There’s something unmistakable about the arrival of summer on Seabrook Island. The beaches are buzzing again, pool days have officially returned, dinner reservations are filling up, and familiar faces are making their way back to the Club for another unforgettable season on the Island. Everywhere you look, Seabrook is flourishing, and so is the energy that comes with this time of year.

June always feels like the unofficial beginning of everything we wait for all year long on Seabrook Island. School is out, calendars quickly fill with family visits and weekend gatherings, and the Club settles into the unmistakable rhythm of summer. Mornings begin with pickleball and tennis matches at the Racquet Club under the warm coastal sun, horseback rides along the beach, and quiet moments watching anglers cast lines along the shoreline. Afternoons bring time spent at the pools and beach, while evenings are filled with waterfront dinners at Pelican’s Nest where dolphins can often be seen breaching just beyond the waves. Across the golf courses, Members enjoy rounds surrounded by the natural beauty that defines Seabrook Island, from sunning alligators along the lagoons to sweeping marsh views glowing in the late-day light. After months of anticipation, the season is officially in full swing, and every corner of the Club feels alive with activity, laughter, and the excitement of another unforgettable summer ahead.

And this summer, there is certainly plenty to celebrate. As preparations continue for our island-wide Independence Day festivities and America’s 250th anniversary celebration, the Club is also proudly commemorating its 35th Anniversary this month. For more than three decades, Seabrook Island Club has served as the backdrop for countless memories, friendships, and traditions, and this season feels like the perfect opportunity to reflect on just how special this community truly is and all that lies ahead for the future of the Club.

Dear Members,

June is one of those months that carries a special energy here on Seabrook Island. The days grow longer, the Lowcountry warmth settles in, and our island community comes alive in ways that make this place truly extraordinary. As we welcome the official start of summer on Sunday, June 21, I find myself genuinely excited for everything this month has in store for our members and their families.

I would like to begin by extending a personal invitation to our Open Member Meeting on Tuesday, June 16 at 3:30 PM in the Atlantic Ballroom. The Board of Governors and Club leadership are looking forward to sharing an exciting update regarding the Club’s master plan, an important milestone that reflects careful planning and a forward-looking vision for our community. I encourage all members to attend, as your perspective and engagement are invaluable as we shape what lies ahead together. We’ll also be hosting a special Tuesday Happy Hour following the meeting in the Bohicket Lounge.

For our younger members, I am especially pleased to highlight Rally & Ride, our Racquet and Equestrian camp that combines two of the Club’s signature outdoor pursuits into one exciting experience. Another great Seabrook Camp experience is Racquets & Clubs Camp, which pairs tennis and golf instruction for a well-rounded introduction to the sports our community loves most. For those looking to develop their game on the course, our Summer Junior Golf Weekly Coaching Sessions offer focused instruction in a fun and encouraging environment. We hope to see the next generation of Seabrook Island members out on the courts, trails, and fairways this summer.

Sunday, June 21 also brings Father’s Day, and we look forward to celebrating the special men in your lives with à la carte brunch at the Island House. Our team has also curated a wonderful Father’s Day merchandise spotlight, a perfect opportunity to find a meaningful gift for the dad who means so much to your family.

As we move through June, we are also mindful of a truly meaningful moment approaching on the calendar Sunday, June 28 marks the 35th Anniversary of Seabrook Island Club, a remarkable testament to the enduring strength of this community and the generations of Members, families, and dedicated staff who have shaped this place over the decades. It is a milestone worth pausing to appreciate, and one we look forward to celebrating in conjunction with the 250th anniversary of our country at the Club’s July 3rd event.

Speaking of which, I hope you will mark your calendars for our July 3rd Celebration, which promises to be a truly festive and memorable evening More details are coming soon, and I am confident it will be a highlight of the summer season

MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD OF GOVERNORS

As we welcome summer to Seabrook Island, there is a tremendous sense of excitement across the Club From busy days at the Beach Club and on the golf courses to evenings spent with family and friends around the Island, it is wonderful to see our community come alive for the season ahead.

The Board of Governors remains committed to working closely with both our Members and staff to ensure this summer continues moving in a positive direction. We are especially excited about the talented new team members who have joined the Club, as well as the many deserving staff members who have recently stepped into new leadership roles. Their dedication and enthusiasm are helping elevate the member experience across every area of the Club.

