Island Insider

FROM THE HELM

LETTER FROM THE EDITORS

There’s a moment each April in the Lowcountry when everything seems to arrive at once.

The marsh shifts to a lush shade of green, fresh spring pollen blankets the landscape with an unmistakable yellow sheen, the ocean feels just ever-so-slightly warmer, and the evenings stretch long enough to linger outdoors without checking the time. You start to notice the small things again.

This month, we ’ re leaning into that feeling.

In recognition of Earth Month, this edition of The Island Insider is a celebration of the natural beauty that defines life here. Not as something separate from the Club, but as something woven into every experience.

Seabrook Island has a way of reminding us that the best moments are often the simplest ones. A walk on the beach before the day begins. The sound of the wind through the live oaks. The split second you lock eyes with a fawn before they hurry away. A sunset that stops you, just for a second, no matter how many you ’ ve seen before.

As you flip through these pages, we hope you feel a sense of place not just in the images, but in the moments they represent. And more than anything, we hope this issue encourages you to step outside, slow your pace, and experience the island in its fullest form this spring.

With gratitude,

EveBoggs

MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD OF GOVERNORS

As we move into April, there is a renewed sense of energy across Seabrook Island Club that reflects both the excitement of the season and the momentum we are building together as a community.

We are especially pleased to have begun our first month supporting our new General Manager & COO, Brendan P. Clark. Brendan has already immersed himself in the life of the Club spending time across our amenities, meeting Members, and connecting with his team. You’ll have ample opportunity to spend time with Brendan in the future if you haven’t had the chance to meet him yet.

At the same time, our 2026 committees are now fully underway. These groups play an essential role in the success of the Club, bringing forward ideas, perspective, and expertise that help guide our decision-making. We are grateful to the many Members who have volunteered to serve, and we look forward to the meaningful contributions their work will bring in the months ahead.

Looking forward, we are excited to continue strengthening communication and connection across the membership. The Island Insider is only one of several mediums we use to share upcoming events and important news. We will continue to hold our annual Open Member Meetings, the next one scheduled for Thursday, May 28. These meetings are an important forum for sharing updates, providing transparency into Board and Club initiatives, and hearing directly from you. We encourage all Members to attend and be part of the conversation.

We are grateful for your continued involvement and support as we move through this exciting season.

Warm regards,

PRESIDENT

SHAPING YOUR SHOTS

April is here, which means the flowers are blooming, the golf courses are getting a lot of play, and the Master’s Tournament is coming up as well this month! This is the first major golf event of the season, and I know I am probably as excited to watch the best golfers in the world compete at Augusta National as you are.

One thing you will notice when watching The Master’s is that not all the holes are straight away. The greens are not flat either. You will see when watching later this month that the players are playing a draw or fade off the tee to get around trees and trouble. You might also see them playing a cut into a green based on where the flag is one day. They are shaping their shots to maximize the slopes of the course to put the ball in the best possible position to score.

How do we shot shape though? There are a few ways we can do that:

1.If you want to curve the ball to the right, aim the clubface to the left of the target. This is the line you want the ball to start. If curving the ball to the left, aim the clubface to the right of the target.

2.The curve is based on how the clubface compares to the swing path.

3.For a draw, you would aim your body to the right and swing the club around your body on an inside to outside path.

4.For a cut shot, you would aim to the left and swing more upright or outside to inside with your path.

For a right-handed golfer to hit a fade they would aim the clubface to the left of the

HORSE OF THE MONTH

Meet our Horse of the Month: 9-year-old thoroughbred gelding, Houston owned by Katie Lansbury.

Originally bred for the track, Houston joined the Seabrook Island Equestrian Center family in September of 2021. Houston’s sire, Capo Bastone, was a retired American Thoroughbred racehorse best known for winning the 2013 Grade 1 King’s Bishop Stakes at Saratoga where he had an impressive closing run, winning the race in a tight finish with a valiant surge in the final stretch after being second to last the entire race – a feat showing the mark of a horse with immense heart. While his son, Houston never made it to the track himself, Houston did inherit his father’s valiant heart.

