12th Annual Live Like Jake 5K Raises Over $135,000 During Annual Race Kicking Off National Water Safety Month Over 1,400 runners and walkers joined the race to prevent childhood drowning during the 12th Annual Live Like Jake 5K on April 25. The annual fundraiser, created in the memory of Jake Roarke Morrison, raised a record $135,000-plus which will be used to provide scholarships for self-rescue swim lessons and critical care needs for families affected by drownings, as well as to continue Live Like Jake’s mission of spreading awareness about drowning prevention. The day’s festivities took place in downtown Abacoa. “We are so grateful for the hundreds of supporters who turned out today,” said Live Like Jake Co-Founder, Keri Morrison. “Since losing our son Jake, it has been our goal that not one more family has to go through the devastation caused by drowning. We have been able to save thousands of lives these past twelve years, and we will keep going with our mission to prevent the No. 1 cause of death in young children thanks to everyone’s continuous generosity and support.”
The event included pre-race warm up provided by Burn Boot Camp, coffee donated from Crux, energy-packed snacks from Trader Joe’s and Bolay, the national anthem sung by Charlotte Johnson and opening welcome from Live Like Jake founders Keri and Roarke Morrison before the 7:30 a.m. runners’ start. Following the race, participants refreshed with hydration stations, played in the Kids Zone, cheered on the 5 and under runners of the Kids Dash and enjoyed music and video interactions provided by Digital Vibez. Emceed by Jay
Zeager, the awards ceremony began with Morrisons’ reading of the names of children who lost their lives from drowning followed by special medal presentations to race category winners and a raffle prize drawing of a donated bicycle from J-Town Bikes. 12th Annual Live Like Jake 5K on page 4