This month also marks a special milestone as we celebrate the 35th Anniversary of Seabrook Island Club. It is an opportunity to reflect on the strong community that has been built here over the years and to look ahead to an exciting future for the Club

Another major focus for the Board this summer is the continued advancement of the Seabrook Island Club Master Plan. The Club initiated this stage of our long-range planning in 2023 with an in-depth survey on Member expectations and aspirations for the Club, as well as extensive research with our consulting partners. That work evolved into a collaborative effort with SIPOA and the Town that produced an island-wide Master Plan for the community. As the Club now moves forward with the initial delivery phase of the Master Plan, we remain committed to keeping the investment project choices Member-driven, drawing from focus groups, open houses, our Member committees, and ongoing discussions. The Board has shaped the investment roadmap with a guiding principle to balance the needed modernizations, with preserving the character, culture, and experience that make Seabrook Island Club so special to you.

At the same time, the Golf and Greens Committee has continued advancing the Golf Course Master Plan, including the renovation of the 30-year-old Crooked Oaks course and the Golf Performance Development Center that was previously deferred in 2025.

The Board of Governors has reviewed these projects, associated cost estimates, and the longterm benefits they will bring to the Membership as we prepare for an initial phase of improvements planned for 2026 and 2027. The General Manager and Board will conduct regular project reviews to measure progress and course correct as needed because of unforeseen internal or external forces.

As we move into the next phase of planning, we strongly encourage Members to attend the Open Member Meeting on June 16 at 3:30 PM. During this meeting, the Board and Club leadership will share updates on proposed projects, timelines, financial considerations, and the long-term investment roadmap for the Club. Most importantly, this meeting is an opportunity for Members to continue participating in the conversations that help shape the future of our Club together.

Congratulations to Seabrook Island Club Golf team member Warren Peper, who was voted Best Charlestonian (who isn’t Bill Murray or Darius Rucker) in this year ’ s Charleston City Paper Best of Charleston 2026 issue.

Each year, Charleston City Paper invites readers to recognize standout local businesses, community leaders, and personalities across the Lowcountry, and this year ’ s contest included more than 450 local winners and more than 500,000 votes cast.

Warren’s recognition is a meaningful honor and a reflection of the warmth, humor, and community spirit he brings not only to Charleston, but also to Seabrook Island Club. We are proud to celebrate Warren as part of our golf team and grateful for the personality and energy he shares with Members, guests, and fellow staff each day.

INSIDE THE GRASS

June 2026

June marks one of the most important times of the year for the long-term health and playability of Crooked Oaks. While aeration can create short-term disruption, the work performed over these few weeks is essential to maintaining healthy turf and quality playing conditions throughout the year.

Beginning June 8 and continuing through June 19, the agronomy team will complete our annual aeration program on Crooked Oaks. This process is one of the most important maintenance practices we perform each season, helping improve soil health, water movement, root development, and overall turf performance.

Greens Aeration

Our greens aeration process is extensive and designed to provide long-term benefits to turf health. To complete this work, we bring in a contractor utilizing four Drill and Fill machines equipped with 5/8-inch drill bits. These machines drill holes up to 12 inches deep into the greens, removing soil and replacing it with coarse, dried sand.

The process is repeated across the greens, ultimately replacing approximately 15% of the soil profile. While that percentage may sound modest, it is considered an aggressive and highly effective aeration program within the golf industry. This approach allows us to improve drainage and move excess sodium away from the root zone more efficiently throughout the year. Because our irrigation water contains elevated sodium levels, creating these deeper channels is critical to maintaining healthy greens during the summer months.

Once aeration is complete, the staff drags the sand into the surface and thoroughly cleans the greens to help promote a quicker recovery. Our goal is to complete the work within a few days so the greens have time to heal prior to reopening for play on June 19. This recovery period helps restore smoothness, firmness, and consistent ball roll as conditions continue to improve.

Fairways, Tees, & Roughs

The remainder of the course will undergo more traditional core aeration practices. Fairways and roughs are aerated using our large fairway aerator, while tees, approaches, and collars are completed using smaller equipment.

These aeration holes typically reach depths of 4–6 inches. Afterward, the cores are broken up using drag mats, and excess organic material is removed from the surface. This process helps relieve compaction, improve air and water movement, and encourage stronger turf growth throughout the season.

Bunker and Tree Maintenance

Following aeration, the staff will shift focus to bunker maintenance and tree pruning throughout the course.

Bunkers will be evaluated for proper sand depth, with sand added or redistributed where needed. Throughout the year, sand naturally shifts due to golf traffic, rainfall, and wind, particularly during storms and heavy weather events. Our goal is to maintain approximately five inches of sand in bunker bases and three to four inches on bunker faces. We also compact and roll bunker faces to help minimize plugged lies and improve consistency for golfers.

