SHARING IMPORTANT INFORMATION WITH THE HOA
FROM THE HG COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE
The following are three types of information that residents should share with the HOA:
1. Emergency Contact Information
It is very important for everyone in Herons Glen to submit the name and contact information of a friend or relative who can be contacted about you in the case of an emergency. This is something most of us don’t think about, but if something should happen to you, the sheriff’s office will be in touch with
the HOA to request this information. The information will only be used if requested by emergency responders or in the event there is an emergency at your home.
Here is the link to the HOA Form for submitting your emergency contact information:
If you are leaving for the summer or will be away for an extended period of time, it is helpful if both the HOA and the HGRD are notified of your plans so they have an updated mailing address for any official mail that may be sent to you.
Here is the link to the HOA Form that will be shared with the HGRD:
When you return to Herons Glen, you must complete the form again so the HOA and HGRD will know that your local mailing address is re-instated.
3. Home Watch Authorization
In addition, while you are away, if you have authorized someone to watch your house in your absence, this information should be shared with the HOA. Your home watcher can then authorize access to someone from outside Herons Glen as needed in the care of your property (for example, if you need your air conditioner serviced while you are out of the Glen).
The following is a listing of HOA and HGRD meetings known at the time of publication.

100 YEARS OF HONOR: MANKATO, MINN., NAVY VETERAN CELEBRATES MILESTONE!
PEGGY LINDQUIST,
HERONS GLEN PAT OTTE, HERONS GLEN
From humble beginnings in Mankato, Minn., to a distinguished career in the United States Navy and decades of family life throughout the United States, Bill McGrath’s life has been defined by determination, allegiance and love for family and country.
Who is Bill McGrath? He is the father of resident Patricia Otte who recently celebrated his 100th birthday. Born and raised in Mankato, Minn., Bill faced hardship early. When he was just 9 years old, his father died of cancer, leaving his mother to raise the family alone. Determined to help make ends meet, Bill went to work at a young age. He delivered newspapers, sold magazines door-to-door and eventually built such a successful route that he hired another boy to handle deliveries, paying him less than he earned and keeping the profit. His entrepreneurial instincts, smarts and skills were apparent.
As a teenager, Bill worked at a local soda shop, where the owner allowed him to eat as much as he wanted. Family members recall Bill
laughing as he told the story of being fired. Why? He ate too much on the job! He also worked in a machine shop and developed a love for tool and die work. In later years, he would say that if he hadn’t chosen the Navy, he might have happily spent his career in that trade.
Then at just 17, Bill enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He later attended Marquette University in Milwaukee through the ROTC program, continuing his path of service. His Navy career would take him across the country while making lasting memories such as seeing President Harry Truman while he was stationed in Key West. In San Diego, he became the first sonar technician to identify a Russian submarine off the coast, an achievement for which he received formal recognition. He even trained Navy “frogmen,” later known as Navy SEALs, instructing them on how to escape submerged submarines through underwater hatches.
he met Jinny, who was serving mashed potatoes to servicemen near campus. Their meeting led to a marriage that would last 50 years and bring six children into the world.
After Jinny’s passing, Bill found love again with Dee. They were married for 21 years until her death a year and a half ago, adding another chapter of companionship and partnership to his life.
Amid his military career, Bill’s personal life blossomed. While attending Marquette,
For the past 35 years, Bill made his home in Naples, Fla. Due to fragility and memory challenges, his family made the decision a year ago to move him to Hampton Manor in Punta Gorda, where he could receive more attentive care. Though his strength has
gradually declined, he has continued to do well, supported by family and caregivers.
From delivering newspapers in small-town Minnesota to identifying submarines during the Cold War, from raising six children to building two long-lasting loving marriages, Bill’s life reflects a generation shaped by sacrifice, opportunity and commitment.
Herons Glen is grateful Patricia Otte shared her father’s 100th birthday with us. She announced in our local Google Group Bill’s 100th birthday and asked for neighbors to drive by, wave or honk. She was pleasantly overwhelmed by how our community embraced him with gifts, hugs and kisses. Herons Glen VOG recognized Bill for his military service. And we all know his service toward achieving peace is a gift to us which we embrace and uphold.
