has an easy delivery but struggles with walks at times. THE FUTURE: Ward likely will open 2021 in Double-A. He has back-of-the-rotation potential.

Manager Cesar Martin (1st year) After leading the Advanced-A Dunedin Blue Jays to a first-place finish (80-55) in 2019, Manager Cesar Martin makes the move to New Hampshire in 2021. Dunedin won division titles in the first and second half of last season, and led the Florida State League with a .339 on-base percentage, 165 stolen bases, 220 doubles and 4.5 runs per game. On the mound, the D-Jays ranked third in ERA (3.29), second in shutouts (19), and second in fewest walks allowed (369). Martin, 40, was voted 2019 Florida State League Manager of the Year for his work at the Advanced-A level. Following the 2019 season, Martin was named manager of the Scottsdale Scorpions in the prestigious Arizona Fall League, where he worked with Fisher Cats infielders Cullen Large, Logan Warmoth and Kevin Smith Like 2018 Fisher Cats manager and current Blue Jays major league coach John Schneider, Martin has steadily risen through the Blue Jays organization over the last few years. He managed the Class-A Lansing Lugnuts for two seasons, and earned a promotion to Dunedin after an 80-60 campaign in 2018. Mascot Fungo Fungo the Fisher Cat was born in the woodlands of New Hampshire and has been with the team since the beginning in 2004. He enjoys fishing on Lake Winnipesaukee, eating ballpark food, and spending time in Burlington, VT, listening to his favorite band Phish. Fungo’s favorite cousin, Slider, is originally from Dunedin, FL, but had to come to New Hampshire when he heard about how much fun Fungo was having. They’re joined by Ollie the Golden Retriever, Ram of War, Tooth Fairy and Molly the Molar, and “His Roliness” the Rah-Lee Llama.

Manager Shawn Williams (2nd year) Williams returns to Reading for his second season, after leading the club to a playoff berth in 2019. In 2018, the Threshers won the secondhalf title in the Florida State League North Division. Over the past two seasons, Williams led the Threshers to a 144-131 record. Prior to his time in Clearwater, Williams also managed in Lakewood (A) for two seasons (2015-2016). He joined the Phillies player developmental staff in 2014 as a manager for Williamsport (A). Williams spent the month of April as a fill-in bullpen catcher and also served as a player/coach for Williamsport in 2013. He spent four seasons in the Tampa Bay Rays minor league system as a utility player from 2007-2010. His father, Jimy Williams, managed the Houston Astros and Boston Red Sox, and was the Phillies bench coach for two years (2007-2008). He was named the American League Manager of the Year in 1999. Mascot Crazy Hot Dog Vendor @CrazyHotDogVndr The Fightin Phils have 5 mascots who together form their own band. The members include Screwball (Captain and drummer), Quack the Duck (lead singer), Blooper the Hound Dog (lead guitar), Change-Up the Turtle (bongos), and Bucky the Beaver (left-handed, upside-down bass). They play a set in the pavilion before each Reading home game. Manager Jose Alguacil (2nd year) Alguacil was the Flying Squirrels’ manager in 2015 and led the team to a 72-68 record, the third-best mark in the franchise’s history and its most recent season with a winning record. The 2020 season marks Alguacil’s 14th overall with the Giants organization. He spent the last three seasons as the Giants’ first base coach while also overseeing bunting instruction and assisting with infield defense and baserunning. As a player, Alguacil signed with the Giants as an infielder in 1993. He played nine professional seasons in the minors and independent leagues, spending time with the Giants and Chicago White Sox organizations. Following his playing career, Alguacil served as an instructor in the minors for the Montreal Expos from 2002-03. He began his managerial career in 2004 with the Vermont Expos, Montreal’s short-season Single-A affiliate in the New York-Penn League. He remained with the organization as it transitioned to becoming the Washington Nationals in 2005 as a minor league infield coordinator. Alguacil, a native of Caracas, Venezuela, joined the Giants as a roving infield instructor in 2007 and held that role for eight years prior to being appointed as Richmond’s manager in 2015. He managed the Triple-A Sacramento River Cats in 2016 before being named to the major league staff the following year. Mascot Nutzy the Flying Squirrel Nutzy is one of the most recognizable figures in the Richmond community, making hundreds of appearances throughout the city during the year. He of course continues to be a fixture at The Diamond, but is also a regular at area schools, charitable functions and anywhere else there is a need for a superhero! On April 14 2016, Nutasha took the field for the first time, joining Nutzy in the Opening Day festivities. Nutahsa’s name was selected by the fans after thousands of votes submitted through the Richmond TimesDispatch. Nutzy and his pal Nutasha enjoy helping fans have the best possible experience in and outside of The Diamond. From their 71 home games to over 400 community appearances each year, the Flying Squirrels mascots are friendly, outgoing and lots of FUNN! Manager Julio Mosquera (1st year) Julio Mosquera enters his first season as manager for Somerset and his 16th overall in the Yankees organization. He becomes just the third person in Patriots history to serve in the position, following Sparky Lyle (1998-2012) and Brett Jodie (2013-2020). Mosquera managed the Single-A Charleston Riverdogs in 2018 and 2019, where he most recently guided the team to a 73-66 record. His prior managing service came with Single-A Staten Island, where he led the short-season club to a 46-29 record in 2017 and first place finish in the NYPL McNamara Division. He made his managing debut in 2015 with the GCL Yankees 1 and followed it up in 2016 with the GCL Yankees West. Mosquera served as the catching coordinator for his first nine seasons (2006-’14) in the Yankees organization The Panama native enjoyed a 15-year playing career as a catcher with the then-Tampa Bay Devil Rays (1999), Yankees (2000-2001), Texas Rangers (2002, 2004), Seattle Mariners (2003), and Milwaukee Brewers (2005). He made his MLB debut on August 17, 1996 and appeared in 12 games with the Blue Jays and Brewers across three seasons (1996-97, 2005). @PatriotsSparkee Mascot Sparkee One of the Somerset Patriots’ official mascots is a dog named Sparkee. He wears the team’s home uniform with white sneakers. The mascot debuted in 1998, at the Atlantic League’s first All-Star Game at Bernie Robbins Stadium in Atlantic City. Sparkee’s name refers to the Patriots first manager, Sparky Lyle. The team also employs another character, a cat named Slider. After training with Sparkee for several months, he debuted in the 2007 season. Slider wears the Patriots’ navy blue alternate jersey with gray pants. The team also has a live mascot known as “General Admission” who wears the traditional uniform donned by those fighting for the colonies during the American Revolution complete with the three cornered hat and musket. MLB Announces experimental playing rules to be tested during 2021 minor league season
M
ajor League Baseball (MLB) will be testing of a variety of experimental playing rules at various levels of the Minor Leagues during the 2021 season. These experimental playing rules have been approved by the Competition Committee and the Playing Rules Committee. MLB will closely monitor and analyze the impact of each rule change throughout the 2021 season and report to Clubs on their effects for further analysis. Consistent with the preferences of fans, the rule changes being tested are designed to increase action on the basepaths, create more balls in play, improve the pace and length of games, and reduce player injuries Below is a summary of the experimental rules that will be tested during the 2021 Minor League season, which will vary by level of play:
DOUBLE-A: (DEFENSIVE POSITIONING)
TRIPLE-A: (LARGER BASES)
The defensive team must have a minimum of four players on the infield, each of whom must have both feet completely in front of the outer boundary of the infield dirt.
To reduce player injuries and collisions, the size of first, second and third base will be increased from 15 inches square to 18 inches square. The Competition Committee also expects the shorter distances between bases created by increased size to have a modest impact on the success rate of stolen base attempts and the frequency with which a batter-runner reaches base on groundballs and bunt attempts.
Depending on the preliminary results of this experimental rule change, MLB may require two infielders to be positioned entirely on each side of second base in the second half of the Double-A season. These restrictions on defensive positioning are intended to increase the batting average on balls in play.
HIGH-A: (“STEP OFF” RULE) Pitchers are required to disengage the rubber prior to throwing to any base, with the penalty of a balk in the event the pitcher fails to comply. MLB implemented a similar rule in the second half of the Atlantic League season in 2019, which resulted in a significant increase in stolen base attempts and an improved success rate after adoption of the rule.
LOW-A: ALL LOW-A LEAGUES: (PICKOFF LIMITATION)