Tree pruning will focus primarily on reducing shade around greens and tees while improving airflow and overall turf health. Select oak trees will be trimmed to improve playability and sightlines for approach shots, while palm trees throughout the property will also receive seasonal pruning.

Looking Ahead

These few weeks of maintenance are critical to the long-term success of our golf courses. Healthy soil conditions are the foundation of healthy turf, and that directly impacts the quality and consistency of the playing experience throughout the year.

Summer is in full swing on the courts where the sounds of friendly rallies, competitive match play, and post-game laughter are once again filling the air. June is a season made for racquet sports, with bright mornings, active clinics, and social events bringing members of all ages together to enjoy tennis and pickleball in the heart of the island’s vibrant community. In this issue, we ’ re highlighting the spirited atmosphere that defines summer play, celebrating fathers and families enjoying time together on the courts, and previewing the exciting events and programming that will carry us into the holiday festivities of early July. Whether you ’ re chasing your next personal best or simply soaking in the joy of an evening match with friends, summer on Seabrook Island is always better with a racquet (or paddle) in hand.

2026 JUNIOR SUMMER CAMPS

Seabrook Island Club is excited to offer two one-of-a-kind programs combining Seabrook Island’s premier amenities into unforgettable summer camp experiences designed for all skill levels. Registration is open now for both of these 2026 Summer Camp sessions.

Rally & Ride (Ages 8-14): Combining racquet sports and horseback riding, young campers will split their day between the Racquet Club and the Equestrian Center, enjoying tennis, pickleball, horseback riding, and horsemanship activities in a fun and professionally supervised environment.

A 2026 TENNIS MEMBER-MEMBER TO REMEMBER

The Racquet Club proudly concluded another successful edition of the annual Member-Member Tennis Tournament, bringing together Members for several days of outstanding competition, camaraderie, and community engagement

This year ’ s tournament featured a Round Robin format leading into highly competitive semifinal and championship matches across multiple divisions. Throughout the event, members demonstrated exceptional sportsmanship, flexibility, and enthusiasm both on and off the courts, contributing to another memorable tournament experience at Seabrook Island Club.

Finals Day delivered exciting matches across all divisions and was highlighted by an outstanding atmosphere around the Racquet Club. Members who were not participating in the tournament also came out to support friends, enjoy the tennis, and be part of the event, creating a vibrant and energetic environment throughout the day.

Despite an uncertain weather forecast leading into Finals Da for play to continue as scheduled, something the Racquet C grateful for.

There’s something timeless about summer mornings at the Equestrian Center the quiet beauty of the trails, the gentle ocean breeze, and the connection between horse and rider that feels unique to the island itself. As June welcomes the start of another unforgettable summer season, the Equestrian Center continues to offer members and visitors opportunities to experience the island from an entirely different perspectiveeven in the heat of the summer.

HORSE OF THE MONTH

Meet our Horse of the Month: 16 year old, Token, owned by Jill and Tom Meyer. Token is a Smooth Coat Bashkir Curly which is a rare, hardy horse breed known for its hypoallergenic qualities. Jill purchased Token in April of 2016 while living in Virginia. Her son is allergic to horses which prompted her discovery of the Bashkir Curly breed. Jill fell in love with Token’s beauty and eye-catching appearance as a Tobiano Paint horse. Tobiano Paints are distinguished by their specific dominant white spotting coat pattern.

Token was born on June 10, 2009 in South Dakota. Jill was captivated by her beauty and sweetness and fell in love with her super soft velvety coat which feels like rabbit fur. Once Token was living on their property in Virginia, Jill also began to notice Token’s bravery and inquisitiveness. Instead of being wary of loud noises, Token routinely liked to stand right next to Tom at his shoulder while he worked with power tools at the barn. Token loves people and just always wants to be with someone.

Tom and Jill moved to Seabrook in August of 2024. They live near the Equestrian Center and Jill is able to see Token grazing out in the field from her window. Token loves her life at Seabrook. A typical day for Token includes enjoying turn out time overnight from 7pm –7am. Once she is brought into her stall, she takes a nap until Jill arrives at the Equestrian Center around 10 AM. Sometimes Jill has to wake Token up from her slumber. Afterwards, Token enjoys a good grooming and ride with Jill followed by treats and a bath. Token loves carrots, apples, bananas and anything with molasses. An avid baker, Jill is known for her popular homemade horse treats which are Token’s absolute favorite.