Happy 100th Birthday, Bill! We love you!
NEED TRANSPORTATION?

COMMUNITY RALLIES FOR HERONS GLEN
BUTTERFLY GARDEN FUNDRAISER
PEGGY LINDQUIST, HERONS GLEN
KIM BASILE, BARB CALLAHAN AND PEGGY
LINDQUIST, HERONS GLEN
Creativity and community spirit were in full bloom
Tuesday afternoon, February 17, as 25 residents gathered to support the Herons Glen Butterfly Garden during a hands-on fundraising Sea Glass Workshop.
The event was spearheaded by Barb Callahan, Janice Esdale and Kim Basile, whose combined efforts brought together garden supporters and craft
enthusiasts alike. Resident artist Janice Esdale led the workshop, guiding participants through a creative project, while Annette Slocum assisted attendees with selecting and arranging glass stones, measuring picture frames and matting their designs.
The Butterfly Garden has a history of grassroots fundraising, with past efforts including popular plant and bake sales. Unlike other amenities within our community, the garden is not funded by the Herons Glen Recreation District (HGRD). Instead, it operates as a self-supporting initiative, budgeting carefully to cover expenses such as mulch, new and replacement shrubs, and hiring an outside lawn service to trim trees, shrubs and landscape beds.
Routine weeding and general upkeep are handled by dedicated volunteer members of the Butterfly Garden, whose ongoing efforts keep the space vibrant and welcoming.
Located on the north side of Herons Glen Boulevard, just west of the Fitness Center, the Butterfly Garden offers more than colorful foliage and butterflies. Visitors may spot blue herons nesting above the sanctuary, a whimsical rock snake named “Rocko” winding through the shrubbery, and even the occasional bobcat passing through the peaceful setting.
Community members interested in becoming part of the Butterfly Garden, contributing to its beautification, or sharing ideas for future fundraisers are encouraged to contact Kim Basile at (443) 253-5062.
Through events like Tuesday’s workshop, the Butterfly Garden continues to thrive sustained by volunteers, supported by neighbors, and rooted in community pride.

MICHAEL FELL, DENISE FELL, AND GREG YOPP, HERONS GLEN
This year the Herons Glen HOA Activities Committee continued its tradition of hosting a community shredding day, held on February 16, 2026, giving residents an easy and secure choice for clearing out old files, statements, and personal records. The mobile shredding truck was kept busy throughout the event as neighbors arrived with cartons and bags of paperwork ready for safe disposal.
Representatives from Salterra, a local senior living and rehabilitation facility, were also on site during the
event, offering complimentary coffee and pastries while sharing information about their services.
By the end of the event, more than 4,000 pounds of documents had been securely destroyed. Events like this play an important role in protecting residents from identity theft and fraud. Financial statements, medical records, and outdated tax documents can contain personal details that criminals actively seek. Professional on-site shredding ensures information is destroyed immediately and cannot be reconstructed.
In addition to safeguarding personal information, shredding also supports environmental responsibility, as the paper is recycled after destruction. The strong turnout once again demonstrated the community’s awareness of both privacy protection and sustainability, as well as the value of coming together for practical neighborhood services. The Activities
Committee would also like to extend a sincere thank-you to the residents and to Salterra for their generous donations, which helped offset the cost of the shredding truck and made this event possible for the community.
GROUNDS CORNER
HELP FOR YARDS
COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE, HERONS GLEN
Twice a year the Grounds Committee selects and recognizes a neighborhood property for outstanding compliance and design. Photos and description of the most recent recognition can be viewed in the January edition of the Heron magazine. The Grounds Committee can be an invaluable resource to residents for maintenance and improvements which could lead to your property being recognized as well.
There are several ways that Grounds volunteers may be able to help you. One helpful tool the Grounds Committee offers is a list of Florida Friendly plants that will thrive in your yard with proper care. You can access this on the Web at Herons Glen HOA , under HGHOA/Resident Area/Policies & Guides/ Ground Standards/Recommended Trees & Shrubs. When choosing plants for your property, consult the list and you will most likely have fewer problems in having and keeping a beautiful landscape. Another way a committee member might be able to help, is by going over what is required in different areas of your property, such as areas around light posts or partially empty beds. A Grounds Committee member may be able to go over any standards that are not clear to you. While Grounds Committee members cannot recommend landscapers, a neighbor might help in choosing someone to either aid in choosing plants or someone to maintain your landscape.