Houston spent the first 5 years of his life doing nothing - turned out and forgotten in a field in Aiken, South Carolina. He was never ridden and spent little time around humans. Equestrian Director, Charles Hairfield, discovered Houston in the summer of 2021. Charles saw his potential as a “diamond in the rough,” purchased him and sent him to be started under saddle. During this time, Houston learned how to have a rider and saddle on his back for the first time in his life. The training process took about 2 months. Once his training was completed, Houston came to his new home at Seabrook in September 2021 to begin his new life.

At the time, Katie Lansbury was searching for an equine partner and fell in love with Houston’s kind soul, willing demeanor and valiant heart (three things that simply cannot be trained). She became the 3 rider to ever sit on his back and purchased Houston in November 2021. Their journey began together starting from scratch.

Houston is a natural born athlete and the Hunter Jumper discipline came innately to him. He has a buttery smooth canter and absolutely loves to jump. Over the years he has taught Katie a great deal along the way. She likes to joke that Houston is similar to what she imagines driving a fine European sports car would be like - he is incredibly sensitive and requires delicate, subtle direction. He continues to teach her each and every ride with kind reminders to breathe, relax and enjoy the ride.

Houston has made remarkable progress over the past 4 years and has gone from field horse to show horse - competing and bringing home a Champion Ribbon from Tryon International last fall. He enjoys the thrill and adventure of the show ring. Houston is an amazing partner and a true testament to what is possible when you look beyond a horse’s appearance to see the diamond in the rough and give a forgotten horse a chance to connect, partner together and shine.

BENEFITING MY SISTER’S HOUSE CHARLESTON BENEFITING MY SISTER’S HOUSE CHARLESTON

This March, the Seabrook Island Club community gathered in the Atlantic Ballroom for one of the season ’ s most anticipated and meaningful events: the annual Spring Fashion Show for a Cause. Blending style, community spirit, and purpose, the afternoon was a celebration of generosity in action.

Hosted by WCBD News 2’s Octavia Mitchell and featuring fashions from J. McLaughlin, Holly & Brooks, Lilly Pulitzer, Spartina, and Peyton William Jewelry, the runway came to life with familiar faces—our very own Seabrook Island residents modeling the latest spring styles. Plus, surprise appearances from Aaron and Stratas on the SIC Golf and Racquet Pro teams. Guests enjoyed a thoughtfully curated experience, complete with a plated lunch, porch pop-up shops, and a lively silent auction and prize drawing, all contributing to the day’s success.

Thanks to the incredible support of our Members, sponsors, and volunteers, this year ’ s event raised over $28,000 for My Sister’s House surpassing the $20,000 goal and generating five times more than last year ’ s total. Each ticket, bid, and donation directly supports the organization’s mission to provide shelter, resources, and hope to women and children impacted by domestic violence.

The day was made possible by the generosity and spirit of this community, as well as the dedication of volunteers, models, donors, and partners who brought the event to life. Special thanks to Co-Chairs Carol Sprague and Julie Sellinger for their leadership and vision and their committed volunteer team: Lori Cox, Patty Dabroski, Beth Hamilton, Jeanne Kaufman, Julie Keane, Ruth Pendergrass, and Debbie Vaughn.

More than a fashion show, the event served as a powerful reminder of what can be accomplished when a community comes together with a shared purpose to make a meaningful difference.

1/3 cup mayonnaise

1/2 cup sharp cheddar cheese, finely grated

1/4 cup pimentos, drained and finely chopped

1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

Transfer eggs to an ice bath and cool completely. Peel and slice in half lengthwise. Carefully remove yolks and place them in a mixing bowl. Arrange whites on a serving platter.

Mash yolks until smooth, then mix in mayonnaise, Dijon, vinegar, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.

Fold in shredded cheddar and chopped pimentos until well combined. Adjust seasoning as needed.

