“April showers bring May flowers,” and here on Seabrook Island, we are beginning to see that sentiment come to life all around us.

May arrives with a noticeable shift in rhythm across the Club. The Island feels fuller, the days stretch a little longer, and familiar routines begin to take on new energy. Members are returning, guests are arriving, and each space from the courts to the shoreline starts to reflect the liveliness of the season.

That momentum is matched by the efforts of our team, who continue to deliver a high level of service even as the pace picks up. Their ability to balance consistency with the demands of a busy season is what allows the Club to operate so seamlessly. This issue offers a glimpse into the many ways their work supports the experiences we all enjoy.

We’re also pleased to see that our new General Manager, Brendan P. Clark, is settling well into his role here on the island. His early contributions have been thoughtful and steady, and we look forward to the direction ahead. At the same time, we ’ re happy to welcome Anna Z. Ridge back to the team following her maternity leave. It was a meaningful time of growth for her and her family, and we are so happy to have her return as we head into the heart of the season.

There’s a natural progression to this time of year one that moves from preparation to participation. What was planted earlier in the year is now in full bloom, both across the Club and within our community.

Dear Members,

As I reflect on my first month as General Manager of Seabrook Island Club, I want to extend my sincere thanks to all who attended the recent “Meet the General Manager” coffee events. It was truly a pleasure to connect with so many of you in a relaxed and welcoming setting. I greatly appreciate the time you took to share your thoughts, experiences, and aspirations for the Club. The feedback has been both thoughtful and constructive, offering valuable insight that will help guide our priorities and decision-making in the months ahead.

I’m pleased to say that my first month has been an incredibly rewarding experience. From day one, I have been met with genuine warmth and hospitality from both our Members and our staff. It is immediately evident that Seabrook Island Club is a community built on strong relationships, pride, and a shared commitment to excellence. I am energized by the opportunity to collaborate with our Members, committees, Board of Governors, and talented team as we continue to build on this strong foundation and elevate the overall Club experience.

As we move into May, I’d like to highlight a few special events happening around the Island. On May 14th, we will host the Employee Assistance Fund’s Bootleggers Bash, an evening that promises great fun while supporting a meaningful cause. The Employee Assistance Fund plays an important role in providing support to our staff during times of unexpected hardship, and this event is a key way we come together as a community to give back to those who serve the Club so well.

We also look forward to celebrating Mother’s Day with an à la carte brunch at the Island House on Sunday May 10th. This is a wonderful opportunity to gather with family and friends in celebration of the special women in our lives. Our team is preparing a thoughtful and enjoyable dining experience, and we hope you will join us in making the day both festive and memorable.

Looking ahead, I would also like to invite you to attend our Open Member Meeting on June 16th. During this meeting, we will share an exciting update regarding the Club’s Master Plan, an important milestone that reflects careful planning and a forward-looking vision for our community. We look forward to sharing more details and engaging with you as we continue shaping the future of Seabrook Island Club together.

MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD OF GOVERNORS

As May begins, I’m pleased to share that your Club is off to a tremendous start this year. Across the board operationally, in service quality, and financially we are seeing strong performance that reflects both careful planning and the dedication of our team. It’s an encouraging foundation as we head into our busiest season.

Our committees are already off and running and I’d like to extend a sincere thank you to the many Members who have volunteered their time and expertise. Your partnership with Brendan and his leadership team is invaluable as we continue to identify opportunities to enhance the Club. I also want to recognize those who contribute feedback and support outside of formal committees your involvement plays an important role in our success.

Our recent annual Easter celebration was a great reminder that the season is underway. Activity across the Club is building, with Members and guests returning to favorite gathering spots like the Beach Club and Pelican’s Nest. With a strong team in place, we are well prepared for the increased pace and energy that define this time of year.

I am also looking forward to our upcoming Open Member Meeting on June 16, where we will share an overview of the projects planned over the next five to seven years, along with how these initiatives will be funded. We encourage all Members to attend and be part of the conversation.