Maybe you are looking for low maintenance options for your yard? Plants do grow very fast here in
southwest Florida. If you are a recent arrival to the Glen, plants from ‘up north’ may not work with our soil and rainy conditions. Are you considering rocks instead of mulch? Then you may want to discuss the options available with a committee member.
When visitors or potential home buyers drive through the Glen they are impressed by how well our community looks. The Grounds Committee folks who check on the status of our yards are volunteers and neighbors , just trying to help keep our community looking great.
Stay tuned for coming articles that will highlight some of the most common yard challenges faced by residents and ways to address any concerns. You may want to attend a Grounds Committee meeting which happens on the second Thursday of every month in the HOA Conference room at 1 p.m. Everyone is welcome.
Take advantage of the friendly help that committee members can give and you too may have a yard that is worthy of the recognition given by the Grounds Committee.
Did You Know-
The Herons Glen HOA Grounds Committee reviews and approves resident applications for landscaping and other related projects. The committee assists residents with their landscape project questions, promotes education of the Community Wide Landscape Standards and policies. The Grounds Committee is also charged with monitoring for non-compliances. The mission of the Grounds Committee is to encourage and educate residents to keep the Herons Glen community beautiful.
Considering a landscape project
Before starting your project, review the available information posted on the Herons Glen website at https://www.heronsglenhoa.org click on the tab “Resident Area” then scroll down to click on Policies and Guidelines then scroll to Grounds Standards or you can use a different access point through direct page links:
Prefer the paper version, no worries, just stop by the HOA Ofice. You can also send an email to hoaofice@heronsglenhoa.com and request a pdf version by email.
Choose a landscape company that has a Lee County Business Tax License, General Liability and Workers Comp or Workers Comp Exemption. Your request will not be reviewed until the items are provided. Herons Glen does not have a list of approved contractors.
The Grounds Committee meets the second Thursday of the month (no meeting in August) at 1:00 pm in the HOA Conference Room.
Grounds Requests and the required documentation must be submitted by Thursday prior to the scheduled meeting. Work cannot be started until the request is reviewed and approved by the Grounds Committee. The requests are approved at the Grounds Committee meeting by vote of committee members.
The Grounds Committee meetings are open to all residents. Attending is a great way to get more information or guidance on a landscaping project.

LET’S GO TO TARPON SPRINGS!!!
DUANE PARKINSON – TRAVEL CLUB, HERONS GLEN
Tarpon Springs is a very interesting community just north of Tampa and the drive is a tad over two hours from the Glen. There are countless small towns along our Florida Gulf Coast, each with its own distinctive character. Tarpon Springs has the highest concentration of Greek Americans per capita in the entire U.S. Greek immigrants began arriving in the early 1900s to harvest natural sponges in the warm Gulf waters. These immigrants wrote their relatives and friends back in Greece to come over and help work a market that they knew well – Greece is composed of over 6,000 islands, and the country’s economy is centered around the Aegean Sea. So those immigrating Greeks were very familiar with sponge diving.
One of the Greek island groups is known as the Dodecanese chain, where many immigrating families originated. This group of islands shares strong ties with Tarpon Springs—even the main street along the waterfront is called Dodecanese Boulevard.
Walk down Dodecanese Boulevard and the influence is unmistakable. Authentic Greek bakeries sell fresh loukoumades (Greek honey puff dessert pastries) and
baklava (that delicious honey, walnut and phyllo dough sweet dessert). Family-owned tavernas serve slow-roasted lamb and spanakopita (a classic Greek savory pastry filled with spinach, feta cheese, eggs, onion, garlic and dill, which is baked in flaky phyllo dough).
In addition to the authentic Greek bakeries, tavernas, and restaurants, you will find the stunning Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral, which is a replica of the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, Turkey (about 40 HG Travel Clubbers saw the Hagia Sophia on our Mediterranean Cruise last September). This cathedral is a tribute to their Byzantine heritage. The Byzantine Empire was the Greek speaking, Christian Eastern half of the Roman Empire from 2,000 years ago. The Hagia Sophia in Istanbul is a mosque now.
