Out of Africa

HPPA News

By Jane Breisch, Editor My husband, Bob, and I joined 18 other HP members, who, along with Bob Kelly, Director of Golf, and Larry German, Food & Beverage Director, experienced an unforgettable trip to South Africa in May. It was a tour conducted by Pro Golf Africa Safaris (https://www. progolfsafaris.com/). The accommodations and staff at all the locales we visited were over the top, as were the beautiful scenery and weather.

By Joy Weiner, jcweiner3@hotmail.com The Minot US OPEN Pickleball Championship was held in Naples April 13-20. It’s been described as “the most prestigious tournament in the sport and the biggest Pickleball Party in the world.” Pickleball Magazine describes it as the “Tourney of the People.” According to the Minot website, people came to the OPEN this year from all 50 states, American Samoa, and from 31 countries around the world. They ranged in age from 8 to 88. Over 3,250 players competed and 50,000+ people watched. Proudly, two of our own HP residents contended this year: Ted Boynton and Kitsy Baumgartner. Ted competed with his partner, Dave Atkinson from Pelican Preserve, and they took the GOLD at skill level 3.5, ages 75-79 competing against 12 other teams from the U.S. and Canada. Ted has always played tennis and still plays for one of the HP tennis teams. However, five years ago decided to focus on Pickleball and shared that he enjoys it immensely. When asked what he likes most he said, “the competition and social aspect, as well as, unlike tennis, you don’t have to donate two hours playing with the same folks but can drop in and play with different people for as long or as little as you like.”