RACQUET CLUB RECEIVES ITF TOURNAMENT RECOGNITION AWARD

We are proud to share that the Seabrook Island Racquet Club has been recognized by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) with a Tournament Recognition Award for our MT400 Charleston (M&W 30–80) event.

This distinction is awarded to tournaments that achieve exceptional player satisfaction and excellence in tournament delivery, placing our event among the topperforming competitions worldwide within the ITF World Tennis Masters Tour.

Hosted as part of the tournament now known as the Fleming Open formerly the long-standing Alan Fleming Tournament this event continues to showcase the very best of Seabrook Island. Each year, the tournament attracts more than 300 players from over 25 states, along with international competitors, creating a highly competitive and engaging field.

Beyond the competition, what truly sets this tournament apart is the experience. Players are welcomed with the signature hospitality of Seabrook Island, enjoying not only toptier tennis on our Har-Tru clay courts, but also the natural beauty and amenities that make our Club so special.

This recognition is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff, tournament team, and volunteers, as well as the continued support from our Members. It reflects the outstanding atmosphere and experience we strive to provide for every player who visits the Racquet Club.

EQUESTRIAN CENTER

DIRECTOR OF EQUESTRIAN CHARLES HAIRFIELD

There’s something especially ethereal about the island in May, when the landscapes come alive with color and the vibrance of nature feels even more present. Our equestrian center embraces the extra hours of sunshine offering riders the opportunity to explore blooming paths and serene shoreline in their finest form. Whether you ’ re a seasoned rider or experiencing the equestrian side of Seabrook for the first time, this is a month to embrace the outdoors and appreciate the simple elegance of the ride.

Horse Introduction Experience:

The Equestrian Center is pleased to offer a chance to enjoy an interactive hands-on experience with the horses through our Horse Introduction offering. Horse Introduction is a 60 minute experience where you will meet and spend time with the horses, including grooming along with education on equine body language and herd dynamics.

Pricing for a 60 minute Horse Introduction session is $105 per person ($70 for Members). Please call the Equestrian Center at 843-768-7541 to make a reservation.

HORSE OF THE MONTH

Meet our Horse of the Month: 26-year-old gelding, Frank, owned by Patricia Meyer. Frank’s rare coloring is known as cremello. He has a pure white coat with eyes the shade of a mystical pale blue and pink skin. He is named after Frank Sinatra, “Old Blue Eyes” and not unlike his namesake, he has had a truly extraordinary life.

Born on February 12, 2000, his dam was a beautiful American Quarter Horse and his sire was a majestic Andalusian stallion. Frank inherited his dam’s Quarter Horse conformation. His extremely thick mane and tail with light feathering of his fetlocks comes from his sire’s bloodline. How his iconic personality came to be is a great mystery, but it has led him on many grand adventures throughout his life as a service horse.

Frank is a quick learner. His original owner was a member of the Richland County Sheriff’s Posse. Frank took part in weekly training sessions for the search and rescue group at the farm where he lived. He is very observant and learned from watching everything that the Posse horses did. Frank was quick to be started under saddle and swiftly adapted to the basics of horsemanship, exhibiting fearlessness when faced with the various challenges that mounted service animals are required to adapt to. Frank completed his Posse qualification testing as well as earned SAR Tech certification by age four. The following year he learned how to rope cattle and attended two Buck Brannaman clinics.

Frank is brave. Patricia was able to purchase Frank when he was 6. At the time, the Sherriff’s Posse was gradually transitioning to an accredited Mounted Patrol Unit. This required that the humans be trained and commissioned as Reserve Police Officers and in 2008, Frank attended and graduated from Southern Police Institute’s Mounted Patrol Academy – receiving high honors. As part of the mounted patrol unit, Frank worked at parades, festivals, USC football games and annual holiday events. He also visited local schools on Career Days, teaching children about both the technical skills involved in police work as well as the soft skills required to work efficiently with a partner who happened to be a horse. Frank helped demonstrate the incredible level of teamwork it took to write traffic citations from horseback. He also showcased his bravery – children were asked to wave pool noodles, pop balloons and jump up and down to see if they could scare the police horses. Frank was never scared thanks to many months of training. Today, some of the children that Frank visited at school career days are now grown and working as deputies in local agencies.