The sponge industry is Tarpon Springs’ big draw. In the early twentieth century, Tarpon Springs was the sponge capital of the world, producing more natural sponges than anywhere else on the planet. Greek divers harvest natural sea sponges from the Gulf floor by hand, using hard hat diving equipment. This is difficult and dangerous work. The sponge industry waned after a blight in the 1940s, but it never entirely disappeared. Today, the docks remain a working waterfront where sponge boats still go out, and shops still sell genuine natural Gulf sponges alongside souvenir trinkets and fresh seafood.
Tarpon Springs is real. Florida has experienced a lot of overdevelopment and commercial areas. Many distinctive coastal towns have lost their charm as a result of strip malls and housing developments. But in Tarpon Springs, many third-generation Greek families still run the same restaurants that their grandparents opened. Tarpon Springs is the genuine article.
Our Travel Club is planning an overnight trip to Tarpon Springs and the world-famous Mote Aquarium in Sarasota in May or June. Come and join us on this exciting trip!!

SOCIALITES SEE RED IN FEBRUARY
PAM SCHEID, HERONS GLEN
GREG YOPP, HERONS GLEN
The color red is commonly associated with Valentine’s Day in February. More recently, red has become a symbol for Women’s Heart Health, which was the subject for the Socialites’ February program.
Many of the members were dressed in red to welcome the guest speaker Dr. Joan Rock, a cardiologist with Lee Health, who addressed the issue of heart disease as it affects women. Dr. Rock explained that even though the percentage of death from heart disease is the same for women as men, early studies focused on men. Women’s heart problems were sometimes missed or misdiagnosed because their symptoms did not always match men’s. Dr. Rock said one of the differences is that while men’s hearts are stronger on the pumping cycle, for women it is the relaxing cycle, which is harder to detect. She also said that Lee Health is working toward acquiring more advanced diagnostic equipment and establishing a Women’s Heart Institute.
Dr. Rock listed the high-risk factors that contribute to heart disease: smoking, obesity, hypertension, and diabetes. She added family history as a contributor. Dr. Rock emphasized the importance for women to monitor their blood pressure, A1C numbers, cholesterol levels, and to be sure primary care physicians include heart health among their concerns. She also said healthy diets and exercise are important to maintain heart health.
The meeting closed following a brief business meeting. President Donna Moffatt complimented Sue McCoy for the Valentine themed table decorations, and Rhonda Parkinson announced the March program will be the fashion show by Anthony’s. Kathleen Colletti reminded members of the 72-hour luncheon cancellation policy, Cheryl Dawes introduced new members, and Bev Groft reported this month’s member contribution to the All Souls outreach program totaled $435.
The next Socialites luncheon has been rescheduled for March 24.

MANY BENEFITS AVAILABLE FOR VETERANS
PAM SCHEID, HERONS GLEN
Lee County Veterans Services representative Ron Belcher was the guest speaker at the Veterans of the Glen February meeting. Belcher, a former Marine, has devoted his civilian life to encouraging veterans to apply for all the government benefits they qualify for. His primary focus is on the Viet Nam veterans.
Belcher said the need to reach out to and to inform Viet Nam veterans is greater because these former service men and women have characteristically been reluctant to apply. He explained that because of the ill treatment and overall disdain Viet Nam vets faced when they returned, many preferred to keep a low profile and did not pursue the benefits.
Belcher urged VOG members to apply for disability ratings and to apply for as many benefits they qualify for. He said the information they need is in va.gov. He distributed forms to be used as a first step in the application process and empathized the importance of including all servicerelated ailments and the “aggravated by…” ones as well.
Belcher suggested the VOG was an ideal organization for members to help each other learn about and apply for veterans’
benefits. He also holds classes on applying for military benefits at Good Shepherd Methodist Church and All Souls Episcopal Church.
After discussing plans for the November 11, 2026, Veterans Day Dinner Dance and the season-closing picnic in April, Vice President John Bierle introduced Dale Spain from Hearts and Homes. VOG Treasurer Randy Swanson presented him with a check to Hearts and Homes, an organization serving veterans the VOG is proud to support.