Pipe or spoon the filling back into the egg whites. Garnish with a light dusting of smoked paprika and any optional toppings.

CARROT CAKE

INGREDIENTS

Carrot Cake

Red Mill gluten-free)

1 ½ teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon baking soda

½ teaspoon salt

1 ½ teaspoons ground cinnamon

½ teaspoon ground nutmeg

1 ½ cups brown sugar, packed

CHRISTINE

Cream Cheese Frosting

Pinch of salt to balance sweetness

CARROT CAKE EXECUTIVE

DIRECTIONS

1.Preheat oven 350°F.

2.Grease your baking pan(s) 2 - 8 inch pans with butter or non-stick spray, then line with parchment paper.

3.In a large bowl, whisk together 2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder, 1 teaspoon baking soda, ½ teaspoon salt, 1 ½ teaspoons cinnamon, and ½ teaspoon nutmeg until evenly combined.

4.In bowl of stand mixer - beat 1 ½ cups brown sugar with 1 cup (240ml) vegetable oil until smooth. Add 3 room temperature eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.

5.Gently fold in 2 cups grated carrots, ½ cup chopped nuts. Don’t overmix just combine.

6.Slowly add the dry ingredients into the wet mixture, folding gently until just incorporated.

7.Transfer the batter into your prepared pan(s), smoothing the top with a spatula. Bake at 350°F for 40-45 minutes (for 9×13 inch pan) or 30-35 minutes (for two 8-inch pans). Start checking at 30 minutes by inserting a toothpick in the center it should come out clean or with a few moist crumbs.

8.Let the cake cool in the pan for 15 minutes, then transfer to a cooling rack to cool completely before frosting. This prevents the cream cheese frosting from melting. Cooling usually takes about 1 hour.

9.Beat 8 oz softened cream cheese and ½ cup softened unsalted butter together until creamy and smooth. Gradually add 3 cups powdered sugar, beating until fluffy. Mix in 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and a pinch of salt.

10.Frost the cake: Using a spatula, spread the cream cheese frosting evenly over the cooled cake. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes if you want a firmer frosting.

COMMUNITY COMPASS

BUILDING HOPE TOGETHER

SEABROOK ISLAND CLUB SUPPORTS HABITAT FOR HUMANITY WOMEN BUILD

This spring, a group of dedicated women from the Seabrook Island Club team traded their usual routines for hard hats and hammers, coming together in support of the 2026 Sea Island Habitat for Humanity Women Build project. Their efforts helped bring to life something far greater than a structure they helped build a future home for a deserving member of our local community.

The project centered around Ms. Carol, a longtime Johns Island resident whose story is rooted in kindness, resilience, and a deep connection to the Lowcountry. Known for her generous spirit and warm presence, Carol has spent years caring for others both in her community and through her work while quietly working toward a dream of homeownership.

Through Habitat for Humanity’s Homeownership Program, Carol has demonstrated extraordinary dedication, completing over 300 hours of “sweat equity” and actively contributing to the construction of her future home. For her, this house represents more than shelter—it is a place where family can gather, where her signature hospitality can shine, and where generations of loved ones will always feel welcome.

During Women Build Week, the collective impact was remarkable. More than 300 volunteers came together to support the project, contributing hundreds of hours on the jobsite and helping raise over $130,000 fully funding the materials needed to complete the home. The Seabrook Island Club team was proud to be among those lending their time, energy, and heart to this meaningful effort.

For those who participated, the experience was both humbling and inspiring a reminder of the power of community and the difference that can be made when people come together with a shared purpose. As walls were raised and progress took shape, so too did a lasting sense of connection to the mission, to one another, and to Ms. Carol’s journey.

At its core, this project reflects values that resonate deeply within the Seabrook Island Club community: generosity, partnership, and a commitment to lifting others. We are honored to have played a small part in helping Ms. Carol build not just a house, but a home—and we look forward to seeing the lasting impact of this work for years to come.