Frank loves the stage. As fate would have it, the artistic director for the Columbia City Ballet (now the South Carolina Ballet) happened to see Frank working as a police horse at a local event. He had dreamed for many years of having a live “unicorn” in the CCB annual production of the Nutcracker. He asked if Frank had ever performed on stage – Patricia agreed to give it a try. Frank stepped up to the challenge a few weeks later and gave a flawless performance at his very first rehearsal. He has been a regular performer in the Nutcracker Ballet ever since. Performing in The Nutcracker whet Frank’s appetite for show business. He went on to appear in TV previews for the Sleeping Beauty Ballet and in the CCB’s Studio 54 Ballet production, Frank was cast as Bianca Jagger’s white horse which she famously rode into Studio 54 in NYC on her birthday. Many of the dancers who performed with Frank called him their emotional support horse and often visited him in his dressing room to calm their performance jitters.

Frank is patriotic. He was sworn in as the official mascot for the South Carolina State Guard where he attained the rank of SGT.

Frank loves long walks on the beach. He has participated in several American Heart Association Sponsored Ride-A-Thons in Myrtle Beach to raise money to help cure heart disease.

Frank wants to meet you. He loves people of all ages, especially children. One of his retirement goals at Seabrook is to meet as many Members and make as many human friends as possible.

A TASTE OF MEMORIAL DAY

As Memorial Day approaches, the season of outdoor entertaining officially begins. For the holiday, we ’ re featuring a trio of recipes perfect for the holiday weekend from a bold, flavorful BBQ rub ideal for grilling, to a refreshing Southern crab salad that highlights coastal favorites, and a sweet strawberry buttermilk pie that captures the essence of the Lowcountry strawberry season. Whether you ’ re hosting or bringing a dish to share, these selections are designed to make your Memorial Day table both memorable and distinctly Southern.

BBQ RUB

EXECUTIVE BANQUET CHEF, VAN MIXSON

INGREDIENTS

2 c Paprika

1 c granulated onion and garlic

½ c cumin

2 tbsp black pepper ground

3 c brown sugar

1 c kosher salt

SOUTHERN CRAB SALAD

EXECUTIVE BANQUET CHEF, VAN MIXSON

INGREDIENTS

1 can of claw crabmeat

1 cup of surimi (this is optional makes a sweeter crab salad)

¼ cup of scallions chopped

½ pint of softened cream cheese

½ cup of mayonnaise

1 cup of shredded cheddar

1 tsp of old bay (add more if you want it spicier)

½ lemon zested and juiced

DIRECTIONS

1. Mix everything in a bowl except the crabmeat, mix until everything is incorporated 2.Gently fold in the crabmeat

3.Chill the salad in the fridge for at least 30 minutes and enjoy with crackers or veggies.

STRAWBERRY BUTTERMILK PIE

INGREDIENTS

2 cups fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced

1 cup granulated sugar

¼ cup AP flour

¼ tsp salt

3 large eggs

1 cup buttermilk

1 tsp vanilla extract

¼ tsp nutmeg

2 Tablespoons butter, melted

Unbaked pie crust

DIRECTIONS

1.Combine all dry ingredients in a bowl.

2.Add the eggs, buttermilk, vanilla extract and melted butter.

3.Once well combined, slowly add the sliced strawberries.

4.Pour into pie crust and sprinkle nutmeg on top.

5.Bake at 325 degrees for 45-50 minutes until center is set and crust is golden.

6.Chill and serve.

Note: Goes great with crème fraîche or Chantilly cream. Bonus points for using local strawberries - try checking out Ambrose Family Farm!