Pitchers will be limited to a total of two “step offs” or “pickoffs” per plate appearance while there is at least one runner on base. A pitcher may attempt a third step off or pickoff in the same plate appearance; however, if the runner safely returns to the occupied base, the result is a balk. Depending on the preliminary results of this experimental rule change, MLB will consider reducing the limitation to a single “step off” or “pickoff” per plate appearance with at least one runner on base.

MLB Experimental Rules
LOW-A SOUTHEAST: (ABS) In addition to the limitations on step offs/pickoffs, MLB will expand testing of the Automatic Ball-Strike System (“ABS”) that began in the Atlantic League and Arizona Fall League to select Low-A Southeast games to assist home plate umpires with calling balls and strikes, ensure a consistent strike zone is called, and determine the optimal strike zone for the system.
LOW-A WEST: (PITCH TIMER) In addition to the limitations on step offs/pickoffs, following successful pace of game rules testing among Florida State League teams in 2019, on-field timers (one in the outfield, two behind home plate between the dugouts) will be implemented to enforce time limits between delivery of pitches, inning breaks and pitching changes. The on-field timer used in Low-A West will include new regulations beyond the system currently used in Triple-A and Double-A to reduce game length and improve the pace of play.

We look forward to testing these rules in the Minor Leagues.” “The game on the field is constantly evolving, and MLB must be thoughtful and intentional about progressing toward the very best version of baseball – a version that is true to its essence and has enough consistent action and athleticism on display to entertain fans of all ages,” said Theo Epstein, Consultant to MLB. “These rules experiments will provide valuable insight into various ways to create a playing environment that encourages the most entertaining version of the game. What we learn in the Minor Leagues this year will be essential in helping all parties chart the right path forward for baseball.” MLB also continues its three-year partnership agreement with the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball (ALPB), which was announced in 2019. This partnership agreement allows MLB to test and adjust experimental playing rules and changes to equipment each season.