A fond memory together at Seabrook is when Jill helped Token overcome her fear of water. Token would never go near water in Virginia – she was afraid of the many creeks in the area and steered clear of any water. One day not long after they arrived at Seabrook, Jill and Token were taking a lesson with Equestrian Director, Charles Hairfield. Recent rains had caused large puddles to develop in the ring and Jill and Token were steering clear of the water. Charles helped guide the pair through a large puddle of water. It was an incredibly memorable experience as Token not only conquered her fear of water, but developed an affinity for splashing through the puddles. Now she absolutely loves water and her life at Seabrook.

This month, we ’ re especially looking forward to commemorating the 35th Anniversary of Seabrook Island Club on June 28, a milestone that honors decades of unforgettable experiences, cherished friendships, and a shared commitment to island life at its very best. We’re also giving readers a first look at our upcoming Independence Day Celebration festivities, where patriotic spirit, coastal charm, and community celebration will once again take center stage across Seabrook Island.

Summer on Seabrook Island always brings something special, but few traditions capture the spirit of the season quite like Independence Day at the Club. This year, Members can look forward to an especially festive week filled with patriotic energy, family fun, and opportunities to gather across the Island in celebration of the holiday. This year ’ s celebration also carries special meaning as we recognize Seabrook Island Club’s 35th Anniversary alongside America’s 250th Anniversary.

The Club is preparing a full week of Independence Day programming, with activities planned all across the Club, including Racquet, Equestrian, Golf, and the Beach Club. The week will build toward the annual celebration on Friday, July 3 , bringing Members and families together for an evening of food, drinks, entertainment, and classic Seabrook Island summer fun.

As Independence Day approaches, the Club will continue sharing the most current information through our live Independence Day Celebration Bulletin. This bulletin will serve as the go-to source for up-to-date details, including event schedules, ticket information, maps, dining updates, activity announcements and other important celebration notes. We will make an announcement as more details become available, so Members are encouraged to check the bulletin often as the holiday week draws near.

On Sunday, June 28, 2026, Seabrook Island Club proudly celebrates its 35th Anniversary an occasion that invites us to look back with gratitude on the vision, courage, and determination that helped shape the Club and community we know today.

The anniversary is marked from June 28, 1991, the date the transaction between Seabrook Island Associates and Bank South closed in escrow, allowing Club Members to purchase the assets of the former Seabrook Island Ocean Club out of bankruptcy. While the Club officially assumed control of the purchased assets shortly thereafter, June 28 stands as the pivotal moment when the future of Seabrook Island Club was placed into the hands of its Members. On March 18, 1991, Seabrook Island Associates and Bank South reached an agreement for the purchase of the former Seabrook Island Ocean Club assets for $9.5 million. On April 22, 1991, “The Club at Seabrook Island, Inc.” was incorporated. The first meeting of the Club’s Board of Governors followed on April 29. Then, on June 28, 1991, the newly constituted Board formally approved the purchase, and the transaction closed in escrow. A few weeks later, on July 12, the Club officially took charge of the assets. The Club’s publication at the time announced the moment with fitting excitement: “THE DEAL IS DONE! THE ASSETS ARE OURS.”

That moment changed everything. What had once been controlled by outside developers and operators was now Member-owned and Member-guided. The purchase secured the future of the golf courses, tennis facilities, Beach Club, Island House, Equestrian Center, pools, and other amenities that remain central to life on Seabrook Island today. It also affirmed a principle that continues to guide the Club 35 years later: Seabrook Island Club belongs to its Members, and its future is shaped by the people who care deeply about this community.

The early years following the purchase were marked by hard work and investment. The Club addressed needed repairs and improvements across its facilities, including work on the golf courses, tennis courts, Island House, Beach Club, pool areas, and Equestrian Center. These efforts helped restore confidence, rebuild momentum, and create the foundation for the Club’s continued evolution.

We honor the volunteers and leaders who gave their time and expertise during a critical moment in the Island’s history. We honor the Charter Members and Founding Members who stepped forward when their commitment mattered most. And we honor the generations of Members, staff, and community leaders who have continued to build on that legacy.

Thirty-five years later, Seabrook Island Club remains what those early leaders hoped it would become: a vibrant, Member-centered Club rooted in community, natural beauty, and a shared love of island life. As we look ahead to the next chapter, we do so with gratitude for the people who made this anniversary possible and with excitement for all that is still to come.
